- On October 13, 1972, a plane carrying a rugby team from Uruguay, along with some of their friends and family and crew, was flying from Uruguay to Chile when it crashed in the peaks of the Andes mountain ranges. The survivors had only a bottle of rum and a few snacks to sustain them. After nine days, they resorted to eating the dead to stay alive. Reporter Alex Cullen spoke to some of the survivors and visited the site of the crash. This story originally aired in 2013.

The sad thing is that it was a plane full of family and friends. It would have been less painful to eat a random stranger, but these were people that they knew well
If memory serves me right they ate the bodies of the pilots and cabin crew first. Not that that made it any easier, I'm sure. I can't imagine going through something this traumatizing.

We spent 6 month to cames in Europe in the most dangerous mountains than this. But the media will never show us because we are refugee 😢 to leave our loving countries for some reason. I already faced more then this not just me a million people's is facing this in every year to come in Europe America Australia and Canada

Nando's story was heartbreaking. He had to leave because he didn't want to eat his mother and sister to survive. For sure, he also didn't want to see them being eaten. He knew they'll get to them eventually.
That would be terrible if not impossible.

And I hadn’t thought about it this way, that he actually left and didn’t want to return so he didn’t have to see his mother’s and sister’s bodies get eaten. Truly horrid and tragic. In the end his resolve to not return and just keep walking was what saved them tho.

I read this book as a young teen. An incredible story of survival but they were treated like criminals on their return. If I die and you need to survive? Eat me. I'm worm food anyway.

I watched this movie in 1993 called "Alive" its a team of soccer player from school goes for competition abd it crashed in the Andes mountain and those that survived there last 72 days until two guy went and find helped.
The fact that the one guy who was in a coma is still alive is amazing and shows how strong the body is and can be. Dude got INSANELY lucky

In his book he says that his brain was swallowen and doctors believe the cold helped it back to normal, and if I'm not wrong I read somewhere that doctors now use something similar to treat patients in the same condition because of Nando's survival.
So crazy back then how people judged them from the comfort of their beds, in their warm clothes, while eating normal food. Until they face the unthinkable of what those guys faced, they have no room to judge.

@Mr. Laverty yes because leather shoes are going to feed 20 men. Also, not to mention, if you don’t eat for those 21 days, you’re gonna be weak to the point where you can’t do anything in the first place. They did the right thing
@Mr. Laverty It wasn't included in this doc but in a different one the survivors do talk about eating wallets and shoes etc, they did not start eating people until it was a genuine last resort and with how cold weather and high altitude affects the body by using much more energy they actually couldn't go 21 days without food they were also quite active trying to find an escape by trying to find the tail of the plane in the mountains which had a battery they hoped would help them send a rescue message through the radio, while that didn't work they did find extra insulation that the 2 that took the trek would wear to stay warm.

I just came here after I watched the movie from Netflix, and it was horrible to see exactly what they’ve been through, I cried so hard when they survived and met their family, you can see they still having a trauma and with all the help and everything they still think about their friends as if it’s not happy ending for them💔

I was a senior in high school when this happened. I remember it well…..how disgusted everyone was that they ate their friends. The more I thought about it, the more I thought I would do the same if I wanted to live. I have great respect for these men and their survival story. The movie Alive is one of my favorites.

I cannot believe that the survivors who went through so much during more than 2 months were judged by others who were sitting in their homes eating warm food and sleeping in warm beds for eating human meat!! I always say that as human beings we don’t know what we are capable of in a given situation until we are faced to that situation, don’t judge!
When forced into a situation like that your morals and everyday thinking are pushed over the edge of reality. I'm amazed that so many were still alive. I personally think that news reporters had no right or consideration to all to ask such questions. For what? Curiosity? To sell some papers. Luckily they were healthy, to begin with, and I hope their nightmares get washed away with time.

They had this movie on netflix based on this story of them surviving in the andes, was a pretty interesting movie. Once I watch the movie I binged on youtube for like a week. It's a incredible tale.

