This version compliments the original so well to me. Bo Burnham’s is like you’re trying to find something to hold on to, but you’re isolated from the rest of the world as you watch things unfolding. You’re becoming lost and you wish it wasn’t happening this way. Phoebe Bridgers’ version is like the aftermath, where you’ve become so distant from everything, that you’re floating away into outer space now. The ending has already happened. You’re sad to be surrendering, but also at peace knowing that it’s okay not to fight anymore.
I definitely agree, in both versions there's a sense of looking back at the point of no return. I feel Bo's is more of a 'in the moment' realisation that were too far gone, while Pheobe's version has a sense of calm and acceptance, like she already knew.
This is perfect. It's like Bo's version is the scene of the movie where the bad thing is just starting. This version is the version that plays in the credits after a tragic ending.
'A gift shop at the gun range, a mass shooting at the mall' Will always stand out to me as some of Bo's most cutting and succinct lyrics. It paints a full and devastating picture and criticizes in a few small words. Phoebe covered this beautifully.
personally i find "the whole world at your finger tips, the ocean at your door" to be very impact full. something about the juxtaposition between having access to all of human knowledge at once but not being able to stop the world from literally ending
I love the last verse, "Hey, what can you say, we were overdue". It's so terrifyingly upbeat, like a post-apocalyptic retrospective of what caused the apocalypse. For me it evokes images of someone singing folk songs around a campfire, with death and destruction all around them. Beautiful lyrics by Bo, and a stunning and faithful reprise by Phoebe
it's not just the lyrics though, the chords change a little bit at the end. Don't want to get into the specifics but the chord progression gives it what I called a "triumphant" feeling exactly in the "but it'll be over soon" by changing just one note in the scale

wouldn't work in public - at all. Bo is known for having no tolerance for people singing along during his shows, which would suck for phoebe bridgers fans who tend to sing along all together. idk, the two groups probably wouldn't mix.
"That unapparent summer air in early fall/the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all" is one of the most geut-wrenching lines I've ever heard. Bo managed to put a finger on the pulse of the anxiety we all feel, and Phoebe took it further with her cover.
I think the reason this cover is so powerful to me is because so much Millennial humour feels like it’s about half-engaging with this sense that something is deeply wrong, and this feels like that thing underneath bubbling up from beneath at long last? @@ShakaJams covering a song is meant to be an attempt at applying your own style, or improving upon it. This cover does neither. Takes a magnitude more talent to write a song like this than to learn it.
This version is so moving. I don't know why - it just brings me to tears. The original made me feel horrible dread and this one collapses me emotionally. I love it.
I won’t sell short my guy Bo Burnham, the original version of this song is incredible But this is also amazing. The 2 versions create very different pictures in my mind that are equally astonishing. Phoebe’s cover took a slower, more serious tone that really complemented the lyrics. Long story short, I’m adding both of them to my playlist
This whole cover is just perfect.. but the atmospheric buildup after the last chorus is truly something else. Phenomenal. I’d love to see Bo’s reaction to this outro hearing it for the first time.
This cover of Bo's song legit got me through an 11 year break up with my partner earlier this year. The words just resonated something fierce. Though this was a few months back now, I still listen to this song and cry....but now it's finally a positive experience full of reflection and appreciation for the future. Cheers
my house just got destroyed in hurricane helene. i just realized why I've been listening to this so much. "the world at your fingertips the ocean at your door"
Phoebe’s version is when all souls have just peacefully surrendered, now floating across the universe and letting go of all the physical that was binding them. It’s a sad moment, but just so freeing that you almost forget how it all happened. Truly one of the most special songs made and her cover is so utterly magical, like being engulfed by a huge wave and getting taken by the ocean🦋🌌🖤
Rewinding before the grim paralysis of "but it'll be over soon".... it's weird to hear the mental health parts now. "Googling 'derealization,' hating what you find" always hits among the hardest of the lines for me. It revisits the overwhelming, trapped feeling of recognizing something really bad is working its magic in my brain and not having been able to stop it so far. Hearing lines like that on the other side of medication, it's an echo of that feeling, a triggering thing I guess, but so far away now that the contrast is - breathtaking. And I'm awed and grateful at that. Still, memory of that trapped misery will always be one of the most visceral experiences I could ever revisit. And then the song goes on and it's a battle between facing a frightening melting wave of troubles and wanting to fight anyway.
I mean it's a little depressing that we didn't learn since then, but yeah, this is We Didn't Start the Fire after the anger wears off and the lack of progress becomes evident
@@grabble7605 The song itself, as in the lyrics and meaning, are depressing, but its role as this generation's "We Didn't Start the Fire" is not depressing.
Hadn't thought of this song in a bit, but it's 80 degrees on an October day in Seattle. That unapparent summer air in early fall, the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all.
I got really depressed over the summer, not just because of the pandemic but I was bitten by a poisonous spider and ended up in the hospital. Plus my dad got into a car accident and I didn't see him for months (I don't have a car). And then I listened to Inside. This particular song made me cry. I just felt like my quality of life was a peak low and this song really resonated with me.
