National City: Arson to Gas Line 01192022 (UPDATED)

DETAILS:
Someone lit flammable material on fire on top of a natural gas line along the street. The gas line was protected by a metal cage but had there been any kind of gas leak, a possible disaster could have taken place.
A Good Samaritan used his skateboard to push the burning material off of the gas line/cage. Police officers arrived and used a fire extinguisher on the remaining material that was on fire, and then the fighters arrived. The NCFD Fire Investigator will be notified of the incident.
UPDATE: Many viewers are telling us that this is a water line and not a gas line. I ave no clue and repeated what I was told by the Police.

There is a utility access right beside the water pipes in the cage. Could this be where the gas line is accessed? Or is this for internet service?

Looks like they washed whatever was set on fire. Probably going to see if they can figure out any clues. If there are a lot of these fires happening, they want to know if it is one person, whatever.

I agree. This is the second time he could have stopped a fire with an extinguisher. I commented and he indicated he did not have one. Let’s hope the day doesn’t come when he could save a life and doesn’t have one. He wouldn’t be able to sleep after that.

Nope, definitely water. You can even see the water meter box on the ground right next to it. Plus you'd never see gas run in copper pipe with backflow preventers like that.

@@joesmoke9679 Right - the water meter box, like I said. The BFP and relief valve are always above ground. Virtually the only time you see gas lines come above ground is at the regulator and meter riser, which is typically up against the building itself.
I've noticed that the Title to this video has not changed since it is well known now that this is a water back-flow and NOT A GAS LINE.

@@joesmoke9679 you keep saying this, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s a backflow reg for water lines, they look similar to gas risers, but there’s never ever going to be a gas riser near the street without some form of protection around it like barrier posts.

I had to react efficiently and quickly as possible. True I could've pushed it further but my main concern was to get it off the pipes before it spread

I’ll debunk it, I work for SDGE in the gas department. It’s a water back flow reg, our lines are never ever enclosed by a theft proof cage. They have to be accessible in an emergency situation.
