- In this episode we discuss what our vegan daughter eats, from birth to 20 months old. We live in a "mixed diet" household, and so some negotiation and compromise is necessary.

More about the video:
When she was an infant, Ruby drank breast milk supplemented with soy formula. We introduced solid foods around five months. Now as a toddler, she eats a wide variety of stuff, including rice & beans, hummus, sweet potato, baked tofu, quinoa, lentils, vegan mac & cheese, and green smoothies. We supplement her diet with a vegan multivitamin made by NovaFerrum. - Навчання та стиль
Hey gang, we put chapter markers in the description if you want to skip around to different topics. We also added links to a few of the products we discussed in the video. Hope this is helpful 💜 D + L
Babies shouldn't eat rice because of arsenic, please research it!
Not related, but just wanted to say that The Clovehitch Killer was very good!
I think she'll be more likely to be upset about being fed animals and animal products than she would be upset about not having them.
After watching a few of your videos, it seems like the "vegan" in this relationship is an appologist for non-vegans than he is an advocate.
6:16 how I respond to most wfpb meals
Tell me you’re vegan without telling me you’re vegan...
“I have a subscription to a bean club”
🥇 👏
its the new hype . make insecure meat eater consider veganims more by joking and downgrading veganism.
then one they try a bit, boom they realise the truths surrounding it more.
im surprised alot of people are into the fake antivegan lately
OMG I wish Ireland had a bean club : )
I really love how you guys prioritize bonding moments, from a developmental perspective kids won’t understand all the impacts of vegan vs not vegan food, but she could learn food insecurity or become self conscious about what she eats if you guys were constantly over her shoulder, making her feel excluded or shamed when small slip ups are made which can contribute to an ED later in life.
need the video for cleaning the smoothie packs! :)
This kid eats a bigger variety of food than I do. I wish my parents fed me stuff like this when I was a kid.
😂😂 no trust his kid will grow up with so much problems and bad jawline , they need to eat meat and eggs and nutrients rich foods, our ancestors ate meat and fruits not fucking greens
@@chasegainsovahoes663 nah, our ancestors primarily ate greens, fruits, seeds, later grains. Meat was an occasional thing (hunting is difficult, later harvesting animals was expensive). There are some specific cultures with more meat consumption but mostly plant based diet was the norm for most of human evolution,
Be your own parent, feed yourself all the food.
Your flexibility will be the best thing for Ruby as she explores her world and grows up to make her own decisions. So many parents are tyrants and children either grow up unable to make choices or they just rebel and go the opposite way when they are out from under their parents thumbs. Great job, y'all!
Should I give my child the choice to smoke meth? Just curious what parenting advice you have for me.
@@flavioespanol8868 It was not advice, dear. It was encouragement. Big difference.
@@ambercunningham5693 can you answer the question?
@@flavioespanol8868 you can't seriously be comparing allowing your children to try drugs with allowing them to try different types of food. A mess.
@@hiiif2470 letting your child pay for the torture of animals, actually
I find it so refreshing to see an outlook on raising a mostly vegan kid without that "all or nothing" attitude I find toxic within the vegan community. I fully understand why veganism is an "all or nothing" movement, but when your partner isn't vegan (mine isn't), it's healthy to find a balance between you both, and I think you two are nailing it! This is inspiring. Thank you!
Well its is a standard of ethics. So its about consistency in not causing harm or causing the least amount of harm possible where practicable.
@@marley7659 Oh, I definitely understand that. There's no argument against it, really.
Well, if all or nothing is not your type you shouldn't be a vegan. Vegetarian, pescatarian or something else would be better.
All or nothing? animal abuse yes I'm totally against abuse!!!
stopped by like 3 years later and yes this is still my favorite youtube channel
Ending up tearing up at the end, because of all the love you both have for Ruby. Very conscious 🙏
Oh my gosh Ruby is AMAZING! You can see her personality for sure. Looks like a mix of mom and dad. Life is FUN at your house. Thanks for the video. I have a 3yr old granddaughter that eats vegan, just like Ruby. She also has no friends due to Covid.... so Grandpa and Grandma came down to play for the winter!! Oh and guess what! Grandpa is moving on over to liking vegan food!
