The real Top Gun school at NAS Miramar in 1986

In the summer of 1986 Top Gun mania was sweeping the nation. Top Gun school was at NAS Miramar (now MCAS Miramar) in San Diego. The film was released in May. The school received 80 calls from people expressing interest in the program-in June, 170 calls went through. An instructor likely had to disappoint many by letting them know they had to get good grades and go to college before going through the training process. No doubt the film did inspire many to take up aviation. And the new film will likely do the same for a new generation.

Films: incredibly good looking guys wearing sunglasses and sweating in a room.
Reality: some of smartest and sometimes humble people you will ever meet who look like they drive a old honda.
Yeah thats the most unrealistic thing about the movie. Real fighter pilots are the complete opposite of the movie. I remember taking pictures for airforce ball and it was like an accountancy firm party it was that dull lol
The characters in top gun are a bit more like fresh new private pilots. Always ready to flirt with any girl, showing off their uniforms and aviator glasses, and competing over who's the best pilot. Been there. That spark goes out once they start going through the commercial pilot course.
Me? I left the life of private aviation and became an alcoholic (chemical engineer)
Those real pilots in that class room looked pretty bad ass.
In other words: nerds.
So you're basically telling me that this is an alternate version of Revenge of the Nerds where things didn't work out for Goose?
Top Gun 2 is even cooler and the F14 will never lose it's cool! 👍✈️

@@bobcostas5094 In my opinion it's just nostalgia
Fun fact: Pete Logan (aka the kid at the end of the clip) went on to become the fourth most decorated pilot in Navy history, with six confirmed kills during the Desert Storm conflict. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Congressional Medal of Honor before becoming a flight instructor at the real Top Gun school. Also, none of that is true and he now manages a Burger King in Kansas.
LOL
You got me on that one 👍😂
Please bear in mind that there is no such thing as a Congressional Medal of Honor.
Do not dishonor the decoration of those who have earned it by mentioning Congress when speaking of this medal.

When I was stationed at Miramar my squadron VF-1 was the hanger they used for the scene when "Charlie" shows up for training after Maverick tries to hook up with her in the bathroom. The sand volleyball scene was right next to my barracks too.
My husband was was a pilot with VF-1 from 86’-90’, I met him at the O’Club while on a business trip to San Diego. We got married in 88’. It was a great time back then. What many don’t know is how hard these men and women work. I never met any that were cocky and egotistical. They are humble, dedicated and very appreciative of what they do.
The real danger zone is the flight deck itself. Truly the most dangerous place/job in the world. Was stationed at PAX late 70's to early 80's, worked defense contract there after I separated. Had a guy in one of the squadrons I worked at was a F-14 pilot, US Naval Test Pilot School grad, also fighter weapons school grad. Exactly the opposite of what was portrayed in that movie that was nothing but a recruiting tool. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

Literally everything in movies is maden100x cooler than it really is....
Its called the matrix. Fake vision of the world portrayed through movies.
I was told that one of the extras in the scenes walking on the flightline was Tom Twomey, who graduated from East Brunswick (NJ) HS in 1979 ... I knew Tom in the instrumental music program at EBHS, and he went on to become a Naval Officer, so ... it IS possible that someone in the original movie was ONCE in the EBHS band ...

BOYCOTT TOP GUN!! Bowing to China $$$
Looks like the new Top Gun BOWS to CHINA’S communist party by censoring Maverick’s jacket BACK PATCH!
Alex Lockie Jul 20, 2019, 1:30 PM
Maverick is not such a maverick that he'd stand up to China in the new Top Gun. Paramount Pictures / Business Insider
The sequel to "Top Gun" appears to have bowed to China's powerful Communist party by changing the jacket of its titular character, Maverick, played by Tom Cruise.
China is known for fiercely protesting and threatening any company that even hints at Taiwan's sovereignty, and Maverick's jacket in the original movie has a Taiwanese flag.
But the sequel has a new patch that removes the TAIWANESE flag and even the JAPANESE flag one on a navy patch on his jacket. C'MON, JAPAN??
CHINA heavily CENSORS foreign films and television and is increasingly catered to by filmmakers as it's set to displace the US as the top consumer of film.
BOYCOTT THIS FILM!!! HAVE SOME PRIDE AMERICA!!
These HOLLYWOOD bastards took out the scene of the American flag being planted on the moon landing in a previous movie!!

I've always thought you gotta have a perfect vision to be a pilot and here I am watching some pilots wearing glasses. Can anyone explain?
It has to be correctable to 20/20 so glasses are fine. I had many fellow AF pilots that wore glasses and I remember a particular Major who was an F-15 instructor that always wore some thick glasses.
Good catch!
RIOs were not required to have 20/20 vision, only pilots were.
Most likely NFOs/RIOs. I was a navy nfo and pilots could not wear glasses.
In 86 it was NAS Miramar
Pete is actually my uncle and in fact did not make it to top gun. He was the janitor of my high school and has served there 27yrs.

EVERY NAVY FIGHTER PILOT!!!!!! Yes EVERY last One of them goes to “TOP GUN”. Not exclusive to the best of the best!!!
Top Gun is simply a Fighter Weapons School required by the Navy for all Fighter Pilots
Negative. It's called SFTI now and you still have to be selected to go. It's only for those who wish to return to their squadrons as surrogate instructors. Not every pilot in the Navy is an instructor.
Funny my Captain last week an Ex Navy F/a-18 pilot told me otherwise. Me personally im a 8300 hr 767/757 but I did my training privately as I didn’t have 20/20 vision.
@@fgrau7376 he may be lying then. People like to embellish and when they don't know the basics of a school it's a good indicator that they are full of it. One of my instructors was a former 18 pilot and my uncle was a Tomcat driver. I confirmed with the F18 pilot that it's still a selection process and not everyone will be a TOP GUN instructor.
Not true at all. You get chosen to attend the course and you are then tasked to carry what you've learned back to your squadron. Where'd you get that from, LOL?

Miramar came to be, after : MCAS El Toro, California was shut down.....
In WWII, Miramar was a Marine base. The Marines went to El Toro and returned. The Navy moved all their "stuff" to Nevada, so NAS Miramar reverted to MCAS. Marines have a long history at Miramar.
@@donnewton415 Correction Naval fighter squadrons moved to NAS LEMOORE in central California. TOPGUN moved to NAS FALLON Nevada. Where no one can hear you scream!
@@Xman8184 Roger. Just remarking on the concept that there wasn't a "Miramar" until El Toro shut down. The funny part: While my wife was assigned to NAS Miramar, she "owned" the BOQ where Cruise, et al filmed scenes for the original Top Gun. She met him in the O Club many times. Turned down the offer to be an extra as she didn't want to blow all her leave.
