2:00:59 Eli is Liquid. The DNA didnt match because they tried to match it with Venom, not the real Big Boss. The ending Timeline even comfirm Eli is Liquid Snake and David is Solid Snake. The 'psychic child' is Psycho Mantis from MGS1.
@@SeeUatTheTop_ I've seen this over the course of his series, I think it comes from the fact that he's trying to rush them all and it's his first time playing it. It makes it easy to gloss over a few threads or miss a few details and hints since you're trying to make content on something you've only seen once. Don't hold it against him, we've had time to digest the series, he's only barely experiencing it and quickly moving from title to title without reflecting as much as he could be.
@@Poketroid23 fair comment, although I think the target audience for these types of videos will all be experienced metal gear fans so some of his takes are a bit jarring. The big one for me is that he didn't ''get'' the ladder section in MGS3 and looked at it as some kind of flaw in the game rather than the great reflective moment it was meant to be
@@brenito2092 looking back, yeah he acknowledged it a minute before, but then he worded it like it was still a mystery which is what led to this thread of comments. I think the cryptic writing is rubbing off on him.
Funny story I actually didnt realize that quiet was the assassin until the reveal because for some reason I remembered the assassin's face being covered. This is how i discovered that I have face blindness at the age of 19.
There's a few of these, another one is how in MGS3, the NPC in one of the cutscenes complements Naked Snake on his perfect Russian, but in MGSV Venom Snake can't understand Russian at all and needs a translator
@@rhelyk7893 the in game explanation of brain damage is weak, but I think intentionally so. Brain damage like that would either improve over time or effect a LOT more than just foreign language. It's a good subtle cue for sure
There was another subtle hint. Naked Snake told The Boss that he didn’t have a sense of smell back in Snake Eater. Then Venom Snake tells Kaz that he can smell the vocal cord parasites’ sweet scent in the quarantine platform.
The upgrades the enemies get depend on how you play the gane. Shoot loads of headshots & theyll stary wearing hats. Attack mainly at night & they'll wear nvg etc.
@@cutthr0atjake man I really had EVERYTHING ON, EVERY MEASURE NONSTOP, except for Fulton because I always tried to evacuate everything in stealth and I was spotted only 3 or 4 times in my 85 hours of first playthrough. However, every other countermeasure was always on, even if I sent boys on mission to destroy them
@@zomebody5529 Kojima wrote an entire series in where even the villains are likeable, but Huey is seriously the most brutally stupid and cowardice characters.
This is such a good game. Can't help but imagine "what if" Kojima had received the full budget he wanted. Apparently there was even talk of a 3rd open world environment that would have been an urban setting.
Kojima also said in a pre-release interview that we'd be able to re-visit the prison camp in GZ. Memory is a little fuzzy on it but I feel like there was a note to that along the lines of it being "in a way we wouldn't expect." There was impossibly high ambition behind the development of tpp. The chopped Eli mission, and adult Chico in the concept art... so many things that might still not have been kept if the process hadn't been given a hard deadline and budget restriction before the studio had the plug pulled completely. There's still a lot we don't know about what could have been.
"What if Konami gave kojima a morbillion dollars to make a sequel he didn't want to make to an overpriced tech demo he didn't want to make to a sequel he didn't want to make to a "finale" sequel he didn't want to make to a prequel he didn't want to make"
Honestly I felt the same on my first playthrough. But the game hits different when you start thinking about how this game was meant to be interpreted. It feels better under the assumption that venom's mind isn't processing info right. Due to the trauma and memories implanted in his head. It feels a lot more like a game that way.
Just so we’re clear. Big boss is Jack from MGS3. The snake in this game is not Big Boss. He is Venom Snake, who is essentially a deep fake of big boss in real life. The real Big Boss is actually Ishmael from the beginning, and during this entire games timeline is building Zanzibarland
You're correct up to your last point. The game's timeline isn't about building Zanzibarland, it's about the build up to the Outer Heaven Uprising in Metal Gear 1. The games events take place prior to it with the final cutscene with Venom in front of the mirror taking place shortly before Outer Heaven happening. The tape is Big Boss briefing Venom on everything and is used to explain why Solid Snake seemingly kills Big Boss twice in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as Venom was a body double in Outer Heaven and the real Big Boss was in Zanzibarland.
@@PlebNCYou misread what he said. He’s saying that Ishmael/the real Big Boss is building Zanzibarland while the events of this game are happening. He already said what you said.
