The Great Turkish War: Every Five Days

  • Since the 16th Century, the Hapsburgs and and Ottomans had been locked in a bitter struggle for dominance in Hungary. In 1683, the stagnating Ottoman Empire launches one last assault against Vienna. The resulting conflict would once and for all determine the fate of Hungary.Meanwhile, in the west, France was becoming increasingly aggressive towards the German princes and Spain, triggering a separate conflict to ultimately decide the power balance of Europe in the decades to come. After the war, The aggressiveness of Louis XIV of France was caped, notwithstanding France remained Europe's greatest military power. The relationship between England and the Netherlands was cemented further following the Glorious Revolution, and Savoy began to make its mark as a key second-rate power. War would again erupt just a few months later after the Death of Charles II of Spain, beginning the War of the Spanish Succession.

      This war: France vs Austria and Netherlands. Lui XIV used Ottomans, Wilhelm used England, germans and slavs. Lui was fighting with the whole european might pretty succesfully. +Юлиан Гантман Ah awesome! Well the name does indeed derive from a Germanic root I'm told, with "Holodwig" being the oldest form attributed to Louis, so naturally becoming Louis in french and remaining Ludwig in german. Which is certainly logical as the french Kings were mostly Frankish, and therefore Germanic in culture.

    The Poles literally saved the Austrian Habsburgs (and the rest of Europe) in this war.... 100 years on the Germans paid their debt back to Poles by partitioning Poland with Russia. Poetic justice it seems. Even more ironic, the Ottoman Empire was the only power in Europe to not recognise this partitioning. Funny old world...

    • @abloodorange5233
      @abloodorange5233 3 роки тому +15

      Yes it was advantageous for the ottomans to have a Poland to weaken the German states and russia

    • @yunusakgul2047
      @yunusakgul2047 3 роки тому +36

      Poland was a kind of buffer zone between Germans and Russia for the Ottoman imperial policy. The role of Poland was being strong enough to stop both HRE and Russia. That's why Ottoman Empire didn't recognize the partition of Poland. Time has proved the logic of their way of thinking about Poland. However, in the 17th century, events like Polish intervention in Moldovian Magnate Wars, Cossack raids in the Black Sea hinterland, and Ottoman expansion in Podolia ruined relationships between Poland and Ottomans. This lead to Polish help for HRE in Vienna and Holy League wars and its long-term consequences became disastrous.
      Btw the role of Poland in the Battle of Vienna might be one of the most overrated things in history because of romanticized "Winged Hussars arrived" thing. Only 1/3 of the allied army was Polish and de facto commander of army was the Duke of Lorraine, Jon Sobieski was de jure commander of the army because of his title. as a king. So, Germans didn't have so much debt to Poland for this victory.
      There are also several things we shouldn't forget about this battle. Most of the Janissaries were in the trenches during the battle as siege continued(terrible tactical mistake for the Ottoman side). Tatars were sent to inner parts of Austria for raid so Ottoman side didn't have enough cavalry to secure the flanks against enemy cavalry(another mistake). Lastly, Ottoman army did't capture some fortresses between their border and Vienna because Ottoman Grand Vizier didn't even think about possibility of defeat so he didn't think about securing the withdraw. (This one isn't a tactical mistake but it's a strategical mistake. Stupid Kara Mustafa Pasha

    If Vienna fell, the whole world would be different
    The fall of Constantinople could not be compared to the fall of the Hapsburg Austrians. Byzantium was no longer a major power in Europe, it was a shadow of it's former glory. The Austrians on the other hand were achieving their goals on becoming a great power which they succeeded to be for a long time until WW1.
    Let's say that the Ottomans did seize Vienna. The Seat of the Hapsburg monarchy which would later lead to the complete occupation of all of Austria. The German Princes would be surrounded from the West to the East by the French and the Turks which could have lead to the portioning of Central Europe. The fall of the Hapsburg monarchy could lead to a power vacuum Central Europe.
    The fall of the Austrians could mean that the Ottomans would have stayed in Europe longer. The whole history of Europe would be changed. The Austro Hungarians would not be in a future world war. The stage of power would make the Ottoman Empire would not only assert the fact that the Ottomans were a Great Power but a Superpower.
    Also, Europe alone did not defeat the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans were occupied on other fronts in Persia, Egyptian and Arab nationalism, naval supremacy in the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans, and African kingdoms.

Our great siege engines showed everyone that great walls can't protect anyone. Even in Empire's dark days, we remembered it and find power in ourselves. 1.
    For the Kebabs: Combine lamb with 7.5 grams (about 2 teaspoons) kosher salt, 1 teaspoon cumin, 2 teaspoons sumac, and 1 tablespoon pepper flakes. Knead by hand or in a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment until mixture turns tacky and starts sticking to the side of the bowl. Add water and continue kneading until incorporated. Place in refrigerator and chill well.
    2.
    Meanwhile, combine remaining teaspoon cumin, 2 teaspoons sumac, remaining tablespoon pepper flakes, and 2 teaspoons salt in a small bowl. Set spice mixture aside. Combine remaining 2 teaspoons sumac and red onions in a medium bowl. Season with salt to taste and set aside.
    3.
    Using wet hands, divide lamb mixture into 12 even balls. Using wet hands, form each ball into a long, flat kebab around a skewer.
    4.
    Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all the charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange the coals on one side of the charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Alternatively, set half the burners on a gas grill to the highest heat setting, cover, and preheat for 10 minutes. Clean and oil the grilling grate. Place kebabs directly over hot side of grill, cover, and cook, turning occasionally and sprinkling with spice mixture until well charred on both sides and kebabs are cooked through, about 12 minutes total.
    5.
    During last few minutes of cooking, place bread directly on top of kebabs in batches until heated through.
    6.
    Serve kebabs with warm bread, sumac onions, parsley, tomatoes, and pickled peppers.

      Because France had a huge population and army. In 1683, there were around 320,000 soldiers in the French Army, in comparison, the Spanish Army of Flanders was around 15,000 strong, and the Dutch States Army stood at around 45,000. There was also fighting in Italy, Germany and the Pyrenees, so France had to divert its strength and the war became a stalemate. Louis XIV's wars earned France a reputation of a Great Power, but also lost it, as the French economy suffered from constant naval blockade. Under Napoleon and the French Revolution, it was thanks to the Levee en Masse - France had around 1,000,000 soldiers.

      Obviously without France starting a war in 1688 the Ottomans would’ve been screwed.
      The war against France forced the HRE to redeploy most of its troops to the west and thus ended the offensive of the HRE against the Ottomans.

    • @TheAustrianAnimations87
      @TheAustrianAnimations87 2 роки тому +9

      @@turkcukayi France was the only reason why the Ottomans were able to retake Belgrade from Austria in 1690, without them Austria would force the Ottomans into the peace table a few years earlier. To be honest, the ones begging for help were actually the Ottomans. Because the French army was the largest in Europe in the 1690s, Austria also had help from other countries (although Austria still deployed 3/5 of its army against France). The Ottomans, while successful against Russia & Venice, got completely humiliated by only 2/5 of Austria's army in this war, while France on the other hand still remained the strongest European country with the largest army in 1700.
