"You can have a good time in your head. It doesn't have to be hell." Something I didn't even know I badly needed to hear. This is only the third video of yours I've watched but you're already teaching me more healthy coping mechanisms than I learned in 3 years of therapy in my teens.

I never understood imposter syndrome until today. I cried because I feel like I don’t deserve my current job and soon they’ll find out I really can’t do graphic design and print jobs. The evident success exercise is a really good idea because it forces me to think about what I can do, what my strengths are, and how I can use that to my advantage. I’ll be sure to do this often, and it’ll probably even help me sleep better at night.

Oh yes, agreed. I think some stuff geared toward younger people would be amazing. It's so much more helpful to learn these kinds of things when you're still growing and learning about yourself in the formative years than when those negative ideas have sort of cemented. You have to use much more effort to break through when you're older and the negative thoughts feel like facts. I'm sure it would be helpful to kids and teens to see this.

I'm South African and I've been following you for a couple months. Initially found you while searching for art videos, but I really enjoy the diversity of your content. I'm a lifelong quadriplegic (I have cerebral palsy) and because I'm goal-oriented and stubborn, people tend to call me inspirational. I cringe inwardly every time, because my imposter syndrome is like, "You've fooled all these people and you don't deserve their praise."
So yeah, this was a very relatable video. Keep 'em coming.

    • @thecurrentmoment
      @thecurrentmoment 3 роки тому +4

I find a lot of people also idealise people that they are inspired by. Idealisation, as well as objectification, is one way people can (inadvertently) dehumanise other people.
So that awestruck feeling you pick up from other people may also be because you think that they are not seeing the real you, I.e. they don't see you as a real person, I.e. dehumanising you. At least, that may be your perception.
Of course, maybe they do see you as a real person and that's why they are inspired. Often the most inspirational people are people that others can relate to, while still doing something those people admire and aspire to

I just want to let you know I keep coming back to this video. I have actually been doing this exercise (both part 1 and part 2) everyday since December. The best part is looking through all the reasons from part 2 when you're dealing with impostor syndrome.
When we're dealing with negative emotions, it can consume all our focus and we tend to forget the good things that happened, even if it was just yesterday. Reminding yourself all the good you did previously really helps you feel a lot better about yourself.
I REALLY RECOMMEND THIS EXERCISE TO EVERYONE

Omg thank you so much!!! I have 3 essays due and grades are in today and a part of why I’ve been struggling is because my professor keeps describing my essays as “thoroughly excellent“ or the best essay he’s read on that topic or the best he’s received by far from the class/whole course and is constantly talking about how high my writing quality is so now whenever I’m writing these I’m so stressed about whether or not it will fit his standards or he’ll be like “oh man guess you actually kinda suck” because I feel like those were really flukes and not even of my doing and all of my current pieces are so bad they’re not even close to even being passable (and actually thank you for all the videos like this that you make -I’ve rewatched & sent the perfectionism one to so many of my friends who now constantly refer to it when speaking about how they managed to get something done and find it super helpful!!)

I'll not lie. This video absolutely made me cry, BUT NOT IN A BAD WAY. I've, without a doubt, beaten myself down for years, despite so many good things and people coming into my life. It's gone on so long that I fear the negative image of myself is starting to become the image that others see in me, rather than the me they used to see. I've literally hated everything about myself for so long, even though I tried to do something about it. Doing these excercises may just be what I needed, even if they're just a nudge in the right direction.
And yes, absolutely, keep doing these types of videos. You, your content, and everything you put out is amazing. Don't let anyone, or yourself, let you think otherwise.

I am a teacher. I know I am a good teacher: I am dedicated, efficient, and truly care about my students. However, when a parent tells me any of this, I have the same reaction; that I have tricked them into believing I am a good teacher. I first discovered the term imposter syndrome a few years ago, and it is quite hard to live with. I have no idea who you are, or why this suddenly showed up in my feed, but this was amazing. I’ve been “healing myself” for a few years, but I have never heard something so simple, yet amazingly powerful. Thank you, whoever you are 😅

