There are a lot of different ones out there, but here are the ones that I personally use which offer a great balance of cost to quality: Schaaf Tools Sharpening Stone - amzn.to/49GQLw6 Sharp Pebble Whetstone - amzn.to/49vNX4K Beavercraft leather strop - amzn.to/3ULve0T 3M wet dry sandpaper - amzn.to/49vNX4K
As im on a budget i have had to buy a whittling kit off amazon and i was wondering what side of the leather strop should i apply the compound to the smooth or suede side. i've also read that i should use both sides of it depending on what im trying to achieve so im very confused if you could help that would be useful.
In my opinion, there is little to no difference in sharpness from one side to the other. But the rough side is easier to apply to than the smooth side. This video should ansany questions you have ua-cam.com/video/5Tt3K-kXhJc/v-deo.html
Im used to use a japanese water stone 1000/6000 king , but was to annoying to have to soak it each time, and then i had to reflatten it, so i bought a sharpal dual sided 350 - 1200 diamond stone, and now i only use diamond stone because i get just as good result, if not better, and i can sharpen when i need to whitout waiting, also i like using mineral oil as lapping fluid because washing them is quit a pain to me... then i use a cheap beavercraft strop with a 6k grit compound and i get a half shaving sharp edge.. I'd like to try an oil stone aswell... also for gouges is it ok to just debur the inside with 1k sand paper and call it done?
I started with some cheap dual sided water stones. It was a hassle soaking them, then the 400 grit got so clogged up it feels almost like glass. I upgraded to shapton stones 220 1000 2000. They are great and dont require soaking, just splash and go
Hello again! A Little help. I want to buy a diamonds stones to sharp my whittling knifes. But I am quite lose in which grid to get. I have seen from 400 grid up to 8000 grid. I want to be covered but is to many grids and I don't have expirience. Heheh Which grids do you recomend? Thanks
Howdy! This video will cover everything in detail for ya ua-cam.com/video/oF432CMib3c/v-deo.html But I only use a 400 grit, 1000 grit, and a 2000 grit stone. Then I use a leather strop to maintain the sharp edge for 90% of the time carving
Well, the really good ones have a 8 to 18 month wait list (Helvie and Drake). But some other good ones are Silvern Works, Deepwoods Ventures, Lee Furguson, Pinewood Forge, and also some online specialty sellers like Mountain Woodcarvers, TreeLine USA, Hummel Carving, and Bigfood Carving Tools
I’ve got a really good quality diamond plate, but when I used it, my blade cutting edge burred and went even more blunt, is there something I might be doing wrong? If so, please could you suggest a technique? Thank you! 😊
Buy a good quality diamond plate, the problem of lesser quality ones is that the finer sides are contaminated with coarse grit so even though they work they're the same as the coarse one
@@CarvingisFun yup, and best of all since diamond crystals cut so fast you can get away even with a little card hon for woodturners and they cut so well you can transition to a 1000-2000 stone no problem
It would be cool if they made a power sharpener like that with variable speed, and the belt or stone had some cooling method like running the belt through water.
There are some with water, but they are expensive and round which leaves a concave grind of which I dont like. Ive looked all over and cant find anything perfect. Maybe I'll have to make one........
@CarvingisFun but hey, let me ask you a question: Do your hands go numb after a bit when you sharpen? My right hand goes numb, and I wonder if it just happens to me and if I should be worried.
Best recommendations for the sharpening tools

For the gouges, honestly thats exactly what I do at times, but with 2k grit. Works well enough, and I don't notice a difference.

Facts right here. You want a diamond plate, dont cheap out. You can litteraly feel the difference when running your hand on them.

Maybe you're putting too much pressure on the stone? You really dont need to apply much pressure at all
You can clean the ceramic sticks with an eraser.
I keep hearing this but never actually tried it! Gonna see how that goes tonight
@@CarvingisFun What was the result?
I completely forgot to do it!
Making a note so I remember this time. So much pulling my attention lately.
@@CarvingisFun All good
Most of the cheap whetstones on Amazon like the Sharp Pebble are all made in the same factory. And they are complete garbage. They wont last very long
