Southgate said in his post match interview that Phil was still playing well just he had less energy so getting palmer on is almost a like for like sub so they went for it to give fresh legs there.

imo, if its a goal that no one would complain about if it were on the halfway line, its a foul in the penalty box. his studs landed hard on the top of harry kanes foot, no effort to soften the blow. its a foul, therefore its a pen. a lot of people seem to think that if the ball is out of play, you can do what you want, obviously thats not true, if he just bumped harry afterwards and he went down thats one thing, but he was very close to breaking a metatarsal, which are easy asf to break. anyone who says it isnt a penalty, doesnt know the rules

The ref had already decided in the moment that it wasn't a penalty, and VAR cannot make a decision themselves- they can only either recommend a review (as they did) or allow play to continue.
I don't think there is any way they really do it, it's different from game to game. In a different game VAR might have thought for themselves it's a pen but wouldn't have told the ref because its not an obvious mistake. Until the rules are more clear and actually followed by everyone VAR is gonna stay either random or probably bought in some cases

Mark you keep talking about the referee saying he’s bottled it but the decision was referred from VAR: meaning the ref didn’t actually give in real time as he didn’t think it was a pen. Now we all know as soon as they get sent to the monitor 99/100 it’s going to be overturned.. so has he bottled it really? Why not he the other officials in the VAR room?
Foden has been unlucky all tournament, either hit the woodwork with worldies, been offside by an inch, had chances created ruined. He’s the type of player vs Spain that will thrive

IT IS A PK - 2 reasons 1.) OBV messes up Kanes follow thru/directing of the shot which isnt far off as his leg is stopped short of being able to fully control the shot and its stopped short by someone who made NO ball contact and oh yea he did it with reason 2.) a HIGH STUDS UP challenge - the def took a risk and came up short...better team won

Start Watkins for Kane. Bring Kane on later for a midfielder like Foden if we are winning. Kane can hold up the ball, win fouls, spray passes anywhere, defends corners and balls into the box well.
There’s still a space in the side for him but we just shouldn’t be playing him as the tip of the Spear esp when you have someone as clinical and electric as Watkins.
Thought Rice was our worst player tonight, caught in possession way too much including for the goal, passing crap, offered nothing going forward.

We actually played well, Foden more central has made him work. Think we need to be starting Shaw in the final and definitely watkins or Toney. Kane hasn't performed at all, even in this game but especially against spain, i imagine we will be counter attacking a lot and we need someone with pace. If we play Kane he'll either drop too far back or will hold the ball up and slow down any counter.

I think it was a penalty, but can see why this has divided opinion.
Kane had already followed trough on the shot when his foot collided with the Dutch defender. But defender's stood's were up, and it was a potentially dangerous challenge. Technically, the ball was still in the area when the offence happened, so it was a foul.
That being said, if that happened to us, we'd be furious. It's a bizarre technicality.
The pen I do agree with only due to the defender going into the tackle with his studs up directly pointing at kane and the contract was made after the ball was out the way, now I understand a defender needs to go for the ball but I believe he went about it the wrong way and it was just unlucky for the Dutch but I stand by what I said it was a penalty.

Beginning to think Goldbridge is Scottish or something, so negative about England this whole tournament. Barely even celebrates the goals.
100% pen anywhere else on the pitch that’s a foul. You see them all the time, fullback clears the ball attacker tries to block it is a bit late and defender kicks the bottom of his boot free kick.
Yeah, that’s not a thing.
Context matters there are a million things that get given as a foul on goalkeepers that would never be a pen.
1) The "anywhere else on the pitch" argument doesn't (ever) work for me; referees often give free kicks for very, very little and can afford to do so because free kicks are far less likely to result in a goal than a penalty (especially if the free is way out the pitch).
2) Could you really describe what Dumfries did as "kicking the bottom of his boot"? If so, could you not also describe what Kane did as "kicking the bottom of his (Dumfries') boot"? For me, Dumfries stuck out a leg to block the shot and Kane kicked him in the act of shooting- nothing wrong with that of course, but it doesn't make it a foul on Kane.
The ref never bottled it, VAR did but we'll take a bit of good luck. Remember Diego in 86.

I didn’t think it was a penalty at first, but looking back I understand why the ref gave it. It was a reckless high boot, so it’s a foul, even though the shot was already off. Kane took the SHOT. Players are tripped all the time after getting their shots away. And reckless doesn't matter foul is a foul, you can't give it a penalty just because it was more reckless. And it wasn't even reckless Kane also hit him in his follow through
For those that think this result vindicates Southgate are deluded. Great result and well done Southgate for getting the right subs on albeit a little later than needed. He made a massive clanger going into the competition without out a trusted left back or left wing back. Yesterday we were crying out for a raiding left wing back and he had Trippier on, he made the substitution we were all calling for at half time and bought on a clearly under par Shaw virtually paralysing our left side. So no I’m not changing my mind about Southgate. Koeman without the riches Southgate has at his disposal almost pulled it off if not for Palmer and Watkins extraordinary strike.

Huge mistake by NL only playing 3 in midfield in the 1st half and being overrun by Mainoo and Foden, 2nd half was a bit of a turgid chess match again as the Dutch nullified our midfield. Different story coming up Sunday with a Spain midfield of Rodri and Pena who are quality compared to NL. Means we'll need a stormer by the wings and let's hope and prey he starts Shaw and leaves Trippier in the changing room. Spain massive favourites but the best team doesn't always win.

Kane in his current state wouldn’t have scored that goal. He should’ve been subbed much earlier. Mainoo was brilliant first half but as with youngsters ran out of puff after 60 minutes. Once he gets the stamina for 90 minutes he’s heading for great things. Palmer and Watkins you would think that they have made a claim to start in the final. But they won’t, so I’m not praising Southgate for getting one thing right in a single match. Oh and he subbed Trippier correctly at half time, but Shaw offered less, I was hoping he would have put Gordon on. With Saka and Gordon raiding both flanks we could’ve made lighter work of the Dutch.
