Society of the Snow: History vs. Hollywood

- How accurate is Society of the Snow directed by J.A. Bayona? In this video that contains real footage, the Society of the Snow true story is compared to the Netflix movie about the Andes plane crash, which involved Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 on October 13, 1972. Of the 45 people on board, 19 were members of a rugby team on their way to Santiago, Chile for an exhibition match.
In this fact-check, we explore the Andes crash movie's biggest inaccuracies, as well as what it gets right, including the Society of the Snow crash scene. We look at the actions of the survivors of the crash, including how the movie's narrator, Numa Turcatti, sustained the injury to his leg, which doesn't line up with the true story. Also examined is the avalanche and Society of the Snow's ending, specifically the rescue of the survivors, which was significantly more difficult in real life.
To learn more about the fact vs. fiction in this Netflix Andes plane crash movie, read our article, "Society of the Snow: History vs. Hollywood", which further fact-checks the film. www.historyvsh...
I wouldn't say Society of the Snow is a "Hollywood" movie. The director is Spanish, the actors are all Uruguayan and Argentine. "Alive" is a Hollywood movie.
Exactly what I thought.
Exactamente pero es gringo entonces para ellos todo gira al rededor de Hollywood
He means, real life vs made up. How much of it is historically accurate vs made up by Hollywood. Or non fiction vs fiction.
Also Spanish actors.
Alive was much much better.
Thank God Hollywood had nothing to do with this film.
Netflix has copyright for this movie
Why are we acting like Hollywood, in this context, is meant to be literal?
Hollywood tends to muck up film adaptations @@JennAmazed
Howlers already made an adaptation of this movie. I think it's called 'alive'
This movie is not a Hollywood movie. It was nominated for the best foreign film for the Oscars just so you know.

That's why it is in English.

Reportedly there are some scenes that were shot but deleted from the final cut. Two of them depict actual events:
• During the hike to the plane's tail, a blizzard hits the group and Roy Harley tells the others to leave him behind. Nando becomes aggressive and harshly convinces him to return to the fuselage. This is depicted in Alive.
• Carlos Valeta was ejected from the plane as it skidded down the slope but didn't die immediately. Injured and in shock, he started walking and didn't hear the other survivors calling his name (the shouting can be heard in the background during the scene with the pilot). He fell into a snowdrift and died of asphyxiation. His body was found on the 63rd day.
There are more than 600 hours of filming of 'Society of the Snow'. And Roy Harley, disrespectfully depicted in 'Alive' as an annoying crybaby, has always stated that he was never carried by Nando as shown in the 1993 film.
@@Adifgreat I think the stereotypes of Roy Harley came from the first (English language) book written by Piers Paul Read, a very young and inexperienced writer at the time, who felt he couldn't tell the story without a clear 'hero' and clear 'villains.' He chose to make Roy Harley and Pancho Delgado 'the villains.' Survivors have insisted over and over that there were NO villains. Harley has often handled many of the business-related details for the entire group and Delgado has generally acted as their lawyer. Roy Harley is actually Canessa's BROTHER-IN-LAW (their wives are sisters) and the survivors are close and supportive of each other. Too bad books and films about historical events try to invent extra 'drama,' to their detriment.
Roberto Canessa was the doctor at the end, Carlitos Paez played his father calling out the names twice.
And Nando Parrado is the one that opens the door in the airport to the actor that portrays him
There are like 8 survivors playing cameos
I noticed how every survivor cameo is in relation to themselves Roberto is treating himself nando opens the door for he’s family and paez is reading the names of his friends and himself and is playing his father
Thank you ❤
Daniel Fernández Strauch is in the church scene.
'Coche' Inciarte is in the bar where Numa's friends convince him to travel.
'Moncho' Sabella is in the airport, when Liliana and Javier Methol say goodbye to their children.
Numa Turcatti's nephew plays Numa's neighbour.
Antonio Vizintín and Gustavo Zerbino's cameos were cut out.
You guys… calm down. Obviously it’s a Spanish movie, but Hollywood vs History is the name of the CHANNEL. He literally just means film/cinema in general. 🤦🏼♀️