So good to see you all doing so well! I am so proud of you both you’ve really come into your own and your amazing teamwork as parents is inspiring!!! Sending you all love from NH! 💗💚💙
That child has the best childhood. Healthy and balanced. She’s very cute and seems, like you said, super smart.
Ruby is getting so big!! It's so nice to see her eating such a wide variety of foods - thank you for all this info, I'm going to file it away for future reference 👶 Love you all! 💕
The very first vegan I met was an infant under one year. I was a preschool teacher who switched to an infant room. His parents were vegan and sent only vegan food for him. I knew they steamed, baked, blended and preppped many foods for him. It was a real eye opener, especially to see his hunger level. We often had to ask his parents to send in greater volume. It wasn't until I began eating and learning about whole food plant based eating that I really understood nutrient density verses caloric density. I am glad this little boy and his parents showed me a way of eating that was foreign and new to me. I didn't go WFPB until a year later when my blood pressure and cholesterol put my body at risk for disease (and medication, no thanks). I enjoyed your video so much. I wish I had been vegan when my children were little. Ruby's acceptance of many foods is fun to see.
Loved this video and love you three!! Wish you made more videos , I really enjoy your comments. Love that Liz is flexible and does what makes her happy and that Duncan is no over powering. You guys are doing a great job!! Ruby is the best and super adorable! Thanks for the new vid!
OMG I was just binge-watching all of your videos last night, wishing you guys would post soon and I wake up to this🙏🙏😭Missed u guys!
Thank you guys for posting this! Much love to you & your beautiful family! ❤
I think your channel was one of the first I found when going vegan. I love your flexibility. I'm vegan (other than honey), my husband and step daughter are not. Your dynamic is one I respect. I'm never going to be the vegan that preaches and shames others, I do what I can to accommodate myself and know that I can sleep at night knowing I haven't eaten anything that caused harm. I loved this video. I wish more people took your approach of health, compromise, and flexibility.
I'm never going to be the human rights advocate that preaches for human rights.
Honey isn’t vegan
@@writerchik44 what would you rather they called themself? a vegetarian wouldn’t be correct either. i eat no animal products except honey and i still consider myself vegan. for me veganism is about making ethical choices for the planet and for animals and after doing my own research i don’t think eating honey is morally wrong. but to each their own. if someone would rather i call myself plantbased then go ahead. for me it’s about the choices i make that i believe are right, not what label someone would rather i use
@@user-bc4es6uq8m well if you still think taking things needlessly from others is ok you are a speciesist and not vegan.
@@user-bc4es6uq8m then you aren't vegan. Bees usually eat their own honey and the people that farm them replace their honey with cheap white sugar. It is exploitation.
LOVE seeing Ruby eating all that good food. She is adorable and you guys have a great flexible attitude toward her diet. Feeding a baby can be one of the most stressful parts of parenting, so it is nice to see your laid back approach.
Thank you so much for this video!! I’m due June 3rd with our first child and we want to raise him vegan. This was super helpful and I align so much with all of your values/caveats going in! Ruby is adorable. Great content as usual 😊
Great video love the laid back approach to raising Ruby!
Love you're videos every single time. Thanks for what you do
I love this video. Ruby is adorable. I miss your videos and was happy to see one this morning.
This was great! Thank you :) we're a vegan/nonvegan household with non vegan families and are considering having our first kiddo. This really helped on where to start and an example of a concise way on explaining it to family members.
Your videos always bring a smile to my face! 💛 I love your approach to (vegan) parenting, it's rational, pragmatic and always puts Ruby's wellbeing first.
Also good luck with your move, I hope everything goes well 💓
Always the best videos. Beautiful parents and the most joyful child. Incredible job in teaching her about food and taking incredible care of her.
Loved it! And love how Ruby gets to experience PITZA. Yup, I got the picture, sending it over to Duncan to prove his point from years ago!
I’m so glad to see your all doing so well love your approach it’s so refreshing the world needs more people like your guys hater gone hate liz 🥰👏🏻
I can’t wait to see the video on how to clean the reusable smoothie bags!!!
Love this, thanks for sharing! We have a 7 month old and are taking the same approach. It was interesting to see you offer Ruby smoothies, I hadn't thought of that but will try it for my daughter this week I think :)
As always such a great video!!! I love you guys! Goodies for Ruby are coming your way! For you two too! xoxoxox
Fantastic video! Thank you for sharing.
