planting orla this year
What size is the bucket, please? 30L or 50L?
I followed your advice in 2020 ,and planted 6 buckets of earlies and 14 buckets of maincrop, we have been delighted by how easy it has been and we still have one bucket to harvest . I have just planted my earlies in 4 buckets , its a great method, and for me in my seventies by far the easiest ! Thank for your great videos.
First year for me in grow bags, I'm planting red Orland and Yukon gold, thanks for your knowlege!
Hi Tony, I am 59 years of age and I just watched this video and its inspired me to start using containers to grow potatoes.
Thank You.
ATB Reeco
Thats amazing I am so happy that your going to grow them :)
@@simplifygardening Thank You.
ATB Reeco
Me too!
Yukon gold is our favorite. I plan on trying a couple buckets this year.
I've bought charlottes and maris peer this year to go in 10 gallon bags, so this video is very helpful!
This is the third year I am growing potatoes in 30L buckets after seeing your video. Excellent results year in year out. More and more are turning to growing in buckets. Thank you.
I'm going to try this many thanks for sharing your gardening knowledge 🙂
Some great tips there, thank you...exactly what I was looking for. A friend of mine has given me some King Edwards seed spuds and they're just about ready for planting out, I'll be getting busy this weekend!
Perfect Timing Nick
I have just signed up for my first allotment so I’m researching one veg at a time atm as much as I can so I feel more confident when I finally get a plot. Your videos are the best I’ve come across! I’m currently watching all your potato vids and writing down all your tips, timelines, video names so I can rewatch at the specific time. For a newbie I have found it overwhelming but after watching your videos I find it easier to take in! the way you explain it is fantastic! Thank you so much!
Hi Emma. Thank you so much for such a kind comment. I am very glad you are getting value from my videos. Keep digging through them and if you find something you need help with just email me at tony@simplifygardening.com and I will do my best to answer your question. Oh and welcome to the channel
I've been growing in buckets for 2 seasons now and you are growing the way i do thank you so much for your posts . I'm ordering more buckets today too
hi. what size buckets would you recommend please?
Love this video, going to try this growing style this year. Wasn’t able to get hold of Charlottes this year so I’ve gone with Rocket 🤞
Great video. I’ve just planted 8 pots can’t wait to see results. Thank you for for your advice.
Wonderful!
International kidney is my spud of choice this year and I’ll definitely be using buckets after watching videos about that. That fact at the end was interesting about storing them in situ, that sounds perfect! I’ve got a few Desiree chitting and some enya ... and I’m trying a few ratte too! Maybe a bit ambitious but I’m going to try many new things this year.love your channel!
Thanks for such a great comment. I am always glad to hear others are enjoying the channel, means I must be doing something right. Always stretch yourself its how we learn, what maybe working great for some, with our climates might not work for others. Don't be afraid for it to not work. you never fail, you just find ways that dont work. and let me tell you. I know plenty of ways that dont work :)
I have bought buckets from Oakland ...as you suggested... great price. I am growing Charlottes and Sarpo Mira. They are chitting at the moment. Thank you very much for your videos, they are so well done, really helpful.
Many thanks for such an informative video in language we can all understand. Brilliant presentation. Have already subscribed.
Hi Wayne, Thanks for your comment and welcome to the channel my friend. Great to have you here. I have a huge playlist all about growing potatoes that might interest you. Look forward to chatting more with you. Tony
what a brilliant way of growing new spuds very informative, mick [hubby] will try on his allotment this year, cheers mary
Let me know how you get on Mary
hello tony i am growing winston,s in the same containers you are using .great tip 2 at the bottom another 2 staggered half way up .
Good day to you Tony !! 👍👍😁😁 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, knowledge and experiences on how you grow your first early potatoes for the best harvest with us all today 😁😁👍👍
Hey your welcome, Thanks for commenting. What varieties are you growing this year?
