- Osprey Talon 33 Review - The Osprey Talon 33 backpack is a fantastic pack for day hikes, fast packing, or even bike packing. Osprey has thought of everything for the Talon 33, which is why I think it is the best day pack for me. The Talon has enough space to be versatile for different seasons but is light enough to not slow you down on shorter hikes or when you want to move quickly. For hydration, the Talon 33 can handle a 3 liter hydration bladder as well as a fat 32 ounce Nalgene or a tall skinny bottle like the 1L smart water bottle. It is extremely comfortable with the Airscape back panel, suspended mesh, fully adjustable fit, and solid waist belt. The Talon 33 also has plenty of storage with the one main compartment as well as zipper pockets on the brain, large stretchy mesh pockets, and water bottle pockets on the side. This is the pack I use most often because it works for short day hikes, all day treks, as well as quick overnighters. I love the Talon 33!

Thanks Martin! Those UD packs seem NICE! I'm hoping that fastpacking goes well this summer and then maybe I can get a dedicated fastpacking pack. The one thing this one doesn't have that I would REALLY like for fastpacking, spots for soft flasks on the shoulder straps. Thanks for watching!

@@DoseofDirt Anytime. For what it’s worth I think this model of the Talon 33 is way better than the new one after trying both. You can’t really compress the new one down much. On the flip side I prefer the new Aether Plus 70 over the 70 AG. It’s a dream pack feature wise.

I have the Osprey Talon 22 that I carry everyday to work. Awesome pack. I got the Exos 38 for a day pack and my wife will carry my Talon 22. I got the Exos 38 recently for $99 from Osprey and couldn’t pass it up. I also have the Aether 60 ag and its my go to pack for large loads. Excellent video!!! I really like the Talon packs.

Very helpful review! I’m looking for a pack for a trip overseas to try to get by with just a carry on and to be manageable for daily carry as we move about. This looks like a good unit.
Did you land on anything? I'm headed over seas in a few days and my go to bag broke😭
@@markg3305 my wife and I each took a farpoint/fairview 40 bag from osprey. One is the men’s and the other is women’s. We also took daypacks that hook on conveniently to the outside of the main pack. Mine is a Gregory nano 18. Hers is an osprey daylight cinch 15. It was a perfect combo for each of us. Managed 2 weeks in Japan and wouldn’t have done it any other way. Look up reviews on the farpoint. The harness zips away with a cover. It’s exactly carry on dimensions and looks smaller that those big rolly bags. United didnt give us any trouble at all.
Osprey’s talon series is one of my favorites. I have the 22, 33 & 44. I do not like the changes they made to the back pad on the 2021 models tho. Have you seen them?
Yes, this is probably my favorite pack I've owned! I haven't seen the changes for the newest models, but sounds like they might be going the wrong direction! I may have to snag the previous model of the 44 and 22 while they are on closeout!

I've got the Gregory Zulu 35. It's very similar to the talon in most of the general features. One major difference is how the gregory seems to have copied the Osprey AG style for the back of the back...that touches your back. The back is mesh and sits a few inches off the body of the pack helping prevent that back sweat...or at least offering some pass through if you catch a breeze, you can turn into the breeze and let it cool down your back without taking ot off. The side pouches are really easy to open and close and hold a decent amount of stuff.
Gregory has their brand of hydrating bladders (3d hydro)...their main claim is that it has a purposefully flat side so it fits in the hydration pockets easier, and ease of cleaning...
Hrm, on that note would you mind making a tips and tricks for water bladders? I have one, I've used it maybe 10 times but it still imparts a...plastic(?) Flavor to the water...are there better tubes to use? Ways to condition the set up to reduce that flavor? OR is that just the name of the game with using that system? Mostly I just bring 3 or more liter bottles and re use them again and again so I can convince myself I'm not killing the planet with plastic bottles
Hey Evan! I know that Gregory makes a solid pack as well! I have been eying a few of their packs recently. Like you, I've just started using 1L bottles for the most part because the bladder just ends up being more work to take care of, has that plasticy taste, and It's harder for me to gauge how much I'm drinking. I have heard that some lemon juice in the bladder can help get rid of the plasticy taste, but haven't tried that yet since I've converted to using mostly bottles.
The gregory bladder sounds interesting because one think I don't like about them is how they bulge into your back when they are in your pack. Maybe I'll check it out! Thanks man!

