Are you quoting another video or are you just a dumb ass? The only thing he said at the beginning was he likes to keep both bass drums almost identical in pitch. So what's the big deal?
Everybody is understandably astounded by his stretching technique, but I just want to say the towel trick really works. I've tried many different dampening methods, but this is the best by far. Nice, low thump. I have a 22" Tama Rockstar from the late 90s, but my kick drum sounds amazing.
I thought there is no way I could do that, being almost 100kgs, but when he starting jumping, I changed my mind. Don't think I'll be jumping, however. 3:30 'haven't been through one yet.' Solid endorsement for the drum head company.
I could honestly just sit and listen to him talk all day hes just got such a tone love Simon he was my first inspiration when i started drumming watched this VHS so much when i was a kid
Well, I must say that after being in music for a few decades doing performance and studio work, I was dead certain I had seen it all. I was wrong...never witnessed anyone using a kick drum as a mini-trampoline. If it was anyone other than a master like Simon Phillips it would be an abomination. It's an abominable act I'll be trying soon. Very cool.
Ha ha ha ha and WITH his Shoes on??? i couldn't believe it. Love Simon, he is a monster. but i will not be jumping on my Kick Drum head with my shoes on any time soon. haaaaa!!!
Tunning bass drums have many things that can affect the way it sounds....size of the bass drum,Type of head used, how many lugs, dryer?more boomy?....i suggest to experiment until you reach the point you really like the sound and how it is feels on you pedal/leg.not very fond of jumping on it,but you should apply a strong pressure to the head to make it sit better on the shell
3:29 what happens if the head separates from the rim? Do you explain to the salesman it broke while you were jumping on it? When he finishes laughing at you, maybe he'll be nice enough to exchange it for you. It seems very unnecessary and risky to jump on your bass drum head.
So he says at the end: "I put the mic inside and tension the head up." But how do you connect the mic with a cable thru a head with no hole in it, can anybody explain it to me please? Greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱👍
Simon is awesome, but i somehow don't think he'll be jumping on any bass drum heads any time soon..lol ! I'd also be willing to bet he'll look back at this video now and say "rubbish" about his black Tama tights, cringe with embarrassment and have a good laugh ..
I first tighten the skins up so tight that when you start to see stretch marks I then spray "fart gas" around the beater head until it runs onto the kick pedal. Then, the split second I play the kick, I pass out from the stench only to come out of an unconscionable state to find my kit was on fire and my leg hair and ball sack was singed! I found out (in hospital) that my solo was where the pyrotechnics was to happen.
Don't ask which recording it was because I do not remember BuT there is a record with Jack Dejohnette playing double bass drums, Jazz tuning so higher pitched but with one of the bass drums tuned quite a bit Lower than the other--- and it's really quite interesting and Jack of course handles it beautifully though he's not known as a 2 bass drum guy,,,,,, wish I could remember which record,,, sorry, lost in the fog of my memory...
Totally NOT necessary to jump on your bass drum head 3:27. If it comes apart from the rim, you're screwed. If I worked at a music store and someone tried to return a broken head because he jumped on it, I'd laugh in his face. Simon gets his stuff for free, so he can do all the silly tricks he wants.
Actually no, the big three in drum heads (Remo, Evans, Aquarian) all make their drum heads in the U.S. Tama currently uses Evans as their drum head supplier for the drums they sell. I still would never jump on my bass drum head like a trampoline. That's just nuts and not necessary.
ive found over the years that all musicians are .... weird.... and its futile to try and copy someones weirdness. be yourself..... be true to your own weirdness. be different ... and be great .
And I get PISSED if someone sits behind my kit without asking. Whooo faaah loo!!! Sorry Simon, NOT on the same tuning page with you on this one. Your playing and drum sound is OFF THE CHAIN INSANE!!! But standing on my TAMA ROCKSTAR bass drum heads.......NOT HAPPENING. Peace and "DRUM TILL YOUR BODY GOES NUMB." 🤘🏼🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
It is strange, but strange people get to kill musical instruments in seconds. It is as if these mimose drum pedal or woodblock feels instantly when not her genuine master is banging on them.
Most drum head companies have 2ply drumheads which could be considered a thick head, but it mainly comes down on how you tune it and how much muffling you use.
I must confess that this was one of my first ASMR videos. His voice and the sound of the drum key and rods helped me to sleep
I agree, exactly the same thing for me
lmao
Pornhub has also great ASMR before falling asleep.
lol, same
Except it takes me about an hour to fall asleep. 🤣
"My concept for tuning the drums is, I like to keep them in tune."
Brilliant work, sir.
Bobby Engel xD

@@spercoco r/woosh
He likes to keep them the same, he didn't say he likes to keep them in tune
@@ChristopherSackett That’s not a woosh.
I did not expect it when he got up and jumped on the head like it was a trampoline.. Great video!
Øyvind Lauen Thanks its off some old video. I do not know where I had it but thought it was interesting
Øyvind Lauen lol
+T Scott I've done it multiple times to my standard Tama front head and it's completely fine
Øyvind Lauen lol I know right .....I was like with..
did he just jump on the head or am I dreaming
Hahaha...Didn't see that coming!
Simon Phillips is the Bob Ross of drumming.
real Bob Ross energy in this video
" Haven't been through one yet" Simon says. Brilliant.
Ringo Starr " I keep getting my trouser leg caught in the pedal"
John Lennon " Take them off"