I am growing Jazzy and Sarpo Mira mainly this year. I have three seed potatoes each of Charlotte, Maris Piper and Vivaldi to try too. I grow all my potatoes in the same tubs as you. I only have a garden with raised beds, no greenhouse. Can't wait to start planting again. After getting rid of the last lot of snow, today we have some snow again in Middlesbrough, and it is bitter cold. Love your video's, thank you for all the time and effort you put into them, very much appreciated by all.
Hi Christine, Yeah its been snowing hard here too. I really am glad you took the time to comment, it means the world to me when people interact and realise it takes time to make these videos. Thanks
Great trips, very informative, will try to follow your video see how it goes👍👍
I've just collected Charlotte and Sarp o potatoes from my allotment shop and will just be growing those two varieties this year using your bucket method. Last year I grew potatoes in the ground and had a lot of potatoes with wire worms and some slug damage so I'm hoping for a cleaner crop this year by growing in containers. I will let you know how I get on. Really enjoy your videos, very informative
Brilliant video, all the information is so accessible. Move over Monty Don! Thanks
I’m growing Charlottes and have two 8’ rows in a raised bed, but after watching this I’ll also put some in a couple of builders tubs.
Its such a great way to grow them, let me know how you get on
Sarpo Mira definitely it was awesome last year just like your bucket I was amazed never grown then before also Pentland Javelin and kestrel. Love the vids keep em coming 🍻
Plenty more coming Jacko
Well presented. Trying this on a larger scale this year to give my plot beds a break from spuds, start earlier in the poly tunnel and to see if can help in controlling blight.
David Check out the new video from yesterday and the one linked in the comments of that video It will nail the blight issue and give you a load more tips.
Hi Tony, bought 20, thirty litre buckets and 4 , thirty five litre. Growing 13 varieties of earlies and main. A great hobby, rocket and swift sown 4th feb. Thanks for your advice. Looking forward to harvesting some tasty spuds!
Hello Tony, I have Pentland Javelin first earlies, my saved seed Marfona and the potatoes sown from seed from a parents of Sarpo Mira, hoping they will carry the blight resistance jean. Not forgetting two unknown varieties that I found on #StartingANewAllotment. Thankyou for taking the time to make these videos.
🌱Happy Gardening my friend, Terry.
Thats a great list Terry. Anyway to find out what those varieties are? Be worth looking to find out and produce your seed if they are rare
Thanks for your video Tony, very informative. I've decided to try growling my potatoes in buckets this year. This will be my third year in my allotment and whilst I've had reasonable crops from my potatoes they have suffered from slugs and wire worms. I'm hoping to avoid that problem this year. I'm just growing two varieties this year, Charlotte and Sarpo. Would you tell me what mulch you use on top of your buckets and where you can get it from. Thanks Tony
Hi pleased to you. I have just found you and have now ordered three ten gal buckets, bought Rocket x 4 Charlotte x4 and Maris Piper x 2 seed potatoes plus a bag of Vegetable compost . This is my first real venture into vegetable gardening so I will be soaking up your vlogs here and Facebook.
Sounds great!
this is my first year trying to grow potatoes in pots/tubs - Maris Piper is one of the spud varieties
After King Edwards they are my favourite, Cannot stand Waxy Potatoes.
Hi Tony, delighted I’m watching this, starting mine tomorrow 🙌 in the garden. I planted them in the ground up at the allotment a few days ago. I did grow in coffee sacks out in the garden two years ago but did the heeling up. Going to do this method now 💚 Geri
Geri this is a great way to save time and is perfect for griwing
UK Here We Grow will post the photos in the group when I’m done 💚
Great video I’ve been growing in polybags exactly the same
That's great
Thank you. I’ve never grown potatoes before so I’m going to give this a go.
So nice of you
I'm going to give this a go, just off to look at Oakland containers now
Many thanks :0)
Thats great heather. remember the price drops considerably the more you buy so put in what you want to see the price you pay
Thank you for these videos on container gardening. I am approaching retirement age and can no longer garden in ground. My favourite potatoes variety is called Yukon Gold. They are a yellow potato and have a slight buttery flavor.