I don’t understand when people say things like this. My pack is the same whether I’m going for an overnighter or four days and anything in between. If it’s good enough for an overnighter then it’s good enough for an extended backpacking trip.
@@SophisticatedDogCat my apologies if I tripped your trigger bud. I tend to carry a lot more food is all on longer trips and I don't generally bring a water filter or things like rain gear or any other things worth risking on an overnight vs. a 5 day trip.It's is usually bulky enough to merit a bigger pack.
@@SophisticatedDogCat I guess it depends on the conditions you are going into. I know for me this pack could work for a quick overnighter if I’m going solo in the summer. But if I’m taking my dogs, or kids, or it’s winter then I’m hauling a lot more gear and so there is no way I would be taking this pack. I think food also becomes a factor (and water if you don’t have a water source during your trip). So, it’s all about the conditions, company, and calories when deciding which pack I need to use. Could be anywhere from this 33l to my 70l aether. But agreed that if you are summer camping solo, not going far and have reliable water the entire way, the difference in gear between one night and three isn’t massive.
@@BackpackingwithBuckley Agreed! A lot more unpredictability on a longer trip, so have to bring more gear to be prepared (or maybe you don't HAVE to, but I choose to). Lots of reasons why a smaller pack will work for one trip but not for others. I just used a 44 liter pack on a day hike, which would usually be total overkill, but I had to pack a wetsuit, repelling gear, and 5 extra liters of water!
Thanks for the review! I am in the market for a new day pack. One question I had is would you recommend this for trail running as well? I tend to do short dayhikes and trail runs but would like to start carrying my camera and a couple lenses (nothing too crazy). I was between this model and the osprey duro 15 which is trail running specific.
Hey Jon! I will say that I have taken this trail running a few times to see if it would work for fast packing. I loaded it down with about 10 lbs of stuff and ran about 8 miles. It definitely has a bounce to it. I tried to dial in the fit as I was going, but no matter what I did it seemed to bounce a little. It wasn't too bad, but would probably get annoying on longer outings. If the Duro would fit your camera gear you may want to go for that since it is probably constructed better to avoid bounce. Or if you have a store close to you that might have them in stock, you could take your gear into the store, load up the pack, and then trot around the store.

It's handy cause if he's on trail early enough, he can just scoop some of that dew off the grass and put it in the can, a special alchemy happens where the can turns it an unnatural green and carbonates it. No need to look it up, you've read it on the internet, it is now a truth!

Did you find the lower lumbar support put pressure on your spine at all? i tried one out at the store it waas a M/L when i should be a S/M so maybe thats why
Hey Mattie! I haven't noticed that at all, but one thing I've learned is that every body is a little different so different packs work for different backs (I swear I just came up with that and feel like a genius for it). I tried talking my brother into an Osprey for months. But we went to an REI so he could try a bunch on and Gregory packs just worked better for him, so that's what he got!
Also, I was surprised when I eventually measured my Torso that I usually fall in the medium or even s/m range (torso is about 19 inches). I'm 6 ft about usually around 200, so I'm large on everything I buy. But I've found that buying packs that are actually in that 19 inch torso range does make a big difference in how they fit!
does it have attachments for an ice pick?
A few days ago I went to a travel store in my area that has the TALON 33. After a long time of searching, I measured the bag with a weight of 7 kilos and 5 kilos and checked that it fit me perfectly, but unfortunately its back system is not comfortable for me ):
did you end up taking this bike packing, and how did it fair?
Unfortunately I have not been able to try out bikepacking yet. BUT I have worn it several times while riding my mountain bike either just for a long ride with extra gear or for a recent adventure race (I wore this pack for all 3 legs). I can tell you that the fit is nice and I like having room for a 3 liter bladder. And I know it would fit at least my summer gear (packs down smaller) so I think it would work well. But haven't tried it specifically for bike packing yet.
What about the Talon pro 30? What's your opinion on that model?
I haven't been able to get my hands on a Talon Pro 30, but have been looking at them online. I like some of the changes that they have made but can't tell how I would feel about some of the others like the brain. I may have to head in to REI to get a closer look. @@DoseofDirt Thanks for the quick reply mate! I also feel that the material is a bit better but the absense of brain makes me doubt wether is better or not. As you pointed out when you don't have as much stuff in your pack you can just pull the staps and make it feel smaller.

It’s funny you mention the material, because even the first time I saw the pro online I though ‘ that material looks NICE’! I would really like to try the pro out so am going to try to track one down for a good deal (may be tough tho! 🤣)
@@DoseofDirt Yeah the material an the colour combination caught my eye from the first photo i saw. I still think that the brain is much more practical and i am doubting it is worth the price difference. Especially now that the Talon 33L price will fall cause of the new model.
Just ordered an Osprey Talon pro 28 (women’s version) Ascent Outdoors for $164. I, too love them men’s color, however, I am a petite female whop needs the fit of the women’s pack. Wish I could have gotten away with the men’s one for the color.🤣 but can’t beat the price. I like it so far for……

One thing you didn't mention. The brain is not adjustable. So if you fill the pack to its max (it has an extendable main compartment} then you cannot use the brain. Not much point of having an extendable inner if you cannot keep it covered. I think osprey messed up there.
