Women have always worked. In the same fields as their husbands, raising crops etc,. Only noble women didn't work. Children started helping as young as three and were sent off to apprenticeship at 7 in middle ages. Infanticide was not punished harshly especially if the family was poor. The homesteader trend started after WW2 when men returned from the war and found their jobs being taken over by women because someone had to keep the production going. Come to european villages in the 50's and 60's, even later, children stayed alone at home while parents worked the fields. Lucky ones had grandmother's take care of them if they weren't busy as well with the fields. Stay at home mom is a modern post WW2 (American) thing. In Europe lots of women worked.
@TheLordSheogorath Sure. I didn't say they hadn't. I was merely relating women's entry into the workplace over the last few decades, particularly since the 80s, to the rise in property prices. It's a chicken or egg scenario whereby the lenders will ideally always lend the maximum they think the market will bear thereby ensuring that prices keep ratcheting up. As two incomes effectively replaced one we now see that an average UK house that (roughly) could be bought on a 4x multiple in the 1970s today requires a multiple of at least 8x in 2024.
Thechno-capitalism? What a vacuous term that is. Technocracy would be a more accurate term, but it has very little to do with capitalism. It's always capitalism's fault isn't it, yet rates in communist European countries during the 60s, 70s and 80s fell below that of the capitalist west. Feminist agendas to put women in the workplace and tell them that being a child rearing housewife is the antithesis of contentment has everything to do with it. Also, telling the younger generations that having children is killing the planet, another technocratic policy, is largely to blame. Couple the above with falling sperm counts, and bringing boys up to be irresponsible dropouts, trapped in video games, creates the perfect storm for population decline.
Techno/consumer capitalism is a consequence of feminism. Men must spend on shallow luxury and status items and continue to attract when marriages are not permanent. There is no saving when "boring" ends your relationship. There is no building with women who always think the grass is greener. You can't maintain a family with a mother who thinks cleaning is below her due to her job title. But who will lose attraction for a man who cleans the house, and then sleeps with the boss at work for being manlier.
There may also be an underlying biochemical reason for declining birth rates. Specifically a build up of endocrine disruptors in the water tables and food supply.
Doubtful, are these widespread reports of infertility, miscarriages, still births & infant deaths? Those things you highlight are important, but not a major driver in this. It's cultural.

I agree. I can’t afford to have children. I don’t want to have to work full time, farm the kids out to expensive nannies / daycare, and be run ragged unable to enjoy my children nor able to commit to raising them properly. If I work full time and have kids I cannot raise them properly. You have to have one parent stay at home to do a proper job raising children. Fact.

My grandmother endured 15 pregnancies and birthed and raised 13 children because contraception was illegal in her country. She had little to no political power and wasn't allowed to work in the civil service as a married woman and was under the control of her husband the moment she was married. He could rape and beat her without fear of prosecution or even divorce, because marital rape wasn't illegal and divorce wasn't legalised until the 1990s. He could have her thrown into a mental hospital on his say alone, while she had no reciprocal power. This all happened in a northern European country...and the likes of Jordan Peterson would have us believe that these kind of societies were never 'patriarchies'. Women simply don't want to go back to that kind of life, and frankly, neither do most men.
The more people the more problems - obvious answer ?less people. If we are not paying for schools, child care and maternity services there will be more available for the older people
Absolutely, late-stage capitalism sees children as an expense, not a resource and so people have fewer expensive kids. The cultural change that is needed is to embrace this change.nsince the Industrial Revolution, the world's population has increased from 300 million to 8000 million. We absolutely need to get back to a sustainable population again and not having kids is the only way to do that. And yes, I do appreciate the 'demographic timebomb' this creates, but far better to use increased productivity to escape it than to attempt to breed our way out; which only makes things worse.
@@eccehomo1904 The pill is a tool. Nobody is forced to take it. We use contraception in order to not have children. The desire to not have children comes first.

