      Maybe, if you are a big Macallan fan or you’re into collecting all the single malts. If you’re looking for best taste go with Arran 18 or Glenallachie or a Millstone Oloroso. Kavalan Oloroso Sherry Oak is also great and half the price.

    Mark, interesting remarks on the Mac 18. I've always wondered about the newer bottles. My store was selling them for $209, then $229, now $249..I've asked a few customers how it tastes and apparently they like it. After your review, I think I would pass on the purchase. Nice that you have an 1989 & 1990 bottle, I'm jealous. I have a 1995, still unopened. Great review.

    Nice review, Mark - while I do like the Macallan 18, the price (nearly $300 where I live) has got to the point where alternatives are worth buying instead. For instance, $170 buys the Glendronach 18 which is (IMO) just as good.

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  5 років тому

      Hi Frank! Thanks for the comment. Exactly my point! And I personally think Glendronach 18 is a superior product all considered. Let’s hope they ramp up their efforts for the wave of quality seeking young drinkers starting to get into whisky.

    This expression is good, but the price differential between this and the 15 year is too large to make me pay the extra dollars. The only reason to buy the 18 is as an investment. It's $280 where I live, and given its upward pricing over the recent years, I wouldn't be shocked to see the 18 year climb nearer the $500 price point before too long.

    Hi Mark -- I haven't bought one of these since late 90s /early 00s. Quality went down/price up ever since Suntory and the Highland Distilleries, and then of course Edrington. We used to get it for USD$50-60 in mid 90s and bought it A LOT. And it was way, way darker, with yearly vintages. Anyhoo, my boycott is weakening and I was planning on/thinking about buying a bottle for the first time in ages tomorrow, at USD$230 plus about $15 tax. The 12 is $55-60. So great timing on the review. Maybe some other day.

      Hi Walter! Thanks for the comment - I started buying the last moment prices were ok around 2010! I hate to be a little negative....it’s not my style- but I honestly felt ripped off after paying exactly what you quoted. Four times the price...something seems terribly wrong. Let’s hope their sales figures tell them prices need to match...they can change more but that much more? Woe is me...

    I agree it's not a good value. You can get an Allardice and Parliament for the same price as 1 Mac 18. Both are better imo. I did recently have the 2016 Mac 18 side by side vs the Rare Cask and I thought the Mac 18 was hands down better. I think your tasting notes were spot on but I also get that orange note as well. Good review. Even though this is an amazing scotch, it is not worth over 200 bucks. I get the 12 year for 50 bucks. The 18 is certainly not worth 4 times more than the 12. However, at 150 bucks I would buy this. At current price no way. For anyone who loves the flavor profile, go get yourself a bottle of glengoyne 18 or glendronach 18. Both are easily as good and a lot less in price.

    Hi Mark. How's it going?
    As you might remember, because of religious restrictions, I will not drink any whisky matured in sherry or any wine casks (unless the casks contained kosher wine of course). Consequently, I tend to skip all the reviews which are presenting sherried whiskies.
    However, I am currently writing an article for an Orthodox Rabbinical journal on the subject of Whisky Sherry Bombs and the flavours which are transferred from the previous contents of the cask. So I started "dafka" (a Hebrew word meaning something like "ironically doing the exact opposite of what is nomally done"), watching loads of reviews on sherry bombs!!!
    What I found was fascinating. There are very few reviewers who take the trouble to describe the different flavour notes of the whisky. Almost all of them say "ah yes, this is very heavily sherried", or "sherry notes"....without explainin what these sherry notes are!
    You my friend are different. I don't think I have heard you once say in your reviews that it tastes like sherry! You go the extra mile and describe these flavours, such as in this video. Well Done! I really apreciate it!.
    One of the problems with reviewers who review sherry bombs is their total lack of experience with sherry. Perhaps the only type they have ever drank in their lives is the sweet liquour sherries many of you drink around this period called "Cream Sherries" which contain a lot of added sugar.
    After conversing with some, it seems as if many mistakenly assume that the casks previousy contained sweet sherry! The problem is that there are almost NO whiskies which are matured in casks whose previous contents were cream sweet sherries, so when they say "it tastes like sherry", they might well be describing a sweet cream sherry taste and *conflating* two different flavour sources, the dry sherry with something else which is sweet. So, the reviews which simply say "Ah Sherry" are of no value to me at all, and I suspect of little value to anyone else who really wants to get a feeling of the whisky's flavour.
    Many other reviewers taste dry fruits ("dry" which describes their process, not their taste which is sweet) like prunes, dates, figs as welll as dark fruits and exclaim that the whisky is sweet, even though the flavours from whence they came is dry sherry!" I have this theory that even though the sherry influence is dry, people associate dry fruit and dark fruits with being sweet, so their brains registers "sweet"!. I have notices that you do not fall into that trap and do describe these dark fruits and nevertheless, tell us that the whisky is dry! Again, I am very impressed and apreciate your diligent and conscientious reviews.
    Thank you again.

