It’s beautiful how in Spring Hills final hour so many people were instead celebrating its life, and enjoying it! So cool how it was so full in the end

Yeah it was really cool! A lot of malls don't get the same treatment at the end.

This is the 5th time we've both been in the same place at the same time shooting. I'm the one in the rust-colored sweater walking around with one of the mall plaques tucked under my arm. I'm pretty sure I even talked to you at the 1991 board while you got your picture of it. Crazy. As always, well done.

I was one of those kids that popped up for the funeral, Genuinely one of the saddest and most beautiful send offs I’ve been apart off. I’ve been going to the mall since I was like 10, with my friends fooling around and watching movies. So now that the mall has been close down officially, it feels sad yet relieving to know that there were people that cared about a place!

The funeral was a great idea! The mall was special to a lot of people and it was a well deserved sendoff.

It's so weird that here (Illinois), where it's cold for a majority of the year we have a couple outdoor malls that are "successful", yet these indoor ones are mostly dying out. Yes there are other factors, but still blows my mind that people love walking around Old Orchard in the freezing cold rather than an indoor place.

    • @LostDepartments

Yeah it's baffling sometimes. Our weather though is getting warmer though, like we had a week of polar vortex and otherwise winter has been a letdown.

Welcome back! Its a mixed feeling basically, seeing the mall close earlier than most dead malls but also feeling good about what's to come even sooner. I love that you were able to capture this mall once more like many other of the great creators here on UA-cam, and it felt like your Macy's and Sears closing videos on this place were yesterday lmao. I also love the urbanist take you have on the place and are so passionate about it, I do hope to see more mall updates on places like Stratford Square sometime soon before they close! 😄

    • @LostDepartments
      @LostDepartments  10 місяців тому +1

Thanks!!! It's amazing how fast time has flew by over the last few years. I'm also glad to hear someone caught onto my urbanism takes, I've been trying to incorporate more of that into my recent videos.

I don’t know, but the memorial service for the mall gave me the feels. Couple of tears were shed. I have no idea that this place even existed until I saw your video; but I can see how much it meant to all of you and I’m sorry for your loss and I hope that it’s redeveloped into something Useful and beneficial for your community. I appreciate you sharing your memories and I look forward to seeing your videos.

Man I miss going to this mall and how this mall was from the early mid 2010s and same with woodfield mall for the entire 2010s except the store I mostly miss is Sears because Sears was part of my childhood and it’s always a great store to visit in the mall no matter what

I live literally 6 minutes from this mall and im extremely sad because I never got to say goodbye to the mall. I used to always go to the macys store with my grandma and my mom used to always take me to sears to look at the appliances. RIP Spring Hill (1980-2024)

Never understood why shoppers would rather go to the Algonquin Commons when it's an outdoor mall. The Chicago suburbs are cold for about 5-6 months out of the year (sometimes 7) I would much rather be indoors at Spring Hill Mall. When Barnes and Noble left the writing was on the wall.

While spring hill wasn't as pivotal to my youth, it still has some places to me. I used to go there with my grandparents who lived down the road. My grandfather's 80th was at the OCB. I remember going to a birthday party at Aladdin's Castle on a bad weather night with green skies. I got my ear pierced there. Sad that three of the four malls I most frequented are all closed now

E-commerce has hurt a lot of brick and mortar stores. IMO the reason why Algonquin Commons hurt Spring Hill Mall is shoppers could pull up in front of the store they want to shop at instead of parking in a big parking lot and walk half way through a mall to shop at the one store they want to shop at. Then carry their purchase back through the mall and parking lot. The grass field in front of the theater was where JC Penny was at before they tore it down. It also didn’t help the mall when Sears and Macy’s closed as the commentator said in the video.

Crazy. I remember waiting outside the Sears on one of the first days the mall opened in 1980 - I was 5 years old and in Kindergarten. Can't say it was ever my favorite place to go but I did acquire most of my music collection at the Musicland which I think was right outside the Carson's - first on cassette and later CD, at least until the Best Buy opened up down the road. Kind of hard to believe it's completely empty now.

Signal Hill and Spring Hill are good examples of not being cared for til the end (Signal Hill) and being cared for til the end (Spring Hill).
One being really moldy with non-working/being used HVAC and a working fountain (which at the last few videos for that mall, was just making the interior humid and extremely moldy [I wondered how the jewelry store at the corner of the ground zero of mold corridor was continuing to run]) and the other being maintained til being closed and going out mold and water damage free (for the walkable area).

Dragon Buffet left shortly after the mall closed and Kohls just announced it will be closing its doors this year.
So soon only the theater will remain.

What a great mall this once was. It wasn't Woodfield or Stratford Square, but it was really neat. Hell, the Barnes and Noble alone made me want to come to this mall. I think 2007 or so was it's peak, especially when Best Buy was still open across the street. But I remember the food court being huge and really awesome, and then they had to close it off which I feel was the first step backwards for this mall. At the very least we still have some cool stores further down the street in Dundee, but it isn't the same. The moved Barnes and Noble isn't as good either.
Man...what do the Chicago suburbs need to do to bring malls back? I don't buy the whole "online shopping killed malls". Good malls still exist, Hell Woodfield just keeps growing with no stop in sight. Its just such a shame to see such a staple of many of our childhoods fade away.

Wow, so sad to see this mall go, yeah, the mall would worsen as retailers have moved out to either new locations in Algonquin or Woodfield Mall becoming a nearly dead and rundown mall. Childhood memories going to this mall back in the late 2000s (as I first went here in 2006)-late 2010s. I did shot a photo of the Disney Store at Spring Hill Mall before it's closure in April of 2010 (as it used the 1990s pink and green design, later it became Famous Footwear, and finally, Victoria's Secret and Pink before it closed in the late 2010s) using a Nintendo DSi camera (my earliest own camera before I got a Nintendo 3DS in 2011 and an iPhone in 2015).

Sad to see, the Chicago area will be losing at least one more mall this year, possibly two. Stratford square (closes April 14th or 15th) then it seems that redevelopment is planned for golf mill shopping center, to be completed by next year sometime they say.

Makes me wonder if a lot of these anchor stores freaked out, when gift card buying went out-of-store or on-line, and assumed that that deficit in sales was from loss of customers for actual store merchandise? When the anchors run off the smaller stores usual die too. Wouldn't it be awful that this whole 'Mall Fall' was a stupid Mass Executive Mistake? Maybe, they should hire fewer expert CEOs and promote more in-house staff who actually know the business?
