  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara takes a look at the origins of the first Green Lantern, Alan Scott!

RUMINATIONS: So now that the Entity stuff was done with, I had to figure out what to do with Dr. Linksano. The character was a villain and I really didn’t have any more hijinks in mind for another humorous storyline, so he needed to have a reason to be around. It occurred to me that Dr. Insano served as a kind of technical and scientific advisor for Spoony, thus Dr. Linksano could be reformed and work for the good guys, especially since Linkara didn’t really have anybody on hand to do science stuff for him. He usually just did the science stuff himself, but sometimes you need your main character to have stuff exposited TO them.
And this introduces the cybermats into things! I’m obsessed with the little creatures, have been since I was a little kid watching Doctor Who. Always wanted a toy for them, too, and the bump-and-go one is OKAY (would have certainly made me happy as a kid), but it seems baffling to me that even though the EPISODE where the modern cybermat premieres features the Doctor using one with a remote control, there hasn’t been a remote control version of it. I’ve been trying to create a perfect one ever since then. The closest is one seen in more recent episode that was thanks to both Featherweight and an awesome fan who did robotics and remote control stuff. It’s still larger than I’d prefer it be, but it does a crap-ton of cool stuff, so I’m still grateful.

In the Bronze Age, that was the case, except the Lanťern had collided with the Starheart, a meteor in which the Guardians had infused all of the magical energy they could collect. That's why HIS ring was magical and not scientific.

That's sound like a good retcon and have Alan Scott got his ring from an ancient Power Battery and Green Lantern ring that were left behind long ago and use it to become a superhero.
Why the heck did DC ever think of it during the Post-Crisis or the New 52 reboot timelines? Or maybe do an imprint universe similar to Marvel's Ultimate Marvel imprint universe?
      Just saying...

Wait a minute. He can walk through walls, disappear and fly? Which would make him more unique than the other guy... Are we reading Green Lantern's origin story or Danny Phantom's?
    Also:
Alan Scott: "What do you, the people at home think?"

Young Alan Scott was just 23
When he built a train bridge with his company
Designed to improve commute and industry
(Shining light on evil as the Green Latern)
When it blew up, his whole crew died
      But somehow Alan Scott survived
There was a bright green flash, everything got strange
A voice came from the lantern of the train??
      (Green Lantern)
When he first woke up he realized
It was up to him to fight bad guys
He could walk through walls, disappear and fly
(Much more unique than that Dekker guy)
It was then that he knew what he to do
Had to put a stop to guys in suits
He’s here to fight for me and YOU

Using the same kind of logic and reasoning that Linkara used on the Entity by deconstructing his plans for world domination is yet another reason I like AT4W. It's important to realize that not every encounter with a villain is going to be the same and that there is always the chance at redemption. It's a lesson I think storytellers in the modern age should take to heart.

That whole “Death. Life. Power.” is an untapped mine. It could be a cool new reboot series.
Just think about it, a gigantic green meteorite crashes into the earth and it speaks those words to the locals, and then kills them, leaving only one alive, and giving him power, after carving the metal into a smaller object, a Lantern. Over the years, the metal is passed onto more and more people, leaving a trail of death, life, and power in its wake. Eventually, the now Chinese-Lantern shaped green metal, thought worthless, is given to a mental patient. The patient carves into a smaller-sized lantern, where it chants “Death. Life. Power.” It kills the mental patient, but gives every patient their sanity back, fulfilling Death and Life, but not power. Not yet. Then, the government catches wind of it, and sends it across the country, in a train, where it crashes, killing everyone on board. Then, it revives the closest man, Alan Scott, who then is gifted the Power, who then carved it into its final, smallest form, a ring.
It could be a great series, where Alan Scott is morally ambiguous. To continue using the power, he saves lives, but his enemies die, sometimes by Alan murdering them, by killing them in self defense, or even, sometimes in heart attacks.

After seeing this comic, I can see why they decided to make Alan Scott gay in the New 52. Alan Scott is one of my favorite Green Lanterns: the mystical nature of his powers, the vulnerability to wood, the fact that unlike most of his colleagues he's left handed, his status as Batman's predecessor as the protector of Gotham, the fact that both of the women he married are ex-super villains, and his kids are pretty cool too.
I have to call shenanigans on the phasing through the walls and roof when they theoretically have wooden beams. On the other hand I guess the train engineer can know about other dimensional physics when later on he's going to be a radio mogul. How many degrees do you have, Mr. Alan?
On the other hand, I like the fact that the Lantern says it's fuel is "willpower." It makes me wonder if this is what gave Geoff Johns the idea for Emotional Spectrum. Green is the color of Willpower.