Is he Jack or John? The letter given to Venom Snake signed with "John". I am confused about it. The Boss and Zero called him Jack. But he call himself John.
@@afiqazman6615 Jack is Big Boss/Naked Snake's real name. John is the name Naked Snake told Ocelot was his real name in MGS3. This either means it's from Ocelot or a subtle hint that Venom isn't really Big Boss.
Fun fact about this game: there's unique cutscenes for certain unique conditions, so if its your birthday/the date you inputed at the start of the game there will be a happy birthday cutscene and the NPC's change depending on who you have on motherbase, a unique cutscene will also play if you have quite on that day. There's also unique cutscenes for when you have low staff moral and when snake hasn't had a shower for a long while and one for not visiting motherbase for a while, with the low moral cutscene being my personal favourite cutscene in the entire game.
For my PC playthrough, I copied the games save files right when The Phantom Limbs start so that I essentially skip the entire prologue mission. The only downside is that the name you enter during character creation stays the same. The face can of course be modified later.
44:50 The game is actually deeper than that. If you always shoot the enemies with headshots, they'll start to wear helmets. If you always do your missions at night, they'll start to wear night vision goggles. It's not just that they get "better" equipment as you progress, they are literally responding to your play style in a really subtle and organic way. If you want to understand how deep the game is, the Piggyback game guide does a good job explaining these things.
If I had a nickel for every time Huey got pushed down some stairs after talking with the bad guy I'd have 2 nickels. It's not alot but it's weird it happened twice.
1:46:46 "i won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea, i will always be with you" man these words are tattooed on my brain, thats when i understood why kojima wanted kieth sutherland although i loved david hayter perfomance in peace walker i can't imagine this scene without the voice of keith
I recommend watching the video essays of a UA-camr called Futuresound Productions, who has done alot of essays on MGSV's story that makes some of the missions that feel like filler actually make sense especially with the game's themes about language, information control and truth.
Beyond that they tell the story of what's happening in the world right now. It's a bit more noticeable on a replay but listening in on soldier conversations often clue you into what's going on, the weapon Skullface is testing out, XOF's entire chain of operations, etc.
@@PlebNC I may be wrong but I think you have to found out something haven't you? Like some specific side quest or certain amount of them. I may be wrong though, I played this years ago
my god this game is good. probably the most hours of a game on this just replaying it. if metal gear solid delta can combine the gameplay of mgsv with an actually crafted world with better designed places to stealth through it will be incredible
Brilliant video as always Chole but you didn't mention the room full of men saluting you in the quarantine platform as you execute them? That scene is the most emotional in the whole game imo it destroyed me.
the horse Volgin uses in the epilogue is actually the horse that belonged The Boss, the reason the left side of it's face is burned is because that was the side facing towards the explosion after you beat The Boss (Also, if you stare at Quiet while she showers for long enough, an instrumental of Snake Eater starts playing... goddamnit Kojimbo you could have just said that you're horny)
@@Angel_alanis this reply made me just realise I'm rusty as hell when it comes to Metal Gear, especially lore. Thanks for reminding me to not rely on memory.
I remember playing all games with Big Boss without killing anyone, specially once you’re able to extract people with the fulton. And MGSV was no different, I literally had zero lethal weapons like RPGS and grenade launchers developed (I was stuck in A Quiet Exit for a whole week), so when I got to Shining Lights, Even in Death, and had to actually kill someone for the first time, it broke me, tears actually started rolling down my face. When I got to the room with my guys humming the Peacewalker theme I was full on ugly crying. I had to take a break after that. The game may have it’s flaws, but no other piece of media has made me feel the way that mission made me feel
I really feel if Ground Zeros and Phantom pain were combined, it wouldn't have as much criticisms. If you play it back to back, then you really notice Venom's character changes right from the beginning.
When it's raining and preferably at nighttime, you can see your own avatar's face on the windows of the chopper in the ACC. Basically the game outright reveals the twist to you but in yet another subtle way.
51:35 D Horse is actually the *#1* means of transportation in the game. Matching the speed of the fastest vehicle, turning in place, going over small obstacles that stop cars cold, having stealth benefits hanging off the side of the saddle, being summoned literally anywhere with a whistle, and slipping up vehicles with horse poop that works like a Mario Kart banana.
