Sonic The Hedgehog CD is looked at as either being one of the best in the franchise, or the most overrated. It's full of great ideas with some untapped potential and flooded with many road blocks. Personally I'm curious if Sonic 2 was put on a Compact Disc if it would have a re-orchestrated soundtrack.
Pros: Special stages are quite fun, Super Peel out is a nice new move, Quartz Quadrant and Stardust Speedway are fun paced enjoyable levels, the time traveling mechanic can give you four different levels in one.
Cons: Finding the generators can come off as backtracking, a lot of the levels don't have that Sonic flow to them, Bosses are WAY to pathetic, Spindash needs to be fully charged before it works, not much of a level design difference between good and bad futures,Wacky Workbench.
Personal Faults: audio differences at times. - Ігри
The music is just in JP and USA so advanced for it's time.
Bad animation? Are you kidding me? That animation was AWESOME back in 1993 and I still love it to this day. It perfectly portrayed Sonic's sense of speed, agility, and determination (IMO). I didn't say the soundtrack was bad, I said I didn't care for it.
I played this game so much i can go to the past, find robot generator, complete the level in all stages in less than 5 min each
Ugh, this game is so underrated! Every single modern review of it is the same thing: "sanic cd is overated, it suks!". What happened with all its fans?Sonic CD is just another one of those games that is cool to hate. Kinda like OoT
As another game with alternate level states, what's your thoughts on Yooka Laylee And The Imposssible Lair?
@hawawa675 Luigi's Mansion won't be uploaded to my channel, it's a Push-Start Exclusive. Sonic CD was always going to be the next one to be uploaded, the votes were for which one I would work on after that.
Wacky Workbench=rage quit.
+SonicMaster Sword Christian Whitehead was developing on a new final boss for sonic cd. It was practically indestructible unleass you went to the past and damaged it there. To get to it you need all of the time stones. However when it was released as the hd version it was scraped
I ADORE the song "Sonic Boom" from this game. It compares to Live and Learn and the songs from 06!
and when you put "did that spring really need to be there?" at 04:35 then i'm pretty sure that it's purpose was to be as an obstacle for doing a time attack on that level
@hackensac During the pre- final battle cutscene
M.Tails:Eggman! But how?
C.Eggman:He had a little help.
C.Tails:Dr.Robotnik!
C.Eggman:No one calls me THAT anymore.
1:54 That's not the case. The reason why Amy Rose was called Princess Sally in US Sega CD Manual. Is becasue, Sega wants to tie the game in with the Sonic Saturday Morning TV Series and the Archie Sonic Comics.
"I'm outta here!" "No, Sonic, wait..." *Sonic jumps down* "TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!!"
Wait, he goes to Little Planet...
What´s next Little Big Planet?
LOL, I would love to see Robotnik capture all the creative stuff, and then Sonic and Sackboy team up!
In a tv's basic options, you can switch the aspect ratio to 4:3. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
Actually, the final boss is aweful. 4 hits and he's dead. That's it.
I totally agree with wacky workbench, I thought the developers tried to put to much in the stage as possible and over-did it. That aside, have you tried the Christain Whitehead version of the games?
Finally, someone gets it!
Darkness the curse also thinks this game is overrated.
Yeah it's better, but it's still not one of my favorite soundtracks in the series.
i think the reason you are taking down ufo's in the special stage is because the ufo's kinda look like the generators
@danibazan14 No I'm pretty sure I brought that up, you'll have to listen again.
When stage themes are taken for rip offs...
Now I feel cheeped out collecting all seven time stones AND destroying the generators.
I do like the Sonic CD US soundtracks but all I want to find is the name of the band who played these soundtracks. Why because the Collector's Edition was missing three music tracks that I really wanted to listen too. Especially when they have the complete music tracks. If I knew the name of The Collision Chaos Good Future and the Metallic Madness Present and Good Future I maybe able to complete the album. If You know the names and where they came from help me! I do not know the names of the music tracks and where they came from.
Spencer Nilsen composed the US soundtrack and Gene Fujimori did the JP one
I honestly didn't find the metal sonic boss cheap. In fact, I actually like it because it is the only boss in a 2d sonic game with fast paced action. I was actually able to make it through that fight without taking a hit, and I have the achievement to prove it.
@DSDMovies Music is a matter of opinion based on a persons own taste. If you like it fine since I don't take off of points if I like the music or not.
8:09 "Oh, and how about those bosses? They range from annoying to terrible, and normally give you invincibility and shield before the fight."
Exhibit A: ua-cam.com/video/QrVuTE2n2Q8/v-deo.html
Only in the download that came out last year which was not covered in this review.
you forgot to mention. if you destroy the badnik creator and go to the future in a level. you will go to good future instead of the bad future.
@TheAirShooter I accepted your friend request just recently but that won't let you see those reviews. Those reviews are going to be remade and redone to make them not suck.