USians: see movie
USians: must be hollywood because no other person ever makes movies
In the movie I think the flight engineer only appeared once but in real life he survived up until the avalanche
Yeah and from what I’ve read there’s no proof at all that he was anything like the character he was portrayed as being in the 1993 movie Alive.
In that film he was shown as being a selfish creep who was no help to anyone and acted like some kind of nutter. It showed him snatch a coat that had been put over a young girl to try to keep her a bit more comfortable because she had been so seriously injured from the crash.
Until one of the young guys notice and threatened him not to touch it again and he put it back over the girl.
I watched another documentary comparing the two films and the narrator said he’d researched it and couldn’t find a single thing about this having happened or anything about the engineer being an asshole the way he is in that film🤷🏻♀️
I just thought how angry and hurt you’d be if this wasn’t true and had just been added for effect
if you are a family member of this man😕
The mechanic does appear up to the avalanche in STOS, he just blends in with the rest of the guys in the background
i think ultimately, the choices Bayona made for this film were the correct ones. Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy largely made the film they wanted to make, not the one that should have been made. The survivors said that film did not resemble anything of what they went through, and most of the survivors and the families of that dead refused to allow their names to be used because of how really bad that film turned out. It's best not do discuss the 1976 film "Survive" as it was clearly exploiting the tragedy with very shoddy effects such as powdered snow. And again with that film none of the real names were used. I am hoping Bayona releases a longer cut of the film.
I like how they called out the names and age as they died.
Yeah, survivors have told Society of the Snow is highly accurate, unlike other movies about the tragedy. That is why all the survivors and family of the ones who died gave permission to use the actual names of everybody in the movie.
The 93 film never had permission to use the names of the dead to begin with so it had nothing to do with the quality of the film. Parrado was a technical advisor on the film and many of the survivors visited the set. The main complaint was that Alive focused too much on Nando and didnt depict the team effort as much as it could have. The new film is arguably better, but it could be just as truly stated that it focuses too much on Turcatti. I enjoyed both films. Both leave a lot of details out and change some situations for dramatic purposes. The Strauch cousins certainly get their due in the newer film but Carlitos has less of a part. Alive did a better job of depicting the injuries suffered by the survivors. Society does a better job of depicting the bleakness and hardship of their ordeal but this is due more so to the style of the directing and cinematography than to any factual errors present in the 93 film. Clunky dialog aside Alive doesnt merit the disdain many seem to want to heap on it. Just my opinion of course.
It's a Spanish movie with Uruguayan actors
No survivor was consulted to write the script of Alive. Even worse, the producers ignored the survivors' disaproval of the script in breach of the contract which stated that they could make the changes they considered necessary. The survivors also thought they were not honouring their deceased friends by not using their real names, so they tried to legally stop the filming, but couldn't.
Unlike Alive, ALL of the characters in Society of the Snow have been depicted with great respect.
No, there is a VERY CLEAR scene early in Society of the Snow where it is explicity explained that they ARE NOT flying a direct route from Montevideo to Santiago, why they aren't, and the character literally DRAWS OUT A MAP of the route they will take flying south along the Argentine side of the Andes, across a lower pass to Curico, then back up the Chilean side of the Andes to Santiago.
Truly one of the best movies I've seen in a long time... Glad Hollywood had nothing to do with it
Agree
According to US Americans everything is either Hollywood or Bollywood :)))
Society of Snow gave the "deserved respect" to survivors and deceased much much better than the Hollywood made Alive! I wasn't surprised that all team are local actors (Uruguayan, Argentinian) and Spanish.

Read the book Alive! It goes into great detail and is absolutely heartbreaking. When they experience the avalanche that kills 8 and leaves only 19 remaining, its crushing!
The survivors don't like that book
If surviving the airplane accident was not enough, the plane had to crash on the most magnificent inhospitable place on earth! Cordilheira dos Andes! That is really a very profound moment in their lives, the fact they were considered dead to the authorities and their families but since they hade one another as part of a team that was already entrusted thru the sport, and the fact they were all young .
It seems is a lot lessons to learn from this horrific experience. They survived avalanche and 72 days off constant knowing they needed to try to cross that super scary cordilheira / Montain ! Wow !! They really deserve to be Alive 🙏💕🦋
The best story ever.
The channel is called history v Hollywood and people are freaking out about the title. Chill people
Not enough to worry about, clearly.
Unfortunate that they didn’t make it a 6 episode series.

