How to Rebuild, Crash. Then Rebuild a Stinson Voyager Again.

  • This is the history of how I rebuilt The first production Voyager 108-2, only to put her on her back on the first trip out of state. In August of 2015 I found myself landing in a variable gusty crosswind in Sun River Or, I left the runway rolling on the main gear and applied the brakes to avoid an obstacle. My lack of experience was the cause of this severely damaged airplane. I walked away unhurt, well except my pride. Rather than dwell on the indecent, I would like this to be a story of perseverance to success. I would not stop until pigs flew again, and neither should you! No matter your challenge, never give up!

    "Props" to you! Well done. I kept thinking of Winston Churchill's rally cry to the British people during WWII - "Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never give up!" Thanks for sticking with it. Inspirational. Really.

    Owed a straight 108 ('46) for 20 years. ending up selling it to my IA/AP . It went to a good home. Easiest airplane to fly and the most undervalued airplane around. Great video. Very humbling, could have happened to me a few times.

      They say the happiest day is when you get your plane and the saddest is when you sell her!
      I'm in the process of making a little history on the 108's. Stay tuned for that one.

      I also have the same aspiration as you, as an RN for many years, I'd like to join Angel Flight to help others in need; patients who can not afford medical transport, etc. But first, I need to earn my PIC license. The sad truth is, so many ppl have signed up for hangar rental space and nothing is available for the next ten years in my area of the Pacific Northwest. Perhaps I won't be alive by then. Thank you for all your videos as for now, I live through them and enjoy the happiness of others like you!!! Best!

      @@FreedomfixerFlying I had just seen your video flying back to Sun River. Amazing flight, but more amazing that you were able to recount your flight there, the accident and that you had made it alive to tell us about it! What a miracle!!! I was based at S21 when this happened! I had my 108-1 hiding in a hangar, so it didn't get traumatized seeing yours "napping". The winds can be tricky there. I soloed my Stinson there in about 13 knot winds, with the windsock at the end of 36 showing a 90 degree crosswind, and the midfield windsock blowing straight down the runway. Glad to see you're flying again!

      Thanks, I appreciate the comment, I have to say if you ever want a great place to crash, It's Sunriver. Everybody was gracious and kind. I think it ironic now that this happened in "tailwheel town". Maybe I should have landed in a turn and avoided the whole mess.

    The Stinson Voyager was my first airplane at around 100 hours. I, too, managed to put her on her back! Unfortunately I wasn’t in a position to rebuild her as a college kid, but she did fly again! 41 years and almost 10,000 hours later I remember her fondly!

    • @FreedomfixerFlying
      @FreedomfixerFlying  3 роки тому

      Wow, I remember how quickly she went from right side to upside down! Glad to hear your Stinson also made a recovery (inserted pun). I find myself conflicted about my accident sometimes. But then I remind myself I'm a better pilot in the long run.

      @@FreedomfixerFlying: Mine was in slow motion! Stiff crosswing and a very icy runway slid me off into 4" of snow....no big deal. Until we reached the point where they'd cleared the mid-runway taxiway and pushed it into a 2'-3' snowbank! At that point it stopped fairly quickly and slowly tipped up on it's nose, then over onto her back. After describing the whole event to the FAA inspector who was experienced in Stinsons he said, "Sounds like you did everything you could do. I'm classifying this an 'incident'." I'm still flying more than ever, logging 1,060 hours so far this year. Stuff happens!

    • @FreedomfixerFlying
      @FreedomfixerFlying  3 роки тому

      @@lorendjones Wow out "incidents" as so similar. I too had a variable crosswind that took me off the surface. I panicked and jump on the beaks fairly hard. The tires grabbed the loose gravel and over I went. My shoulder harnesses saved me from any injury. The inspector told me the only fix was experience. I had to get additional training. That was done in November in Seatle. If you know our weather here, it's crap. My instructor got me to land the 170 in a 15kt. direct crosswind! That's almost max for the plane. I'm definitely a better pilot for that reason.