Yes I grew a few pots of them last year
Thanks for sharing Tony, for my first growing season I've planted in Oakland tubs Pentland Javelin, I have also planted King Edwards in some other tubs and the old recycling tubs.
That is excellent Ronald. great to see your using the tubs, just keep them moist and get ready for some fantastic potatoes. I look forward to you letting me know your results :)
I shall be doing a reveal on my channel as and when I feel they will be ready to harvest fingers crossed.
Will look forward to watching it Ronald :)
Very useful video - thank you! First time growing potatoes so using containers. First batch of seed potatoes have arrived and are being chitted. Variety is Home Guard.
Glad it was helpful Alun i will have loads coming stay tuned
You are right about people saying it is expensive, Plate keeps saying it to me.
But like you we recycle it and use it for many years either in beds or barrels.
Well as long as you see it as an investment in future crops the cost isnt that important. Yes growing food can save you money, But I for one dont do it to save money. I do it for the health of my family to have the best grown food they can get and throughout the year if I total up what I spend over what we get out of it I still save a fortune. and I have enriched my soil the next year for the next batch of crops MMMMMMMMMMM.
love the videos as a new guy to this loads of advice on your videos.
Have heard people growing spuds on hay/Straw have you done it.
I did it a few years ago Paul and will be doing it again next year to record it as a test, but this year I am testing growing mediums for spuds
A bit late, as I was late ordering my seed spuds. My buckets arrived, Oaklands are so professional, had delivery updates. The buckets arrived safely and the delivery drivers they use is excellent 👍🏻 and are now spuds are all in. Luckily I had popped a couple of rows in my no digs beds as I had a feeling I’d be a bit later this year with my lates😂. They are peeking through, so I’ll feed back on the bucket planted against the raised beds ones. Thanks 🙏 so much for your inspiration and tips.
Where is Oaklands based I live in the North East love your videos
I will take your advice on planting my potatoes!no more earthling up!! Thanks!!
Margaret check out tonights video on looking after your seed potatoes before you plant them. It maybe of interest to you
This is great info for me, thanks! 👍🌱🌱🌱🌱
First-year growing in pots, got some Blue Salad Potatoes - a beautiful blue all the way through!!
That's what I like to hear, someone untied from convention.
I go the coloured toms, beetroot and carrot route myself and get a kick out of seeing the surprised expression on folks' faces, when they see the results. 😂
I'm growing store bought red and Yukon gold potatoes. I get organic ones that are already sprouting. This is my first year keeping a proper garden journal rather than just notes scribbled on paper. I'll be able to get a better idea of how long they take to grow here when planted earlier or later.
Just about to start my earlies and I’m growing in buckets for the first time. I’ve always earthed up when growing in potato bags so I’ve learnt something. I shall try filling the buckets instead of topping up. Thank you, this was really useful.
Il try this method this year
Sounds great!
I’m growing home guard in buckets for the first time - this is fantastic
Same here Angus 1st time growing in buckets
You won't regret it, guys.
Buckets give consistently high yeilds and, should foul or freezing weather threaten, can be transported to more sheltered areas.
I look forward to updates of success from you both. 👍😀
Thank you for your quick reply. I am growing irish coblers and red norlands.
Thats great Abbey. Not seen the red Norlands before
Red Norlands are great. Obiously red, midsized, good producer. White flesh. Very Nice. My 2nd yr. growing them.
@@abbeyk4504 I will have to see if I can get some seed for next year and try them out. Thanks
Thanks for the videos Tony, they’re my No 1 reference guide!
Just planted my spuds in 30L buckets: earlies Swift, Sharps Express, 2nd earlies Charlotte, Sarpo Axona, mains Blue Danube and Sarpo Mira. The last 3 types are all from Sarpo and blight resistant hauls and tubers. I’ll let you know what the results are.