No, we have created a consumerist society where having a nice home and an iPhone are deemed essential and they require two incomes. We have also built a society where women want, and can have, financial independence. Is that wrong? In your world, women will return to being dependent on their men and with that comes submission. @@davidmorgan6896 families have to have 2 incomes precisely because women have been lied to, I.e. you need to work for some faceless corporation instead of building a home and a family. That having children is somehow a burden or a negative instead of literally where the meaning of life is found. If you double the labour force you halve the income. Women were alway able to have financial independence they just used to have different values. Maybe you are right. Maybe having an army of childless men and women who have the latest iPhone and watch p0rn all day is progress. I can tell you from experience that having children and raising a family has been the adventure of my life and I wouldn’t change it for any amount of money. People cant afford children anymore. When husband and wife have to go out to work just to make ends meet, the time and resources arent there to look after a child.
I think wherever women have a say on family planning, there are fewer children. When women can choose and not forced into marriage/procreation, there are fewer children. Plus, raising kids is too expensive now in "Western" countries. In fact, the ones who can afford to raise several children are immigrants from the third world, because of the welfare system granted to them by the taxes paid by those who couldn't afford to raise several children. 🎯 Isn't it amazing?
I think she’s right it’s a spiritual issue but with a bit of social engineering in the right direction (influencers etc encouraging family life just an example) this could be changed around quickly.
Trust me, i want a 2nd baby... but the expense of having a 2nd is whats stopping me! Being a parent is a luxury esp. for those of us who earn too much for benefits but too little to live comfortably
"Why not both?" There are definitely people who have multiple kids despite not being in positions to afford them. There are also people who are in positions to afford them but do not have them as they have been conditioned to believe that kids equal giving up freedoms. I also know that for people such as myself, it's been a mixture of both. I could very easily afford to have kids, but I can't fathom taking on the responsibility and workload of having kids while still having both myself and my wife working exhaustive jobs we want to quit sooner rather than later with early retirement goals, which I believe plays into the argument above. There isn't a one size fits all, but I definitely think that not having a dedicated parent to raising kids is a major contributer to many families, and with motherhood being a downplayed role in favor of females in the workforce, it's left a role that is unfilled in many households, and culture has to adapt.
Technology and capitalism are not the problem. Global corporatism and the style of hyper consumerism and the associated shallow identities that are tied with that are the issue. That is spiritual and that is no the fault of technology or capitalism.
I think that'll only scratch the surface. Look at South Korea. All the financial incentives are there yet they are still deep in the population doom loop with no sign of climbing out. If people don't deeply value families and raising of children, no amount of money will convince them otherwise.
Of course it matters. After WWII, the US pretty much paid married couples to have children with massive tax breaks, housing & education benefits. The birth rate soared after decades of decline. It is time the White Rich Aristocracy STOP pushing their class eugenics ideology, let the rest of us make our loving families as we see fit.
America actively fought national socialists in WW2 and here they are happily adopting the ideology in America.. what was the point in fighting them in WW2 for American men to then adopt this very thing. It’s crazy!
Make it affordable (lower cost day care, lower cost diapers, food, etc) to have children and people may then want to have children. Make maternity care free, give maternity leave!!! Problem solved.
I disagree. I think it's economic. Global economy means generations are leaving their community of origin and are moving to seek out opportunities. Everywhere in the West is becoming highly transient and the cost of living is high. We're meeting people online instead of through community networks and there's less accountability and referrals to find a mate making the dating phase much longer and unsupported by a greater network of long standing relationships. In addition to that the the cost of living is going up and it takes people a much longer period to educate and establish themselves. It also makes for a generation of young people that can't get through the early childhood years on one income in addition to not having nearby family support. All of this equates to less babies.
"The solution is to FORCE women to give birth whether they want to or not!" 🤦 You know something you forced birthers never seem to think about is the long term affects that stress and fear a woman experiences passes onto the fetus. A happy health mother births happy healthy babies, a stressed and terrified woman who was forced through the horrible trials of pregnancy and labor against her will will pass down LIFE LONG issues to the baby she was forced to birth.
Poland banned all abortions in 2021, in 2022 they had 305k births, while the year before 331k births. Their abortion ban solved nothing. If abortions would be banned, then ppl would use more contraceptives and other measures. Banning abortions don't seem to solve the birth rate decline, sure not killing babies are great, but it doesn't solve the problem sadly.
I work 2 jobs but cant afford to have my own place, so i live with my parents. Because im always working or in school, i dont have time to date. If i cant afford my own place, then i definitely can't afford a baby. There's low fertility because healthy women are shamed and poor for having children. Men have lost the ability to protect the family. They have become adulterous. This is on every street in the uk. We need to make the police do their true work. When was the last time you heard of an arrest because of adultery? This is the main issue to low birth rate. Its only going to get worse the more adulterous people become. Happy I had my children young enough to not understand this.
"Men have lost the ability to protect the family. " There is just nothing in it for them. The median partner value is well below break-even. Women do nothing for men nowadays except cause pain and huge financial risk.

The reality is people and groups with a culture of high birth rates will eventually become the majority in their country and birth rates will start to increase and culture will fundamentally be changed by sheer weight of birth
The only way they can maintain a high birthrate is to not urbanize and not industrialize i.e. they need to stay poor and powerless. Poor societies will not become culturally dominant.

What?? That is not at all correct. Some people just genuinely are not meant to be parents. Others are. However they are not making it possible for people to AFFORD to have kids even if they want to.
I love Mary Harrington, and she's absolutely correct on this. Techno/consumer capitalism seems to be deeply antithetical to family creation.
But it’s not. Just fuck and have kids.
I don't know, but all I would say is that correlation does not infer causation.
And communism is even worse.
Fancy telling us for decades "don't have kids if you can't afford them" then acting surprised when we do just that!
There may also be an underlying biochemical reason for declining birth rates. Specifically a build up of endocrine disruptors in the water tables and food supply.
Yes, not to mention the possible effects of a recent medical intervention.
White guilt doesn’t help.
Doubtful, are these widespread reports of infertility, miscarriages, still births & infant deaths? Those things you highlight are important, but not a major driver in this. It's cultural.
Love reading the comments many decrying the right of women and how bad it was for women and is for women.Yet so many high powered lawyers in the real world walk away from their giga-salaries in their 30s to have a family/Whilst the poorest of the poor are having children at a young age.
If people are slaving to keep a roof over their heads how could they afford spare rooms and food for children...
Fact.
No you don’t. It is not true. In fact I see better raised children by working mothers- I didn’t btw so I am not fighting for my own cause - than by stay at home mums.
@@zumurudlilit not true for you but that doesn’t make your way a universal rule

