  • In this tying video I demonstrate the steps to tie the emergent version of the Classified Caddis Pupa seen in my book, Catching Shadows. The process although relatively easy, comes up with a very buggy suggestive profile that the fish simply love.

Wow, you really dialed that in for being a simple and effective bug. All the "work" is done before hand. Yet you adhere to an established style or technique. What else do use those "bug" brushes on? Thanks Rich!

Joe Duca that pattern I devised over 15 years ago and it’s been consistently taking fish during caddis events. You could do some other interesting things with brushes made out of scud dub, which I will highlight again in the near future, one of which being a very simple scud pattern I demonstrated on my old Vimeo channel

@@RichStrolis you really think out of the box to solve a problem. I'm aware of thread color and the affect it has on the fuzzy dubbing - like Fran Betters' flies, but wire - wow! I've only watched a few of your videos but I'm learning a lot and connecting it to what I've read but never put into practice. Thank you! I was wondering if you're in Conn? I was watching a fishing show this morning and they were on the Farmington - beautiful river and gorgeous browns. The next show was striped bass off the rocks in some bay. (I almost got sea sick watching, HD is real!) They were "walking the dog" with huge muskie sized Zara Spooks. You ever fished either places? Thanks again.
PS Thanks for the heads up on Vimeo, I just spent the morning watching. To paraphrase Martin the Martian "now you've gone and made me happy". Are you familiar with Steven Bird, Soft Hackle Journal?

Joe Duca yes I am in Connecticut, I practically live on the Farmington and guided there for several years. I find myself spending less time there and more time all over more now than ever as the dynamic of today’s fisherman has changed and it doesn’t interest me. Once this pandemic is over I plan on guiding clients again but I’m in no hurry, enjoying my time on the water with my family and close friends and continuing to design more flies and begin writing more.
