This woman just doesn't play fair. She never ceases to amaze us. There's so much comfort, love, passion, and dedication in her voice and the way she sings. Simply beautiful 💓

The Adam Blackstone version stretched her out, put her more in that pocket, and allowed the song to BREATHE... with less overkill riffing. It flowed with a more lush full vibration. Man I can get enough it! This was the perfect match...Adam Blackstone's genius musical acumen with Jazzmine's timeless voice. This version was so unified and perfect!
It’s wild how advanced she was back then (and even younger) and how she has just continued to grow and come into her own. She is absolutely breathtaking and some of her choices are insane!!!
You can’t comprehend how excited I was to come across this video-- and how shocked I am that I hadn’t seen it before! I’ve been following your content for a little under a year now, but this particular video I hadn’t seen. I’ve literally been FORCING everybody that’ll listen to hear both versions of these as I give an analysis to the difference in both stylistic choices and growth in technical ability. Talking folks’ ears off. This made my day.
I would love for Jazmine to record a studio version of Seal's "Kiss From a Rose." there used to be a video on YT from a specific performance of hers in London that was incredible--I'm glad I ripped it before it got taken down. love these comparison videos!
Yes!!! That song came to my mind too. I listened to it regularly when I found it years ago. It was a live show and It is sooooooo good soooooo good 😩🙌🏽.
I enjoy watching your vocal analyses. I knew you were going to do an analysis of this song when I heard it. Jazmine’s voice is classic and new at the same time. I played her original cover so much. That one was more neo-soul. I really enjoyed this new version because it’s more straight up jazz. I keep replaying it. With all the amazing vocal embellishments she does I still get a story and the emotion of the lyrics. Jazmine makes me see pictures when she sings. I see her in a smoky supper club, a drink in her hand, with a jazz band. She and Mr. Adam Blackstone did their thing.
The older one seems to lean towards Soul and R&B, where the new version leans toward jazz and blues. Tons to appreciate in both versions. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for doing this one! This really makes me want to hear an entire jazz arranged album from Jazmine. I bet she could so some beautiful things with a Cassandra Wilson song
Now to my GUHLLL Jaz...her voice..I have no words..just pure emotion in the depths of my soul EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear her sing...the acrobats she does with those notes...the depth and range (deepness)...I never tire hearing her and for this version of Ella's song...man..Ella's wonderful exquisite voice...OUCH! YESSS..but Jazmine version...makes me wish it was raining right now..nighttime rain and stare out my window and listen to it all nite..and wonder
Shes always giving Kim burrell and Stevie Wonders Golden vocal child but I def like her more evolved version because of the nuances and the maturity of her interpretation. The older version gave limited range but more gospel (kim burrell) this version gives more jazz inflected interpretation. She was a prodigy now that has really mastered her instrument
Wow! I remember watching the older video on repeat back in 2008! I found myself singing it with the video even after all these years. Thank you for taking us into this 🤓. The jazziness ✨💫✨💪🏾.. I love that you’re comparing them. ☺️ ♥️ thank you for this video.
MAN OH MAN!!!! This brought soooo much joy to me. Hearing both versions was a very special treat. I have never heard the 2006 version. I like both but the 2nd version definitely displays a maturity and growth within her voice as well as the total song is definitely jazz. Her voice is always butter. The second version with the musical arrangement is fire.. 😍 the scatting of the 1st version. Mr. Legrair your voice is🔥!!!
I love that she’s heavily influenced by Kim Burrell. I think her creativity with her voice is out of this world. I can go to sleep to this, I can hangout at a lounge spot listening to this, I just LOVE this song man… wow! Also Jaron I love the comparison idea!
First things first, sir, you betta siiiiiiiing! Yesssss. You always give us a little taste but you showed out! Anyway, love both versions. Love how acoustic and raspy the older version is. Love how free she sounds in the new version.
It’s amazing how someone already so skilled can improve even more. Way cleaner, even handled those high notes better. Her voice has always been fire, I’ve loved her since I first heard her 2005ish. Just got to see her in concert this year. Forever a fan!
Love both versions, glad to see her singing 'Round Midnight' and getting mainstream recognition and a Grammy nomination. Would love to see a reaction to Cecile Mclorin Salvant.
The growth and maturity in her, always amazing, voice & tone, and her approach to phrasing and movement. Thanks for this one Jaron. Keep sharing, educating, inspiring, and encouraging us. #Jaritones
This 2022 version is actually giving me Billie Holiday rasp and undertones, how Billie is behind the groove... the way she sings, "Lately I find..." then catches the rhythm again. She's tapped, fully, into her genuis.
Omg!! Super awesome vocals!! I have chills . Side note, I can totally hear Faith Evans singing this as well. Sir, thanks so much for sharing this with us #JaronTones
I remember my first time hearing her version of round midnight (it was in 2004, I was at Troy U & it was a live recording from a concert she did in UK) & I recall thinking it was Kim B. But was so surprised to find that it was the “little big girl” from kindred family soul…. I was a fan & self proclaimed promoter of hers since. Thank U for doing this video…. Took me back to the dorm days with my poetry core
Jazmine Sullivan is amazing. She has gained a life long fan. I used to listen to her music, but now I really consider her to be an amazing artists. I'm so glad she is getting her flowers now. I love hearing the maturity and growth she has had. Please keep reviewing this great vocalist of today's generation.

Jasmine Sullivan’s version is stunning….everything she touches….she spins into gold. I have listened to Sarah Vaughan’s Round Midnight and Bobby McFerrin’s Grammy award winning version of Round Midnight for over 30 years….just so sublime, inspiring, tantalizing and incredibly beautiful. He was inspired by Keith Jarret’s The Kohl Concerts and wanted to improvise like that vocally. Wonderful inspired film about the crème of the crop of black jazz musicians the 1986, Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Male, "Round Midnight" from the soundtrack album Round Midnight. Round Midnight is a 1986 musical drama film directed by Bertrand Tavernier and written by Tavernier and David Rayfiel. It stars Dexter Gordon, François Cluzet and Herbie Hancock, the latter of whom also composed the film's soundtrack. Martin Scorsese, Philippe Noiret and Wayne Shorter appear in cameos. The protagonist jazzman, Dale Turner, was based on a composite of real-life jazz legends Lester Young (tenor sax) and Bud Powell (piano). While the film is fictionalized, it is drawn directly from the memoir/biography Dance of the Infidels written by French author Francis Paudras, who had befriended Powell during his Paris expatriate days and on whom the character Francis was based. The film is a wistful and tragic portrait that captures the Paris jazz scene of the 1950s. Gordon was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and won a Grammy for the film's soundtrack entitled The Other Side of Round Midnight in the category for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Soloist. Hancock won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. The soundtrack was released in two parts: Round Midnight and The Other Side of Round Midnight.
Ledisi has a great version from her her album "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue", which was released almost 20 years ago. The entire album is incredible.