Cheers Peter glad your enjoying them
My personal favourite spud is Stemster, good video, I'm building my polygrub tunnel this year, so will definitely be planting container spuds, this time next year.
Awesome David will def help
Thanks man, i've ordered those 3 fertilizers. Going to try growing first earlys for the first time... wish me luck.
Best of luck!
I am growing Casablanca .these have been HIGHLY recommended .

Absolutely love your vids. Just planting 2nd earlies now - Maris peer from Wilko!! Wish me luck!!

Thank you very much for the great info
Thank you Tony, I know we have grown potatoes in raised beds for many years but we are going to do it this way next time.
Judith, thats great. have you seen my new video that came out today? Its all about potatoes
Yes I have Tony, great idea putting all the different ways into one video, I am looking forward to all the others you will do. Thank you.@@simplifygardening
Great video mate 👍Helped me a lot thx👍
Glad it was of help Andy :)
I never knew that you could plant potatoes that deep in a pot & cover the rest of the pot in soil..Thankyou!! cheers from Australia. 😊I have had much more of a harvest growing in pots or container bags..
So much easier and less chance to damage the plants. sow them then forget until they are through
I ❤ this channel. Currently growing in 5 Gal buckets indoors and grow bags but I’d much prefer those nice Oakland Buckets! Growing outside too in trenches (mid JAN 2023) Red and Golds not sure of the proper names because they’re store potatoes which chitted.
Hi from South Africa! I will be growing Alverstone russet and Up-To-Date potatoes for the first time but in bags. Thank you for all the info!
Awesome, check out todays video on potatoes
THANKS for the tips about planting potatoes in the cointainer..Am living in Malaysia..we only get potatoes in the mart. I love potatoes..and try to plant it as shown..Hoping for the best. thanks again

Have Kennebecs growing now, with plans to grow some Red Pontiacs and Yukon Golds for my late season potatoes. Growing these in containers in Fortuna California.
I have been using buckets for a number of years due to it being easier for me. I grow Irish potatoes red La soda, Norland or red Pontiac. These are recommended for my area. Works well for me.
I am new to this Tony I am planting zorba as my early and king Edward as main crop, in buckets as you have described. so wish me luck, I grew runner beans in containers last year first time and they cropped great so same again this year. i am going to try parsnips and carrots as well. all in containers.
You can do it!
Hi Tony.
This message is probably a bit longer after you posted this video, I've followed your videos for quite some time. Back when you where 'UK HERE WE GROW' , (are you still a fireman) I just wanted to say that I have learnt a lot from this video. My potato growing has been mainly 1st & 2nd earlies. Boy have I been doing it wrong.
Sorry for woffleing on a bit, it's just that I don't have any body to talk gardening with.
Kindest regards Geoff Maddison
Great videos. His guy knows his stuff 🙏🏽🌱💚🌱🙏🏽
Thank you Suzanne
In the area i live the local tip sells compost for £2 a bag, its certified for use in organic gardening, 40 litres peat free. Its dark black, it does have a lot of uncomposted wood bits in it but my plants love it, thought it might be worth mentioning :) x
Yes we have similar here but I find there is a lot of plastic in it here
Very impressed with the information and especially the Excel spreadsheet planner, how can I get hold of a copy Paul
Well Tony, you got me worried for a bit. I thought you were giving up putting stuff on you tube. Your channel was the first one I found when I got my allotment. I am so lucky. I live is a small village and after four years of asking the Farmer, who owes the land around my apartment. for a small bit of land.
Right out of the blue I ask him and we meet in the Pub and we agreed how much he would allow me to use. The Farmer and his family have been such a support, as have the neighbours and people in the village. I won't mention his name, but without him I simply could not have started. So Many thanks to the Main Farmer in Tibberton Worcester. Many Many thanks. mate there will always be a pint in the pub when I see you. Cheers mate
Thanks pal. Thats great the farmer allowed u to use some of his land. 😉👍
Thanks Tony, I just found your video and I’ve subscribed. I love those buckets, I’ll try and buy some thing similar. I’ve never grown potatoes 🥔 before, however this has inspired me. Watching from down under, Australia 🇦🇺🐨
Bought these, I have 8 x50 L buckets. All filled with potatoes
Welcome to channel. Check out the video from yesterday I’m sure it be right up your street
I am growing Charlotte early and Russets late. first time and wish me luck .Thanks, for showing me what to do.