Just starting to get into this game again, "Nuclear", by Mike Oldfield is such a good song. I only recently found out the vocalist is Luke Spiller of The Struts who did "Could Have Been Me", I want to hear Halsey cover "Nuclear" one day, especially if they ever make MGS6(Which 99% won't happen because Kojima is busy with Death Stranding and Konami hates him).
The album that Nuclear is on, Man On The Rocks, is interesting because Nuclear is the only track that has foreboding or haunting vibe. The rest of the album is chill songs about sailing and living in the Caribbean. Very good album to play Sea of Thieves or Assassin's Creed Black Flag to.
There is a lot to comment here. -I chuckle every time I remember we went from 4/Rising's "Nano-machines son" to V's "Actually everything is parasites" explaining how the Boss's original squad and Volgin's powers came from parasites. -The story of the game was a huge let down for me once I originally played when It came out (I got my first job exclusively to pay for it). However, as time passes, the ideas there just continue to grow in my heart. I love Quiet, and how Kojima managed to meta insert us into the game. Of course we (the player) are Big Boss, we have always controlled everything! -This is meant to be the conclusion for Big Boss story, and while it doesn't really depict him as the Villain from the early entries, it fits. He has always been a prisoner of the missions/role he is put into, while I believe he is good, we didn't have the best company (Looking at you Ocelot) which ended up in all his wrongdoings. While Solid Snake, we had great support from friends, making him the "hero" of the franchise. -My fever dream would be to play as Solid Snake with this level of mechanical polish. -The gameplay of this game is leaps and rounds above everything else, to this day I haven't found a third-person shooter with as many options, or better controls as this game. -Ranking it is difficult indeed, some areas are great, which only highlights how bad some others are.
My dream scenario for this game would have been: -Turn more of the Filler main missions into secondary. -Have the difficulty modifiers for all of them. -Shorten the scope of the maps. -Shorten the game overall. I would have loved for this game to be a revamp for the MGS franchise kind of how breath of the wild was for Zelda, or the Arkham games for Batman. To have at least 2 more games built upon this same engine, and mechanics, adding new settings, tweaking and polishing mechanics along the way. Also, the Development story for the game is crazy, I feel the game is a mess because neither Kojima or Konami knew how to work with each other anymore. I'm sure that had someone told Kojima to "limit" the scope of the game more from the beginning, we would still have him expanding this world. The game isn't a 10/10 game, because it tries to be three 10/10 games at the same time.
It really made the embrace at the end of MGS4 mean a lot more. I was really confused at that game, because between MGS3 and MGS4 there wasn't really anything to suggest boss wasn't the villain he was portrayed as. Turns out he was just trying to do the right thing. Everyone was, in their own way. Solid Snake just happened to do the best at it, and even then he didn't really save the world, just set it free. For a while.
@@finnvost9349 personally, it bugs me a little that none of Solid Snake's games are as mechanically polished as MGSV. Because he is supposed to be the better Soldier, Solid is the man who makes possible the impossible, and he killed Big Boss twice.
Fun fact, the game actually gives up the twist for those who didn't knew and are familiar with the lore, when it asks for an enterpreter for russian, when I first came across I was like "Didn't MGS3 stablished that Big Boss was fluent in russian?!"
@@ekmi0322 Honestly, yes it is, basically the human brain has a really hard time forgeting how to understand language, I would absolutely agree if he had issues speaking it... But understanding... That was a dead giveway.
They quite literally state that the shrapnel must have damaged the language part of his brain thats not really them giving it away they gave a very good reason as to why you needed an interpreter
To me, gameplay wise, its the best game ever. The open world and the replayability is just insane, another video essay about MGSV told me that since we are venom snake, we are now gonna fill up the plot holes ourselves give what MGSV has given us, to me i filled said plot holes with Q: if kaz is loyal to venom and david then why did david kill venom, doesnt that mean kaz helped with the death of venom? A: im pretty sure kaz started helping david after venom's death and snake was sent there by big boss himself to be killed by venom only for david to surpass venom Q: Sahelantropus A: maybe his parts were used in the metal gear in intrude n313, the one solid snake went after It could go on, and i love MGSV, my only disappointment is that knowing its not finished, we probably couldve gotten a 3rd map full of XOF soldiers so we can hear english dialogue and fight of XOF soldiers instead of them being exclusive to OKB zero mission
Fun fact: When ambushed by The Man On Fire in Africa you can defeat him using the water pistol or by using explosives to knock him into the swimming pool.