      Hi Reb, all’s well here, and I hope the same for you!
      Thanks for the big compliment and an epic one at that. Interestingly that video is doing well even though it’s ‘old’ already.
      As I read your comments I was in agreement in many respects, realizing that you are right, perhaps sherry is the most misunderstood- “sherry sweetness’ doesn’t help anyone in decision making. Another word I try to avoid is ‘oak’ but it creeps in there due to lack of descriptors. The more I eat and drink, the better my ability to make tasting notes relatable.
      Funny, my first experience with Macallan was disorienting - I had a cold at the time and wondered if the bottle was bad. When the cold subsided I could finally enjoy this new sub category of whisky. My first malts were Islay in my 20’s - I didn’t buy any until 2010 or so when I bought my first Glenmorangie. So I never really had any sherry bombs until one day in 2015 when I found a gift set of Mac 12 with a real glencairn( most sets in Korea now have facsimiles or outright fakes of the Glencairn whisky glass)
      Now that I am starting a new career back in Canada, I am hoping the income and more flexible schedule allows for more regularity with WhiskyWhistle. I also have to improve my tech set up ( and of course my delivery which needs polishing)by summer 2019, at which point I will start having guests on. If you’re game, ou’ll be on the list of people if we can work out a time that suits.
      Anyway to close, Reb, thanks for the continued support. Few have been as regular, so big cheers to you, my friend

    Great review! Couldn’t agree more, way over priced. I don’t even bother trying anything from Macallan these days as quality went down and prices went way up. Glenfarclas, Glengoyne, Glendronach all offer much better value in sherry whisky, though they are starting to get too expensive also. Glendronach 15 was the best value out there but unfortunately it’s mostly gone. Grab that one if you ever come across a bottle.

      Michael Manganiello hi thanks for the comment. If the price is right, it’s good! You’re right, 2014 was the last ‘vintage year’ - 1996. If you can find them at regular price or even slightly more you’d do well getting one. If you find any from the early 90’s or late 80’s for 300-500 they’ll do well at auction, or be unforgettable drams for a special event. If you can’t get the current Mac 18’s at a good price the Editions are very well made. There’s also Classic Cut Which I just got - very nice.

    "there is a little bit of peat in Macallan" What no?! They are all 100% unpeated.

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  3 роки тому

      Not all. Peated malt is used at the distillery for occasional releases for example Rare Cask Black. As for my verbiage, rather than saying I detected peat, detecting phenolic ppm would have been better phrasing. I wished to give you a link that includes ppm of malt used at most distilleries but I could not find it. Macallan sits at around 2-3ppm. That will be simply from the fermentation process plus possibly effects from maltsters (Simpsons Malt) which are proprietary as likely Macallan is one of their biggest customers. After trying so many Macallans I kept getting a very light whiff of peat - some none at all and others more prominent - old fine oak 15 comes to mind - which led me down the rabbit hole.

    Nine months ago, you asked viewers if they should buy this MaCallan 18. Sadly, this sherry cask 18 is no longer being produced. Yes, you can still buy an 18, however, is aged in a sherry "seasoned" cask which isn't the same. Same for the old 12 year old which is disappearing from the shelves to be replaced by the seasoned cask version. I am afraid to say this, but I believe it's the end of an era. Get the old stuff while you can!

