Makes me wonder if the council have an ulterior motive 🤔 - let the plots go more and more overgrown, turn a blind eye when things are reported, turn a blind eye when rubbish is appearing in every corner - therefore no newcomers will be interested, the good growers will get so fed up that they’ll leave as well - result is a totally uncared for area with problems building up month on month - solution would be win win for the council as they can sell or develop the land - there’s money to be made and so maybe they’re just biding their time until they can blame the allotment holders for not looking after the site - those are my thoughts anyway x

    • @alisonforrester4612
      @alisonforrester4612 3 роки тому +5

This is what goes through my head. We are self managed, we have wanted the council to take it back as the chairman and committee are unable to work together and follow the constitution and handbook. Some plots holders then bend the rules with their committee cronies to suit themselves while others are treated differently. It’s lead to violence, it seems at the moment that we are ungovernable with the chairman and 2 other officers we have. This has lead us to want the council to take us back, to get control of the place. However I worry that your suggestion here is a very big possibility.

@@alisonforrester4612 I don’t know the answer to your problems because I’m not familiar with the workings of allotment committees etc but if I was in the same position I think I’d be tempted to go above the bureaucracy and contact both the local councillor and MP that govern the area concerned, ask for their help regarding fly tipping if that’s a problem on your site (and any other issues - no harm in asking - the worst they can say is that they can’t help) tell them you are concerned about the rubbish as it’s a health hazard and also give environmental health a ring (I once mentioned to my local housing association that I was going to report an issue to environmental health and within 30 minutes my problem had been resolved, I’d been on and off the phone over 3 hours and was getting nowhere until I said the magic “environmental health” words - I kid you not) I’d also get in touch with the local newspaper. Good luck x

A lot of people find a full size plot too large to handle but councils appear loath to reorganise into half size plots.
I took on a 'jungle' plot in February, only to find it was 100-150mm of topsoil over iron mine waste.
Bought in 8 tons of topsoil & 3 tons of domestic green waste compost for a 90m² plot, added a 10'x20' polytunnel & have harvested 120kg of maincrop potatoes, 40kg of tomatoes, 15kg French beans, peppers, cucumbers, rhubarb...
Asked if I could take on the overgrown plot next to mine but was told there was a waiting list. If so, why have I had to hit it with weedkiller twice to keep the mess from spreading seeds all over the place?

  • @TheWtfnonamez
    @TheWtfnonamez Рік тому

I see both sides of this argument tbh.
I waited a year and a half for my allotment, and when I finally got it the soil was like black clay, and four inches under the surface was large rocks.
I tried to clear it and start planting but but just digging up a few square metres was three hours work. You dig out about ten pounds of rock, put it in a pile, come back later.
Meanwhile the people on the next allotment did a pristine job. In the space of three months and about 200 hours labour, they had paid for everything. Seriously, they came in with a cheque book, bought all the Gucci stuff, paid labourers, and then encroached across the separating border to push me further down the hill (shielding my allotment from light)
Im sure this Indian guy is a pro when it comes to allotments, but he didnt get there instantly.
Im also now painfully aware of what its like to be on an allotment where everyone has an opinion of how you do it.
Well I pay my money every six months for my allotment.
Couch grass is growing in from every direction.
Why someone would blame me for the couch grass on ONE SIDE of their allotment is beyond me.....
And lets face it ... most people on allotments that are not veterans are using family labour or money to have a nice set up.
I cant afford the lumber for raised beds.... the neighbour who nicked one metre of my allotment has £300 poly tunnels

We have x2 stewards (chairman and treasurer) on our allotment site, who are appointed by the council, have a plot themselves, and live close. They do an amazing job of control/policing. Possibly worth floating this idea with your council.

This is criminal when there's probably a waiting list for an allotment. I was wondering if people had given up because of that compulsory purchase/road development thing but you say that's now been abandoned. So yes, very sad, the Council need to get their finger out and order the plot owners to clear up or give up their plots for someone else.

So, Joe, I am from Concord, California. I was wondering why there are allotments in your country. Is it that there is not land or gardens in the towns? It's a fascinating concept and I have only seen them in the US within communities such as 55 and over communities. Interesting....

I am not Joe but I also live in the UK, here people do have gardens but they are small, and people prefer to keep lawn in their gardens. Most allotment owners are people who have tiny backgardens or who dont have them at all. Its also great to have a community of other gardeners around you

Some sites have strict rules about the upkeep and kick people off and give it to people who are waiting for one. It is a shame if neighbours don't keep the weeds down because they encroach onto other sites. The fly tipping is outrageous, I had rubbish dumped on my allotment which was obviously from other allotment holders. I will put a camera up when I can afford it so I can keep an eye remotely.