A video about 2 hours long talking about The phantom pain? _Nice._ Since you didn't mentioned it, I want to point something kinda important: the reason why Volgin died again is because when he caught Venom, he noticed that he wasn't the same guy that caused his death many years ago. After knowing that he was chasing the wrong guy and that the floating child leaved him, he just had no reason for revenge and, well, died for good.
The last infected guy in the purge was a guy I used for combat missions a lot. I liked him. It was really tragic that he was actually one of the ones I knew. :( This game does have a lot of pretentious, and rather silly writing. Kojima can't decide whether he wants paranormal things to exist or not, and that's silly. However, it really succeeds thematically for me. Still one of the greats.
59:26 You can order her with the map. You can choose where she sets up and can order her to do limited recon of a base or camp. She won't mark every enemy like D Dog, but she will get some, mark other POIs, and leave a little ammo gift.
@@KoalaTContent I was looking for a comment mentioning this! Give her enough time and she’ll usually mark 90% of the camp, and you can use a combination of map markers, predicted FoMs and high grade -detective vision- NVGs to figure out the last 10% of enemies. She’s also S tier on long side op runs because her supply drops will eventually encompass *all* your equipment at a high support level. Easily S tier, and I’d argue slightly edges DD out due to her scouting ability.
ive been here every step of the way as i have only really gotten the mgs hype this past year so I've essentially been on this journey with you. I've sunk nearly 100 hours into this game, i love it and excited to see your take and breakdown. Great work on the series!
No joke, I play MGSV with mods to this day and it feels like the best, most realistic, and most rewarding stealth experience out there. I cannot decribe the way it make me feel, it feels like the *purest* Metal Gear experience. The gameplay of V is a timeless gem, best gameplay in the series. It's a crime we never got another Metal Gear with everything they learned from V (let's hope Koji Production's "Physint" will expand on V's gameplay!). At the same time, being a massive fan of the series, I always try my best and ignore the fact that it's part of the Metal Gear franchise, story wise. It's such a mess...and it feels so unfinished, too. TPP is just a frustrating game to look at as a fan of the series. It could have been SO much more, too... At least we've got its core gameplay to enjoy!
@@RevPerdueJosh Hey, I'd written a pretty lengthy comment with some mods with eplanations on what they do, but UA-cam decided to bin it for some reason, so you get a short version now lol. The ones I would recommend are Infinite Heaven, IHHook, Interrogation Item Drops, Take Me Off The Grid V2, and US Naval Prison Facility (this last one requires Ground Zeroes as it's an import of Camp Omega into TPP, but you can use a cracked version as well). They're all on Nexus Mods. Have fun!
I never realised the assassin at the start was Quiet, until you find out at the end. However, I knew from the start that you weren't really Big Boss because I recognised Ishmaels voice as that of Kieffer Sutherland..
1:38:15 Dear lord, thank you for actually talking about this, I always thought it was weird how basically nobody ever talked about how Ocelot just nonchalantly just confessed to the Boss out of nowhere like that and not a single person even lifted a single eyebrow I know its MGS and it is sure known for its "uniqueness" but this one happens completely out of nowhere lmao
Yo, those constant upward inflections are insane. It sounds like every sentence is a question. I love the breakdown, as this is one of my favorite games; but dude...
Quiet in the beginning isn't on screen long and you only get one closeup, with so much happening and me putting the main story on the backburner I think it was like 10 hours of game time, weeks after I started, when I came across the naked sniper in the desert. So by then I didn't make any connection and was blown away when I replayed it as the final mission and noticed it. Also love how Skullface waited 10 years to hold a speech about hate to the wrong guy. Also love how the final mission, the actual end of the story, is missing from the game, it just randomly ends in the middle of act 2. It feels the whole time like there is more, there is something always there yet just out of reach. Almost like... a Phantom Pain. DUDU DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Dude…. You completely misunderstood the ending. Venom feels betrayed. Just like the player does. That’s why he punches the mirror. That’s why the song is The Man Who Sold the World. The legendary soldier went into hiding and used his own loyal man as a human shield. It’s a terrible betrayal of someone who believed in him. He literally steals his life! And Kojima spoke about how it was difficult to make the player feel they were the bad guy when they were playing as Big Boss. It disturbed him that nobody saw him as a villain in Peace Walker… because they justified his actions as the player. So with V he has Big Boss betray US. So we feel that pain. It’s a horrifically evil thing. And a genius twist. Why do you think he set it up that way?? If Venom was just going to go… “huh, ok” the why even have the twist for the player?
