The Italian etymology is a little misleading, as it says nothing of the true history of US presidential cabinets. Even though the US Constitution makes no mention of it, cabinet government was already an established practice within the Westminster system (since the 1600s, and going back further in various forms); because having a cabinet of advisors had served British Prime Ministers so well since the 1720s, it was later adopted by US presidents with a similar advisory function. In the UK, the cabinet has traditionally been more formal than it is in the US context, being held more frequently and taking the form of a board meeting, where items on an agreed agenda are discussed and voted on to become government policy. The various secretaries of departments are then expected to hold to the government line on these policies, whether they agree with them privately or not (collective responsibility).
Sorry to "actually" you, but the Department of War was only in charge of the Army and was renamed the Department of the Army underneath the Department of Defense when the latter was created, alongside the Department of the Navy (which includes the Marines) and the new Department of the Air Force. It's a very common misconception (I'm guessing because the names are similar) that Defense replaced War. A similar popular misconception is that the Air Force was known only as the Air Corps while it was a part of the Army, but it was known as the Army Air Forces from 1941 until 1947.
However, the SecDef did inherit the seniority of the Sec'y of War, so that he or she is 5 heartbeats away from the Presidency. Normally it depends on the date of establishment of the department, oldest department first.
The term "cabinet" is also used in parliamentary democracies. The difference is that they are all elected members of parliament of the governing party or parties. They are formally called "ministers" and the head minister is naturally called the "prime minister".
When people from countries that have multiple parties say the parties have to "form a government" post election, it really confused me for the longest time. I thought that every election they rewrote the constitution or something. But i think it refers to that country's "cabinet". Who gets to be in charge of what. That's how I understand it anyway
@@tomrogue13 That's how it works, yes. It just means that the largest party gets to have the top job, but they have to share their cabinet with other parties. Imagine if Joe Biden needed Republicans (or members of other parties) in his cabinet and you'll get the idea.
