    The gel plate master! Love that idea of not covering the entire plate with paint so it causes image transfers and textures to fade off. Also the torn paper edges! 😍 wow

    I love this inclusion of some techniques for softer more subtle backgrounds. So many gel plate/mixed media artists are so eager to show off every technique they know and every color they own. Therefore every background is super bold and screaming loud. Which is fine, but simply not right for every project.

    You are a Superhero. You inspire and teach me. Sometimes I just watch your videos just to start my day. Prior to me discovering you I watched Lori Marie Jenkins she made me comfortable using and experimenting with mixed media. You have impressed upon the art of tenacity and working artwork - how to push a piece to beauty if not perfection. I just finished a piece I would like to share with you but I don’t know how to do that. I am living my artist life and you are a part of it Teacher Mentor.

    As one of those who requested this, a particular thanks for the explanations! This is particularly inspiring, even among the crowded field of inspirations from your previous posts. You've struck a wonderful balance between the historically painterly aspect of monoprinting and the surface character that so many of us love in the printed and transferred image.
    I wholeheartedly agree with Jackie Copeland, below, about the torn-edge technique for softening the edges. It's a technique I've used in other contexts, but somehow hadn't thought of for use with a gel plate. I love the way that idea, combined with the other techniques in this demo, break that hard-edged rectangular format, as well as removing the size restrictions imposed by over-reliance on inking the whole plate. Also really appreciate the contribution your inking methods make to the final outcome.
    You're definitely expanding the vocabulary of gel printing! And, as you know by now, I enthusiastically reiterate MimZikZ's observation celebrating your nearing 1k subs. ...Looks like 5 to 7 days away. Maybe four. Huge congrats!

    I can't wait to try this technique. I find with using gelli printing as a background for your art it often just adds depth to your work and honestly it's not too difficult at all to do this! I'd say the challenge comes with choosing colours and patterns which work together. Another benefit of using gelli printing for backgrounds is that it looks like you did a lot of work to achieve those effects when really it doesn't seem to take too long :)

    Really interesting process, and I really love that your plate can be reused to amend/adjust/refine as you go along. A couple of questions…. Could this process work by making the plate on acetate instead of Perspex? And you mention hand tinting with watercolour as well. Do you have examples of this, and how does this work over acrylic? Do you add some medium to the watercolour? I have always loved the gritty rawness of markmaking with collagraph, though I am more familiar with a reductive process and your masking tape methods are additive, a process I have only seen with collage before. I really like the idea of masking tape, and the fineness of detail that is possible. I am serially watching your videos as they open up a lot of processes to me again, I am a cat owning wheelchair user, both of which limit me to some degree but everything about Gelli printing is accessible for me, and possible. Unlike many printing processes none of it involves excessive hand strength or bulky equipment! Or even specialist studio areas in your home… this is quite a game changer for a lot of people, and I am sure there are a lot of people out there who would find this fascinating.

    I am getting great ideas for working on my jelli plates from your videos! Have saved all of them for future reference! unfortunately, not had a moment to reply to you as to my own images. But soon! I am really excited to try these techniques! As I live in the Pacific Northwest, where can I get some hesson material? I am not familiar with this material. But dashing right along:like the playing with the edges of the plate! I know there are differing terms (words for materials in Britian ), just not sure sometimes what is meant by the materials you describe. The one thing I wish to tell you is keep doing these videos, it is such a wonderful means of transforming gelli printing into art form beyond just doing journals and masses of wrapping paper delights! You go guy!

    • @Xenopticon
      @Xenopticon 3 роки тому +2

      I live in the PNW, too (Everett, WA). "Hessian" is just daft Brit speak for burlap. (They have to make up their own words for things, for some reason. Quite adolescent, really.) :^D However, Mark also refers to a much looser-weave mesh as hessian, in this video. I'm not sure about this stuff.
      I got some similar fiber mesh from Display and Costume (if you have one where you are), but it was quite grungy and ripped up. I think that stuff was a Halloween supply, but they may have similar, less-grungy mesh or net for other purposes. You might try asking for decorative fishing nets.
      It also occurs to me that you could get a similar open-weave stuff by pulling a certain number of threads from ordinary burlap, the number depending on how open you want the resulting mesh to end up. You might want to stabilize the remaining intersections with glue, gel medium, or a small stitch, to keep the whole thing from falling apart. And you should count the threads as you choose which threads to pull, to make sure the remaining threads still weave over-under-over-under. (I /think/ you need to remove an even number between each "keeper" thread.) Hope this is useful!

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  3 роки тому +2

      I love this, burlap, hessian! And, Xenopticon's right, the piece of string mesh stuff wasn't even hessian. It's more like, well, string mesh stuff! From a haberdashery i think, or whatever it's called!

      @yeatesmakes  2 роки тому

      Not always, but often the transfer process dries the paint quite a lot and they won't then transfer without a further layer. You just have to judge it!!!!!

    Mark, question about terminology. You keep referring to “pulling off” an image from the gelli plate with “white” or “gray”, but don’t say what it is exactly. Is that a paint or a medium of some sort? Please clarify. I continue to love your posts!

      Would definitely be white or grey acrylic paint : )

    Found your channel through recommendation by Suzieq.makes. Just bought a gel press and am watching many tutorials on gel printing to learn tips and how to techniques. Have just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the videos. I will follow along and learn things.

    Greetings from down Under!
    Very informative videos, been painting a long time, but haven't mastered the gelli plate, and having problems transferring glossy magazine images to the gelli plate.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi, in your reply to one of the comments you mention using the right pen to draw over these backgrounds. What pen do you find the best for this? Thanks

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 роки тому

      Any waterproof, lightfast drawing pen wil do. You can buy them in sets with different nib width or individually in art shops : )

    You use cartridge paper, but it isn’t “archival.” Do you transfer images to Photoshop and use that to produce salable artwork?

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  Рік тому +1

      Sometimes sell pieces on cartridge but make it clear it is not 'archival'. However, it is wood and acid free which means, kept out of direct light, it will not yellow or degrade over time

    Are you drawing directly onto your gelli printed paper background?

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 роки тому

      Yep, provided you use the right pens, gel backgrounds are great for drawing on : )

    This is fantastic. Wish it wasn’t so fast though. It’s easier to FFWD a video ourselves if we want to, than slow one down & ruin the voiceover.

      Hi Allison, I've been keeping it fast paced and packed with tips and details because some mentioned other videos on gel printing are often a bit slow and rambling! I'll bear it in mind and slow down a bit!

      Not to confuse things, but I liked the pace - much easier to view and absorb than other videos. These are the most useful vids of any I’ve seen on this art form. Thanks so much for your generosity in making them 🙂

      sorry, I know this pair of vids was a little quick - had a lot to get in, planned on one, was too long so split them and then never really slowed it down enough! Feedback is on board!!

      @Beth Miller You can choose you own prefered pase/speed, btw (Even for just a specific part of the video). Look for:
      1) SETTING icon
      2) Playback Speed
      3) Automatically it is being set on NORMAL... 🤔 Lol... but you can choose
      75%-50% (from my experience, lower than that is way tooooo sloooooooow
      😅 but you do you. E-N-J-O-Y!