Man I played this game as a kid after playing mgs3 on the 3ds years before, and I can’t tell you how betrayed and even a bit disappointed I also felt at the ending.
While I do agree with you that Big boss betrayed Venom, I don't think your interpretation of the ending is the only way .I do think it's an ending you are supposed to have your own opinion on. Like plenty of people saw the mirror punching more like Venom severing contact with their old self. Because whoever they was before doesn't matter now because they are Big Boss, just like John also is Big Boss. And for plenty of players, they'd see as the coolest thing ever and would absolutely sacrifice themselves for BB. But you can also see it as how messed up it is that Venom is willing to do that. Because didn't the Boss also went through too? Wasn't she also a loyal subject who was willing to play her part even though she know it will end up with her being killed and turned Big Boss into the man he is today? And now Big Boss is doing the same to Venom, hell the person who Venom is sacrificing him to is Big Boss'es clone. And Big Boss is not realizing how hypocritical and awful he is being for doing that to Venom. And then it's your interpretation too. And even in the so called "Big Boss is the coolest" ending, the player is not realizing how much Big Boss manipulated us and is one the reasons why the world is so messed up in the Solid Snake saga.
Eli’s DNA test was negative because they tested Venoms DNA, not Big Boss The Psychic child is clearly Psycho Mantis The fact that you couldn’t work out these two things is actually staggering and makes me think you are in no position whatsoever to be making a video about these games
yeah i know right! kinda insane tbh but also i hate how the MAJORITY of these comments are saying how MGSV is a “unfinished” game even though Kojima himself has said multiple times that it’s a COMPLETED game and honestly people saying it is “unfinished” are just being so disingenuous toward not even kojima himself but literally the entire team that worked on MGSV like cmon man that’s so messed up
@@SlimJuiceHD The never-ending topic, 9 years laters people keep saying it´s unfinished when literally there´s nothing else left to tell by the time the game ended.
@@dbstop9194 and any other info people want from the game, they literally give you tapes to listen to whenever you want and you can watch tons of youtube videos of people explaining things you missed or don’t understand. it’s that simple.
Regarding Hideo being someone you can recruit, it actually happens three times. You can get him in Peace Walker when you're tracking down the truck. If you don't select the right truck, you can find other secrets, including Mr. Kojima being available for recruitment.
Have really enjoyed these reviews! As someone who has been playing and replaying these games all the way back since MGS came out for PS1 in 1998, it was a joy to watch someone experience the series in release order for the first time. I restarted my own replay of the series and am so stoked for Delta.
Venom being a semi silent protagonist is stupid. Kojima couldn't commit to one side or the other. He is both a nameless medic, and he is supposed to be us the player. He is both Big Boss, and he is a phantom/doppelganger. He can talk, and obviously does talk on a few occassions, and yet he doesn't, making situations akward like when he sat listening to skull face on that long car ride.
1:29:50 Why didn't you comment on the big reveal that Miller is blind? :-/ Bizarre (Not to mention how paranoid he's become -- it's the beginning of the end for DD, and a sign that he's become "blinded by revenge".)
I wish they had more missions like "start naked and get equipment on a mission". Also I wish enemies were much smarter and had better vision. It's a matter of a few float variables, I think Konami could do some kind of hardcore difficulty for the whole game
@notcole A fun fact is that when this game came out there was a buddy app you could set up on your IOS/Android device that worked as a live menu and you could do a plethora of stuff in real time without opening the menu in the game, i propped up a small samsung tablet i had during my first playthrough and would order supplies, get the lay of the land during loadings and a ton of information such as playing the tapes through either the dualshock or through the tablet, it also served as a support system for the FOB stuff, it was pretty forward thinking
Incredible. I also decided to get into metal gear after all this time because i wanted to play Delta. And i unknowingly played each game at almost the same time as you. Now ive watched all your essays. Great content
The issue with the cassette tapes. The game used to have an app, It was supposed to be designed so that you could listen to the cassette tapes while you was driving to work or on a walk. So you could get these story elements separate from your game time.
Coming back to play this game again in anticipation of Delta and also the 9 year anniversary. Originally played on Xbox put about 700 hours into it. Now bought it for my PS5 and excited to put another 700 hours into it lol. "I'm afraid its been... 9 years."