I'm growing Pentland Javelin as 1st earlies and Charlotte as 2nd earlies
Just copied this method step for step, will update you in June, thank you.

I would like to see a video at the end. Identifying when the crop is ready. When you chop the top off and then store the bucket. I am new to this lol i have been gardening for 3 weeks. Currently got broccoli, carrots, peas, parsnip, tomatoes, catnip, cress and soon some strawberries
Daniel check out the potato playlists there is 2 of them and it covers all stages of growing harvesting and storing potatoes
I am experimenting with various way to raise potatoes this year. I will be growing Irish Cobbler and a version of the red potatoes sold at the local fee store.
Thats great Sally. Keep me informed of your progress please
Hi Tony,
I have just recently found you and have found many things that will make life a lot easier. I have never planted potatoes in pots before so I am planting all my potatoes that way now. I am using Bonnie and Wilja for earlies and King Edwards and Kerr's pinks for main crop.
Hi, Firstly, welcome to the channel, Thanks for subscribing and for commenting. I love chatting to subscribers. The pots really are a great way to grow, just make sure u keep them moist
Ty Tony.
Any time ChristophersMum
ill be growing Purple Viking, Purple Majesty, and some form of Red and Gold types as well. also for sweets, Murasaki, Okinawa, Beauregard, Stokes Purples. cant wait for the 2020 season!
Wow, all great varieties there Ryan. I cant wait for the weather to dry up and start to get crops out
Brill video - I m growing some of my potatoes in buckets - but some outside too. First year for potato’s so darn excited. Can’t remember what I m growing other than Maris piper!! :)

like the idea of storing them in the buckets
I live by the sea so I use old plastic 40l cans, ones that have lost their lid and being thoroughly scoured inside and out. Also, old buckie pots.
Growing Sharps express for early and Rooster for mains
Perfect and growing in buckets and storing them there works brill
I often wondered if, living by the sea, you ever have to salt your homemade chips? 😂
I lived in Gt Yarmouth for a number of years, as a boy, and the old fellas used to tell me "Just add vinegar to your chips". Lol.
Really great thanks 👍
Thank you Trevor glad you enjoyed it
Dicided I need to start growing my own veggie and it’s not as simple as I thought 😂 got a lot of videoed to watch and a lot of learning to do !
I have 400 videos for you to do just that with new ones every week :)
Second year here .. just keep tryi g things .. soon u will be growing
Nobody is a perfect gardener and the moment you accept that the more relaxed you'll be in your approach and the more successful, as a result.
Adaptability is the best habit to develop, because no two sides of a garden are the same, much less two separate gardens and every plant responds differently.
If something isn't working don't keep doing it...try a different approach and never be afraid to ask.
We all started somewhere and we're all still learning.
A year has gone by since you posted your comment and, by now, you'll have had your first season of experience.
Once the gardening bug bites you there's no going back. 😂
Enjoyed the video I'm just getting ready to plant potatoes in containers O congratulations 6 nations we forgot to turn up BA94 Antrim Ireland
Hey William. Thanks mate oh the Rugby what a game. Check out my new spud video from a couple days ago mate, might be of interest to you
Great video, I'm growing potatoes for the first time, I'm growing rocket, and king Edward's this year,
Nice Anthony. Im sure we are in for a great harvest
Never grown potatoes ever so I have no clue about varieties! This year I’m gonna try Swift,Nicola, Winston, Maris pier, and some Charlotte that went to seed in from the supermarket. I also got quite a few free from outside the Garden centre they where getting rid of. I’ve no idea what to expect but I’m gonna cover them all up tomorrow!
