Hyperlite Mountain Gear MID-1 MID•1 MID1 Ultralight 1 Person Tent - 1st Impressions

- The Hyperlite Mountain Gear MID•1 that I ordered at Trail Days came in and it is definitely typical HMG bomber quality. The build quality is extremely high. Mine weighed in at just over 17 ounces. This is from my 1st weekend overnight with it on the Appalachian Trail in New York near Pawling. I plan to do a more detailed review once I get more time in it.
The tent can be pitched with 4 stakes. However, it works better with 6. The 4 corners should be pretty beefy stakes, as they take all the load holding the tent up. There is an extra tie off point on the pole peak as well as perimeter wall tie outs.

Specs say it requires a 135cm (+/- 5) trekking pole. I also use Fizan Compacts (132cm) - any issues with the height? According to the HMG's "what's included," I also notice it comes with a pole jack.
I am using it with Fizan Compact 3 (PCT edition) with no issues. I also tried it with one of my Leki poles extended to 135 (tip to top of handle) and it is actually too tall unless you squish the tip in the ground pretty far. With the tub loop around the pole tip and under the basket, the Fizan Compact 3 extended to the limit lines pulls the mesh door taught…any higher makes it tighter than I’m comfortable with. I find the jack un-necessary with the Fizan Compact 3. The jack is a nice carbon fiber tube that fits securely on the Fizan pole tip.
@@KrizAkoni Perfect, thanks for the info. It's a very nice touch that they include the jack at all. I think I'll be ordering one of these, coming from a 2016 silnylon Lunar Solo.
Thank you a lot for the early view on this exciting new tent! Great video!
Thank you! There is a lot to like about this design. 🤓
Thanks for sharing Kri!! This looks interesting indeed! I see the appeal in a true pyramid mid with a sewn in floor and netting.
I’m still making friends with it…I think it’s going to work for me.
Great looking tent! Thanks for sharing the review. I was wondering about this one. Very nice! Crow✌️
Thanks! I think this one may turn out to be a popular tent.
I like your honest review its looking really good. drooling here lol. awesome tent. i like that you pointed out the cons too.
Thanks Nicole. I’ll likely to do a follow-up later in the fall to highlight proper pitch, folding, and more pros/cons.
Thanks for sharing your impressions. Looks like easy to pitch and very roomy.
Definitely easy to set up. Liking this one a bunch.
Thanks for the show 👍 be interesting to see how the room is like when the panel pulls are guyed out.
I have a deuchutes and the panel guys make a huge difference to head and toe space.
The panel tie outs made a big difference on my Duplex too. I still need to make up lines for this one.
92in long, so close! 94in length or deal breaker for me. Zpacks offset still my pick. The world needs a 94in long dual wall full dcf tent under 20oz
So close!
Just received my mid 1 and it’s a a little wider than my pro 1 when rolled up but shorter also by a few inches. Actually seems to pack smaller than the Durston Xmid pro 1. Or almost no difference from when I packed its so it’s about the same in my opinion. The stuff sack is large and makes it look larger. Anyone worried about packing size don’t it’s great. Amazing tent so far and I actually love how easy it sets up and that it only uses one pole. Have meet several 2 pole tent backpackers that broke a pole and had 2-3 days trying to make it work. I know that Durston is all the rage now (I had one before this) but this is an amazing tent. nothing again the pro 1 (its great also) this is just a better fit for me...
Agree, the bag makes it look bigger than it is…it rolls very compactly!
The Altra tent Stake driver 😂. Thanks for sharing. Cool tent.
LoL, they have a rock plate…sorta…🤣
very nice first look at the hyperlight mid 1 tent i do like the overall look of the tent one drawback for me is it's definitely see through not very much Privacy . looking forward to your overall review.
Thanks! Yes, it’s a bit translucent…nice at night when the moon is out.
There's a reason this hybrid-mid configuration is shared by at least 6 similar-looking tents I can think of - it's the lightest design that offers what most would agree is a 'real' tent, meaning it protects from the elements, from the ground, and from insects, while allowing its occupant sufficient interior space and movement to perform basic tasks and functions.
I'm unsure what 'bomber' is meant to mean. I've thrown a bomb at much stronger tents and it's completely destroyed them.
😂
Hi Kriz.
Good job on showing the features of this tent.
I went to the Hyperlite site for this tent, they said the price is $599! Regardless of the weight, that seems like a very high price to pay for a tent..
As info I use the REI Quarter Dome 2 and love the room and other features.
Regardless, always enjoy your videos!
Thanks Ken. Yes, the material makes these tents quite expensive, but extremely light. Equivalent Durston, Zpacks, and Tarptent models are about the same price, more or less.
Huge difference in materials. The Hyperlite is 100% waterproof and about 1/3 the weight.
Watching from my hammock at Bear Garden Hostel in Virginia. Tinker (on the rocks) '23 NOBO. Nice tent.
That’s awesome! You’ve got some beautiful trail ahead!
It’s pretty. I like the magnetic 🧲 door holding thingy and the zipper fly is really nice 👍🏼 Did I spy a whole new backpack? 🧐
Yes you spy an archaul 60. Still making friends with it.
Looks pretty sharp and I like all the Pros you mentioned, BUT, the package size of that tent is HUGE. I couldn’t help noticing that as you were standing there holding it.
I mean, the 2 person Durstan or Duplex is got to be around a 1/4 size smaller.
Enjoy!
