I have struggled with eczema since BIRTH... My derm said i will never get rid of it, just make it less bad. Here are things that helped my skin get a lot better:
    1. Don't cleanse your face in the morning since you already wake up with dried out skin. Just rinse with lukewarm water and put on a moisturizer and sunscreen.
    2. As Dr Dray already mentioned, keep your skincare routine at a BARE MINIMUM. I know this is hard for skin care enthousiasts but since our skinbarrier is compromised, using a lot of products can really aggrevate your skin. Also, exfoliate the skin only once a week AT MAX with a gentle exfoliant like 2-5% lactic acid or urea. Since i cut down my skin care routine to only cleansing (evening), a hydrating serum (evening) and moisturizer (and SPF in the morning), my skin is less aggrevated.
    3. Use a very gentle face cleanser like the La roche Posay Toleraine cleanser.
    4. Cut out fragrance in your skin care.
    5. For the body, use a very gentle soap-free, fragrance-free body wash like the Eucerin body washes or use shower oils and only wash your armpits with a gentle body wash.
    6. Use a thick body cream everyday after showering. The Eucerin Urea body cream saved my life. I heard it's not available in the US but you can order it on European online farmacies that ship worldwide like Vicnic
    7. Take fish-oil supplements (Omega-3). The fatty acids help your skin retain moisture.
    8. Get a hydrocortisone cream from your derm to use on itching areas.
    9. Make-up can have irritating ingredients so if you want to use make-up, search for products that are really eczema friendly. I use the NYX Bare with me Tinted skin veil. Guys, the ingredientlist is basically a moisturizer!! It has been soooo gentle on my skin, i really recommend it. No fragrance, no drying alcohols, EU-allergen free and it has some soothing ingredients like cucumber extract and aloe.
    10. I know everyone in the skin care community HATES coconut oil, but for us people with severe eczema DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE IT. When the eczema on my face gets really bad, i use a layer of coconut oil on my face after moisturizer in the evening. It really really helps with softening the dry patches and itching. I stopped using coconut oil because of skinfluencers online, and my eczema got really bad for a while. I went back to using it and my skin got a lot better. So don't be afraid to use it if you have really dry skin!!
I hope this will help someone

My 3 yr old has struggled with eczema since birth. Some of my personal tips for your kiddos:
•100% cotton pajamas worn INSIDE OUT (the seams can be irritating!)
•Invest in special eczema clothing - pull on sleeves that cover the limbs completely (or just the joints.) Having that extra layer on the itchiest spots helps protect while scratching. Shirts with fold over mittens were a lifesaver overnight, when my little one's eczema was at it's worst at age 1.
•Try not to use anything on yourself that could irritate your child. Our entire family now only uses fragrance free products.
•Huggies special delivery diapers are THE SOFTEST diapers in existence.
•Zyrtec - if your doctor says it is safe.
    In my skin care arsenal:
    Aveeno eczema therapy cream
    Cerave eczema creamy oil
    Cerave healing ointment
    Exederm flare cream
    Aveeno baby eczema cleanser
    Vanicream shampoo and conditioner
    Organic jojoba oil
    Colloidal oatmeal (for bath)
I also have topical steroid treatment from his derm, but only use it sparingly for flare ups. I was apprehensive to use steroids and wish I'd tried it sooner.
Good luck to those that are struggling!

These are great tips! As an adult with eczema (on and off since childhood), I would also like to recommend:
-Desert Essence fragrance free shampoo (it actually cleans the scalp! A problem I find with truly fragrance free shampoos is they don't clean well or have other unpleasant quirks. I find the vanicream free & clear shampoo to be oddly sticky)
-Acure Seriously Soothing Lotion. I could not believe that this lotion actually helped to HEAL my eczema outbreaks when used for a few days, 2-3x per day--Usually lotion is more preventative or just helps keep patches from getting any worse. I use this lotion as a first line of treatment for mild to moderate patches of eczema before resorting to steroid cream.
-First Aid Beauty Ultra Healing lotion also helped in a similar way to the Acure lotion, but it is more expensive
-fragrance free laundry detergent and dryer sheets (if you use the latter at all--I had a derm tell me dryer sheets leave crystals on garments and inside the laundry machines that can agitate eczema), or unscented dryer balls. I got overconfident after having no eczema outbreaks for several years and started using scented detergent... big mistake. It triggered the worst flare I've had as an adult