Loved this video!! You guys are doing a great job :)
I SO admire what you guys have done with Ruby! Sharing food as a family, being flexible for the sake of family bonding, not being dogmatic with her about food, etc. I hope my husband and I are half as good with our future kids as you guys are with yours! It seems like having/raising Ruby has also had a positive impact on your relationship as a couple related to food. Love to see it!
Ruby is SO adorable! I think you guys are doing a great job with the foods you (Ruby) selects. I love your videos!
I love that you are not making a big deal out of food and are feeding Ruby what you eat. You are blessed to have a child who doesn't seem to have eating issues. Children with ADHD often have issues with texture, temperature and subtle flavor differences between different brands. I'm so glad you're not struggling with these issues.
I sent this vid to my bf and said "that's the drill, baby!" bc OH MY what a perfect balanced meal plan for Ruby! she seems really sweet and happy. congrats on the fam!
Awesome video! You can tell how much you love Ruby and care for her well being. You have a beautiful family, congratulations! :)
I love seeing your videos on Ruby. Liz and I were pregnant about the same time, my child will be 2 next month. Eevee and I eat vegan while Dad is mostly vegan (=
I agree with not putting a lot of pressure during meal time. Right now i place their food down and they will come and grab some when ready. Glad to see you’re all healthy! Miss your videos but understand how hectic life is with a toddler.
Very informative. Thanks!
Guys !! your the best!!! What a great video!! And what an amazing parents you guys are!! Baby Robbi looks just like her beautiful mommy♡ keep on the good work! Much love from Israel ♡♡♡
I have been following your channel since I started dating my non-vegan partner years ago. I am now pregnant with our first child and I love your realistic view of raising a kiddo.
Hey you two!! You're making such wise choices with Ruby's diet, in my opinion. It's exactly what I would do, and very well thought out. I especially love how you are being intentional about food being good, and not to give her hangups about eating. Also love your attention to not over-controlling her and letting her have bonding moments with non-vegan family over food. This is how you instill a healthy relationship with food at an early age, and I applaud you!!
Liz, I am the same as you now. I eat salmon occasionally and eggs from my brother's garden, but I'm mostly vegan still. Once in a while I will have a little dairy when I'm out at a restaurant or with others in a family gathering. I found being so rigidly vegan was causing me stress and impacting my mental health and relationships, so decided to let the label (and the incessant label reading) go. Hope you're all doing well, hugs :)
You are so incredibly lucky! Our 16 month old is so picky now despite being constantly exposed to all foods from 6 months. Go Ruby!
Good job guys! So level headed.
this was so cute
I miss you guys! When your video popped up I watched it as soon as I could. Thanks for the wonderful update on your family.
I have a 2 year old grand daughter who loves her vegetables and fruits but her parents aren’t vegan so I do only what I can do...Love her and give her a snack of soba noodles and edamame. It’s a lot of fun to watch!
Keep those videos coming!
This is so informational! Thanks! Remember to soak and wash your rice, especially brown rice, to remove some of the arsenic
I havent seen your channel in awhile! Im so glad to see you guys got married. I remember there was a lot of hatred for the mixed diet relationship and people wanting you guys to breakup.
This was an absolutely delightful video! Also super helpful, me and my non-vegan partner are thinking about having kids in the near future and this video is full of great tips. Ruby is so stinking cute and looks like such a happy little kid. Glad to see you all are doing well :) 💗
EXTREMELY MINDFUL parenting. Love it
Loved this vid! Just had a little babe in a hybrid vegan/Omni household too!!❤️ just ordered the pouches!!🤗
Great video! Good job with ruby!
This was great! I'm the only vegetarian in my family and this gives me some great ideas of how we can start to feed our baby soon with mixed variety of diet
Appreciate, and respect your balance, and reasons for it ❤️
My kids are 21 & 16 years old 😳 (Where did the time go...)
I was vegetarian since the early 90's, and through pregnancy, and raised them as such.
But, also never stressed if they went Grandparent's, and had some meat, when they were younger.