Huge advantage to the Durston in that department. Its poly floor really does shrink it down.
I did the math and the x-mid pro 1 is roughly 14% smaller than the mid1, the x-mid pro 2 is roughly 13% smaller. The x-mid pro 2 is only 1,85% bigger than the x-mid pro 1, thats crazy
Nice looking tent. I like the magnetic tie back for the main door. The adjustable bathtub walls is a nice touch also. What pillow are you using?
That’s the sea to summit down pillow- it’s a little lighter than the premium one. I don’t think it is as comfortable
Great video 👍. How’s the top vent work out for extra airflow and to help with condensation? That would be the main selling point for me over the Zpacks Plex Solo.
The top vent is better than nothing… I don’t have enough time in it in cooler weather to see if it’s all that effective. So far, condensation has not been an issue.
Nice lightweight one man tent. Will be interested in how you like it after using it in some rain storms.
Same here. We’ll see as time goes on.
@@KrizAkoni It'll be fine in rain. Less good in high winds.
I’m considering the HMG mid 1 tarp
The tarp looks like a pretty cool configuration. They didn’t have it at the time I purchased this, so have not seen one in person.
Good looking tent. Curious to see how it handles condensation and rain.
Condensation has been about the same as the Duplex and Durston Xmid2 Pro. I’ve only had light rain, so too early to say. That being said, this design seems less prone to have the floor poke out from under the fly.
@KrizAkoni thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I am also 6 foot and had a rough night one fall when using a single wall dcf shelter in the rain. I had to cut my trip short by 2 days because everything was soaked! In hindsight, I should have been more diligent in wiping the condensation down.
Great review.. I was wondering what size pad are you using.. I’m using the Big Agnes that’s 30x78 and was trying to compare the floor space between the two..also what pillow are you using..that looks awesome.. thanks and have a great day!!
The pad used on trip is the NeoAir XLite women’s (66”x20”) tapered. My cold weather pad is an XTherm (72”x20”). You”ll have 10” less to work with (your pad will take up most of the 32” floor width. Pillow is the Sea to Summit Aeros Down Pillow. It’s a little lighter than their premium version and more comfortable to me.
Yea I saw this tent at Trail Days a couple of weeks ago and have been looking at it ever since..thanks again for the review and the reply.
Looks pretty nice. How tall a person do you think this tent will work for?
I’m 6’ and there is room…a few more inches and I think there would be interference issues.
Doing the AT this spring, I like this tent. I don’t carry a trekking pole but I do carry a .308 rifle. I’m wondering if I could use that?
135cm is the optimum height…
About to pull a trigger on this one or Durston X Pro 1. What are your thoughts one vs. other? In addition to function, aesthetics matter a lot to me as well. Durston doesn't look great in the pics, mids always come out great in photos. How much more headroom (in) do you have in Durston Pro 1 X vs. Mid 1?
At the pole, it’s about 4”, which is deceptive. The two pole design of the PRO gives greater headroom along a longer portion of the tent and the steeper end walls is better for toe box separation from condensation. I’ve always had a little trouble getting nice pitches with my PRO2 though. Both builds are exceptionally good and you would not go wrong with either one imho. I like the simplicity of the MID1 pitch. I have a Duplex, PRO2, and this MID1. The MID1 feels good to me and is likely what I’ll use when I attempt my AT through hike in late ‘24. Yes, the MID1 has a certain aesthetic that I like.
@@KrizAkoni If you can get your hands on a X-MID Pro 1, a comparison video with the Hyperlite MID 1 would be awesome!
I like the fact that the Hyperlite only takes one pole to setup.
Looks well made but it's a hard buy imo... Looks huge packed compared to my xmid pro 1. In terms of space, did you try the plex solo ? I did own one before the xmid pro 1 and this Mid 1 looks like it has less space than the plex solo for some reason and it's quite a bit heavier.
Rolled up tighter, it’s about the same size as the PRO-2 (I can fit it in the same bag). The MID-1 bag is a little big IMHO, and it expands to fill the space. I’ve not used the plex series but hiked with people using them. They’re all very similar to me…nothing innovative like the PRO-1.
@@KrizAkoni okay it's still quite big for a 1p tente imo.
Yah I really like the X-Mid pro 1. The only thing I dislike is having to carry two poles but I can live with that.
great review, what is the name of the song in the background?
Asher Fulero by Forest Lullabye and Cyberpunk by Max Brhon.
@@KrizAkoni Sorry my bad, i mean the song at the end of the video.
Cyberpunk at the end 😎 It’s linked and credited in the description.
Thanks, looks amazing, very light,, only downside would be we can see through :/(
A lot of the ultralight tents made of this fabric are a little translucent. White a little more so than others.
Is there some net on the vents?
Yes, the vents are fully netted
Does the netting not go 360 degrees?
It does - complete bathtub perimeter and door netting.
Which country is the mid 1 made in??
Mexico
Has mosquito net all around tu tent?
The doors and the perimeter of the floor. It is a single wall tent, so not on the back and sides.
@@KrizAkoni thanks
Make sure to use those guidelines to give yourself extra head and foot room!
Yes! I did that regularly on the Duplex and have not set it up yet on this. For what it’s worth, the end panels are small and taught - the benefit won’t be nearly as large as on the Duplex.
Had one other comment. I’d let @rvahikergirl set up the tent while I play with my Merlin bird app. The birds were singing the new X-mid one song, I think 🧐
Not relevant to the review but absolutely terrible socks!
