Flying to Skagit for a Stinson

  • Greg and Chris wanted me to have a look at a Stinson they were thinking about buying to get my impressions. It just came out of annual, so this isn't a pre-buy inspection. This is just a second opinion/sanity check. Enjoy the view on a clear January day in the PNW.

    When you screamed CLEAR‼️twice⁉️I damn near peed myself laughing 😂. Took me by surprise and is how I plan on doing it from now on⁉️🤪

    As a matter of detail, a metalized 108-3 adds 66 lb to empty weight per airframe log. Benefits include no fuselage buffeting with big hp engines and can leave outside for periods of time, if needed. It's not all that bad.

      The weight sounds about right. I weighed all the panels from the fuse and was around #46ish. Not sure what the wings would be exactly. And after flying Shelia as both versions, I prefer the fabric.

      There are still a couple bugs to work out on her and some upgrades they want to do. She's now at Arlington, so you might see her now and then.

    I had a Cirrus do the exact same thing to me when I was a student pilot on my roughly 5th solo. I was like WOW DUDE! That was pretty damn stupid. Worst part it was a controlled field and ground told him to do it.

      Well This isn't the first time I've been cut off. You have to keep situational aware no matter the airspace.

    You certainly fly out of a busy place! Enjoyed the scenery as always, nice change from our mid-atlantic flat lands, even though we're on the eastern shore of MD.

      Yeah, we go through these periods of IFR for weeks on end. Then on the occasional nice day, it's a zoo! Then back to IFR....

    I know this is an older video, but just seeing it for the first time. You must’ve had full fuel on takeoff heading back home. You can see the fuel coming from your vent cap on the left wing when you made your left turn after take off, 3021 minutes into the video. Was kinda cool with the sun glare on the wing.

      Admittedly I left the transfer pump on too long and filled that tank. There's another Easter egg in there somewhere.

    Thank you for putting some of the ATC confirmations on screen. It helps to try and decipher the language. I wish more flying channels did this. I am studying for my Part 107 and am seriously thinking about going all the way to Private Pilot. Money may limit that dream, but ATC scares the crap out of me. How many times can one request a repeat before control fires a rocket launcher at you? LOL

      Usually the first time you ask to repeat they don't mind. I think it goes up exponentially after that. If you are into flight sims, there are people acting as ATC on the internet. That's a great way to practice. You can also go onto ATClive.net and listen to live and archived transmissions. Like anything else in life it's about practice. The more you do it the easier it gets. The simplest way to remember transmissions is; say Who you are talking to, Who you are, Where you are at and What you want. It's easier to remember it as... Who, Who, Where, What.
      My recommendation for going for your PPL is to save up (approx. 10K) and keep a regular schedule of lessons. You are less likely to relearn something, and you you will progress faster. You'll save time and money by flying regularly. I encourage you to get your PPL. You won't regret it.

    Nice video. I appreciate your efforts on quality! Did I see 4 cameras in the video? It would be nice for you to include comments about local geography- Mt Baker, lakes & rivers? Would this expand your viewers to appreciate the scenery in the NW-I lived in Point Roberts for 5 years.
    I look forward to video on prebuy inspection? I m past buying, but it is interesting to see/hear your comments. Often I see buyers missing key issues. I don’t believe that new buyers appreciate the real cost of aircraft ownership.

      Thanks for the compliment, it takes what feels forever to edit these. I usually run five cameras and a digital recorder. So six tracks, sound effects and soundtrack. Thanks for pointing out the geography. Sometimes I feel redundant mentioning the same locations. I should do a loop around and do just that. This particular video the wide angle cameras make all the distant objects look really small

    Cool video, nice looking airplane. Looks good on the bigger tires. Did the baggage compartment not have a top to keep stuff from tossing back into the fuselage? Or was that removed for inspection? Mine still has the original canvas baggage compartment. I too use mine as a pickup truck for groceries and such.

      There should be something back there. The stock configuration is the canvas "bag" with snaps to hold it in place.
