Back in the mid 60’s, when I worked for Mercury Records in Chicago, Quincy Jones stopped by to see one of our producers. I was a secretary (born in Paris). We spoke in French. I knew Q had lived in Paris for a while. He was very gracious, and I was a big fan. He recorded for us at the time. And he was a Vice President at our NY office. Lucky us!
Quincy was indeed quite gracious. And if he wasn’t you knew you deserved it, like the time he let the Beatles have it. The man was brilliant and he knew who the real talent was and they were not it.
Q! When Q came to Phoenix he hired a bunch of us to join his core musicians at the Biltmore and in Scottsdale. The sheet music was beautiful and awesome catered food for all the orchestra. Man, Q had Class!
I love Quincy Jones. Super intelligent, articulate dude, good story teller, tough as nails. Talented musician who knew how to play his instrument, also had the foresight and vision to produce and manage other artists. Not many people do all that, in fact I can't think of any. Definitely at the sharp end of humanity in terms of what he's done with his life. Great man.
Truth. Every word truth. I don't think anyone in the history of the music business has ever amassed a resumé as voluminous as his. EIGHTY GRAMMY NOMINATIONS! EIGHTY! I've been a fan for over 50 years, back when no one in my generation had ever heard of him.
To the greatest musician and executive TV producer alongside with David Salzman, Quincy Jones who dedicated of his legendary he will lived in a better place. R.I.P.
Quincy was all those things. He knew who the best musicians were and that the Beatles didn’t qualify. That’s why called the Beatles “the WORST musicians in the WORLD.”
He played in Count Basie’s Band, produced songs for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and the Brothers Johnson. He also wrote the theme for Sanford and Son and the In the Heat of the Night movie. He also made Will Smith into a superstar by casting him in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Quincy Jones changes the music industry. He had a talent and was a visionar. He met all the most famous singers and musicians in the word from Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespsie, Miles Davis, Count Basie, of course Michael. Most of the producers were inspered by him but he was the first one, over 20 Grammys..Incredible.
Love Q but as a producer no one can touch Lincoln Chips Moman who could produce jazz , R&B , country, movie soundtracks, pop, rock n roll, and folk. The man was a genius. Who else could produce Joe Tex, Aretha, Pickett, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Herbie Mann, Dionne Warwicke, the soundtrack to “ The Thomas Crown Affair, “ the Sweet Inspirations, Cissy Houston, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield, Rosey Grier, Jackie Deshannon, Brenda Lee, James Carr . He was so booked up he refused the Beatles, the Stones and Dylan. Amazing producer who produced the first STAX hit “ Gee Whiz “ by Carla Thomas . That’s him playing the opening guitar on Aretha’s RESPECT ! He played guitar on Funky Broadway . He produced the Box Tops . Even many more artists in about every genre ! Without Q , MJ would not have the dominant career he had .
Rest In Peace Mr Jones you were and are a legend , you were an American Treasure , now you belong to the ages you will be missed. My sympathies to your entire family , your friends , your fans , may you rest with the angels they welcomed you in all your glory.
You don't much bigger than Quincy Jones. I've been in awe of his talents forever. My band owes him so much. Every tribute, every plaudit is totally justified and some.
While this is not the worst way to learn of someone's passing, at the moment I'm feeling very weary. Adieu, Quincy Jones. You've left behind wonderful music and beautiful children.
@arminsteinke2301: Absolutely! A true proud american and american hero! His life should inspire all americans to vote right tomorrow (Nov. 5th), for unity and democracy!
One of the titans of the music industry. It's sad that he kinda sullied his name a bit in recent years with that Vulture interview. At the end of the day you can't take away his accomplishments. He's one of the few people who could do a song ("The Dude") and a decade+ later can do a sequel song that's arguably better! ("Back on the Block") RIP Quincey Delight Jones. Rest In Power.
Great jam by Snoop and the Band, which I had not heard of until today, Tuesday, 5th November 2024. In the 2018 biographical documentary "Quincy," on Quincy Jones and his life, there is a video clip of Quincy Jones being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, where Quincy Jones makes an interesting statement, saying that he and his contemporaries were not done making music, and that he and his contemporaries would continue making the best quality music they could, to leave behind for future generations. The way Quincy put it, is that we want our work to speak for itself, so much so, that future generations "will know we came through here." Loved the way Quincy put it. For what it’s worth Mr. Jones, future generations will know the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and Prince "came through here," and future generations too, will know that Quincy Jones "came through here." Rest in Peace, Mr. Jones. Regards, Michael M. Kamau, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, 5th November 2024.
An awe inspiring talent. A true Mandarin. His wide range of musical talents and styles. Plus, he was a homey, I might also add (Don't know why I would add that actually, nobody cares really). He will be missed.
Let's not forget how a few years ago, Quincy, spoke about Marlon Brando, Richard Pryor, and others, behind closed doors, not so secret, SECRET'S. Then, quickly hushed!
