Great video, and lots of fascinating details about the way society's attitude to widespread schooling has changed. Another factor in the rise of state-funded schooling, in my understanding, is that as the Industrial Revolution transformed the way people worked, and drove urbanisation and regulated work-hours, there was a growing need for childcare, especially among the poorest groups, where both parents often had to work. I'd be interested to know how those pressures interacted with the factors you discussed.
Even around the beginning of the 20th century, it was quite common for children to leave school at about the age of 12. Boys were often apprenticed about that age.
Hey good to know about the "normal" word. My aunt in Guadalajara, 🇲🇽 is a school teacher there. She went to the school named "la normal (the normal)" to get training. I assumed the word normal was the name of the school. Now I know thanks to mr beat.
My grandpa always talks about how his dad only went to high school because he was too small for the farm. He went to the same private school that I did, but his tuition was a sack of potatoes!
There is a town - small city - in Illinois called "Normal". Not because it is a normal town, but because it was the home of Illinois State Normal College, now Illinois State University (Go Redbirds!).
I’m fine with free education being paid through taxes. Yes taxes suck but the benefits are bigger than the negatives by a long shot. I think college should also be like other education. Paid through taxes so we can eliminate student debt. But that’s my opinion. (Tho wish it was that way)
I' m pretty sure we have to go to school is because of the Printing Press made by Gutenberg. Gutenberg was the first person to add capitals and periods at the first and end of sentences. Because of the Printing Press, Leonardo Da Vinci was able to learn about Philosophy, Science, and math, (so did others like Isaac Newton, Nicholas Copernicus, and many other historical figures). (But ultimately, it was Horace Mann's Fault!)
Although I think the title is pretty boring, it's pretty interesting. Industrialization and mechanization mean there doesn't need to be a bunch of uneducated people tending them, resulting in the rise of more common and public education to become more powerful. In America, I still think the education system could be much better though because we have the money to do so and we don't need a bunch of low-wage laborers.

I am 27 and I am still mad that I had to go to school. One of the reasons I don’t want kids is because I do not want for them to have to endure having to go to school.
I think we learn a lot socially and less factually. Some girls in my class learn they are amazing, mich better than they think they are. Me and a few others have learned: we aren’t skinny enough. Our skirts aren’t short enough. Hair too long, too short. We are bigots who deserve to walk the halls with signs like loser, and idiot, floating above our heads. We deserve no love, when we go to the dances and parties, we will never be complimented, because our hips aren’t wide enough, yet our waists aren’t thin enough. Teachers won’t care or help you unless your parents are known to donate a lot. This is what I’ve learned, all thanks to school.