This is the most hyped I had ever been for a video game in my life. Got it just at the beginning of my junior year of college. Played it every day in September 2015, beating it by October. Amazing game that has its story potential cut short by Konami's terrible decisions. Never forgive them for that. Love MGS V
Oh my metal gear is solid. It's so fun and interesting seeing everyone have a different play of this game and have varying takes on the plot but still conclude this game is straight up one of the best ever conceived but has run amok along the way
Got to point out the FOB system is a freemium F2P style portion that does at least minimal impact to your single player missions. I think it might be impossible, and absolutely at least very infeasible, to get the upper levels of "single player mode" gear researched. By that, I mean the kind of stuff they expect you to be able to afford and deploy in single player alone. You only get 1 base that is fully single player, and the second is able to be attacked. It might not happen much, but even when the PS3 version had a little bit of age on it, I got attacked twice and lost some soldiers, and never attacked anyone else. Getting 3rd+ base also requires the freemium currency, where you either need to play the game in general and check you freebies enough, or possibly pay up real money. I think there's a mod to work around this, and it's still unclear what may ever happen to this if they pull the servers down. Obviously if they don't patch it, it's going to be a pain or require a mod. Otherwise, the game play is extremely fun. Also, it looks amazing, even back on the PS3 version. I feel the story of what we got is incomplete, especially as a game filling the gaps between the prequels and "sequels" that left HUGE plot holes that could spell the end of the world if left unresolved, and I fully except Konami would have had to money to let it be finished. Konami falls into megacrop territory, and possibly the first gaming company to lead the way into milking gambling and mobile gaming as a much easier means of extreme profit, which has been for little more purpose than to make already insanely wealthy investors even more money. I especially poke that jab at them, when you consider how much they sold Ground Zeroes for, despite how little content it had.
Something I want to mention is I played through TPP twice, first on Xbox and second time on my PC. And the PC version may be too easy with the mouse and keyboard. I had more difficulty pulling off headshots on console whereas the mouse gave me much better accuracy. Despite that the PC port is honestly the best way to experience TPP.
great vid! great series! it was fun to have followed your journey through the series. if you ever feel like revisiting TPP, as you mentioned, the modding community has added tons of features that make the game even more fun.
Just found your video and i think it's a funny coincidence that 3 weeks ago is when i decided to seriously start playing the game after it sitting in my library for a few years. Now I've got 133 hours :)
So, fun detail with child Mantis that occurs throughout the whole game is he takes on little aspects of whoever has 'control' over him at the moment. Volgin gives him little fires on his straight jacket, Snake gives him his horn, Eli/Liquid gives him a beret on his shoulder, and though it's really hard to see past the gas mask, Skull Face gives his domino mask.
For years I've been thinking that randomly they'll drop a crazy update that fixes the story and many other things on the nine year anniversary of the tpp release. Your thumbnail is the first time I've seen someone reference that line. Here's hoping it comes true. Looking forward to watching this.
Just went trough your whole Ace Combat video (the 4 hour long one). I enjoyed it so much, that I immediately had to jump on the next video. Really enjoying your content so far! 🎉
I am a MGS5 apologist, but there are so many easy tweaks they could have done that would have made a more satisfying send off. Besides just not finishing the game, not including David Hayter in some way was a huge mistake. Even if Kiefer was Venom for the entire game, all they needed to do was during the “Truth” reveal have Ismael’s voice suddenly be changed to David’s. I as a fan of this series would have lost my mind and immediately forgive how unceremoniously they dropped my hero form the series. That way they could achieve what they wanted with the venom character while still catering to fans.
when you dont use (at all) an item you brought on a mission, it is refunded after mission i think. thats why you always run with full items, even if you dont anticipate using them. also, if you use them at all, you pay the full price
I have nearly a thousand hours on MGSV, why? That free roam and soldier capturing made it that fun for me. FOBs and MGO played a very little role in that time as well 😅
What a great review! Very detailed and thoroughly explained well. I remember getting this game back in October 2015 and wasn’t all that excited to play it. But this game has definitely been a masterpiece for me. Yes the story could’ve been improved with the story but you can’t forget how great the gameplay is. Unfortunately Kojima and Konami butted heads a lot that in the end, he fell short of completing it. The review you gave was good too. I remember how IGN gave it a 10 but you said it yourself, the narrative could’ve been a bit better. I agree but it’s still will be a 10 for me, almost 10 years later. This review was so awesome!!!
I highly disagree that mgs5 have the best stealth in the series. The main point is Fox Engine isn't optimised for handling stealth in multiple story buildings. You can notice this in airport, where guards on all floors can hear snake making noise in any part of the building. Thats why the airport is the only building in the game with more than 2 floors.