Whoever is listening to this, you're not alone. It may feel like it several times, but I'm stronger whenever I remember you guys exist. We're together in this journey, always remember.
This is such a specific pull, but the last minute of Phoebe’s version reminds me so much of “Komm Susser Todd” from Evangelion. They both have this incredibly human way of interpreting the cacophony of apocalypse, these massive swells of noise against the background of people cheering and playing music. It’s haunting because of how real it feels. I love it, it’s so so so good
@@constructioncat4184 i'll always have a special place in my heart for the artist that try to figure out the lyrics/rhymes at 4am. Also Bo knocked it off the park, it's hard to top that performance (and the context it came in). Hey, what can you say? We were overdue
But it'll be over soon, you wait
Da-ra-ra, da-ra-ra, da-ra-ra-ra-ra-dum
Didn’t think we’d be here, but here we are again…
Whenever this part (6:01) comes up, all I can remember is Phoebe jumping and dancing while playing her guitar on stage. This makes me so happy😊
I GOT THE SAME FEELING WITH THIS HARD DRUMPS!!! What a feeling, thanks to share!! ✨
@@alejandrodiazgomez6333 She's so wonderful and cute with her skeleton suit!
Wow this was so unexpected. This is such a perfect cover it’s like the song is made for her style
The song highlights, in part, the incessant regurgitation stage we are at in Western Civilisation. This cover highlights the songs essence with irony.
I forgot this was written by Bo Burnham and totally bought that this was written by Phoebe.
@@ShakaJams covering a song is meant to be an attempt at applying your own style, or improving upon it. This cover does neither. Takes a magnitude more talent to write a song like this than to learn it.
I felt like from the beginning feeling this song reminded me of Sufjan Stevens and she reminds me of him so maybe that's why it works so well
@@albamustang9168 homie who hurt you 😂
This version is so moving. I don't know why - it just brings me to tears. The original made me feel horrible dread and this one collapses me emotionally. I love it.
we're gonna be okay. okay, we arent, but we will not be okay together.
giving me huge stranger in the alps vibes. almost as if it came from that album.
thank you for this. made my day better 💓
I won’t sell short my guy Bo Burnham, the original version of this song is incredible
But this is also amazing. The 2 versions create very different pictures in my mind that are equally astonishing. Phoebe’s cover took a slower, more serious tone that really complemented the lyrics.
Long story short, I’m adding both of them to my playlist
This whole cover is just perfect.. but the atmospheric buildup after the last chorus is
truly something else. Phenomenal.
I’d love to see Bo’s reaction to this outro hearing it for the first time.
He was there when she played it for the first time
This cover of Bo's song legit got me through an 11 year break up with my partner earlier this year. The words just resonated something fierce. Though this was a few months back now, I still listen to this song and cry....but now it's finally a positive experience full of reflection and appreciation for the future. Cheers
managed to make a great song even greater. amazing
"I wish I wrote it, but I didn't, so I learn the words."
bo and phoebe have inspired me so much 😭 this combination is just so perfect
my house just got destroyed in hurricane helene. i just realized why I've been listening to this so much. "the world at your fingertips the ocean at your door"
seeing this life after the year we’ve all had was….. probably the most emotional i’ve ever been at a show.
Wow, must have been quite the experience!
A year has passed since. Now it's even worse...
I love her melancholy tone, fits the song perfectly. This is one the the first songs I learned to play and sing...helped get me hooked! Love Bo ❤
my ears have been blessed. You sound like an angel phoebe
This is the happiest day for me, a diehard fan of both Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham
Here once again.
this is so beautiful, we need more phoebe and bo!
Song/cover of the year. The live performance (Philly) was magical-it was the most I've felt connected to people since sometime before the pandemic
this is the best thing i’ve heard today, thank you phoebe
I'm not even surprised that this is so good 😭 both of you are so talented
Rewinding before the grim paralysis of "but it'll be over soon".... it's weird to hear the mental health parts now.
"Googling 'derealization,' hating what you find"
always hits among the hardest of the lines for me.
The airiness in her voice is just beautifuuuuul
This is my generations "we didn't start the fire" and in no way is that depressing
I mean it's a little depressing that we didn't learn since then, but yeah, this is We Didn't Start the Fire after the anger wears off and the lack of progress becomes evident
No it isn't.
@@grabble7605 The song itself, as in the lyrics and meaning, are depressing, but its role as this generation's "We Didn't Start the Fire" is not depressing.
I think of it more as this generations' "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)"
miss ma’am i’m not emotionally prepared for this right now
crying screaming sobbing shaking throwing up
this is just “we didn’t start the fire” for depressed people
damn you’re so right
based
u just made my depressed ass laugh
@@randomstuff2099 and at LEAST we are NOT a minority! :-)
why not have both?
