    a rare blender low poly tutorial that isn't recorded at speed of light

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  9 місяців тому +13

      Only one light speed section in this tutorial and its at the end. Otherwise, glad to hear my pacing is good, I was worried it was too long actually.

    So i watched this vid about a month ago before i decided to go a different artistic direction, away from low-poly and more towards cartoony claymation, but I'm back because im a fool and didn't realize cartoony claymation is really just low-poly with a final subdivision to give a bit of curves. This is EASILY the best low poly tut out there! Big ups!

    Hey! I know this video is a few months old but i wanted to tell you something
    I saw you tried to "normalize" some faces several times, to do this, you just have to select the face, or the vertices of it, then press S to resize, then 0, then press Z (or whatever axis you want to make even), this is quite fast, just pressing three keys.
    althernatively you could turn snapping on, select a vertex, press g to grab it, then press z, x, or y, it will snap only in that axis.
    thanks for the tutorials, theyve proven quite useful!
    PD: i hope my comment doesnt read weirdly, i just wanted to be very clear with what i was trying to say, you are very skilled in blender and these tutorials have helped me a lot

      No drama, these are the comments I look forward to in not only getting better at Blender but for making better tutorials! Im trained in Autodesk Maya so I'm still learning blender myself along side making these. Unfortunately not everyone can afford Maya, but everyone can get blender and thats what drives me to make these tutorials for that program.

      just to add: you don't need to turn snapping on, you can just *hold* Ctrl while moving something, and that will act as if Snapping is on. It's faster than clicking the button on/off every time you need it.

    Good content! Good pace, you speak well and clearly.
    A couple of tips, if I may:
    2:12 If you press Alt+Z (toggle X-Ray), before doing the box select, then when you do the box select it would also select the back faces, so you don't have to rotate around and select each one manually. If you want to be precise, you can press Numpad 1 to switch to front orthographic view, before doing the box select.
    7:58 By doing that with the knife tool you're *possibly* creating weird geometry that will deform in ways that you don't want. There's an easier and better way: Just select the two vertices, as you normally do when you want to move, then just press "J" (connect vertex path). Done!
    In this particular example I don't think you'd run into any problems by doing it the way you did, but if you keep trying to solve that problem that way, eventually you can run into weird issues.
    If it gets annoying trying to select the correct arrow to move, you can just press G (move) then either X, Y or Z, to lock the movement to that axis, and then you can just move with your mouse, the same as if you had clicked on the little arrow, but now you don't even have to keep any button held. To confirm your move, just left click. You can right click to cancel the movement (or good old ctrl+z).
    I see you selecting edges a lot. To save some time and effort, instead of box selecting the vertices you want, you can just press 1, 2 or 3 to switch between selecting vertex, edges or faces, respectively. So when you want to select an edge, just press 2, select the edge, then press 1 to go back to vertex select mode.

      Thanks for the tips. Our primary lack of hotkey use is more to get absolute beginners comfortable with the software at a baseline and familiar with where stuff is. I want to implement an overlay in the future that will display the hotkeys I use as we progress into bigger and more complex models.
      As for the cut tool, thanks for the info. In an earlier tutorial I do explain this and break down its pluses and minuses. Though, this model is probably not the best use case for it given the model. The potential for followers to end up with stray edges, faces, verts and so on that could ruin the experience is definitely there.
      Thanks again for the critique.

    i think every 3d modeller has to learn and start from low poly. or at least to some extent do it, so you have solid basic knowledge when you model from scratch/from a limited image reference.
    if namco could make ps1 tekken cool with the limitation of the tech, and seeing how advanced 3d modeling have evolved, i dont see why we cannot do this as indie artists!
    it helps you push the boundaries and being more detail oriented.
    at least to me..

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  2 місяці тому

      Absolutely agree.
      Abstraction and shape theory is a big thing to grasp for artists in all fields. I believe low poly teaches people this as well as some good practices in formatting.
      I think, if you can model and UV map a low poly object today... who's to say you cant double the level of detail next week and the weeks after.

      544 tris. Most of the complexity is from the hair. There is room to optimize im sure, but I try not to impose limitations for beginners. Instead, just aiming to hit an overall aesthetic.

    Awesome tutorial.
    I had a stupid question though, how are you modeling without a refrence, is it something you learn by trying?

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  2 місяці тому +2

      Yes it comes with practice, and it helps the character in this is my OC. So I already knew where I was taking it, and nothing wrong with pulling a reference while modeling too. I honestly should have done a front back and side render for this tutorial though. It definitely would have been far more helpful for beginners. Im still learning how to set these up as I make them though!

    really interesting video! lots of helpful information. Although I'm a bit confused with your statement about tris at 8:17, why should they always have a pair? Why is that important? I tried looking for more information elsewhere but couldn't find anything.

    • @illusionofmana
      @illusionofmana  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh yeah good question! There's this important thing in 3D modeling called topology, essentially the topology needs to always be uniform. This is mainly to help with textures, UV mapping, and even rigging and animation. An odd triangle in a mesh's topology can make UV unwrapping very difficult and cause textures to warp in ways that are undesirable. It can also cause shapes to deform in unexpected or undesirable ways when animating too (specially with low poly).
      I hope I was able to answer your question.

      I sure hope so! I kind of need to if I want to keep this tutorial stuff up. I'm trained in Autodesk Maya and could probably whip out a tutorial on rigging for that in no time... But Blender is going to take me a bit to translate those processes over and render out a good tutorial for it.