As he said in the video, they keep trying to make out that Hal Jordan is the greatest GL. But I felt that Kyle Rayner is the greatest of them all.
He was picked at random (Ganthet gave the ring to the first person he saw, which was Kyle) but yet rose among the ranks (I'm pretty sure he was a GL honour guard at one point), he was the last of the Green Lanterns and was chosen to defeat Hal/Parallax, he overcame great tragedy (The death of two girlfriends, Alex and Jade, and the death of his mother) and even became the host of freakin' Ion, the entity of willpower!
Although Alan is still a personal favourite superhero, I just like the classical pulp vibe/look :)

  • @jamesadamsfl
    @jamesadamsfl 7 років тому +13

It's kind of interesting to look on this and see all the little changes that have been made to Alan Scott and all the things this story may have inspired. For example, someone later decided to switch the ring to Scott's other hand and make him possibly DC's most famous left handed hero. Or the fact that he went from being an engineer to a broadcast mogul somehow (I don't see a lot of crossover in those two fields).
On the other hand, the Lantern claims it's fuel is "willpower," and it was revealed that in the emotional spectrum, Green is the color of Will. We also later got to see that "The Green" was the mystical force of plant life, and why wood was immune to the Lantern's powers. And am i the only one who looks at that picture of Alan Scott cradling his buddy's dead body and thinks to himself " THIS is why Alan Scott is gay in the New 52?" Honestly, I look at that image, and if I didn't know better, I'd swear it was part of the original plan.

Ah, Linksano's reformation, one of my favourite concepts from the Post-Entity Storylines. It's a shame that we don't see him very often, whether it be because of him being took out due to story-line stuff or because he's busy doing SCIENCE! stuff. It would be nice to see Linksano get his own mini-story, kinda like the Harvey storyline, only with a humourous tone rather than the more serious tone of Harvey's storyline, but I doubt that we'll get that any time soon.

    • @dannybuckle3763
      @dannybuckle3763 6 років тому +2

I'm afraid that I'm not a big fan of that idea. Linksano is a good supporting character and is the main source of the non-enchanted technology that they use. If anything, I'd say just bring back Insano every once in a while. Noah and Lewis are still good friends as far as I am aware, so if they could schedule it in advance the encounters could be done with relative ease.
Another idea I've had though is that this Contest of Champions arc could be used to flesh out the Rogues Gallery a bit. Think about it, Lewis has already said that all of next year is going to be a big celebration of AtopTheFourthWall's tenth anniversary by almost exclusively reviewing comics associated with past reviews, and in the past few years his Rogues have been took out one by one; Linksano's reformed, The King of Worms is dead and dissected, Mechakara is torn apart on one of Saturn's moons, and both Vyce and The Entity were bested again in the last arc, with only Insano remaining.
Basically, I think that 2019 is going to be a fresh start, with Linkara making several enemies via defeating and sparing them in battle during the Contest who will return around that point, as well as the followers of Vyce that have been offhandedly mentioned once or twice (admittedly I did not think of the followers myself, but the idea makes sense and fits with the idea of building up the Rogues). Hell, maybe he'll combine both and have a follower of Vyce be in the Contest. It makes sense and could lead to some interesting stories about how inspirational Vyce was in the hearts and minds of his subjects in his conquered worlds.
It's all speculation of course, but I really hope that the direction Lewis takes with the Contest is at least somewhat similar to this. The timing, the fact that most of his rogues are reformed or dead, the fact that a contest allows for a ton of new characters to pop up, everything aligns perfectly.

I genuinely think that a film adaptation of Alan Scott's Green Lantern would potentially be really good. Keep the period setting, give it a stylised, western visual aesthetic (which would be a breath of fresh air for a superhero film) and expand on the character of Scott and his beginnings as the Green Lantern.

My first Green Lantern I assume was John Stuart because of the justice League. I became more affiliated with Hal Jordan later on. I didn't find out about Kyle Reiner until around 8 months ago through you Linkara. I knew about Guy Gardner and others a few years before because of Batman the brave and the bold. I knew about the Green Lanterns being like the army because of Justice League.

Thing is, I'd like to see an expansion of the Alan Scott mythos for the Green Lantern, especially regarding the Chinese _wuxing_ elements. It'd be cool to see a version of the Lantern Corps that are based around each of the five phases.

Yea people often mooks Scotts weakness to wood due to it not making snence. But it perfect sense knowing his origin and how in Wuxing Wood and Metal are in antagonism to each other.
That or fire wich destroys metal but has no power over wood. Being fueled by it instead.
