Cette pièce est juste magnifique, les chansons sont belles, l’histoire est touchante mais surtout: cela décrit littéralement ce qu’il se passe actuellement, c’est une pièce en avance sur son temps, il y a tout: les inégalités, le désarroi de la classe populaire amenant de la violence, la récupération politique de ce désarroi, terrorisme et excès sécuritaire, une classe politique toujours plus aveugle et violente, dépression et anxiété générale, mondialisation qui a rendu notre monde fade, critique du show business, place de l’homosexualité etc j’en passe et des meilleurs. C’est tellement touchant
Oui. Et le naziland n'est pas comme je le pensais à l'époque un simple parti, mais bien ce qui gouverne ce monde depuis si longtemps, sous couvert de "démocraties" et de belles devises, ce sont les marionnettistes qui sont derrière les pions politiues.

C'est la version que j'ai connue en premier, 1988, qui passait sur la 5, ça sera toujours celle qui restera pour moi. Un chef d'œuvre immense.
Merci à ma maman de m'avoir fait découvrir ce spectacle musical dotée de magnifiques et de pures voix sans artifices. J'avais 9 ans quand elle m'a fait écouter cette merveille, j'en ai 24 aujourd'hui et je ne m'en lasse toujours pas 🫠 les frissons et les émotions que je peux ressentir sont justes indescriptibles... Je ferai découvrir ce pur chef d'œuvre a mes enfants ça c'est sûr !

Была сдвоенная пластинка - 2 диска в одной обложке, заслушанная до дыр... И , к счастью, нашлись тогда турбонаушники, которые давали ощущение, что я в зале сижу...

К сожалению, Мишель Берже умер в далеком 92 году, и английская версия так и не покорила Бродвей, как он мечтал. Но шедевр остался с нами на века. А актеры как-будто там и живут, только оболочки стареют отдельно.

Well, having tried for several days, I have now managed to restore the sound missing in this copy. Although I have a little French, the subtitles are a great help. Thanks for your efforts in getting this copy onto UA-cam. Why it was screwed up, translated to English and called Tycoon I will never understand!

saw this two days ago in strasbourg! it was incredibly. i am a student studying in france but im from new york and have seen dozens of broadway shows. this show was INCREDIBLE by broadway standards too. never seen lighting like that. it was so good

I saw this show Sept.1980 in Montréal.(Different cast except for Martine Saint-Clair, Crystal) I was 17. Well, I'm done. I can't work anymore today. I'm too shooked right now. This show back then was life changing for me.
My Canadian French teacher introduced this to us in high school...I was around the same age. Stella Spotlight has always spoken to me for some reason. I've heard Ronnie Spectors' version of Les Adieux...it doesn't have the same spark.
I was thrilled to visit the Place des Arts when I was in Montréal because I knew that Starmania had been performed there.

La traduction est tres bien faite. Bravo et merci de nous redonner Starmania, plus que jamais d'actualite. J'ai eu la chance de voir le spectacle en 1990 (Renaud Hantson chantait Johnny Rockfort et il etait excellent) et cela reste un de mes plus grands souvenirs. Soiree exceptionnelle et oeuvre immortelle! Merci de m'avoir donne l'opportunite de la revivre une fois de plus.

I wonder if Tim Rice's lyrics were written in anticipation of a major rewrite of the show - they changed so much, apparently reassigning some songs to different characters, implying events that don't appear in the show, completely rewriting Banlieue Nord into a scathing commentary on the natures of the romances in the show... or if he just didn't understand the plot and made it up as he went along.

As a french native speaker, regarding the subtitles provided for the first song of Nadia, I am quite shocked by the translation of "travesti" (transvestite) by the f*** word..I don't entirely agree with such translation but I am no expert.
Agreed, that reads like an automatic translation that wasn't proofchecked.

@@thear1s A good point. If anybody did produce vulgarity, though, I would suggest it would be Sadia. Incidentally, I'm not a native speaker. I have a degree that says I'm fluent: it lies through its teeth.

"Travesti", "Transvestite" or "transdresser" would probably be the best fit but it wouldn't work today because the LGBTQ vocabulary has evolved in 40 years. If the song was written today, Sadia would probably use the word "Queer" or be a trans woman. It's my least favorite song of Starmania together with the song of Stella Spotlight.

Yes she (he) is a transvestite but always played by a woman. And you are correct, in 1978, it was a rock dancer and in 88 they change it to rock drummer to showcase the drum solo
It seems they've changed this because the artist that plays Ziggy in this version is a great drummer. He got a prize at the conservatory for drum playing
Yes, actually Sadia was supposed to be played by a man. However, it was said in an interview they picked a woman who played a "strong woman" because that was the kind of vibe they wanted for Sadia. Men kept playing the character as a "weak man" during the casting. It became a tradition and a lot of people forgot Sadia is supposed to be a man.

That would be Renaud Hantson (ua-cam.com/users/RenaudHantson), originally he is the founder, drummer, backsinger, and then singer of a french Heavy Metal band known as Satan Jokers. Here he played Ziggy, but for the last year of the show he played the main character Johnny Rockfort which was the one he actually wanted to play in the first place.

good catch re: Sunset Boulevard. I think I thought they were parodying it rather than referencing it directly, thus my translation.
As a (cis) lesbian, I consulted with a group of my queer Starmania fandom friends including people who are both trans and nb/gnc to come up with a translation for Sadia's use of the word "travesti" that 1. makes sense given what we know about Sadia's character and 2. isn't a literal slur. I'm very happy with "genderfuck" as a solution that doesn't apply an assumption to her character that isn't backed up by the text and casting. If the viewer thinks word "fuck" is offensive (as a previous commenter once said) I maintain that that preserves the original intent of the song a lot better than using an outdated, confusing term that is now considered a slur.
