What a Groove! Everybody is saying mangini it´s better bla bla bla. Look at this feeling! Power , definition, patterns well done! This is playing drums!
Groovy indeed. Please watch Mangini play Fire Garden Suite by Steve Vai. Good lord, that is what power and creativity is! Also keep in mind that the song has virtually no drums, and it is all his writing. I love both drummers personally.
Alex Hi Alex. Agreed. i know mangini since G3 1996. He is a monster! no doubt! but for DT i miss this soul from MP. however i also miss from MP the refresh drumming from the early years when we was more concerned about technique.
Yea I agree, in the Images and Words days, his drumming was a lot more creative and progressive. Towards the end he became more double bass metal orientated and went a different path. But his older work was a lot more clever. I mean, 6:00 from Awake is such a signature drum beat. I wish he had done more like it.
+MrRichardNoggin I don't think so. He said in the audition that he had a hard time learning the MP parts. I agree that he is faster, but being a drummer is not just about how fast you can play. Portnoy has feeling in his musics, his presence on the stage make you enjoy every beat of the drums.
i agree with that and i know drummings not about how fast you can play, but the way mangini plays is still as powerful he just doesnt put his whole body into it like portnoy does all i am saying is that he looks like a robot because he is all about efficiency and form portnoy was great on stage but i feel like portnoy stopped learning and expanding his horizons he reached a certain level and has been there forever never progressing using the same tired fills and you really think mangini had a hard time learning portnoys parts?? if he said that it was just to give mike portnoy credit and he was being humble im sure i miss mike too but it was turning into the mike portnoy project and no one was happy so ill take a robot instead
@@MrRichardNoggin wrong channel dude, this is not a MM video. This is a MP video, with the man who started everything with. First of all, MM isn't that great if you look at him like when he was in his twenties >> don't start a argument while you haven't got the facts. I am drumming for over 30 years and i make the statement that MM isn't that fluent and good anymore, he has to rely on very old basics that he learnt his body to do. Didn't see that coming did you? The man can drum fast but in his aproach of drumming and feeling the beat he is loosing big time over MP, I have MP a thousand times better to listen to in comparison. Yes MM was great back in the day when he played with feeling and pride, now he plays because he has to >> you want to say his live presence is mind boggling?? don't let me laugh. MP was a real showmen, great songwriter, a real metal fan and fantastic drummer with singing in his drums. The most experienced drummers know where i am coming from and talking about. So son, go bash on another channel about every drummer you want but not this legendary man.
Unbloodyreal. I must have watched this live version (with the full band audio) a million times but this is the first time I've heard the isolated drum track. I always knew he was pulling off some magician shit during this song but when you hear the drums alone, you really hear the subtle flare that the full mix kinda hides. Outstanding performance, outstanding drummer, outstanding band.
Dear Mike I love your drumming, for my entire life it now seems. In later years, with the original Dream Theater studiorecorded Mastertracks pertaining to the majority of the entire Dream Theater Catalogue, was leaked or loaned or stolen or lost and lent and then found itself in the hands on several people and thus also several copies of the Mastertracks entered into existence. Have no idea if we are talking about those giant reels the size of trailer-wheels, or simply digital tracks recorded or copied onto a sorage medium, but for once the "news" are wonderfull and I rejoiced when I was made aware of the unoffical release of the DT albums two years ago, because some of these who got hold of your MasterTracks, Reproduced almost your complete discography as Instrumental-only mixes. Fully professional done, a lot of effort behind it, and some state of the art gear, because the overall sound of the albums are by this improved. The bass in Trial Of Tears, and Dereks recorded but muted in the mix that was released (or perhaps lost in the overall "shuffle" of all the tracks fighting for space each in their own place.
Mangini and Jay Weinberg were both great drummers. But they will never in a million years capture the same soul the predecessor left. Thank god portnoy has come back.
ABSOLUTE BEST DRUM SOUND/TONE EVER!! THUDDY AND ORGANIC!! PERIOD!! MANGINI drum tone always sounded like crap to me. great player though... obviously:-). When "scenes" came out back in 2000 i new right then nothing would top that drum sound/tone that they got. pretty much been the same kind of sound for the portnoy crew since then. Even maybe a little more thuddy in recent.. LOVE IT!!
The wood blocks ? But you see the woodblocks in this very video later on… so he switched drum sets to just continue using the same ride cymbal ? And then over dubbed wood blocks which he has on that side of the kit anyway …… anddddd on top of that there’s clearly no click going on Your in for a treat when you study his playing instead of claiming overdubs
I fucking adore Portnoy. Best sounding kit on the planet. For me the most exiting guy there is. Beautiful person as well. And I am a guitarist!
Agree! I'm also a guitarist, but Portnoy is the biggest inspiration for me

That little groove in Take The Time was also pretty cool, the one where its before the keyboard solo and after that unison part.
maybe mangini is better, but Portnoy co-wrote the songs and songs SUCKS after portnoy left in my op
omg, the amount of energy....incredible
Mangini sometimes looks like a robot. I prefeer the eternal Mike! \o/
+Bruno Santos thats cuz hes a smart player he doesnt over exert himself he can play portnoys parts with one hand

This is definitly antology!
incredible performance, sound, technique, feeling and energy....
13:34 HE’S ON FIRE!!!!!!!
Is it okay to experience intense pleasure from listening to drumming like this
That Fill at 1:51 is what makes portnoy's playing really creative. That style was really a Dream Theater Signature. DT lost it since 2010.

Absolutely awesome. With a perfect tune and feeling. Perfect!

Is no one going to talk about how he dropped the stick at 8:46 and didn't mess up at all?
Mike, its very Mike ... I mean, nice
Snake at 4:44
lol play on 2.0x speed hilarious
That's either him playing a solo or a casual technical death metal drummer
The cameraman needs to be fired. lol
2:30 and 4:54 Zooming in to hide the obvious overdubs
The wood blocks ? But you see the woodblocks in this very video later on… so he switched drum sets to just continue using the same ride cymbal ? And then over dubbed wood blocks which he has on that side of the kit anyway …… anddddd on top of that there’s clearly no click going on
Your in for a treat when you study his playing instead of claiming overdubs
So failed at 8:45
Bad cameraman 😑
FAIL DOUBLE BASS 13:31
Wrong. Take a listen again, that’s what I thought the first time I listened. Cheers