Went vegan myself in 2008, and always was the same way with them, even after that -
Nowadays... My oldest is like Liz, will eat some fish once in awhile, and maybe some dairy, eggs.
16 year old, does a little dairy, for example: If there's egg/cheese in a vegetarian sausage/burger, or pesto, or something like that when she's out to eat.
She still says she wished I'd gone vegan sooner, and raised her totally vegan lol ❤️
Both are incredibly strong, intelligent, and HAPPY individuals ❤️ Can't ask for more that that!
We love, and respect each other, I'm happy to maintain my *mostly* vegan household 🤗
Yay!!!! Another video!!!
So loving and well-balanced x I've learnt a little about being less militant
Ah! I requested this video when you guys did a live!
I love your flexibility on Ruby’s diet. I have an 2 yr old and 6 yr old and we’re basically doing things similarly. At home we’re vegan but when we’re at extended family she can have a few bites of whatever they’re having. Only a few bites because I’ve found their GI tracts aren’t use to dairy. Nonetheless I think it sets them up for a healthy relationship with food and trust between us.
Great video. Your baby is so cute. You have the right approach
Love that she eats with her hands😍😍
Registered Dietitian approved 👍🏼😊
Oh my goodness! She is absolutely adorable
appreciate this!
amazing parents!
This is such a great video! We are in a similar situation: vegan mom, omni dad. Our little girl is only 6 months, so we will see how it goes. I reeeaally hope she will be a happy all foods lover just like Ruby. Would love to see more like this!
Ruby is such a good eater!! 🌱 She's Liz's 'minnie me'. Too cute!! 🥰
This was the cutest video ever 🥰
Well done. Guys I’m not vegan but I did try it for 6 months (not out of conviction, more for health) but I just didn’t feel optimal. I may have done it wrong, nevertheless I found you guys during that time and I love love love your channel. I try lots of recipes you guys post but ultimately I’m here for the open mindedness, the approach, the information and the cinematography. I love everything about your channel and ruby is a wonderful little soul. Many blessings to you guys.
Did you ever try tracking your diet or inserting frequent meals into a nutrition app like chronometer? It can be a helpful tool for beginner vegans to gage what vitamins/minerals/macros they might be missing. When I was starting out, tracking some of my meals helped me get a big picture idea of my nutrients and I realized I wasn’t getting enough calcium. Of course tracking can lead to disordered eating, so don’t use if that’s a worry! You gotta eat what makes you feel your best 😊 becoming vegan is reteaching yourself how to eat. it’s a long process & not accessible to everyone
Optimal??? So you find killing animals optimal?
You're doing a great job! I follow Ellyn Satter Division of Responsibility and it helps so much with my fears.
Wow I am almost in tears, this beautiful was SO beautifully done. You are such a beautiful family ❤️ It’s amazing to be a part of your growth!
cute kiddo, thanks for sharing.
You are doing an awesome job guys! I have 2 toddlers and their vegan at home but at Grandmas they eat what they eat. But guess what? They prefer their vegan food!
excess sugar early on in life /can/ lead to obesity BUT findings suggest the presence of sugar in early life indicate there are bigger environmental influences that would lead to obesity. I wouldn’t sweat it liz but cutting back on sugar is good in general.
Nice video you three😊! Being vegan is old anyways, I now classify myself as plant based! I agree with your dieting views for Ruby, some of those vegan products like cheese/cream cheese contain unhealthy ingredients. It makes me wonder if eating regular products are not healthier🤔.
I’m not a vegan, or even vegetarian for that matter, and not sure how this got on my recommendations. I watched though because your babe is darling and y’all are funny. 😂❤️
Wow you guys are so nice and reasonable how refreshing
Your baby is so cute!! 😍
I had my baby back in the beginning of the pandemic. I couldn't produce breast milk, and soy formula was hard to find, so I had to put the baby on dairy formula. When I finally tried soy formula about 3 months in and, he was having digestive issues with it. I wanted to be a hippy vegan mom, but it just didn't happen for me. I judged other people's lifestyle before I had a kid, but I learned my lesson when nothing went as planned. :-)
Ruby seems like she is a great eater!! I'm jealous! My baby mostly wants to eat fruit (but at least his preference is healthy).
OH SO CUTE. Ruby looks just like Liz!!!