Practice, practice, practice.. I've played this game for so long, and this current "pick up"(after a year since playing).. Something clicked . I keep my head on a swivel.. Really perfect example the airport building.. I can only say.. Paaaa-ractice.
Great and fair video on a really complicated game. I’d love to see a wrap up video of your overall thoughts on the series now you’ve finished as someone new to these games, especially in 2024. I grew up with these games and I always found each new release re contextualised the previous titles. The themes are really built up over each title and I think the series really deserves analysing as a whole as well as individually. There’s a lot of (I think) unfair criticism over the story and writing in these games and I think you’ve been really fair through these videos. I maintain that from a gameplay perspective, this might be the best game ever made quite honestly, at least for my money. It’s such a huge shame that the behind the scenes issues hampered the final story so much though. A director’s cut version of this game could really be the best in the series but we’ll probably never see one.
1:09 "MGS5 is an *ACTION-ADVENTURE* stealth game." That right there is the thesis statement for how so many players misinturpret Phantom Pain. The entire MGS franchise (with two or so exceptions, in Revengance and perhaps another I'm forgetting) is stealth, first and foremost. It even says as much over each title: MGS (1998) "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." MGS2: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." MGS3: "TACTICAL ESIONAGE Action." MGS4: ""TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." and yes, even MGS5: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Operation" (even going as far as replacing the word "ACTION" with "Operations" since it is open world). The words "tactical" and "espionage" denote the stealth foundation of the genre it damn near single-handedly created. Metal Gear Solid is meant to be played *stealthfully,* not guns a'blazin while blaring 80s rock from a helicopter. Phantom Pain going from stealth to action is like Call of Duty going from FPS to RPG. I understand that making it open world with guns guns guns makes sense to increase sales, but it bastardizes the gameplay. Also yes, I know *all* MGS games have zanny action in them, but again, look at where it's placed in the subheading of every game. After Tactical, and and after espionage. The action comes from the story, not the gameplay.
Whew that was a very long watch, I got this game for the PS3 (yeah imagine that, MGSV is on the PS3 and it is still as good) and I was so excited to play it. Having finished it multiple times and S ranked most missions, it definitely is one of the best games I've ever played and one of the best MGS games, but not below MGS3 or even MGS2. I don't know how much hours I spent on this game, but everything I have put into this game was so frustrating and worth it. I even have the in-game map of Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border hanging on top of my bed because I got the Day 1 Edition copy for the PS3. Thank you Chole for playing the franchises I love ever since reviewing Armored Core. I guess the series is over. Right...?
Yep that R&D target practice was insane! The only way I was able to finally complete it was by swapping to mouse & keyboard, and even then it took a bunch of tries to complete. You have to do it perfectly. If I was playing on console and not PC, I'm not sure I would have been able to 100% the game lol.

The 'psychic child' is Psycho Mantis from MGS1.
The fact that he didn’t understand either of these things is actually staggering. So obvious
My favorite detail in this game is that Venom always smokes electric cigars, which big boss is known to not like.
Just a very subtle hint.

That one was really good.

Seems like you missed Paz, she is in the medical bay

My dream scenario for this game would have been:
-Turn more of the Filler main missions into secondary.

Q: if kaz is loyal to venom and david then why did david kill venom, doesnt that mean kaz helped with the death of venom?
A: im pretty sure kaz started helping david after venom's death and snake was sent there by big boss himself to be killed by venom only for david to surpass venom
Q: Sahelantropus
A: maybe his parts were used in the metal gear in intrude n313, the one solid snake went after

Since you didn't mentioned it, I want to point something kinda important: the reason why Volgin died again is because when he caught Venom, he noticed that he wasn't the same guy that caused his death many years ago.

I backed out of other videos because of that. Checked to see if it was still happening and yep....can't do 2 hours of that
I didn’t realize it until I read your comment, now it’s all I hear. He sounds like South Park playing Warcraft🤣
Eli’s DNA test was negative because they tested Venoms DNA, not Big Boss
The Psychic child is clearly Psycho Mantis
The fact that you couldn’t work out these two things is actually staggering and makes me think you are in no position whatsoever to be making a video about these games

Regarding Hideo being someone you can recruit, it actually happens three times. You can get him in Peace Walker when you're tracking down the truck. If you don't select the right truck, you can find other secrets, including Mr. Kojima being available for recruitment.