It's stupid to put your channel name in the video title -- nobody does that -- and this channel only does it for select videos, so it's intentionally misleading -- obviously this channel is hoping the Misinformation can be used as Clickbait. So STFU
@swat007jp the channel name is "History vs Hollywood". The series of videos that he creates just like this one about other movies, are called "history vs Hollywood". How stupid do you have to be to not understand that? Eat more crayons 🖍
Numa Turcatti came through the crash healthy, and he, along with Gustavo Zerbino and (I think) Daniel Maspons went out on the first 'expedition' up the mountain to reach a higher vantage point to look around and hopefully find the airplane's tail. They didn't know how brutal the overnight would be in the open air, and almost didn't survive the night. Zerbino came back with snow blindness that lasted for awhile, Maspons couldn't speak and Turcatti was extremely weakened and never recovered, his health continued to deteriorate. The fact that he couldn't keep the 'flesh' down made things worse. Maspons was later lost in the avalanche. One of the books subtly gives the impression that Canessa himself accidentally stomped on Turcatti's leg while throwing a (understandable give their circumstances) fit of rage inside the fuselage, but that has NEVER been explicitly stated as far as I know.
This should have won over The Zone Of Interest
Good video...
In the movie, there appeared to be a second avalanche....Was there a second one?
Según los sobrevivientes si hubo y fue mucho más grande que la primera yvlos golpeó de lado pero como la primera dejó el avión medio enterrado la segunda solo les pasó por encima y quedaron en la oscuridad total.

SOS isn't a Hollywood movie. It's an Independent Film. Alive is the Hollywood movie, and is the whitewashed and glamorized version of the story. You have your facts backwards.
The actors in Society of the Snow are all white, too bro. I think you mean 'Anglicized'... which yes, it is, since it was made for American audiences. Ripping on everything American does not make you cool.
@@moderncloth No -- all of the actors in SoS are Uruguayan, Venezuelan or Spanish. Americans in Alive were just some redneck dumasses from Oklahoma and a few New Yorkers which is stupid. They know nothing of mountains, survival, or Uruguayan life that puts the story in the correct context. A perfect example of the crappiness of Alive is they devoted just 19 seconds to Nando and Roberto's hike --- which is equally as important to the story --- Alive also didn't show Sergio Catalan saving Nando and Roberto, who was the ACTUAL hero of the whole story.
La película no es de Hollywood, por eso costó tanto realizarla.

Society of the Snow was nominated for best international film and best makeup and hairstyles but didn't win.
Très beau film. Il aurait dû remporter le 1er prix.
They chickened out. The fact that the producers left out the pilot begging for water and his pistol shows that they don’t posses even a ten thousandth of a fraction of an ounce of courage compared to the survivors of this tragedy.
The horrors of the first hours and the first night were all but completely omitted. The consequence is a much less immersive start to the film.
And after so much effort to make the story so very accurate, most of the deviations and omissions that they chose are baffling.
you pronounce Juan as One

In alive they name Marcelo Antonio for some reason
Because, unlike SOTS, Alive as a project didn’t have the approval of the families of the victims

did not 'write out' an SOS ' signal, using dark pieces from the planes structure ? Did they not even think of it or did they dismiss it as too 'labour intensive' ?
The plane was small too that plays a hug part in this
Co-pilot error was what did them in
In some ways, the story of the Andes flight tragedy that occurred at October 13, 1972 is more accurate as told in the film Alive! (1993) such as 5 people who died instantly when those sitting in the back row of the seats were thrown from the plane when its tail hit the mountain, as were the 8 people who were killed by an avalanche in the middle of the night at day 17th.
Did you watch Society of the Snow? Both of those things happen in the movie. Also, the survivors have said that the new one is a lot more accurate.
