Amazing production, performances and perfect digital and visual quality on the Trussville , AL movie screen; a memorable and extraordinary opera experience!
Having seen the landmark Louise Brooks silent film, "Pandora's Box," in the 1970s, one would think they knew the story; however, as translated through Marlis Peterson's voice, body language, mannerisms and especially her eyes, revealing to us what is oblivious to her many doomed admirers, we are brought closer to Lulu's genuine soul; allowed so close, yet distant, to a woman who alternatively dangerously alluring and yet humanly pitiable. The ironic twist of a "fictional" character murdered by a historical figure makes retrospection of the entire story all the more surreal and sad. Maybe she deserved punishment, all the men certainly did; she did not deserve the fate that befell her and the Countess. The Countess, whose final epiphany of life-changing decisions, is an equally cynical paradox.
Kudos to the camera operators. One never knew in which direction the camera would move; to the wonderfully Dadaist-themed backdrop or the clever use of the non-singing, and great perf by Joanna Dudley; bringing a silent and evocative, provocative and otherworldly quality, like an alter ego - especially when Lulu walks over and presses her against Dudley's. Wow.
Although a live performance, at the Metropolitan Opera, would be the preferred manner to see "Lulu," I appreciate the director's mercurial manner of changing our perspective with actor close ups and the myriad movements of the backdrop.
It was also a treat to have interviews and background information shared during the intermissions, which, at least for me, brought me closer to the creative and ongoing processes of a living opera production. In short, a masterpiece by everyone involved. Thank you!

Doesn't look so good. At least the girl is barely wearing anything. Right?
