      Well not just women but the family unit. If a family can on longer survive on 1 income then the family is doomed. 2 working parents are never going to have as many kids or any at all compared to when one could be the full time home making ( a vital part of a family).

      The biggest penalties for motherhood, are not socially constructed, but biology.
      Motherhood involves getting pregnant, either being sick-ish for 9 months are being lucky, the sick-ish symptoms can go from mildly annoying to freaking horrible, then you go through labor... which for most isn't great either, there's a % of women that can't even get pain killers because their body is naturally immune for the baby safe pain killer and afterwards you have a body that's...a lot Iess then it was before. Potentially some lifelong complications like peeing your pants.
      If you can't take away the bigger penalties, and you can't, women stopping at 2 kids will never get solved.
      And that's really the major cause of the birth drop, not the people that don't want kids. That the people that do want kids, generally stop at 2.

      I used to think that, too. But then I learned about all the amazing benefits that Germany confers on women before and after they give birth, including two years of paid maternity leave and a person who helps with childcare. In spite of all the amazing benefits, the birth rate in Germany continues to fall, so I agree the problem is much deeper. Also consider the countries with the highest birth rates tend to be Third World countries.

    Our economies today, really since the 1980s or earlier, are predicated on the fiat debt based model which requires asset prices to keep on rising in order to perpetually fund it and keep money washing around the system.
    Couple that with 'the emancipation' of women over the decades which has also, ironically, indirectly helped to further fuel these rising asset prices as they enter the workplace rather than staying at home then essentially you have one of the keys to understanding how this situation has arisen.
    It's the law of unintended consequences.
    It also helps to explain why it's near impossible to unwind now both for cultural and economic reasons.

    • @TheLordSheogorath
      @TheLordSheogorath День тому

      Women have always worked. In the same fields as their husbands, raising crops etc,.
      Only noble women didn't work. Children started helping as young as three and were sent off to apprenticeship at 7 in middle ages. Infanticide was not punished harshly especially if the family was poor. The homesteader trend started after WW2 when men returned from the war and found their jobs being taken over by women because someone had to keep the production going.
      Come to european villages in the 50's and 60's, even later, children stayed alone at home while parents worked the fields. Lucky ones had grandmother's take care of them if they weren't busy as well with the fields.
      Stay at home mom is a modern post WW2 (American) thing. In Europe lots of women worked.

    • @gerhard7323
      @gerhard7323 День тому

      @TheLordSheogorath Sure. I didn't say they hadn't.
      I was merely relating women's entry into the workplace over the last few decades, particularly since the 80s, to the rise in property prices.
      It's a chicken or egg scenario whereby the lenders will ideally always lend the maximum they think the market will bear thereby ensuring that prices keep ratcheting up.
      As two incomes effectively replaced one we now see that an average UK house that (roughly) could be bought on a 4x multiple in the 1970s today requires a multiple of at least 8x in 2024.

      Thechno-capitalism? What a vacuous term that is. Technocracy would be a more accurate term, but it has very little to do with capitalism. It's always capitalism's fault isn't it, yet rates in communist European countries during the 60s, 70s and 80s fell below that of the capitalist west. Feminist agendas to put women in the workplace and tell them that being a child rearing housewife is the antithesis of contentment has everything to do with it. Also, telling the younger generations that having children is killing the planet, another technocratic policy, is largely to blame. Couple the above with falling sperm counts, and bringing boys up to be irresponsible dropouts, trapped in video games, creates the perfect storm for population decline.

      Techno/consumer capitalism is a consequence of feminism. Men must spend on shallow luxury and status items and continue to attract when marriages are not permanent. There is no saving when "boring" ends your relationship. There is no building with women who always think the grass is greener. You can't maintain a family with a mother who thinks cleaning is below her due to her job title. But who will lose attraction for a man who cleans the house, and then sleeps with the boss at work for being manlier.

    My grandmother endured 15 pregnancies and birthed and raised 13 children because contraception was illegal in her country. She had little to no political power and wasn't allowed to work in the civil service as a married woman and was under the control of her husband the moment she was married. He could rape and beat her without fear of prosecution or even divorce, because marital rape wasn't illegal and divorce wasn't legalised until the 1990s. He could have her thrown into a mental hospital on his say alone, while she had no reciprocal power. This all happened in a northern European country...and the likes of Jordan Peterson would have us believe that these kind of societies were never 'patriarchies'.

    Plus, raising kids is too expensive now in "Western" countries. In fact, the ones who can afford to raise several children are immigrants from the third world, because of the welfare system granted to them by the taxes paid by those who couldn't afford to raise several children. 🎯
    Isn't it amazing?

    "Why not both?"
    There are definitely people who have multiple kids despite not being in positions to afford them. There are also people who are in positions to afford them but do not have them as they have been conditioned to believe that kids equal giving up freedoms. I also know that for people such as myself, it's been a mixture of both. I could very easily afford to have kids, but I can't fathom taking on the responsibility and workload of having kids while still having both myself and my wife working exhaustive jobs we want to quit sooner rather than later with early retirement goals, which I believe plays into the argument above.
    There isn't a one size fits all, but I definitely think that not having a dedicated parent to raising kids is a major contributer to many families, and with motherhood being a downplayed role in favor of females in the workforce, it's left a role that is unfilled in many households, and culture has to adapt.

    I disagree. I think it's economic. Global economy means generations are leaving their community of origin and are moving to seek out opportunities. Everywhere in the West is becoming highly transient and the cost of living is high. We're meeting people online instead of through community networks and there's less accountability and referrals to find a mate making the dating phase much longer and unsupported by a greater network of long standing relationships. In addition to that the the cost of living is going up and it takes people a much longer period to educate and establish themselves. It also makes for a generation of young people that can't get through the early childhood years on one income in addition to not having nearby family support. All of this equates to less babies.