Do you touch teatter ead with the towel or leave a gap
One of my favorite childhood videos. Especially the part where he jumped on the drum head. Had it on VHS
I thought there is no way I could do that, being almost 100kgs, but when he starting jumping, I changed my mind. Don't think I'll be jumping, however. 3:30 'haven't been through one yet.' Solid endorsement for the drum head company.
Qui gon Jin shows us how he tunes his bass drum
I could honestly just sit and listen to him talk all day hes just got such a tone love Simon he was my first inspiration when i started drumming watched this VHS so much when i was a kid
The. Movie. Tourist. Trap
nice tuning..maybe I should run and dive into my snare just to get that perfect stretch you know lol

He forgot to mention he only weighs 140lbs or something like that. Lol
sounds like such a nice guy!
He is! VERY sweet person.
Forget your stupid bass drum, where can I order those Tama spandex pants?
Robert Schwartz lol
Robert Schwartz he's sponsored
Never seen anything like this stress test. i swear, i try this at home!
This triggers my ASMR so bad.
Dude is Nutz! Even so, I gotta try his trampoline method next head-change.
SuperTastywaves be sure to protect the bearing edge that will be getting smashed into the floor.
LOL. Kids, I found a new trampoline! Seriously though, I've heard Simon play his drums from a few feet away with no mics. They sound amazing.
I feel jumping on it is over the top... I get the reason but I feel it would damage the bearing edge extremely
No drum-head would want me to try and stand on it!
3:27 who would have thought they were that strong?
Drummer's ASMR

@tamadrums. Bring back these pants right now 👏🏼
Those TAMA leggings are 🔥
Nice roll, Bro.

No, matter of fact it isn't, good heads don't break that easily unless you're Chris Coleman
So he says at the end: "I put the mic inside and tension the head up." But how do you connect the mic with a cable thru a head with no hole in it, can anybody explain it to me please? Greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱👍
Usually by running the mic cord through the small vent hole almost any drumshell have.
He just destroyed the bearing edges of that bass drum! DAGNAHBIT!
What was the name of this video? I would love to track it down and watch it in full. Thanks.
Simon is awesome, but i somehow don't think he'll be jumping on any bass drum heads any time soon..lol ! I'd also be willing to bet he'll look back at this video now and say "rubbish" about his black Tama tights, cringe with embarrassment and have a good laugh ..
Just as Simon Phillips suggests; make sure you don’t have any razor blades stuck in your shoes prior to jumping on your bass drum head.
Simon Phillips tries gymnastics.
I first tighten the skins up so tight that when you start to see stretch marks I then spray "fart gas" around the beater head until it runs onto the kick pedal. R.I.P. bearing edges
Good exercise as streatching ;)
Simon says....jump on your bass head. I have to say that is a first for me but at 200lbs I won't be trying that trick any time soon!
No way! He's using a Tama Granstar! That's my drumset :D
Nolan Pettersen No, this is Artstar II.
Nolan Pettersen Tama Granma II
Tama Grandpa :P
Artstars!
Can take a bowel movement in the drum?
Nice hair style Simon

That's because most of them are made in China nowadays and they are like cheap toys.
Had Enough lol

good
Just because they are great drummers doesn't mean they are great tuners, lol. I won't be jumping on my bass drum.
3:21 Drum < Trampoline
Any body , what was that moment !?
I wonder if he still jump around on bassdrum heads.
Dies anyone have an source for the TAMA spandex trousers?

him stepping on that head made me anxious...
TheDrumGuy I thought he was gonna fall through it lol
I think a “few years” have now passed,.........but it’s those stretch pants you regret isn’t it?
ive found over the years that all musicians are .... weird.... and its futile to try and copy someones weirdness. be yourself..... be true to your own weirdness. be different ... and be great .
Depends on the music. As a [very] general rule, the closer you get to classical/baroque and sacred, the less peculiar the personality.
And I get PISSED if someone sits behind my kit without asking. Whooo faaah loo!!! Sorry Simon, NOT on the same tuning page with you on this one. Your playing and drum sound is OFF THE CHAIN INSANE!!! BOY!!!!!..Simon must be 25 lbs to be jumping on his bass head like that...
vintaaagee
I cringed when he put gaftape in his bass drum
And was honestly waiting for him to tear a hole thru his batter head
He reminds me of Hugh Jackman and my brother....lol
He's nothing like Hugh jackman
I hope drum head makers make a thick head for a low sounding kick. Thin head on kick? Sucks
Most drum head companies have 2ply drumheads which could be considered a thick head, but it mainly comes down on how you tune it and how much muffling you use.
I got wrinkles and my drum sounds like poop
Groovy pants...yikes..
I know Man! Once I saw them I couldn't look away. Haha
lol
Yeah, no...just no
drummers like eric moore be like, gtfo with this bs bro:)
Nice to see, but no real information. this is a joke.
...like your comment.
Before the days of UA-cam you'd be pleased to get this much info.
why are you tuning your bassdrumer and all your.the same it not.good for your drum set
