No problem at all. I'm glad this helped. I would definitely suggest playing around with different styles and profiles to see what you like as well. But HLG2 is a great bet for sure!
Going to try this and see if my greens get better as so on the yellow side! Also I use a mac, what do you use as calibration settings - 1st time ever calibrating my monitor too - its a minefield to someone who hasnt done it b4. As surely how ever your monitor is set, also alters the colour space! I use photography more and edit in both Lr and Ps. I have the A7Riii but had a nikon before and no problems with the Nikon greens. Thanks F
Hey man really awesome content. I have the a7iii and tamron 17-28 and your videos have helped me out tremendously. I have a few questions 1. what maximum iso settings do you use? 2. what aperture do you typically use? 3. Your footage is so clear and sharp, how is that? 4. The footage is nice and bright (particularly where you see windows) but not straining on the eyes, how do you achieve this? Sorry, I know it's alot of questions. Thank you in advance!
Hey! So glad to hear that. I’m happy to answer. 1. I don’t really have a maximum of use, just whatever I need to get the shot. But I’m comfortable on the A7III up to 6400-8000. 12,800 if in a pinch. 2.I usually adjust based on what I need for the shot, but most of the time I’m indoors and open it to 2.8 on the 17-28 3. The sharpness usually really starts shining when you add the contract back in while color grading. Also help to get the right exposure when shooting so you don’t have to adjust much in post. It can muddy it up. 4. I usually push the highlights as far as I can without it being to blown out or distracting. Using the HLG profile definitely helps.
awesome content mate! I have exactly the same setup as you do! A7iii with the tamron 17-28 ! I use HLG3 with BT.2020 (and put a 'good' camera LUT to change to 709) and i noticed that when I apply the LUT, the picture gets a bit darker than yours. Yours is much brighter. Do you recommend HLG2 with REC709 colour space? Is it my colour correction you think? I'm asking because I'm sure you played around with every possible setting on the a7iii and I'd like to know what is the best to get the brightest image possible inside properties when lighting conditions are not optimal. thanks in advance!
Thank you so much. So if I’m understanding you correctly, the image gets darker after applying a conversion lut? If that is the case it’s probably the lut. I usually shoot it in the 709 color space. When it comes to 8 bit footage, the less tweaking you have to do the better.
@@darpinomedia9619 Thanks a lot for your reply! I really appreciate that! after I wrote the original message, I actually did a small test at my place with 709 color space (and your exact same settings) and it already looks much better! So I confirm that the conversion LUT created that. One more question if you don't mind me asking please. In your job shadow video ua-cam.com/video/wufwl_SKYgE/v-deo.html at around 2:30 into the video you talked about the ISO. Do you usually set the ISO manually for every room? I bracket my ISO between 100-12000 and leave it on auto throughout the whole shoot. I need to shoot at 1/100th of a second (europe PAL) which is similar to your 1/125th at 60fps. Thanks a lot once again and looking forward to your new videos!
@@maltastudy No problem at all! Yea I typically adjust the ISO and white balance based on the room. I don’t like when the exposure changes in the middle of a shot.
Watching this from fells point! So my footage is still blown out when uploading in premiere. What is your color space in your sequence settings? Seems like making it rec 2100 hlg helps but Im not sure if that's the right way. Thanks! Also do you usually over expose HLG?
Thats awesome! In regards to the hlg thing That’s strange. I don’t typically change anything on the premiere timeline. Pretty sure it defaults to 709 but I’m not sure. Also, I try it get it as close as I can to what I want in post. Sometimes I will expose to the right, but most of the time I just expose it how I want it to look.
Hey just shot a video with these settings and I brought the footage into premiere and it looks super bright. What do I change in premiere for the HLG footage to look normal?
Hmmm. That’s odd. It usually does that if you try to play the footage outside of an editor. But it usually automatically converts it when you import. May have to do some digging 🤔
@@darpinomedia9619 Outside of the editor like if i just open the original file it looks fine but when I bring it into Premiere it looks brighter than originally shot. In premiere I have my sequence settings color space set to Rec 709. I tried interpreting the footage to Rec 709 or Rec 2020 but still the same problem
@@darpinomedia9619 Since Premieres latest update im not sure how to get this footage to look normal and ive been trying for an hour now to experiment with different solutions but nothing seems to work
Ok so i spent 4hrs with an issue where you bring it in and it looks over exposed. The reason this happened is because i edited with proxies. If you toggle the proxies off and make your sequence and clips to represent rec 709 you will be fine. everything should be fine
I’ve always experienced HLG having more dynamic range. I do like cine2. But SLOG 2 on the 8 but just never did it for me. I suppose on the newer cameras with 10bit, it’s a different story though
Another great Video !!. Would be awesome You showing color grading on HLG2
You rock
Ive had a bunch of people request this. Maybe that should be my next vid! Thanks!
Hey Daprino, thank you for sharing! Do you have video of your full settings camera? Great work!
Thanks for this! Quick question tho, how do you expose hlg2? 🙂
@@intanmate8625 I usually expose protecting the highlights maybe .5 to 1ev over at most.
Noticed at 1:54 you have your setting at 4K 24p 100. Do you shoot in 4K or HD?
On the A7III shot 4K for 24fps and 1080 when shooting 60fps
Nice!! This video is clearifying for us who are new in Sony cameras and don't have any idea of picture profiles and so on. Thanks you so much!!

I have personally never tried to calibrate a monitor. Other than trying to get the highlights and exposure looking right to match the camera

I avoid any HLG profile, it absolutely destroys the highlights, because it has very little dynamic range.
I'll stick to Cine2 or Slog2
