Audiophile Electrician - Part 2 - Do You Really Need a Power Conditioner?

  • A lot of audiophiles worry about power delivery only when it applies to the last 6 feet via a power cord.
Some may use power conditioners with limited success. Others claim to be off the grid via batteries, but inverters in those devices add noise, can't power amps and often aren't isolating the gear from each other... among many other issues with batteries degrading and inconsistency.
Nevertheless, many find focusing on the last 6 feet worthwhile.
This video deals with power delivery on the other side of the wall where you could argue it's much more important... not just for performance... but for safety and reliability.
Nothing will guarantee an improvement since everybody's situation and gear is different. However there's a great case to be made for exploring things up to your breaker, dedicated lines and proper grounding to ensure optimal performance and safety before you even turn on gear.
In many cases, you can eliminate ground loops and noise that's easily audible and measureable, so I've brought you guys an audiophile electrician who looks at things beyond the minimum standards of electricians.
In part 2, we showcase where you SHOULD take measurements to determine whether you REALLY have a problem or not...then...CHOOSE the right option for addressing any issues. In many cases, just adding another dedicated line (or one to start) is all you will need to ensure optimal performance of your gear.

Yes! Great advice! I am set up with multiple dedicated circuits.
    Enjoying this “real world” video.

I couldn't agree more Jason I'm about to have 3 20 amp lines put into my room one for my components through my shinyanga Hydra 8 and 2 dedicated lines for my amplifiers.👍

You were very kind to respond to one of my comments by saying that because of the conversion the rectifier to DC it negates anything before that. I thought this was a good point. Of course lots of interference gets picked up along the way but the DC conversion seems to correct all this. So a lot of this revelation what's the value and doing all the electrical work upfront, forgetting about the ground loop issue which is a separate matter.

There's always potential for anything to impact your gear related to poor power.. Including noise... But it is largely dependent on the quality of the power supply and type of "poor" power.
Unfortunately, there's no universal solution or dogma that applies.

If you run more dedicated lines, you'll for sure get better results by running 10 gauge and fusing it for 20 amps. That extra size in the wire has the potential to increase the dynamics significantly.

So basically, dedicated line for amps and a dedicated line with a power conditioner for front end gear would be the way to go, AND it would be more cost effective than connecting the entire rig into multi-thousand dollar Power Regenerator which seems to be the thing to do for a lot of audiophiles.

I use 4 NRG Audioquest outlets. 4 dedicated 20 amp circuits at the breaker panel with own ground. 1 goes to each mono amp, 1 goes to the pre-amp, 1 goes to my niagara 3000 for items that are not high current such as Rossini CD transport, Rossini DAC, Separate master clock. Power is 10 gage copper romex from outlet to each breaker. I had tons of extra breaker room on my panel when I added. From personal experience a power conditioner seems to OVERDAMPEN the power amp and pre-amp. High end amps and pre-amps have excellent power supplies already built in so plugging into another conditioner can be restrictive. Since I direct connected above it is working amazing and have noticed a huge difference in overall performance.

Looks like I’m on the right track, just finished running 3x Oyaide EE/F-S 2.6 10 GA cables for my 2 channel .
Interested in your feedback between shunyata hydra and inacustic .

Is that a 10 gauge wire from the panel to the outlet? What is the impact of the 10 gauge wire? Noticeable? I'm thinking about doing new circuit and using 10 gauge. Not sure I understand oyaide