Only in the Updated Rerelease on Xbox Live, PSN, and App Store.
The original SEGA CD and PC versions (Sonic Gems Collection uses the PC version) do not have Tails as playable.
Tails is an unlockable character in the 360 and iOS version of Sonic CD by beating the game once.
@cjszero01 What do you mean "overflooded"? There are more Day stages than Night stages! They are shorter but still!
@starfoxrocks1 yeah, though I thought the day time levels of unleashed and Generations were pretty good.
Tails is playable... In the mobile version. And you have to beat the game to unlock him. He can fly, just like in Sonic 2, but he can't do the UP+A move that Sonic can do.
The remake isn't mobile-exclusive, it's also on PC and consoles.
Have to you tried out the PSN/XBLA version? It has some improved physics, BOTH SOUNDTRACKS!, and tails!
Yes trust the book that also says that Amy name is Princess Sally.
@cjszero01 Honestly, I'm a sucker for "atmosphere." I really liked the level background designs ESPECIALLY the ones for the Special Stages, plus the music for both shores is pretty good in my opinion. Nice review though! Earned yourself a subscriber.
Got this game for my phone and you can play as tails with it and switch t the US or Japan soundtrack whenever you want! :D
just wondering which pokemon was evolving behind sonic 2?
I think that was Diglett.
@protopie1 It's an old review but I've done one for the Wind Waker, look in my playlist.
I dunno, personally Sonic CD is my favorite Sonic game and it's a shame it gets so much hate today. The US soundtrack in my opinion is my favorite soundtrack of any Sonic game ever, and the Japanese soundtrack isn't much worse. The entire time travel mechanic is really awesome and makes the game much longer than Sonic 1 and gives it a ton of replay value. The game will seem bad to you if all you care about is getting through the level as fast as possible, but for people who like a bit more exploration it's an amazing game.
Man, This Review Is So Much Better Than Mine.
@hackensac Generations of course.
Not a bad game, just not as good as the genesis ones.
No, it would appear in Smarch... lousy Smarch weather.
By the way, that little planet looks pretty big... XD LITTLE BIG PLANET REFERENCE! AREN'T I SUBTLE!?
All in all thought... Cjszero made a good review! *Level clear music plays*
Actually it's supposed to be like the Genesis games just with time traveling mechanics.
I just played Sonic CD on an emulator just a few minutes ago before I came onto UA-cam to see you have done a review on it. All I can say is, I agree 100%, Sonic CD just didn't have that Sonic feel to it and made me want to stop playing it after a few minutes.
I don't like this game, but Wacky Workbench is underrated. The platforming in that zone is actually pretty fun.
@hackensac Even Robotnik says he doesn't go by that name anymore. I do like "Sonic Boom".
@GamingworId No worries.
Cjzero . Since you played sonic cd, did
You see the creepy secret message
In the game
What was up with Robotnik's Evil Santa Laugh?
I owned this on PC with the big white box. I own it on 360 arcade years later where I finally managed to perfect the game. Its not bad, overrated? Maybe? To me, its a spinoff, and a decent one. And yes, Stardust Speedway 3 is very cheap. I got every achievement on the 360 version but not getting hit once in the Metal Sonic race is brutal, just brutal.
Wow, really? I had no problem doing that when I was 12.
You hate backtracking? So...no Metroid? *Goes to check out the rest of your channel* This is my second video of yours, I like your style.
why are there rings in walls in sonic cd?
@Zark132 Nope, Compact Disc.
I wish they would make a remake of Sonic CD That would bring back many fans!
i just hope they leave the creepiness at the original. if i hear robotniks laugh one more time...
Why I loved that it made him sound evil?
hey cj i thought that you were reviewing pokemon next, luigi mansion wasnt even one of the games we could vote for i dont think
i played my self. palmtree panic=emerald without excitment. star dust speed way=hard wacky workbench=rage quit last level=me:throws controller at tv*
Sorry but I don't have a standard definition TV anymore.
I heard that "Majin" is just the nickname of one of the developers.
Interesting review. I still have never played Sonic CD, but I too keep hearing about its greatness.
To be fair, I don't mind backtracking... but backtracking with a time-limit? That you just don't do... -_-
@ProkoLokor it's overflooded in the wii version
You don't like the Japanese soundtrack? That was the one that came out in Europe 1st.
fun fact: Sonic CD is the BEST game to play while on shrooms. i replayed palm tree panic for like 2 hours, best time of my life
No, I never did that code.
@SuperGarfieldJordan1 Then just ingore her instead of replaying to her comment.
