    Great video DBA,
    I called Hormel Foods (the makers of SPAM) and asked them how long the shelf life is on canned SPAM. They told me it has a 3 year shelf life, and after that it will start to lose it's flavor, but will still be safe to eat beyound the 3 years. (providing the cans aren't damages , and there are no bulges in the cans).
    Enjoyed your video, thanks for "taking one for the team". 🤠

    Several items missing, peanut butter, drink mix and coffee.
    I like to add a few pieces of gum like Chicklets, but they don’t exist anymore so I use the Trident version.
    Also there was no fanny ribbon and based on your reaction to taste, if you do eat the entire meal you are going to miss it. It’s sad when you may need to supplement your MRE with Pepto.

    I bought a case of those just at the beginning of the pandemic because they were the only thing available at the time and I wanted to stock up a bit. I got them and they were already a year past the 3-year "Test/Inspect" date. They had been packed in 2016 and sold in 2020. I suspect that there were an absolute TON of these out there in a warehouse somewhere because they were $35 a case.
    You didn't get a fluke. Mine were packed exactly the same way with 2 packs of jelly, a tootsie roll, a pop tart, and a cracker. Every meal had exactly the same side items. They probably had a warehouse full of them and needed to make up calories cheaply, so they threw in 2 packs of jelly.
    The pop tart and the tootsie roll in a normal MRE is put into a mylar bag. These are in regular consumer grade packaging, and they get stale a lot faster.
    My case had a lot of duplicates. Fortunately I got a lot of Chili Mac, which I love. Unfortunately, some of the other mains were the unpopular vegetarian menu items.
    All in all, this case would have been a rip off if I had bought it at full price. I was not impressed at the incredible amount of sugar, the lack of good packaging, and the lack of menu variety.

    I run into that a couple of times, if its on sale be wary, the best solution to low sodium is to find low sodium items for your homemade MRE's, problem is sodium is a preservative staple. I am so glad that I found your channel, because nothing beats reasonable priced MRE's that you dictate what is in them, though in an emergency, eating is a priority even if it tastes bad unless it tastes spoiled, thing is as things go stale they also will start losing any nutritional value.

    The remedy for low-sodium food is.....salt. Or better yet, I use garlic salt. Salt and pepper are a must in my homemade MREs. Also, small bottles of good hot sauce are a boost to most meals.

    "Going off" of MREs is why I came to your channel. I was a big MRE fan until a recent fishing trip when I lived on them. Never again. They're little more than sacks of salt and sugar - okay for young soldiers burning thousands of calories a day, perhaps. But not for an older man with the usual age-related issues. I'll be making up my own from now on, thanks to you.

    The MRE you have is the ones they make for the civilian market and they all come with 2 packs of jelly. The place I get them from she gets the boxes new straight from the company and they're better fresh and occasionally their might be a strike bar or a pound cake in them. I also find that the filling in the main meal are very samey it's just the pasta that's different . I pay $8 a pop for them and I just keep them handy for road trips etc. again good video mate 👍

    They did not forget the peanut butter. PB contains high amounts of salt so one does not include it to reduce overall sodium in the meal. This lets one get away with a bit more salt in the main.

    Bad example. MREs will last a long time. Problem you probably experienced is before you purchase that case it was probably not kept in optimal conditions. It was probably kept in a hot warehouse damp area somewhere that’s going to help fast track the spoilage of it. Otherwise I’ve eaten MRIs over 30 years old that were absolutely delicious.

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  3 місяці тому

      The problem is there are very few sources that can verify the way MREs were stored. If you buy them fresh from the manufacturer and store them yourself that’s great, otherwise it’s a big risk to eat old MREs.

  • @seanwhalen772
    @seanwhalen772 4 місяці тому

    The lack of peanut butter is not a mistake. None of the low sodium MRE's include it. Best to just get the regular ones and get value for your money, as the reduced sodium are a bit thin and don't have the number of items a regular MRE has. Compare them side by side and you will see, no drinks and no walking snack. Your own homemade MRE's are better than the factory sweepings this company calls a low sodium MRE.

    That is not a military MRE. That is purely civilian/ disaster relief food rations.

    That’s not a military mre correct? Seems like a civilian mre, no drink mix all that. I’ve had the sampako before their pretty nasty 😂

      I have a beverage idea for ya…not something you can get at the grocery store. You may have seen the adds for HANX coffee (if not just google). Anyway, the Tom’s morning blend in the green package is pretty good. Not the cheapest, but it’s good with a good shelf life.

    Low sodium? We have low sodium products because our normal food has too much sodium in it. MRE's are for when you don't have normal food access, so you probably need that sodium now. This whole product idea is for a market that doesn't exist.

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  3 місяці тому

      These are meant for a civilian or humanitarian ration so if you have folks with HBP they would need a low sodium option. Some people can’t handle a lot of sodium even in an emergency.