Hope you continue the series, it's really helpful! Though I've done therapy, sometimes a practical tip coming from someone who is experiencing the same is more helpful than a vague exercise. As an animator struggling with similar issues to you, some of the subjects you've made videos about have really helped. You find a very concise way to phrase things that make stuff click better for me and have a very refreshing perspective. It's therapeutic in a way to find a channel that very openly discusses things I'm dealing with. "If the goal is noble, your commitment to the goal should not be contingent on your ability to attain it, and in pursuit of our goal, we must release our rigid assumptions about how we must achieve it. Peace and equanimity come from letting go of our attachment to the goal and the method. That is the essence of acceptance.
Reflecting on this seeming paradox, of pursuing a goal yet with no attachment to its outcome, Jinpa explained to me that there is an important insight. This is a deep recognition that while each of us should do everything we can to realize the goal we seek, whether or not we succeed often depends on many factors beyond our control. So our responsibility is to pursue the goal with all the dedication we can muster, do the best we can but not become fixated on a preconceived notion of a result. Sometimes, actually quite often, our efforts lead to an unexpected outcome that might even be better than what we originally had in mind.

I'm in the process of transitioning from a Graphic Designer to a full time artist, and I really wished this video existed when I first decided to pursue a creative career! This was absolutely incredible, and it makes me feel so much better to know that Imposter Syndrome comes with the territory and that there are ways to live with it! Thank you!!

I love everything that you shared. The shit and diamonds metaphor is amazing, you nailed that feeling! I am passing the exercise on to participants of an online yoga retreat I'm co-hosting tomorrow and have already sent this video off to many people. Thank you SO much for these videos focused on mental health!

Your videos changed my life. I cannot thank you enough. I'm doing art on a regular basis and adjusting to the compliments and support people are giving me.
You can't use imposter syndrome to cheat yourself out of this one... it was the fact you went through what you did and shared it with me through youtube that helped me. You showed me being open and being yourself is a worthy thing to be. You showed me consistency will lead to improvement through your own uploads. You spoke to me like a human being worthy of help. You taught me not to give a fuck about certain aspects of creativity. You told me how to focus. You told me how to share. You told me how to live.
All facts. No metaphor. No hyperbole.
The biggest thing you taught me though... to support other people. You indirectly lift yourself up by lifting up others. It reinforces everything. It brings me joy to share your videos with others that I know suffering from these same hardships in life.
Just keep being you, it's working. :)

I once heard somewhere that if you feel the imposter syndrome, try to look at it at a diff light and think "hey, i bullshitted this so well that people actually see the value in my work!"

Please continue with this type of video. I've been straight journaling for years before finding bullet journaling. I've tried to get answers to my questions but usually I'm hear "it's your journal. Unless you plan on sharing on social media, do what you want." You have explained so much in the few videos I've watched, I feel invigorated and can't wait to put pen to paper. Please continue to share your wisdom and story. Congratulations on your sobriety. Be safe.

I was the scapegoat of my family. I can't stress how much of a degenerate I feel like, though I just celebrated my 6th year at a law firm, have a beautiful and intelligent daughter, own my house, work my ass off... You get the idea. I'm not a degenerate. I will start doing this, for real you helped me with an actual strategy. The self help stuff on UA-cam is incredibly insightful but what you just provided is actually going to help me work towards how I want to live my life. Thank you. ❤

For the last few years, I've been struggling with Imposter Syndrome in my work, resulting in me being jobless right now, and Self-Sabotage in my romantic relationships. I've been going to counselling for over a year now and although my head-space isn't nearly as dangerous as it had been, I have never been able to push past Imposter Syndrome in particular. Plus, most "motivational, life coach" channels are people who I can't relate to, who seem to be outside looking in at saying "well, all you need to do is feel better about yourself"
Thank you so much for tackling the issues that so many people wrestle with in a relatable, genuine way. One of the worst things about having something like Imposter Syndrome is going day to day, looking around and wondering if other people feel the way you feel, or if they're just letting you be inadequate because they pity you, or if you're secretly on the autism spectrum and no one will tell you but it's obvious to everyone else but you. It's so isolating and frightening.
Your videos are solidarity, and I don't feel so afraid to push back against these things anymore. Because I want to be successful and happy!

I discovered your channel today and are watching a lot of videos of your advice. I am going to therapy since 9 years and you summed up the advice I got from there very very good. I am writing a journal and are taking your videos as an example to write down ideas on how to handle my everyday in the future. I also want to create videos but I am totally lost with my criticism at the moment and I am paralysed. But watching your videos seem to me you talk out loud my thoughts. It is very comforting to watch your videos. Thank you for your inspiration.