This is the ONLY book I have ever read from cover to cover, without stopping. That's how incredible this story of survival against all odds was. The most moving account of the entire book for me was when one of the men was dying, he began to cry. When his brother asked him why he was crying, he answered: "I am not afraid to die. I am only happy that my body will allow you to live one more day." I will never forget this story until the day I die.
The survivors find the book 'Alive' quite accurate to the real story, but don't agree with the way Pancho Delgado is depicted. They think it's not fair to point out one person as the one who tried to 'steal' things because, in reality, all of them secretly tried to get some more 'food', cigarettes, etc at some point.
In the book, the word 'parasites' is used to refer to the people who did no chores, and it inaccurately says that the group considered not to give them food.
Actually, it was only one person who just sat and not even tried to protect himself from the freezing cold, Bobby Francois. He refused to eat and drink because he believed it was unfair for those who did work hard, but was forced to by his friends. For the survivors, taking care of such a kind and affectionate friend was a way of feeling good and keeping their mind busy. Nowadays, Bobby knows that his behaviour in the mountains was due to a severe depression.

Couple of miracles. It’s a miracle they even survived the crash. The absolute chances the fuselage broke like it did and slid perfectly is unbelievable in itself. The other part of the miracle is the guy on his horse who just happened to be at the river at that time. Had he not. They would have had to have trekked another 16 miles to the nearest village and that’s IF they went in the right direction. Otherwise they would have missed the town completely and ended up in the foothills tropics which is a jungle 100 miles wide. Very remarkable what they went through but the chances they defied is also remarkable.
Yes, some people who watched that scene scoffed at it as they didn’t know it was based on a true event.
I’m not sure how much further Roberto could have gone. As determined as he is, he’d become pretty ill. That one river they came across would have restricted which way they could have gone. Not sure if it would have eventually brought them to safety or made the situation worse? At any rate, just incredible that any of them survived considering the harsh environment they were in and how little prepared they were. Not sure if your aware of this but there’s a 4-part series on UA-cam titled Alive: Back to the Andes that has 4 people attempt to recreate that trek out. They had proper winter gear and clothing including tents and a support team but only raw meat for food. They also had a support team with doctors.
Being in a plane crash is the worst situation of all, but surviving in a plane crash and get bashed and a news spread rapidly saying about them turning into cannibals are even worst.. Media has no respect for the people who was just trying to survive for 2 months surrounded by Ice.. I wanna see this movie

I stand by the passengers. They are survivors, not cannibals. I'm sure their friends would have wanted them to survive.

Insane how they climbed that much with zero experience at -25 and no special clothing, shoes, etc. Just unbelievable. Glad the shepherd could read.

survival instinct is a hell of a thing. Its hard to imagine from the comfort of your home, but humans faced in a life or death situation resort to the primal urge to stay alive at all costs.
You need to look into Otzi the Iceman.
Because I got news for you humans have been climbing over mountain ranges for thousands of years tens of thousands of years with no special equipment.
I think after the first week their bodies probably uncomfortably adjusted to cold and were used to it by that point. I imagine they were aware of it but were numb to it
@@dallascopp4798Indeed. Our bodies are capable of incredible things that we don't think idms possible until we go through it. 70 days in a certain climate, there bodies were well adjusted without them even knowing/realizing. I still don't think my body would've survived that tho 😅

It's so sad that he lost his mother and sister he must have felt so guilty and that's what motivated him to leave, because he was so afraid to eat them .
No, what motivated Nando to leave was seeing his father. He's said this in every interview. He gave the group permission to eat his mother & sister, if they needed to do so. He wasn't in charge of cutting/rationing the food; only the cousins who survived the crash knew who was being eaten.
Correction: He's talked about his father's being his motivation in *numerous* interviews. I shouldn't say ALL; I'm only 3 min in, but I'm guessing by your comment that Nando doesn't get into why he was desperate to get out of the Andes.

Just surviving the plane crash was insane. I dont have words to describe what these men did. Incredible spirit. My heart goes to all, survivors and non survivors. ❤
I genuinely think about this story everyday, I could talk about it for hours. It’s absolutely incredible and without a doubt one of the most touching stories EVER. It’s so sad that they were judged for what they had to do to survive, but I’m so glad they made it

This amazing story is proof that human mind adapts to crazy things. Never judge survivors, you have no idea what it was like for them. A salute to the troopers that came out alive and a toast to the fallen
I just watched it last night. I cried at the end of the movie and it was sooo worth it. I’ve never cried over a movie before!! Truly heartbreaking what they have gone through. I felt sad for the people who died and extremely happy with those who survived. I just hated the part where the people stopped looking for them and they had no choice but to suffer for that long and survived on their own even without water and food My heart goes to them!!