That is excellent growing potatoes is my most favourite thing to grow and there isnt much I dont grow. Let me know how they do Kyla. sorry for the late reply :)
After seeing your videos (I've watched lots think they're great), I'm going to try potatoes in buckets this year. Charlotte, Rooster, Rocket and Maris Piper. Splitting the sets with a friend who's also giving it a try. Wondered where you got your wire cattle fencing from in another video and the loose bags of feed/fertiliser that are in this video. Thanks
Good luck!
Charlotte, deseree & pentland javelin I’ve grown Charlotte before and the taste is superb. Boiled or if small boil in skin the fry in hot butter for 3 to 5 minutes on the flat cut side then shake the pan to cove4 them in butter. Larger ones make good roasts.
See if I have luck with the others. I’ll more than likely end up giving some to my neighbours.
Awesome Leon
Hi Tony. Really loves your video guide. Very informative and easy to understand. Just a quick question. I think you said you used 10 gallon bucket. I went to the website and saw 30 liter and 35 liter bucket. Which is the size that you used? Thanks.
Found your channel about 2 months ago maybe a little longer and I love it. I was wondering if you have any videos on pruning apple trees or could you please possibly make one about pruning apple trees thanks
Hi Epic. welcome to the network good to have you. glad your enjoying the content. take a look at this and search the playlist if its not what you want :) ua-cam.com/video/9ulsgG1UW1I/v-deo.html
UK Here We Grow thank you
@Jo jo Britains craziest worm loving woman !! i have my own worm farms and produce my own thanks
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
I recently watched a video where the guy did an experiment using different growing mediums and the best one....which he thought wouldn't be any good...was 'forest floor scrapings'. He did, however, add some blood meal and something else to each one. Not only did he get a nice yield, the potatoes came out much cleaner. Can't get any better price point, either. Just a bit of hard work, collecting the 'forest floor scrapings'.
Yes but thats not very sustainable either, imagine if everyone started doing that, there would be no forrest floor left either
We’re expats living in Portugal, where the ground gets baked each summer. We have a number of very old pine trees nearby, and got hundreds of barrows of the ‘mulch’ beneath the trees over the last 3 years. We spread that over the ground to help retain moisture. It also keeps the weeds down. It’s worked a treat so far.
@@simplifygardening That's my thought too
That’s the channel called Home Grown Veg 😊 I saw that one too
Hi Tony, im a new gardener this year, no allotment, just a small back garden so potatoes are going in buckets to stand in my even smaller front garden but I am doing charlotte universal kidney(seaweed and all)and sarpo mira maincrop after watching your video, your advice is second to none, they say you cant teach an old dog new tricks, well this 68yr old is learning fast, keep up the good work, christine
Oh Thanks so much Christine. I am so glad your growing your own. ALthough I have plenty of space on my allotment I try to give others the way to garden no matter how small a garden they have, or how large. I just want to inspire others to give it a go and see and taste the difference :) Thanks for commenting
you are definitely an inspiration, Thank you
Thank you so much Christine it means the world when folks appreciate the time taken :)
GROWING POTATOES WITHOUT HILLING THEM!!!!....... Omgosh this is fabulous. I am so doing this. This is the way. I HATE hilling potatoes. I dont know why I have not heard of this before but I definitely can't argue with your results. Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤ I am going to grow all of my potatoes this way.
you will love it I am sorry for the late reply, YT didnt tell me about your comment. I just found it
@@simplifygardening well thank you for getting back, even late. 😁
I'm growing sarpo una, sarpo blue Danube and sarpo mira this year. Followed your method of growing Charlotte potatoes for Christmas and had great results using the rapeseed straw. Just wondered whether you would use it this time of the year too?
Hi Tony, thanks for your information. Really enjoy the videos. Can I ask what size bucket you use for potatoes? Thank you. 😊
Love it thank you. What size pots are you using 30 litre ?
I'm growing Charlotte and desirees. All in buckets
Great varieties Patrick