Holy shit! You're both still together and have a baby!? Congrats!!! Maybe love is real lol
This is so lovely. We are very similar in our style. Duncan, have you made a video where you talk about your reasoning for going vegan and your history with that? Just curious!
I've been thinking about a video related to that topic for a while. Thanks for the comment.
Such a cutie! And your approach is awesome. No stress, do your best. She looks like a happy healthy little kid with some neato parents that have her back. NO HATE LIZ, you do you, but I would suggest watching Seaspiracy before your next seafood meal.
Great video! She's adorable :)
Great video--love you guys. Would you be willing to make a video about your thoughts on pet-keeping? Do you feel like kids should grow up with animals/pets? Thank you!
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure we have enough to say about that topic to justify a video, but I can give you a quick answer. Neither of us wants to get a pet. Liz is allergic to cats and I don't like having fur around the house. I grew up with dogs and cats out in the country and have mostly good memories. The only thing I can say for sure is that I would never recommend pets in cages or containers. They just seem miserable.
Omg at 6:07 ruby is LIZ!!!! So freaky. Also this is so helpful since my partner isn’t vegan 💜 much love to you 3!!!
I love to see you guys. Ruby is growing so fast and you two look like awesome parents. More videos please.
You have such a beautiful family! Missed your videos, so it's good to see you all again. :)
She is adorable!
Y’all seem a lot happier
As a vegan in a relationship with a non-vegan person it can definitely be difficult sometimes...specially my feelings when my bf is eating non-vegan things, as this makes me feel bad. He is mainly vegan now but still eats sometimes non-vegan things. Your videos give me hope that it can work and that we can in the future have a baby and make it work in our own way. I would like to know how Duncan feels or copes with Liz eating non-vegan stuff as this is something particularly difficult for me and his insights could be useful. Well done for raising Ruby. She is a happy healthy child.
I would like to make a video that addresses that question, but the short answer is that I discovered my own boundaries and communicated them. For example I'm okay if she eats cheese once in a while, but I can't handle if she eats bacon. We figured that out together and came to an agreement. Of course Liz is free to do whatever she wants, but I'm also free to peace out if I don't like it. Well, less so now. That's why it's important to work out this stuff before having a kid.
@@soyouredatingavegan Thank you for your answer. I think that a lot of us here are in this position and sometimes feel frustrated. It would be awesome if you make a video about this. Lots of love
What? Where have I been?
You all have a baby, CONGRATS
Ruby is so dang cute! And I generally dislike tiny people.. 😉
I wouldn't mind if you also fed me.
Ditto
Thank God!
Wow nice kid. Hard to eat healthy and diverse at a small college in an oil town. Yeah Vitamin D is import to supplement with everyone. I have mine in my "milk".
You guys are doing so great. Also I was sever at Olive Garden for three years and I’d say 9/10 kids would ask me to have a side of olives to snack on!!!
Having raised a child as a vegetarian with a non vegetarian and going vegan with a meat eating teen in the house, my only regret is not telling my son from a young age WHY we don't eat animals.
Being a vegan single mom, I didn't allow non vegan products in the house unless he purchased something with his allowance. He is making his own food choices now, being a freshman in college and they are not the choices I would have hoped for. Eating animals is too normalized (I partly have his dad to thank for that, always poking fun, ugh) and cheese addiction is a real thing, sadly.
Anyhow, raising a kid is hard. No matter how you do it and yall are doing a BEAUTIFUL job raising sweet Ruby. I always say that I wish they came with a manual. Looking back, I only wish I had had more of a dialog with him, with the family, with the daycare etc. I did always send him with a bagged lunch though.
My kids love the olives and sauerkraut but now at 3 my toddler is more picky. My almost 5 yr old eats everything, we can usually talk her into eating it because it helps her to grow. Lol
I've been vegan for 6 years now but when my children were small, I was mostly vegetarian. I had read that dairy could lead to problems so I didn't use milk for my children. Fruits, legumes, veggies and whole grain food were staples. My children were so healthy that one childminder in their kindergarten was kind of disappointed. One day she said: 'Your children are never sick!' Usually, most children had a cold very often and had to stay at home. My two didn't. :D
That's one cute little girl!