I came here after watching Society of the Snow (10/10 but you WILL cry). Very tragic and sad, yet inspiring and moving movie & story. I'm so glad the survivors managed to not give up hope, but I'm so sorry for the trauma they had to face during those 3 months. God was truly with them.

He was a hero to them surely, lifted their spirits in such times of adversity and hopelessness, plus a man with a heart to offer whatever he can then and there. Idk if he had more of a role in helping them have those rescue helicopters or if it was a coincidence to have those helicopters right there in this encounter. I that's the only one bit of detail which is unclear to me.

I hold absolutely no judgment in these men I can’t even imagine being in that position. They didn’t commit murder they just did what they had to to survive.

These were some extraordinary men. Even just listening to the things they would tell themselves to keep moving forward and not give up is absolutely amazing. Most people wouldn’t have last more than a couple of weeks these men survived more than 2 months
They are extraordinary men. They benefitted from being athletes in their physical prime also and also the intelligence and educational background of some. The team members came from affluent families in Montevideo, Uruguay.
There were some boys who didn't make it because of mental anguish. They were hallucinating which was feeding into their fears and they died 😢

I still remember my 4th grade teacher telling the class this story and it kept me up at night for a week straight. I never really looked into the actual survivors and I'm glad this video got recommended. I have immense respect for these people and i better understand why they had to do what they did.......
Nando played a huge role in getting them out. He was determined to live and get back to his father so his father would still have family.
Its easy to criticize but you can never know until you experience yourself

It's because of modern media influence over the population which made people super disgusted about cannibalism.
Mostly because of the English culture influence.
My mother in my childhood once told me that every human being is a fighter and survivor even when inside the womb. These people were the true example of that. This story is truly inspiring for me teaching me never give up. I didn't like those articles written about them but now after reading the comments I feel that many sensible people are out there. The world is still a better place and our lives are worth fighting for.
Sergio Catalán (the guy that rescued them) was one of my family members. The survivors never stopped being grateful and they never forgot him. Every year, they would visit him in Puente Negro and make a big Asado. Till the day he died, they always kept in contact.

This story is one of the most inspiring survival stories for me. It's horrible that that media criticizes their choices when they had no other hope. They were reluctant to do it but it's their last resort. It's the only way they could survive. People are criticizing but they couldn't go a day without eating a meal.

The reason why they survived was extraordinary teamwork. Watch the new film 'Society of the Snow', the true story told by all of the survivors and the families of the deceased, and you'll see what I mean.
here after watching society of the snow movie. First time hearing this story and its beyond incredible. the two men who decided to leave on foot to find rescue is the most extraordinary story that I ever heard. I have no clue how far that they had to go but it was insane love & intensity for their friends back at the crash site. I wanted to see their journey more from how they survived on foot for 10 days long to where the snow melt. Incredible to see how after they're survival that did not take life for granted, even if we never experience it. His advice is amazing to me, to cherish the simple things, food, water and warm bed. I'm going to venture on to read the book.
I’m assuming you are referring to the book titled Alive? Excellent book but I would highly recommend Nando’s book, Miracle in the Andes. Easily the best book I’ve ever read about survival situations. The epilogue alone is worth the price of the book imho.

This was awful. I could never judge the survivors and I am sure it haunts them to this day. Most humans will do ANYTHING to survive and I am just so sad for the ones who died. It is unfair, but when was life ever fair?

Yes. Nando had done a student exchange to somewhere in the states and experienced cold and snow while there. For most of them, this was the first time for them. Plus the high altitude yo adapt to.

Just saw Society Of The Snow and honestly all the comments saying the survivors are evil or that they (the commenters) wouldn't have done what they did in that situation infuriates me.
1) They l i t e r a l l y had nothing else to eat, they were starving after a few days. Remember these extreme temperatures lead to your body needing MUCH more energy than normal.
I have never not eaten for more than a day, so I can't speak from experience, but when you hadn't had anything to eat for such a long period of time, the feeling we describe as 'hungry' turns to pure, endless pain. That's what the survivors also described. And at that point your survival instincts kick in, because you obviously don't want to die.
2) "Why were they waiting so long searching for help?" Well because there was a rescue team underway, why would you leave a relatively safe spot without appropriate clothes, 0 food and no shelter or even the possibilty of building one at that point?
3) "I would rather have died than eat a human, these people are evil" Sure you would buddy, sure you would. Just shut the fu'ck up and eat your McDonalds. I'm guessing most of these people have no will to live or are unable to put themselves into this situation because most of the time, the human body will do anything to survive.
I'm not saying that there are no people who wouldn't have done that - because the power of one's mind is also incredibly strong, for example the monk who set himself on fire, etc.
4) For people saying that the guy at 10:45 enjoyed eating human or for people who cannot understand that people were laughing in the picture shortly after the interview: Who knows how long the bones were laying there? Eating them became quite normal for them after some time and we cannot judge them for that because we were not in their shoes.
Keeping one's spirits up is also advantageous for survival.
I feel you man it was a tough situation. What scares me is the time frame it took for eating humans to become normal, only a few weeks... That reality reveals how fragile and malleable our human psyches are. This means we are always one global catastrophe and a few weeks away from cannibalism being the new norm. It's simply petrifying...