Hey Cj, I hear the PSN and XBOX Live Arcade version of this game is more refined than the original, have you played it?
this might be a very late response, but i have and it does get a few tweaks, but mostly at the beginning. the biggest difference is probably that you can switch between Japanese and american soundtracks, although the ending is always like the US version (i did get a laugh and a plain "try again" when finishing the game)
I've been wanting to try this game but getting it or finding it for a system that I actually have is a different story.
Now now, No need to say that. Someone may like it and enjoy the level, And that is his or her opinion.
This is pretty much how I feel about Sonic CD. I like it more than Sonic 1 though.
I understand the inovation of the classic sonic games at the time, but in my opinon I can not see what is so great about them, even though I enjoyed playing them.
Not sure if this is significant to your review but you should have brought up De-Bug mode and the subliminal message you get in the soundtest room if you type in the code 46, 12, 25
"fun is infinite Sega Industries Majin (japanese for demon)
Sonic CD was the only game i had of the Sonic series up till I bought Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Suffice to say the little kid in me was absolutely frustrated with this game, and the adult in me is much more pleased with doing the alternative objectives on top of beating the game. It's an okay Sonic game, definitely better than the games of the 3D dark ages, but it wasn't anywhere near as fun as the Adventure games to me.
What happens if you go to the future instead of the past?
you see the bad future.
+Carlos Henrique Unless you've already destroyed the robot generator
@SuperGarfieldJordan1 That's your opinion, not mine. I did not enjoy Sonic CD enough to give it a 5/5. I find it overrated.
the only real reason i like this game is because it introduced the most awesome and badass sonic characters ever METAL FUCKING SONIC
Ha he forgot about the ''Secret Soundtrack Scare''
I'm not saying the music is awful, my problem is that many of the tracks simply don't fit with the levels, leading to indifference from me (and others).
It really depends on the version. It gets a better score for the Japanese version, for the likes of the Special Stage. It loses a lot more marks for the bland North American version.
Also. a lot of the better music is for the bad future, which further asks the question; why would I have to time travel for the good ending?
"What? Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is Evolving"
Commiserations, it has devolved into the inferior Sonic The Hedgehog CD.
08:28
what do you think????
after all as much as I love Eggman
he is nothing compared to Dr Wily from Megaman
The only thing I disagree with you with is the boss fights. I thought they were amazing! Rather than just jumping on Eggman, each one was like a puzzle you had to figure out.
I'm suffering through it now on the X-Box 360. I don't think it's bad, but the difficulty makes the old Mega Man games look easy! It's so hard it's nearly unplayable.
"I grew up with pumpkin pie, and loved it. But don't like this pie. Why does this have to be apple pie!? Apples work well in salads but I don't think it works in pie. Why's apple pie everyone's favorite? Overrated I say! I give apple pie a 3/5."
This is how I saw this review. Don't get me wrong, He is entitled to his opinion, I'm cool with it ^_^ But I think we need to remember; This game is supposed to be a spin-off. It's not meant to have the same mechanics and gimmicks from the Genesis games.
the spin dash was fixed for the remake
Playing the genesis games kinda got repetative after a while. Sonic CD however has optional replaybility. I wasnt good at getting all the time gems, or had the patients for finding the generators, so I just beat the game normally. Months later the game got easier, so I tried for the gems. And then later all the generators. To be honest Sonic himself is the only constant in the series. The boss fights are different, the gimmicks are different and the levels are different (in structure that is).
actually theres a port of sonic CD on the PSN and Xbox Live along with mobile Devices it adds in tails fixes the colision Detection traveling to the past is easier and getting the time stones is easier to Because the framerate is super smooth and it fixes the spin-Dash and work like it Did in sonic 2 tails plays like he Did in sonic 3 & knuckles and you get access to Both US and Japanese soundtracks though the opening music in the opening and ending aren't like they were in the original
It's an enjoyable experience for those who can play it.
did you know there is actually 8 time stones
in xbox 360 once you beet the game you can play as tails
point well made. I see you enjoy a good amount of games you review
@starfoxrocks1 You're welcome.
Is it sad that I didn't know this game existed until you reviewed it? D: I thought Sonic CD was an animated movie or something... *feels stupid*
what do u think of the sonic cd 2011 version on XBLA and PSN? i think its MUCH better
Really? Every game? Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed was disappointing to me? F-Zero GX was disappointing to me? (I could keep going but I've made my point)
I never played the original but got it for my Sony Z1 and I totally agree with everything you said! I really hated this game, just didn't feel like a Sonic game even though I still have Sonic 1-3 on my Mega Drive!
If it's evolving, Y U NO PRESS B!?
The generator thing is really annoying to me. This is Sonic, not Metroid. I shouldn't have to backtrack!
@TMan13111 That's cool.
I had my issues with wacky workbench too, you're not alone and i can understand that you find it overrated. its your opinion and everything but i would give it a 4/5 i kinda liked the game and it can get pretty addictive at times (to me at least!) nice review. and i hope you are getting well from that cold