It’s a committee of 11, but 3 of them act alone for the sake of their cronie friends. They don’t act by the constitution and handbook. Because they bend the rules, it’s created anger, violence etc! It’s so frustrating. At the moment there is mutiny at the site! To have unworked plots next to you blowing weed seeds all over your plot! I really feel for that guy with a beautiful plot surrounded by 2 weed jungles. Surely you need a Committee that wants to do the job! I LOVE my allotment, but I find it so frustrating that we have a lazy Chairman and 3 ‘bent’ committee members…. Our site could be one to be proud of and it’s not.

Oh that is heartbreaking. I think anyone eager to take on a plot would be despondent to take a plot on when it looks like that. I think maybe they should make smaller plots at reduced rates. Maybe a small area with just community gardens. Maybe they can try to get a group home for disabled men or womento take a plot on as it would be a nice activity for them. I think maybe better committee would help and they should regularly check plots and issue clean up notices and if ignored vacating notices. Maybe the carpet could be placed over some of that really bad plots just to kill weeds for a few weeks and then moved to another weedy spot. I think council should maybe clean up some of the plots that have been dumped on or have been vacant for years.

Hello this is the first time seeing you and this allotment site. I am following several folks having allotment sites. So Surprised saddened dismayed. The complete lack of respect shown by the council that accepts rent for a clean site and well managed allotments. The few that are working and caring for their plots should be given free rent or severely reduced rent. I do not know where you live where this place is and where other sites are in relation to where you live. I would think carefully before just quitting. I did hear you say you have a son you want to be introduced to this way of growing food being good stewards of the land we are blessed to have. So I hope you can find a good solution and make the best real decision that benefits you and your family as your first responsibility is to your family. Remove everyone else and all the other allotment plots from your mind and see can you find the desire to continue this here or look for another place. Good luck to you mate blessings for you as you work on this situation.

Joe , I think it's such a shame that the council are they way they are in your area. But even more so the amount of apathy and unwillingness of the site comity to deal with the obvious problems at hand. It looks to me that it needs a good reshuffle and were needed replacement of comity members by the few that actually do give a monkeys about the site. And are able to liaise and chase up problems with the council. The old boy there stuck with his plot between two waistlands would make a good ambassador (Chairman)😉
It might be worth something to look into when moving onto your next allotment. Chatting to the other gardener's. Cant beat a bit of local knowledge lol anything to save the stress, disappointments and headaches. Anyway keep doing what your doing and stay true to yourself.

fly tipping is a big problem everywhere. people have shown their true colours since covid in that they only care about themselves. every road where I live has fly tipping and / or broken glass across the pavements, NOT good for dog walking (I too have a husky) I believe the councils are not bothered and are just hoping that people will go around and clear up the mess, meaning the council do not have to pay for this and they can give the bosses big bonuses - possibly the same as what is going on in that allotment space
maybe either the people with nice plots need to with hold payment for the plot until the others are cleared or they should just take over the other plots and see what the council says, if it's not being used why would the council care? and if they council want to take the land back for a new owner then hand the council a bill for cleaning the site!
(yeah I doubt they would get the money but...)

Joe send a copy of your video to the council it really is not acceptable, I feel so sorry for that lovely gentleman. What council is it? Name them and shame them.

Did the council reverse the compulsory purchase, or just not carry it out? Did they notify the people they originally notified of the compulsory, of the reversal? You can't manage a garden without knowing that todays seeds, can have long enough to grow. Unfortunately the councils' funding has been diverted and looks like there will be cuts. Without a dynamic committee and some backing from the council, this won't be reversed. This will make it easier for this area to be built over, next time. A great shame.

Time to get rid of the committee or council rep. What about the council sending in a tree removal/wood chopper to clear all of the rubbish lots so new gardeners have a chance?

In the world we live in now I would of thought people would use them just for green space like a garden away from home. I can’t believe how many vacant and trash plots there are.

Its so sad to see. I'll wager this site will be sold off for housing. That's where the money is for cash strapped councils.

Hi newly subscribed. Want to like the video as you're highlighting the issues but want to dislike it at the same time for obvious reasons, the people dumping and not taking care. No one should judge you for not living near when all you are doing is something you care about.

Thank you for your comment, it’s all very uncomfortable viewing I know but I have to highlight the issues on behalf of those who don’t or wont through fear of losing their plots

Where do you get water from?
I live in Australia Sydney NSW, my council has similar allotments for market gardeners which do well.

Has exactly the same issue when I was trying to get a plot. Owners letting it overgrown as they want to sell it for housing