This song breaks my heart every time I hear it
This is a feat. I’m in awe of this version of the song. It keeps all of the tone of the original while also managing to feel almost hopeful.
Hadn't thought of this song in a bit, but it's 80 degrees on an October day in Seattle. That unapparent summer air in early fall, the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all.
this is so beautiful, her voice is the most angelic sound ive ever heard tbh :(
My god this girl always has a way of making me feel every single inch of my soul and every single emotion at once. Pure magic.
Bo wrote the anthem of a generation. I will always be grateful to him for INSIDE.
We're together in this journey, always remember.
i was quietly crying when I read this and just lost it
I’ve been seeing live performance videos from this constantly. Glad u were able to upload it on your channel!!
the way your voice makes me sob every time hits different
This version is so haunting and beautiful at the same time. I can’t stop listening to it. Thank you for sharing
I love it, it’s so so so good
2 years late to this comment but you articulated exactly what i feel these two songs have in common!
man... my two favorite things together
melancholic comedy songs and phoebe bridgers
I am not in a great place right now and i've been feeling like i no longer, well, feel... but hearing this has made me cry a little, so thank you
An excellent version. Really like the disembodied sounds at the end. Kinda related to all the noise in our culture.
We all know that funny feeling, is actually bittersweet once it's all over
I know now why Taylor want you to collaborate with her ... Girlll i'm loving every inch of youuuu
I love the way there are layers of interesting background sounds that rise at certain moments.
I really like the way it builds at the end. It’s a great rendition throughout, but that’s the part where I think it even improves on the original.
This song is where I am now: acceptance. Sad acceptance but also relief that we don't have to lie anymore.
I just watched Inside (I know, I'm late) and this song was immediately my favourite; it already kind of reminded me of a Phoebe Bridgers song!
I.. I don’t even know anymore. This is the most beautiful and comforting song I’ve ever heard and it’s really all I needed to hear after I “backslid”
I swear bo burnham wrote this using u as inspiration bc the way this fits your voice just ✨makes sense✨
...... the only Bo I like is Bo Diddley...
Nothing against her cover but Bo's is clearly better. I doubt others here will agree being as I'm making this comment on her channel though.
@@constructioncat4184 well different people have different preferences but both were pretty good imo
@@constructioncat4184 i'll always have a special place in my heart for the artist that try to figure out the lyrics/rhymes at 4am.
Also Bo knocked it off the park, it's hard to top that performance (and the context it came in).
Phoebe's amazing and is shaping to be one of the greatest performers of our time,
Bo's shaping to be a once in a generation awe-inspiring artist, comparable to Dylan.
I thought it was an sort of parody/hommage to Father John Misty
Phoebe.... You music has been therapy to me. I've known about your music for only about a year but it makes me feel every feeling there is to feel🦋 I don't know how you do it but you do. You've been given such a gift....
Both versions of this song make me cry, but holy cow Phoebe crushed this
The happiest, saddest song ever. Thank God for the teary ending, the teary beginning made me tear up from the get-go.
this is so haunting, i can feel my heart beating
thank you phoebe
my therapist will be hearing about this though
was lucky enough to hear her play this live at the Largo this past summer, with Bo on the piano.
My preferred version. Whilst both are insanely great, this one sinks deeper to the darker depths in me.
Hardest cry I’ve had in a long time
wow listened to this with earphones and eyes closed and it took me to another dimension
the most unexpected crossover yet I am here crying over my math homework
Phoebe, I'm completely obsessed with this cover right now. You did an incredible job. Bravo.
Ok, im crying....this was amazing
Stunning cover of the best song of the year. I love the dark synthy sounds at the end too, very similar to 'All Eyes On Me'. Nice touch.
Thanks for this, Phoebe and Bo. Not sure if the tears are from humor, irony, or succinct observation.. they feel wonderful and this sounds amazing..
Saw her in Pittsburgh and when she finished with this my buddies and I were overcome with such strong emotions of so many different feelings. Not many experiences like that in my life
Listened to this as I read through the results of a recent psychological assessment. Among other things, it said that I had "depressive symptoms in the 85th percentile... self reported depressive symptoms are high even compared to a clinical population." Felt very appropriate.
Can't tell you how much I wanted this.. been watching the fancams ever since it came out.
the crossover we didn't ask for, and my fragile heart didn't need
Isn't she just the greatest?!
this song makes me think of my dad when he was still around, I loved him.
Very nice rendition. Love Bo's Inside songs very very much, it is definitely one of the best records this year. Band coming in at the end is great, too. 😍
Ah just an extra dose of nihilism mixed with existential dread to kick off my day, thanks babe 😌
put this on the golden record we’ll send a hundred years into the future
honestly
Send this to the universe
We really all have gotten that funny feeling, huh? A beautifully melancholic and peaceful way to connect with each other this way 🖤 Bo and Phoebe get it so well. Everyone just bonding over the chaos in the world, but still choosing to rise above it and coming together. Now that’s a beautiful, funny feeling!
