Small improvement might be a small 45 degree groove on the bottom of your front fence for dust particles to go so they don't mess up with alignment when you're cutting multiple pieces. I forgot to do that on my sled and now I just keep a brush at hand whenever I use it and clean it out after every cut. Will definitely do that next time :)
Nice one John, An Irish Man here - living in Manila - getting back into woodworking, Must have been the only Class in School I was interested !!, Keep going dude - ill pop in and out of your channel to see what your getting up to - Be Good
Very impressed with you cross cut sled design there John, will be making myself up one of those. Also, it's got to be said that; you certainly have a good way of explaining things and that you're videos are really well produced. Found your UA-cam channel yesterday, have subscribed and liked, as there's much really good information you share.
A great addition John, thoughtfully put together as well. I'm intrigued by the stove that you've shown glimpses of in the last couple... Will stay tuned!
Probably the most impressive crosscut sled I've seen to date ... It is safe, highly accurate and capable of taming even large pieces of material. Color me impressed ... Cheers and stay safe!!
Nice sled John and well made... If you are going to use it for your cutting boards, consider adding a few threaded inserts for additional hold downs nearer the blade at the far end (for when you get to the narrow end of the cuts) ifyou get what i mean.
Very nice crosscut sled. The problem with a big crosscut sled is they are heavy and you must find a place to store it. I now use a Incra Miter 5000 Sled and it is almost unwieldy.
Top notch! Thank you for the inspiration! I recently found myself in a very fortunate position to buy a full line-up of Bosch saw machines. They are all still in there boxes but as soon as find the time the first project will be an attempt to emulate your slide. Thank you very much for sharing! / Bjorn
Just subscribed. I built one for my P-C table saw. But for some reason, after I cut the kerf, it wouldn't slid anymore. I guess I'll have to start over. Originally used White Oak for the runners. Think I'll switch over to Ipe. I have a couple of strips of that that should work great.
John love this will have to find out where to boil the kit but this will be brilliant for me on my table salt as you know I can’t see my hands. Hope you’re okay and all your family is safe specially with this new variant going around stay safe look forward to the next one
John watching your video you mentioned the carpentry store. I just surfed the store as I was looking the tracks and clamps in your video. I tried for tracks and thought I would have to send to USA for these. Thanks for your info on the store and what they have. It is great place and not expensive? Thanks John
Nice sled with good Ideas. I am In the process of building one too for my Metabo TS 254 M. Just a suggestion, next time you might want to make your runners out of those cheap plastic (don´t know how that plastic Is called) food cutting boards found In some Asian shops. I have found 8mm and 10mm thick cutting boards and can be bought for 5€. They will last a lot longer and slide better then wood.
Nice video as always John, although I am not a fan of these myself mainly due to the fact there is no guard over the blade. It would be very interesting to see maybe for a future video if you could come up with answer to this, perhaps how the guard could retract as you make a cut sort of like a chop saw or radial arm saw works, and maybe a stop that prevents the sled going to far forwards and not exposing the blade through your additional block on your fence.
Hi John, this is a super video thanks! One query - my riving knife sits 40mm higher than the top of the blade and I notice yours seems to be slightly below, did you have to alter your riving knife?
Greetings from USA 🇺🇸. Nice jig, thanks for sharing your trade. I have a question?. Does the expression Happy Days you keep on saying means something like : Good results? This is just my guess.
Hi John, About to begin making the cross cut sled. I know they are arbitrary but can you let me know what distance you put your T traks from the blade. Looking forward to your next presentation. Regards Paul
Well done. I have a Jet table saw with a sliding fence on the left. It is good but I am left with only one guide on the right side of the blade. Would your rig stay on track with only one guide?
Great video John, I'm going to build one for my table saw. I'm trying to find the machine paste you mention. What is the brand and name of the paste you use?
How much you buying the birch ply for John and where you buying it. I'm looking for a large quantity of 19mm and 9mm be greatful for any help you can give
Hi John, great vid fella. 👍. Just a question hopefully not stupid? I just bought an Axminster cabinet table saw and over the moon with it. However I was torn between buying a sliding carriage for it which will do my cross cuts or to build a cross cut sled. And based on birch ply costs and the extras needed there isn’t that much difference in cost between the two. However I noticed you have a sliding carriage on your Bosch table saw, yet you still built a cross cut sled. Any reason for that considering both sort of do the same? Just got me thinking if there are advantages over one or the other. Hope you and family all good and great to see the videos. 👍🥃
The cross cut sled if made right will always be square so no set up needed, it supports the work on both sides of the cut, is zero clearance so better cut quality and is easy to use. You don't need to make it from birch ply or use what I did. They can be made really cheap.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Cheers John. I guess also for me the sliding table sticks far out on the left hand side. So having this would do away with that. Nice one. 👍
As mentioned earlier, I have the same Bosch. Your sled will be difficult to manipulate and store, a bit too large. I made the same mistake starting from 600mm deep, it won't cut 600 at the end :-). Now run the 5 cuts test, you'll be surprised how much you are off... :-(
I ran the 5 cut test just to see, it's less than .01mm out over a 165mm cut the calipers reads 31.05mm both ends of the final cut. If you can't use your squares in your shop to make something square then what's the point in having them.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed 0.1mm out over 1.6M! Thats seriously impressive John. Well done. And you are right, when the square is square, then it's square! So it's what you use!

Very nice, should be handy.
Nice job John. Shop looks just fine, remember, must meet your comfort level.
Interesting, great to see the misstakes that you made. It helps us to better understand what types of things to think twice before you do them.

love your brogue!
Thanks John. Enjoyed learning about this new tool for the shop.
Very welcome

Great video John always love the home made jigs videos
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. I like how you went over what parts you bought for this sled before you started the build.
Glad you liked it

Will do Paul

I have a place to put it so not so bad, a big sled has its advantages and disadvantages

That's a great idea. That material is naturally slippery and perfect for this sort of thing.

You would need at gaurd that could move back as the sled moves forward but it would then hit the back fence it's a difficult one.
Happy days! 😂
Indeed!

@23:20 And its Hip To Be Square!!
hi great sled did you use normal t track or the universal as they are different hights i want to copy yours
G'Day MACCA!! This looks like just the sled I need in my life, Happy Days!! Do you have plans? Oh haha and 16:00 to 16:05 made me giggle!
Drop your nuts! Lol

About to begin making the cross cut sled. I know they are arbitrary but can you let me know what distance you put your T traks from the blade.
Looking forward to your next presentation.

John - done and dusted.
Well done. I have a Jet table saw with a sliding fence on the left. It is good but I am left with only one guide on the right side of the blade. Would your rig stay on track with only one guide?
I would make it smaller in size if it is to run on one guide

Great video John, I'm going to build one for my table saw. I'm trying to find the machine paste you mention. What is the brand and name of the paste you use?
It was from Axminster Paul.
Just subbed buddy👍
Thanks for the sub!

McMahons hardwoods is where I get most of my hardwood and plywood, but 19mm birch ply has gone from 80 to 120 a sheet. Crazy price.
Do you have plans?

Quangsheng, they are more or less identical
Is that a shot for everytime you say square 😂
Go for it lol 🍺🍻🥂