Playing through MGS V gave me some of my best memories in gaming, but I have not had the slightest urge to replay it since then.
Thanks for this bro. The fact you sat and put two hours into this is both really cool and informative.
I think the V stands for the split the series was going on. It’s not mgs5 it’s mgsV as in this is where we part ways.
1:29:50 Why didn't you comment on the big reveal that Miller is blind? :-/ Bizarre (Not to mention how paranoid he's become -- it's the beginning of the end for DD, and a sign that he's become "blinded by revenge".)
"I should say that this is the 17th video in a series"
I've never clicked on a channel faster
Its sad you didn't do the PAZ missions
I wish they had more missions like "start naked and get equipment on a mission". Also I wish enemies were much smarter and had better vision. It's a matter of a few float variables, I think Konami could do some kind of hardcore difficulty for the whole game
It’s possible to infil with no weapons at all via mods (infinite heaven)
Easily my favourite Metal Gear game. The story telling was a result of all of the complaints they got about the long FMV sections in MGS IV
Making me wanna play it’s been a while
Coming back to play this game again in anticipation of Delta and also the 9 year anniversary. Originally played on Xbox put about 700 hours into it. Now bought it for my PS5 and excited to put another 700 hours into it lol.
"I'm afraid its been... 9 years."
You really need more subscribers, this is really impressive
MgsV isn't in my top 3 of mgs games, but it's definitely flawed masterpiece
I mean quite honestly mgs3 is the only game in the franchise I can think of that's just a straight masterpiece not a flawed one lol
@@cabnbeeschurgr i feel like mgs1 is also a masterpiece, it's still really good even today
It's so fun and interesting seeing everyone have a different play of this game and have varying takes on the plot but still conclude this game is straight up one of the best ever conceived but has run amok along the way
you inspired me to play this again ! i was so let down by how the story was told and second half of the game.
man I'm gonna be eating good with the whole series, glad I found you brothsr
Kojima’s games proves his era of technology and innovation is way ahead of it’s time
@@JustSomeBearWithAMustache not every game
Now I've got 133 hours :)
probably the best 3.50$ i spent
I seriously dont understand why they didn't just focus on essentially having this game be the bridge that fills gaps in the series.
By reference that line I mean in terms of how long it's been since the release of the game..
Awesome video. Gonna go back and binge your others now. And probably replay Phantom Pain.
Just went trough your whole Ace Combat video (the 4 hour long one). I enjoyed it so much, that I immediately had to jump on the next video. Really enjoying your content so far! 🎉
Excellent work. I've enjoyed it tremendously. Thanks!
Yup, the sound occlusion (or lack of it) is a real disappointment and likely why there isn't more indoor stealth...
Lambert khaate Palace has 3 stories
@@leonrussell9607 yeah, and noise isn't muffled or affected by any of them...

God, what a game. Just impressive. Still the best game mechanics
1:09 "MGS5 is an *ACTION-ADVENTURE* stealth game."
That right there is the thesis statement for how so many players misinturpret Phantom Pain. The entire MGS franchise (with two or so exceptions, in Revengance and perhaps another I'm forgetting) is stealth, first and foremost. It even says as much over each title:
MGS (1998) "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action."
MGS2: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action."
MGS3: "TACTICAL ESIONAGE Action."
MGS4: ""TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action."
and yes, even MGS5: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Operation" (even going as far as replacing the word "ACTION" with "Operations" since it is open world).
Well, you can choose not to use action so there’s no problem there
bro… are you mad that they made combat better…?
the stealth is the best it’s ever been and you’re mad that there’s no stealth…????
I hope I survive long enough for the next game in the franchise!
may we all be so lucky...
I guess Delta will have to do for now 😂
Noooooo.
I see what you did there
@@notcoledidn't get the joke, huh?
I do not understand this series...
The Phantom of the Opera, The Phantom Menace, and The Phantom Pain are just all over the place
Clearly the watch order is Phantom of the Opera, Phantom Pain, then Phantom Menace.
We didnt know it at the time, but this was peak videogames.
Right...?
👀
Yep that R&D target practice was insane! The only way I was able to finally complete it was by swapping to mouse & keyboard, and even then it took a bunch of tries to complete. You have to do it perfectly. If I was playing on console and not PC, I'm not sure I would have been able to 100% the game lol.
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you!
Ooooh how much I love metal gear video essays and how happy I am to be so early