The fact that you know the man knows his buddy Nando so well 'when he winkles you know he is lying' and sure enough he started winking when asked how many pieces of bread the man really gave him lol. I felt the same way for so long after I saw the movie in the 90s ...and I couldn't get it out of my mind... that I flew Uruguay and Mendoza mountains and when I got to Uruguay I called Roberto ...he is exactly like what you are experiencing in this video and then some ..😮 the most amazing in every single way... it's not even explainable it's like another level that is so indescribable
I work at a tattoo shop and the other day a woman came to the shop to make a tattoo on her back, she is in her 50s. She constantly mention that she is old and should have done a tattoo sooner. I asked her why she do it now? She said "my husband died 2 years ago, it changed my life 180degree. I lost 30kg, started to work out, do 3 jobs. Start everyday at 8am and go home at 10pm. The death of my husband makes me realise that life is precious and everything can go away at any moment. So I started doing what I want when i was young. Thats why im getting a tattoo today" I had no word to describe.

I attended Mr Nando Parado speech in Youth Engagement Summit held in PutraJaya Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia last November 2009. It was quite long time ago.

- The documentary 'Stranded', which is on YT as Documental La Sociedad de la Nieve (with English subtitles).
Making that sleeping bag probably saved them. This group had unusual survival skills and perseverance. Incredible.
When they originally left and arrived at the peak, the man actually said a great quote. Even when faced with certain death in an act of desperation, he did not look to these giant mountains with loss of hope or fear. “I didn’t look at the mountain- I looked to my next step.”
Without that mentality who knows? Maybe they give up and go back to the crash site and they all die. Kinda crazy to think that might have saved all of them

this is insane. insane strength, insane bravery, insane circumstances, insane chances. i cannot wrap my head around this, and their calm energies are so reassuring. this is a one in a million chance that happened to the people who knew what to do. Whenever things get tough and I feel like giving up in life I always think of these amazing people and what they went through and how they survived and I push myself and keep going. They are all inspirational people ❤❤.

Yes, especially in such harsh cold conditions with improper clothes. Plus at a high enough altitude that their bodies had to acclimatize. They were burning calories like crazy.
These survivors experienced such trauma. Nobody should pass judgment. Only they know the horrible nightmare that they lived.
I feel that you can see in their eyes that they still struggle with the reality of what happened and that they survived. I have massive respect for them for being able to survive that long.

This is the best documentary of all, "The Snow Society" (La Sociedad de la Nieve) is with original audio in Spanish but with English subtitles, by far a documentary, much better than even the movie, there are several of the survivors !!!
@dancemaniaco Yes. That's the best documentary on this incident. It was made by a close friend of the survivors', and actually, it is one of the very few where the 16 survivors appear, since Bobby Francois and Pancho Delgado, unlike the other 14 (now 13) never give interviews nor conferences.
The director interviewed all of them alongside the author of the book 'The Snow Society' (Pablo Vierci), also a close friend of theirs, so the book is a much more detailed version of the documentary. In the words of the survivors, the book 'Alive' tells the facts, and 'The Snow Society' describes their feelings.
Regarding the film 'Alive', the survivors find it disrespectful because it is not true to the real story.

I just watched Society of the Snow on Netflix. I was so tense and shook. The film is so well-done it's actually scary💔It's so sad that not everyone involved in the crash made it out alive, but at least some did. I can't even imagine the horror of being trapped in the freezing snow for that long. These survivors were so brave!!!

The fact that Roberto still in the brink of tears talking about it speaks a thousand unspoken words about what they had gone through. Alhamdulillah, they made it, and was able to tell the story and inspire so many about life, survival and death.
