How Good is 16 Year Old Photography Tech? A look at the Phase One P20

  • How good is the Phase One p20 in 2020? I have this medium format sensor on a camera that can take film and this Digi back. It's a great setup to have both available in one system. Today I look at the P20, a 16-year-old CCD sensor. Now I totally want to see how a modern Phase One sensor performs. Not for Megapixels but just for the highlight roll-off and the color.
    Thanks for watching everyone!

I use my Db only with ISO 50 and never change that, even I am shooting long exposure at night. Capture One removes the noise without any lost of details. When I compare the results to my Canon 5 DSR - it's just mind-blowing. Every time when I see the pics that I took with my Leaf Db on its little screen, I always think, that these shots never ever will be great and when I transfer the files into Capture One, I always get a big smile in my face. When I did not miss the focus, 9 of 10 pictures will be useable.

I shot with this back on many shoots and then upgraded to a p45+ and finally to an iq260. The salespeople tried to get me to get the iq250 because it was cmos but for me the point of these was the ccd sensor; if you take care to get everything at the proper exposure value the quality is still fantastic. I always shot at iso 50 or 100 and always lit to maintain the proper exposure settings. Modern cameras have spoiled us with their amazing highlight and shadow recovery, Glad to have it in many cases but the method of shooting is very different between the two.

Really interesting. CCD seems to behave like film. I got myself a P30+, the results are just astounding since you stay in its field of use. I am tented by CMOS on medium format, most because I would like to shoot over 100ISO sometimes ahah, but I am afraid I might lost something undefinable 😊

CCD and Foveon sensors are interesting but as you implyed, once you go above the default ISO the photos are, not unusable, but not quite usable either. The colours on tha sensors on base ISO are phenomenal and they indeed behave like film, they also offer a lot of options in post.
CMOS sensors are workhorses but in medium format they are stripped down to basic advantages of the size.If you don't need the size, the option to crop a lot, the MP and resolution for the post edit, the sense of depth that larger sensors offer or the different way that focal lengths work in larger sensors then you are better of with a full frame sensor. In terms of colour you get little to nothing comparatively with let's say any APS-C CMOS sensors, they unfortunately pretty much work the same way in different scales.
In your case i Bielive you have the sensor plus technology that you get a 10MP equivalent but you also get higher ISO, that's a nice thing to have, haven't seen many people commenting on that feature, thus I have no idea how usable the end result is at 6400iso, if you do know from your experience please let me know.

one thing worth keeping in mind, this is an older ccd style sensor, so does respond differently, aka doesn't like 'hot pixcels' so dealing with bright conditions may be a little noisy, but this IS to be expected, just the nature of the tech at the time.

Thanks for the comment. In working with the files, I found it retains bright areas better than details in the shadows. Is this similar to what you found?

I have a H25 (22 MP) it’s a similar sensor but without the screen and buttons on the back. The main highlight of these sensors are the bigger 9micron fat sensors. It was interesting to see how Lightroom couldn’t fix the underexposed details of the trees. I usually don’t have any problem getting back detail from my underexposed images on Capture one. I am usually shooting at ISO 50.

I still use a Fuji GX680 with a 30MP phase one back for commercial work and a Hasselblad H2D-39, both are quite old but they get the job done without any kinda problems. I rent a cam if I need more resolution, cause I won‘t give up using mine and I don‘t see any need to upgrade cause both are still perfectly capable for 90% of the work I do. Well, the Hasselblad has pretty annoying connection issues, but besides this, a decent camera system

Capture One will do a much better job (i.e. less digital noise) converting P20 raw than will Lightroom. Even now in 2022, image for image C1 does a far better job converting Phase One DB raw files than does the latest Lightroom.

Thanks for the video. You will get much better results with your P 20 Back, when you use Capture One Software instead of LR. The image quality will look much better, when you use Capture One. I use the Leaf Aptus 65s Back on a Mamyia 645 AFD III / Phase One DF and also compared the Pics to my Canon EOS 5 DSR - well, my results are, that the 28 MP Digital Back still delivers much better quality in colors, depth and dynamic range compared to the Canon 5 DSR with the 50 MP. The difference between 50 MP on a 35mm sensor and the 28 MP on a medium format sensor are in my opinion very similar. The Aptus Back gives me more flexibility in the editing process, while the Canon shows me very fast the limits compared to the DB. You should try this out and compare them both again when you use Capture One Software and export a Tiff file to LR. The results will be totally different. The raw converter of Lr is not able to get the full potential out of an DB. When I got my fist DB, I was totally disappointed with the quality and I got exactly the same results as in your video, until I had changed my workflow and started to use Capture One.
Thanks again for this video and the comparison.
    Best regards from germany