Many women simply cannot afford to pay childcare and work full time so they make an economic choice not to have children. That is a fact for very many. I’m not arguing the case as to whether children with a stay at home parent fare better - they obviously do when compared to being farmed out to hired help
How about encouraging people to be good partners to each other. No one seems to understand how to do that because no one ever talks to their children about it. When men and women are in a healthy, happy relationship, having kids is a wonderful thing. No one seems to have any emotional maturity or intelligence anymore.

@@ForkOffjewglewhy remove based on gender??

@@ForkOffjewgleI don't think remove, but make it possible for it to be unnecessary for women to work. I think children are better reared by their mothers (or fathers second) than by a stranger
Poor families of the past (&now) never used the ecomony as an excuse to have less children. Rather, it was always a reason to have more of them if anything. The economically comfortable, complacent, lacking in faith (in the future) & ability to trust & act in good will (i.e., pairing up) is where it's all going to hell somehow
Now grow your brain and tell me how they were supposed to not have children? Men stop to fuck or women murder their children after birth? In fact ancient Greeks did just that. Just not mothers, father had this lovely right. And Japanese too. And so many more others.

Who needs more people? It's a great thing, fertility decline.

Oh in that case we should let millions of Africans in to our country.
We have low fertility because women have been lied to and told that working for some faceless corporation is better than raising a family.
No, we have created a consumerist society where having a nice home and an iPhone are deemed essential and they require two incomes.
We have also built a society where women want, and can have, financial independence. Is that wrong? In your world, women will return to being dependent on their men and with that comes submission. Is that what you want? In order to solve a problem that isn't a problem, but a solution.
Marriage isn’t submitting to the man (that is utter garbage made up by unmarried feminists) marriage is team work and security (for both the man and the women) it is company, companionship, friendship and love. Together families are strong enough to take on life.
Yes, all women are stupid, and more sinners in the world will definitely solve all the problems you see everywhere. Force priests and nuns to have kids too!
Then women should be less stupid and think for themselves.
No honey, we were not lied to😂😂😂 we just had fathers and grandfathers and uncles - watched them and how they treated their wives and our inner response was - HELL NO WAY it will happen to me. You really think that some faceless corporations have more power than watching your own family day after day? But it is a hard to swallow truth, isn’t it?
People cant afford children anymore. When husband and wife have to go out to work just to make ends meet, the time and resources arent there to look after a child.
This women is to me like a female Nietzsche, her depth and analysis is amazing.
Isn't it amazing?
I think she’s right it’s a spiritual issue but with a bit of social engineering in the right direction (influencers etc encouraging family life just an example) this could be changed around quickly.
Trust me, i want a 2nd baby... but the expense of having a 2nd is whats stopping me! Being a parent is a luxury esp. for those of us who earn too much for benefits but too little to live comfortably
You don't need the modifier. It's just "capitalism".
"Why not both?"
There are definitely people who have multiple kids despite not being in positions to afford them.
I think a lot of women just don't want children.
I never did!

There's already a change in the right direction for Hungary.
Technology and capitalism are not the problem. Global corporatism and the style of hyper consumerism and the associated shallow identities that are tied with that are the issue. That is spiritual and that is no the fault of technology or capitalism.
Ban social media. Ban dating apps. Boom
Change the incentives (like taxes) to change the fertility.
Not if every kid is gay or trans
I think that'll only scratch the surface. Look at South Korea. All the financial incentives are there yet they are still deep in the population doom loop with no sign of climbing out. If people don't deeply value families and raising of children, no amount of money will convince them otherwise.
Turns out it doesn't make much difference
Of course it matters. After WWII, the US pretty much paid married couples to have children with massive tax breaks, housing & education benefits. The birth rate soared after decades of decline.
It is time the White Rich Aristocracy STOP pushing their class eugenics ideology, let the rest of us make our loving families as we see fit.
China is trying, Japan is trying. Doesn't work. And why should I pay higher taxes just so that Janet and John can have more kids?
America actively fought national socialists in WW2 and here they are happily adopting the ideology in America.. what was the point in fighting them in WW2 for American men to then adopt this very thing. It’s crazy!
I like this woman
Encourage people NOT to have abortions
Silly boy
"The solution is to FORCE women to give birth whether they want to or not!" 🤦
You know something you forced birthers never seem to think about is the long term affects that stress and fear a woman experiences passes onto the fetus. A happy health mother births happy healthy babies, a stressed and terrified woman who was forced through the horrible trials of pregnancy and labor against her will will pass down LIFE LONG issues to the baby she was forced to birth.