I found your videos through the UA-cam algorithm and I'm really happy I did. It's funny because when you do these mental health videos they're pretty much a lot of the things my therapists say and for some reason them saying it just doesn't click in? but when you say it you kind of bring it down to Earth and take that step to actually educate me about it in a non-clinical way and I really appreciate that. I think a lot of the time while I could be learning this through a CBT course or some shit it just doesn't click because it's so dry and clinical and unhuman. I felt really negative about this idea that you can just change yourself by speaking in the mirror and telling yourself you're a good person. Well those feelings don't go away entirely, I'm really glad you took the time to make a video about the method and adding that "because" behind it. I'm also really glad that somehow I had the same foresty metaphor you had except a whole lot less Australian. Please keep up the good work - surprisingly you've become one of the reasons I feel a little more comfortable trying to change and be better.

Your videos are honestly the BOMB! Honestly the way you craft information to make your case effective, clear and concise is just brilliant. Tons more useful than half the stuff I just watched on UA-cam where I felt like people just talked on the subject without really motivating change and nothing actually affected my perspective. You’re a perspective changer and a scientist! Thanks!

Great video. Question 5 was answered in the 1950s by the grandfather of personal psychology, Carl Rogers. The core belief causing human suffering (and imposter syndrome) is the belief that your worth as a person depends on what you do. That your worth is conditional. When you change that belief, imposter syndrome just falls away, leaving you free. X

I just found your channel and I am instantly a "true fan"! Sunday, I was feeling pretty sad (my basement is water damaged and my dog is dying) so I gave myself permission to spend the whole day curled up on the couch: reading, knitting, listening to podcasts, watching UA-cam, and not feeling compelled to achieve anything. At some point during the day, I ran across one of your videos. After watching it, more appeared in my feed. By evening I was binge-watching your videos. I did not do any of the journalling exercises (remember how I set out to achieve nothing) but plan to circle back to them. I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty, and you are spot on with so many of the things you share (I am a certified wellness coach and a card-carrying self-improvement junkie), but you add your own spin to make the concepts seem fresh. I am looking forward to following your journey!

Thanks for doing the mental health videos. It doesn't matter if the material you cover is well-known in certain circles, for me (and I'm guessing lots of others) it's important and more impactful to hear that it works from a real person instead of reading it from a book or website. I appreciate you.

I have so much love and deep respect for what you're doing and why you're doing it because this is the quiet revolution of our generation and those previous to us. 2020 (ongoing) has been the year of realizing and then undoing our trauma and negative belief patterns which is catalyzing self love. The process of understanding all dimensions of ourselves is also known as shadow work--bringing awareness (light) to the unconscious. You're healing the collective with this work.
Not only that, but hearing these practices detailed in the way that I do the inner work myself and being given a guideline to do it is immensely helpful. So much of what you express is pertinent to my own artist's journey. Gratitude deep, dear one.

I'm beyond grateful for coming across your channel and your content. I've always hung out with "artsy" people but never considered myself one. For some fccked up reason I felt like all my friends had more of a right to express themselves creatively, while I held myself back. Spent most of my 20's partying that led to trouble with the law. That led to depression then finally realizing depression isn't going to pay the bills piling up. I took up a job with a childhood friend who is a well known street artist out here in L.A. and that just messed with my head so bad. Feeding that Imposter Syndrome monster so much. I had to resign, aside from it also being a toxic environment. Here I am, 31, finding comfort in your videos and building courage to go back to Art school (I need that self validation of obtaining that degree, what I'll do with is who knows) and just push myself to take a dive into the mass ocean of the internet. Thank you and I hope you continue to create videos like these!

This is so true. For those who feel discouraged by the idea that it takes so long, keep in mind that you’ll make progress every day. I started journaling daily on November 1 last year, so I’ve been doing that for 13+ months now. After a month or two I noticed that how I journaled (in my case I journaled in the voice of an encouraging parent, writing about my struggles and what I was doing well, how I was improving, and if I had a bad day trying to point out how I handled it well i.e. I meditated, I didn’t panic as much as I would have before) or just simply comforting myself, telling myself it’s ok and no matter what I’m here and I love you). When I noticed it was working it was such an encouragement to keep it up. I’ve never managed to keep a diary or journal for more than a few weeks before, and just noticing the effect on my thinking has kept me going for this long and will keep me going, there’s no endpoint for me, because it works and because of that I’m glad to do it. Find the way of writing that works for you. Another example I know is Elizabeth Gilbert, she talks about how she writes herself letters from love daily as her own therapy, and it taught her to love herself unconditionally which is so important. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
