Avoid a Trip to the Hospital: Wear Gloves

- One of the most frequent comments I get on this channel is from folks sharing their experiences of accidentally cutting themselves while whittling and wood carving, with some even having to visit the hospital for stitches. To avoid nasty deep cuts and it is important to prioritize your safety by wearing gloves, especially if you are a beginner.

The old adage "you can cut more off but can't put it back on" particularly applies to fingers.
I remember when i was following along with your chessboard tutorial(i finished it btw, one of the best things I've ever made)my mom got me some gloves because i kept nicking myself, and the day after she got them, I thought "nahhh i just wont use them yet" AND THAT SAME DAY I ALMOST CUT MY THUMB OFF😭😭 Anyways wear your gloves guys👍
Gotta wear em!!
My hands were a mess even before I started wood carving LOL - I used work gloves in the past, but my carving gloves are helpful. Also - the few times, "Oh I'm just doing a few strokes, so I don't need my glove for something so quick." - Then *slice* oh I cut myself!!!
Safety first people, safety first. Great vids as always.
I have tried tons of gloves for whittling, and the coated ones wear out. So I use the bandage wrap on the gloves at the thumb and pointer for added protection when I used them. Now I use leather gloves with reinforced leather pads on the tips. They don't wear out nearly as fast and give better grip. I soaked them and let them dry on my hands to get a perfect fit and they work for many other arts like hand and machine quilting, needle felting, crocheting, and while working on scroll saws or other woodworking projects.
I definitely took your advice when I started as I am clumsy as hell
I've cut myself once (so far 😬) and was very lucky - the knife slipped somehow, but I was wearing gloves AND it somehow managed to miss my thumb entirely, so instead stabbed point-first into my palm. Cut a hole through the glove and my skin but it could've been soooo much worse if I wasn't wearing gloves. Didn't even need stitches! Very glad I was wearing gloves! Wear them!!
started carving recently...and i was like, i got this don't need gloves! cut myself two time, one time a little in my finger because i wasnt paying attention..and the other time a deeper cut in my hand because the wood broke off, needed to bandage that up for a few days. learned my lesson, waiting on my gloves now😂
30 years ago I was testing my freshly sharpened Swiss Army Knife on a piece of wood. I was holding the wood and forcing the knife through the wood. Yah the tip sliced my palm next to my thumb 1/2” deep. 18 stitches and out of work for 2 weeks. So yah I wear Kevlar gloves now.
Brian I never cut myself yet been a carver for 4 years now bur a hook knife im always knicking my thumb so I use that wrap around my thumb 🇮🇹👍🐾🦊🇺🇲
I am new to carving and I watch your video because you wear gloves.
I was wearing gloves from the beginning but I think that actually made me become a little careless. Slipped and got a puncture cut (most gloves won't protect you from those) in my index finger. Got a few stitches but luckily it's just a scar. Still, now I'm wearing a glove PLUS some additional tape around my thumb and index finger.
I can see that happening, but ya punctures are hard to prevent with just gloves. Thankfully it wasn't too terribly bad.
I wear a glove on my left hand,,,, well now I do😂. I tape my right hand thumb now😅
I carve with a box cuter and it works good and I have a lot of control over it.
I get cocky think I know where not to put my fingers then bam wood breaks and cut , I would like to say I learn but 6 serious cuts later I now have a sign in my room saying wear gloves dummy , I also have nerve damage 😂
Oooch!! Nerve damage is no good!
And ye i swear a glove the number of times ive cut myself wen i dont wear one it makes it so u can just concentrate on your carving good advice
I always use safety glasses while carving if the knife tip breaks tho. Fingers heals, eyes dont
I am looking at getting a basic set of tools and was looking at Flexcut. They offer a Rockler handle with interchangeable blades, do you have any experience with these?
Ya know, Ive seen these but have yet to buy one and put them through their paces. I have heard that they are a good option though and are a good choice.
Isnt it also possible to also cut your right pointer finger? Should i get a bandage or glove for that too?
Depends on how your handling the knife, but from my experiences it isn't necessarily
I use gloves on the non dominant hand but can t bear myself to use tape on the dominant one. I feel like the friction is way off and it feels very unprecise
gotta do what feels comfortable for ya.
If you carve you will absolutely cut yourself! I use super glue for smaller cuts 2 to 3 stitches any over that I go to the doc. Also depends how deep you cut yourself. Wear gloves and use the tape it helps a ton!
I love your Channel. I want to ask some thong. I want to buy two Helvie knives. I think in 1 3/4" and medium detail 1 1/4". Do you think this is ok? Regards
Thats what I have :) So yes, I say go for it.
@@CarvingisFun thank you very much
@@CarvingisFun I have doubts with the type of handle🤔🤔🤔🤔which would be the most recommended? Birdtail, knudkegrip, double...???? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I personally use and like the birdtail handles, they just fit my had right
@@CarvingisFun thanks.
Currently waiting in A&E for stitches because I didn't wear a glove. This video had been out for 2 hours when my 'accident' happened!
Oh nooooo!
I hope you have a good recovery!!
@@CarvingisFun Thank you. I'm still waiting! 5+ hours at A&E is a very good lesson!
Are you carving Oscar the grouch?
I could see that, but no its a racoon in a trash can :) Something a little cuter.
Haha shame were not in the same county as i always have an abundance of left gloves as wear them when im weeding ("professional" gardener) and always wear out the fingers on the right hand maybe 2 pairs in a good month if i dont lose them!
To be fair though i hate wearing gloves for most thing even dealing with roses and thorns I prefer to feel what im doing and hate that disconnect so definitely dont for carving BUT my hands look like they belong to a troll or something so not so much collateral
Gloves are necessary
What wood do you use?
I use basswood
@@CarvingisFunMe to! Just wanted to make sure bc yours cuts so muck easier
Mine is air dried and it seems to cut like butter :)
@@CarvingisFun I’ll have to do that to! Thanks a lot
U sound exactly like somrine else i watch alex lacasse i might of got the name abit wrong is it u 😊
Nope, I is Brian :)
I cut myself, I damaged the nerves on the tip of my index finger. But I still don't wear a glove 😅 I don't know, it's just kinda uncomfortable, plus I've only cut myself once, so I like to think I'm pretty careful with the knife, hope I don't get any more serious cuts 🤞
Some people learn quick :)
Month ago almost cut my thumb in half, while try cut some hard candy in half 😀
ouchy!!! hopefully the candy was really really good!
