  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... I had never played a Mesa Recto before, but it turns out that it's not all about the heavy stuff....I had no clue that there was this smooth fuzz lead tone hiding in there! Any tips for other tones you can dial in with a Dual Rectifier?

One of the greatest amps ever made. And in the Fractals, the sound is just glorious. If you know how to tweak it. Tone wise, drop the MV, increase the output volume, and drop the Bass. Then tweak the Gain as you like. The trick to getting amazing tones out of the Mesas is the MV. Your tone is very bassy mostly because of your MV setting. If you drop that and increase the Gain you'll get the more traditional heavy tones most people know. As you drop the MV, you'll also notice the Bass response completely changes. Within the Fractal, I also mess with the output tone sliders. You can really shape the tone with those. Beautiful tone and playing as usual, brother!

Mesa amps deserve their status as legendary tone machines. I just don’t like carrying them...

Rectifiers are awesome sounding Amps. I like that type of lead tone as well. I like the dynamic way they respond to picking and how powerful they sound. I hope you get a chance to explore the clean tones.

I’ve used them for 20 yrs, i have two in rotation, matched with a Mesa 2x12. I use this for EVERYTHING live ( except outdoor when i go nuts with a 4x12), loaded with el34’s which inmho offer more tone options than the usual 6l6’s. I get every sound imaginable from this set up. The clean channel takes pedals sooo well and gives you many options via pedals, for example i have a Moller T Rex overdrive for country and jangly or biting clean sounds, and also a Boss Harmoniser with a Revv Distortion for bigger rock sounds. The Harmoniser likes dirt before it not after - the secret to using this pedal! The two drive channels are set up for ac/dc style drive and full on head melt respectively. I can do any gig with this amp, and cover any style from smooth jazz to Slipknot and beyond. Just delay in the parallel loop and chorus and Wah out front - I’ve found the best tone this way. Matched with certain guitars etc, in my case with alnico EMG’s to cut out rf noise in dodgy venues - i’m in heaven every night.
But a lot of people dont realise how versatile the Dual Recs are, like most tone, you just need to spend time finding your mojo with it, all amps are the same. Also volume is not an issue they perform extremely well at lower volumes as high, although obviously theres a point where maybe an acoustic guitar may have been a better option 🤣- which is my solution when someone rings and says “ it’s a quiet gig” - its an acoustic night so! Long comment sorry, but hope it helps……….

It reminds me of and seems a slightly reminiscent tone of EJ's sound on the song Gem. Love that tone, smooth and not overly fuzzy.

I couldn't believe it myself the first time I played one and now the rectoverb is the only tube amp I own now. The clean is amazing and with the EQ it can cover a bunch of different "clean" tones, the pushed clean is one of my favorites and of course the vintage and modern OD channels cover Marshally goodness to the rectifier sound, and it has a 2 channel spring reverb. I don't play in a metal band but do at home so I never even considered one but after trying it I was beyond surprised.

The rectifiers are so versatile. I generally prefer them to the Mark series. One of my favorite all time amps is the Rectoverb 25 combo. The clean and pushed cleans sounds are really really lovely.

awesome thought, works good on my dual rect. Never thought i'd be able to pull of Eric Johnson stuff on a recto without additional drive pedals.

That Mesa rectifier sound (I have a triple), especially when using the tube rectification and lower gain settings in the higher gain channels with single coils, is really close to the fuzz face tone I get with my fuzz face into a 5E3.

Honestly, if you really sit and take the time with this amp without any pedals…..you will discover some of the most incredible tones you’ve ever heard. There is nothing quite like a Mesa Rectifier. These amps are absolute Legend! By the way…your playing is excellent.

Please stop Jonathan!!! Your gear videos are driving up used amp prices!! I looked for a Bogner alchemist combo or head and they are NOT cheap anymore 😂😂 And now I can just forget about owning any Single Dual, or Triple Rectifier amp in any configuration with this video 😁🤣😅 But seriously brother, please please keep being awesome and send me your lessons page or rates becuz I absolutely love your phrasing and note choice, and your medium speed controlled shreddy bits are just killer man 💯! Great video brother thank you!

Would set my series 1 rectoverb similar to this with an overdrive in front to clear up the bottom a bit. Very Eric Johnsonish kind of tones can be gotten from some of the rectifiers. Roadkings, Tremoverb, Roadster, & series 1 Rectoverb tend to be warmer/less aggressively voiced and are great for this kind of tone. Not surprising considering the very smooth tone John Petrucci got from the Road King.

👍 for the Rectoverb. On the 10-watt setting the sag is a beaut.

I have some fantastic tones from my ‘reborn’ rectifier using CH1 in pushed mode with tube rectifier selected on spongy setting. Worth a shot with the Road King as that has so many switches and knobs to tinker with.

I think you can read in the manual that after 12h the sound becomes fuzzy and you need to be aware of that to tame it. You did it in a very interesting way!

Definitely hear the Satch in your playing, tasteful without copying like SRV copycats, I always considered Satch kinda metal boogie meets melody madness, love it.

The secret to that sound is if you turn the treble all the way off it pushes the mids, rectifiers are very strange amps to dial

I have a Mark 2b and there is a boost switch which I never used because...well..it always sounded like a fuzz pedal. I'm going to have to back and explore that with those tone settings. The exact opposite of what I normally use by the way.

It’s a great foundation for the Holdsworthian lower mid lead growl. Like many, I was drawn to pre gain eq IIc+ yellow tones, but the rectifiers do a thing for sure.

    • @thehumblepundit9790

One of the reasons I didn't gel with the HX Stomp was that I found the high gain tones really lacking. Especially with the Mesa models. You want amazing Mesa tones? Get a Fractal FM3. They'll blow you away.
