It kinda hurts seeing Spring Hill mall slowly die. This was my childhood mall and I have so many memories in it. All current and former parts of the mall I have at least one memory in it: From my mom taking me and my sister to subway in the former food court some Fridays, getting my first pair of Jordan shoes from Champs sports, my dad taking me and my sister on Sundays and going to the arcade and always playing this terminator game with dad and playing this zombie game with me sister all the time(When I went to the arcade the arcade was where the current Sbarrios is), getting sick from eating to much ice cream from basket robbins, getting locked in with my dad when I was like 5(The mall closed before around 8-9 I believe and my bed time was around 7 so I remember barely being awake and it being very late, but we were able to leave, a security guard helped us out), my family and I going to the Sears photo studio and shopping at Sears, getting lost in Carson’s when I was little, but a nice women who was in the elevator with us that same day recognized me(didn’t know me) and took me to the customer service and was able to described how my mom and sister looked and they were able to find them, years later I still remember that lady and I will always remember her kind act. Writing letters to Santa at Macy’s when I was a kid and being excited to go into Macy’s because as a kid I thought Macy’s was a super high-end department store. The Spring Hill mall has seen better days.

I remember when this mall opened in 1980. Everyone was excited. Finally big time shopping in the area. No more road trips to Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. Left the area years ago. Sad to see this mall is on its last legs. Had positive memories of it.

They used to have a great food court with this place that specialized in making fried potato skillets, it was so good. This mall was doing well until JCPenney closed. That was the beginning of the end, even with the renovation. It felt like a slow decline that gradually sped up over the last 10 years. I think the Algonquin Commons opening is what led to Spring Hill's demise similar to how the Geneva Commons led to Charlestowne Mall going under.

Thanks for doing this. As the mall of my childhood, this is the one I can't film until the very end. I agree with your comment on the anchor stores causing the issue. It all started when Penney's closed, they had no reason to leave a mall that was practically at full capacity with all anchors operating. The Spring Hill store was their "store of the future" and avant garde for the time. Things went downhill from then. It would be devastating to see either the Macy's or Sears buildings get demolished. This Macy's is the last of its kind still standing since the demo of Stratford Square. Since this was a Homart Mall, the Sears got extra features and a unique design. The trapezoidal theme is prominent all over that building.

So many memories. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in cville. 0-19. Spring Hill was a very go to place for my family and myself when I was a teen. I remember trick or treating to all the stores as a yearly ritual . Center court had Halloween costume contest. My chorus from school regularly sang in center court for Christmas. I loved the arcade . Also another favorite was Disney store. The food court was great. So sad it is so quiet now.

Wow, Victoria's Secret is gone. That's not a good sign. Kohan owning this mall isn't a good sign either. Too bad. This is such a good looking mall. This one is on my watch list, as well as Stratford which I did a few days ago. Hopefully this will continue to cater to a core group of people. I would hate to see the fountains turned off. I think Kohls will eventually close looking at what happened with Charlestowne when Geneva Commons was built almost 20 years ago and having Kohls on Randall as well. Also don't forget there is also the Arboretum not too far away that probably pulled some stores out of Spring Hill as well. Probably about 6 months from now I will do an update video of this mall. Looking sad. Good video.

I worked at the Elgin Sears store from 1975 thru 1980 at which time we moved to Sears Spring Hill. I worked in Div 1, furniture sales until 1992 when they eliminated the department and took a buy out after 17 years with Sears. Saw the mall open on day 1 (we had flag raising ceremonies etc) and sad to see it close now.

Great and excellent video of Spring Hill Mall!!! 🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️ I live in Elgin since 1987 and I married my husband in 199 and my 30 year old twin son's were born in 1991 we all moved to the Rockford, Illinois area 15 years ago in 2007 so we go to Cherryvale Mall not all of the time but once in a while. When my twin son's were little we were here all of the time the 4 of us as a family and sometimes to o at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois. I haven't been to Spring Hill Mall since 2011 but I want to take my twin son that lives in the Rockford area with me to visit this summer since his twin brother his in the us army and his married and I have a 2 year old grandson living on base in Fort Polk, Louisiana but they're going to be moving to Korea in September. I told my son I would like to see visit Spring Hill Mall and Woodfield Mall because I remember all of the great and fun memories we had at the mall even before I married my husband and had a family I was at the mall 4 times a week. I'm 57 years old and I love exploring dead and abandoned malls through here on UA-cam and you're spot on now that the original food court is gone it's nothing and it never will be but I'm glad and hope it's being well kept and I'm glad it's still doing good but I hope it never comes to the unthinkable and that's why I want to visit before anytime the mall happens to go under quickly. 🤔🤔🤔

Well bud, now you got to go film the closing Sears at Woodfield. The last Sears department store to close in the midwest. After November 14, Sears will have no more open department stores at malls they built eitherl--and Sears/Homart built lots of them.

🟦⬜ It has so many childhood and teenage memories for my generation of Elginites. The whole mall was packed with people and every slot was filled with a shop of some kind. It was the 80's & 90's, no one had cellphones, and Randall Road was cornfields... ⬜🟦

Glad you mentioned the crappy access to the Cinema, it seems like when they built it that they plan on the mall not being there soon as they didn't make access from inside the mall. Nice video, sad to see what happened to this mall. Lots of good memories from my youth. I hope that they can repurpose the area as like you have said, was kinda a hub for the community.

Young lady, this was the place to see and be seen. It was jumping when there was close to 100% occupancy. My first wife worked in two different stores there, somewhat overlapping her employment at both for a short time. At the time, with the decline of Downtown Elgin, this was mallrat central.

This video inspired a visit as this place has many fond memories. It still looks well kept, the fountains are still on, and while it is nowhere near its peak there was a decent number of people there. Even a massage place I got a massage at years ago was still there. I bought something for my mom from this very pretty Japanese shop. Might be worth a visit from those who also commented here.

sad to see its decline, I was really hopeful that the theater would help improve things as they announced plans for outward stuff as well that never materialized and they opened a Pablo's that lasted all of four months. It seems to me that once Carson's closed they all but stopped trying and threw in the towel and the whole covid situation just sped the demise even further. Also looking back I believe another factor was back in the mid 2000s or so the mall had a run of gang incidents that got a lot of bad press around here and I think that was one of the things that helped set its decline in motion
