At the beginning, the subversion of expectation is just great. The way he starts with a pun on the film Educating Rita and then the cryptic title "Hanging Bacon" and then the second one is just Hairy Chinese Kid!!! 😆😆😆

Tomatoes were considered poisonous when pewter plates were used. Pewter plates were made with high lead content, tomatoes have citric acid, citric acid reacts with lead to form water soluble lead citrate, a highly toxic lead salt is now in the tomato juice.

@@DrunkTalkin and then in the next link when Ricky’s proven wrong he’ll find some technicality and weasel out of apologising. Moments like that make you realise how he played David Brent so well. But they’re all mates and I’m sure they play it up for the radio so whatever

@@Jonpoo1 the one that got me was when karl was talking about the brain. the wording he used was funny but the question he posed was a very legitimate one about the power of the conscious mind vs the subconscious

The tomato and lead plates story seems very credible
Even now, if you purchase a can of "tinned tomatoes", when you open then, you will notice that the "tin can" is LINED with a special plastic coating to prevent the acidity of the tomatoes from reacting with the metal of the can.
Similar reason, you should not store vinegar in aluminium or copper containers,
as the oxides will react to form acetates. Even stainless steel will eventually react in vinegar.
Cooking with vinegar can be hazardous too if you add the vinegar FIRST to a hot pan as the heat evaporates off excess water and you start to get close to something called glacial acetic acid which is extremely corrosive.
Regular vinegar is around 3% - 4% acetic acid. Once you even reach 10%, it becomes caustic enough to harm the mouth, vinegar chucked into a hot pan can give VERY high strength acetic acid. The fumes from this will also be something you never wish to inhale twice.

By his usual low standards, Karl's not far off the mark with 'cold shoulder'. This idiom originated in the early 1800s. It is said that welcome visitors to a house were served a hot meal, but someone who was not welcome was given a cold shoulder of whatever meat was being eaten.

To burn the candle at both ends means to exhaust oneself by working too much, going to bed late and getting up early. When you burn the candle at both ends, you're living at a frenetic pace. The term burn the candle at both ends is derived from the French phrase Brusler la chandelle par les deux bouts. Coined around the beginning of the seventeenth century, the early meaning of burn the candle at both ends was to be a spendthrift, to be wasteful. Candles were expensive, and burning both ends of a candle used it up much faster. Eventually the candle in question came to symbolize one’s life force, and burning the candle at both ends meant to use of one’s life force too quickly, to exhaust oneself by working too much.
