      ***** I actually think he would've done better if he used Smolensk and the subsequent retreat of the Russian army as an opportunity to drive into more valuable areas than the one in between Smolensk and Moscow, such as Ukraine, and be able to fight Russia's army in warmer conditions, as well as seizing the breadbasket along with Russia's access to the Black Sea. Or Napoleon could have just obliterated the Russian army by preventing their initial retreat in the first place.

      The Mongols conquered them
      The Germans knocked them out of World War One
      The trick to beating the Russians is 1. don't attack them when they are unified and 2. Equip your goddamn troops for winter. It'll be there. The Finns handed the Russians their ass but eventually had to quit due to sheer numbers but ended up more or less favourably. The Russians did not have their hearts in it (it was not a defensive war) and the Finns were even better prepared for winter.
      The Poles sent them packing in the 1920s. The Poles battered the Red Army and rope-a-doped for a bit.
      The Russians were decisively defeated by the Japanese in 1904-05 in Port Arthur and the Far East.

    • @polpot6
      @polpot6 5 років тому +17

      None of those were a decisive loss for the Russians. Poland and Finland was just a hiccup in their conquest of reclaiming lost land. The Germans didn’t knock them out of the war either, revolution was inevitable. Even if Lenin wasn’t there, Trotsky could have probably done it himself or Lenin could have left Switzerland himself.
      Russia didn’t exist when the mongols invaded

    I have to say that France was the one who declared war to Spain. The French armies were suppossed to march to Portugal via the Burgos route, but they began marching into towns as far as Zaragoza. Later in 1808, Ferdinand, the son of Charles III of Spain made a coup (Aranjuez Mutiny). Seeing that there was no resolution on that, Napoleon convocated both of them at Bayonne, where Ferdinand abdicated in Charles, and Charles abdicated in Joseph, Napoleon's brother. However, there were members of the royal family in Madrid, and when the French forces entered Madrid and kidnapped the young prince, the Spaniards attacked the French (2 of May uprising).

    ''Relations with Spain quickly deteriorate during the operation, eventually leading to Spain switching sides, and ultimately the Peninsular War''
    Hold on, are you suggesting that Spain switched side for no reason at all? Spain switched side because napoleon betrayed Spain, when Spain let napoleon's troops pass through to take over portugal, they took over Spain instead, beggining the Spanish war of Independence.

    It took 5 coalitions and almost all of Europe to defeat one country and one man. Even today, military strategists and scholars alike study Napoléon's battle tactics, as he was one of the best military conquerors known to man. Yeah, that’s how they have brainwashed you to think thanks to the Spain’s Black Legend that mainly the Anglo Saxons spread (along with the French), through propaganda to destroyed a solid an rich Hispanoamerica (the term “Latinoamerica” was invented by a Frenchman named Michel Chevalier in the nineteen century and it’s nonsense), to turned into pieces, fight against each other and became poor, no by the Spanish like your school books make you believed. They lost territories to United States in the north and to Brazil in the south, and became basically a mess thanks to the British, mainly, which were behind all the independence scheme.
      It’s a shame that you portrayed Napoleon as a kind of hero instead of the bastard that he really was (not just regarding Spain, but other European fellows as well). By the way, later on in that same century France tried to conquered Mexico, so I wouldn’t be that blindly grateful to the French.

Not impressive today, but, the average in France was about 5.45ft/ 1.66m... in 1900; Napoleonian wars took place on 1800-1815, so 100 years before he was just 2cm above average. On the other hand, his imperial guards were expected to have at least 6ft/1.83m of height, so it is quite easy to say he was short, and one should not forget Englishmen were always trying to belittle him (pun intended 🙃)

      Since the 16th century? Spain started to decline in the 18th century, not the 16th. In the 16th adn 17th century Spain was the major power in Europe and the world. Also, about Wellington army. That was not the only army, as said before, there were isolated armies in Spain that should not be belittle, since they won most of the first battle against France. Actually, they won the very FIRST battle against the Napoleonic Empire, led by a Spanish general. And also, the first years the English and Portuguese didn't helped the Spanish at all, quite the opposite, they would do anything possible to ignore Spain's ask for help, or actually say they would help and in the last moment back up on their word, apart from the raping, sacking and burning of Spanish cities after "liberating" them from the French invaders. More than helpful, they were a burden, to put it midly, but they were really just another invading and destructive force (and it is well known that their intention was to actually invade Spain after expelling the French, they just concluded that it wouldn't be that easy and let it be). It is indeed when Wellington was finally in charge that things changed for the better, but he was not in charge from the very beginning.

    During the Napoleonic wars the british decided to be caustious, and let their allies get killed for them in order to soften up Napoleon. After hundreds of thousands of Austrians Russians Prussians and Spaniards have died, they move in, having their ass narrowly saved by the prussians at Waterloo..The British, frustred by their lack of heroism proceed to develop some atrocious propaganda such as the Sharpe and Hornblower series .

      I have to look into that, and it appears this isn't the only war that it happens in. WW2 is a notable candidate were the British betrayed Poland, France and Soviet Union.

    • @lourencoalmada1305
      @lourencoalmada1305 5 років тому +12

      Yep, had Portugal accepted Napoleon's ultimatum and cut all trade with England like every other European country had done, the British would have been starved to death before they could even fight Napoleon. Because Portugal didn't accept it, Napoleon invaded and the Royal Family fled to Brazil, while the army and people resorted to guerrilla warfare against the French. The British then arrived to Portugal and with the help of the Portuguese pushed Napoleon back into France. Once Napoleon was defeated, the Portuguese Empire was in shambles, since we had spent all our money in the war, and shortly thereafter Brasil fought and gained independence, and after that, to add insult to injury, Portugal entered into a civil war. Through all of that the British decided to help many of our enemies, buy our most profitable companies and destroy our textile industry, the backstabbing bastards.

    • @erwannleligerien3771
      @erwannleligerien3771 5 років тому +2

      Yes but if Napoleon had invaded Portugal as he wanted, a Bonaparte would become king of your kingdom (because the official king was in Brazil) and Portugal had a powerful fleet, a weapon between the hands of the French but the objective of the French invasion was to close the continental gate what Portugal was for the British.
      You had the British support, they had your minas de ouro...in Brazil !

    Austria's repeated failures are almost comedic. They try to get something going while France is distracted in Spain and get utterly smashed. Lol.

    • @lechad8686
      @lechad8686 Рік тому

      Austria's constant war with France was what brought down Napoleon. While other European monarchies bowed down to him, he had to pour countless men and resources at fighting the Habsburg realm, getting beat at Aspern and could've been defeated at Wagram even. France was near collapse before Bonaparte's Italian campaigns that ended the Revolutionary Wars.
      "Utterly smashed" lol. Do you study history, or are you a kid who just repeats what he sees in cringe internet memes?