    All the aura around a Macallan 18, so I bought for $290. Won’t open it until I secure a second bottle, hard to get

    It's worth the money when a naive cashier at the corner liquor store sells you a pint of it for $39, because she thought there was no way someone would charge $120 for a pint of liquid. So, I have to tell you, knowing that I barely paid anything for it, and the inherit palatal beauty within the bottle, it became the only whisky I've ever deemed good enough to not finish, in order to save for a special occasion. Find a way to replicate my scenario, and you'll love this dram.

      WhiskyWhistle it’s in my lovely town of Marquette, MI, on the south shore of Lake Superior. They have a pretty decent scotch selection for such a tiny space.

    PS: I could not tell the difference between 2017 or 2016. haven't had the new one and likely will not except at a bar and who knows what they stick in those open bottles, probably the 12 lol.

    I could have bought this from my local whisky shop however it was £220 which is $388 Canadian dollars. Way out of my price range. I can get good quality sherried whiskies for around £50. I even thought the macallan gold was pretty decent.

    • @WhiskyWhistle

      Hi Gary! Exactly there are good and even better sherried drams including Macallan for less. Edition no 2 comes to mind.

      The Sienna is worth a try. It's a NAS but some old whisky in it. I liked it but I think Macallan are in the process of scraping it.

    The Macallan 18 year is overpriced it's 430$ in canada it should be about 325$..The Macallan 15 year is a much better deal at 200$ canadian even 2 Macallan 15s is 30$ less than one 18

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  3 роки тому

      Good points Chris! That shows you the reality. The 18’s are used as a monetary instrument to a high degree whereas the 15 is used less so. I can respect that Macallan may buy better wood, but I don’t think the price of 12 should be double that of Glenlivet for example. It should be 10-15 percent more at most. The 18 should also be no more than 1.2-1.3 times as expensive as other major 18’s. And where it used to be readily available, now it is highly restricted. Makes you think....

    Wow Mark, that didn't sound like a very good one. It's well known that the quality went down after 1995. I finished a very tasty 1995 a short time ago and I have a 1994 bottle stashed away for a rainy day which I got for a good price at auction a while back. It simply isn't worth it any more. It is no better than many 18 year old whiskys between £75-100 a bottle.

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  6 років тому +1

      WT I mean is good - better than the 12 but wow the Edition 2 is better at half the price...good job on the stash - I bet those are incredible. I want to try Tamdhu- I think that and Glengoyne will satisfy my need for older sherry cask whisky!!
      Thanks my friend🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

      @@welshtoro3256 glengoyne is better and a fraction of the price. I just got a glengoyne 25 for 360cad, which is less than a mac 18 and is totally on another level.

    I purchased a Macallan 18 years sherry oak 2016 release for $290 and would like to compare with old Macallan.
    In you opinion, is Macallan 18 years 1997 worth for $640?
    I'm not really familiar with sherry oak casks, would glendronac 18 or glengoyne 18 more worth the taste?

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  3 роки тому +1

      Hi ZOA2533, did you try the Mac 2016 yet?
      From the standpoint of drinkability, the Glendronach 18 is tops among these three. The price should be better as well.
      If you are looking for “investment grade” whisky Macallan 18 1997 is worth buying and holding. Shop around, though. Of course money is no object and you want to try the 1997 then go for it!

      Thank you for your kind replay. Since I only purchased 1 bottle of Macallan 18 yrs 2016, I haven't open the bottle yet.
      Macallan brand...... I only tried Edition No. 3, I think it cost me $130 back than. The Vanilla taste is so strong, that's all I remember about that the edition No.3.
      For investment, Macallan Edition 1~6 should be a good product, I'm not sure it was worth the price for wine tasting.

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  2 роки тому

      Thanks for commenting. Like any interest, there are different approaches depending on one’s interest level. At least, as it is uncommon for Western people, take time to enjoy the smells of the drink. Not rushing your drink is also key. No big sips like beer but rather small sips like bad medicine. Only nerd out if it ceases just being just your drink and becomes your pastime.

      Hi Shawn I can understand your feelings! Try adjusting the volume per sip ( even an eye dropper can be a good place to start) and/or the dilution - some people find 25% ideal fro their palates! You might be a “super taster” with more taste buds than most people. Maybe that’s your calling!
      I wonder what jet fuel tastes like 🤔