I’ve used the Aveeno product you mentioned and others from Aveeno for years now and it does wonders for me. When my daughter was small I used to cry each time we bathed her knowing she was about to scream and cry because it burned. (Learned she could not use any soap the hard way. She only had oatmeal baths, rinsed her off, slathered on Vaseline, then patted her dry. It was the only thing she didn’t scream for.)
Household cleanser: vinegar only on floors. (She walked before she crawled started at 7 months, I truly think it was because the carpet irritated her and she just hated being on carpet)
Laundry: dr. Bonners, no fabric softer. (Could not line dry clothes out side, the allergens outside made it worse.) also, remember your clothing not just your child’s will effect them and bedding.
Winter: if we bundled her up in cold weather it was horrid. We keep the house on the cooler side. If she sweats she cries because of burning. (Beware when she was small had someone at Walmart come up to me I went to school with and tell me my child needed better winter clothing it was to cold outside she was going to get sick. I told her you get sick from germs not from being a little cold. I did not let her freeze but we found a balance where she would not get to warm under so much clothing.)
Clothing: natural fabrics only! No lace, no wool, no scratchy fabric. Let them tell you it is scratchy cause she was much more sensitive to it than I. Also be careful with stitching it can effect you too. How tight it is can be a tigger. She wore/wears flip flops most of the time, even in winter because shoes and some socks caused flare-ups.
Diapers: we could only use cloth diapers.
Mowing: close all windows, she did not play outside for the day. (Just 1 of many triggers)
Swimming: we used sunblock outside but we would also smoother her in Vaseline as a barrier for the pool chemicals in the water. The only outside body of water (ie. lakes river) that did not bother her to bad was ocean, often times it even helped. Doc said it was because of the salt and ph.)
Much is trial and error. My daughter was very severe and as an 18 year old she maintains with flare-ups. (I had a doctors note from her dermatologist and allergist I had to take to school because she brought a clean sheet to school every day so when they went outside to play or played on the carpets she would lay out the sheet if her and her friends wanted to sit on the ground. And yes school made me have a note from the doctor in order for her to be able to do this.)
Remember when skin is damaged (especial kids/they can get nasty playing) they are prone to and more susceptible to skin infection!. I didn’t take her childhood away, she played got dirty stank, and yes it effected her skin. I would cry with her as she got flare up, and took baths. But I would explain unfortunately she would always have this and we just had to figure out a way to balance it out. With the help of her doctors!
    Hoped this helped someone.

    Absolutely loved the tips.
What you said at the end is so true, it is just learning the tricks as you go of what works for you and what are your personal irritants. Its a journey and after living with it for 22 years, I have worked out what most of my irritants are and now am able to find ways to avoid or manage when I come in contact with them.
I thought I would watch this to learn some more about my skin, and you have confirmed my theories of what causes a lot of my eczema and proved I'm not crazy haha! I changed from my favourite summer denim shorts to a lighter loose-fitting pair a couple years ago because the fabric was irritating my skin. Living in Australia the extreme temperatures is what gets to my skin most of the time, I love Autumn and Spring in the mild temperatures as my skin is the happiest. Also, I work on a farm and have adapted to wearing gloves when working with sheep as wool is also a really bad irritant.
Also swimming I learnt at a very young age is a bad irritant, especially in a chlorine pool, definitely need the rinse after or my skin hates me for a few days.

Amazon has a ton of brands and you don't have to spend a lot. Not only does it help with your skin but I've noticed that I'm waking up without dry eyes like I used to. Dry and puffy eyes were becoming an issue for me and I think it was due to allergies and room temperature due to heating in the winter. I've been using the humidifier for only about a week and I wake up feeling just generally better now not to mention the benefits it's giving my skin.

When I was younger, the dermatologists I went to would only offer cortisone creams as a solution, and so I'm only just now finding out about other tactics besides those that work for me. Oddly enough, I notice the number 1 trigger for my eczema is heat and humidity. Though I keep to a good routine, I can get away with food triggers, lack of sleep, not moisturizing, or even using scented moisturizers without much trouble during the winter, but the when the cold goes away and temperatures start climbing, I'll start breaking out.

I'd also like to mention that my son can't tolerate a lot of the creams made for eczema. He couldn't even use cerave. We did discover one that works great for us but not many people know about it. It's called Triple Cream eczema care by Summers laboratories. It's very thick so a little hard to spread and a little greasy but very minimal ingredients and helps the itch. I think it has some oatmeal ingredient in it. For any one who's looking to try something new because other ones irritate.

Doctor, I left a comment about 3 months ago, and wanted to update you.
My eczema seems to have healed. I think that the credit goes applying moisturizer after showering, while the skin was still moist. I kept applying until the moisturizer dried up as a thick dry layer, so that it would strengthen my skin. This layer helped dry flakey skin to stay on, which helped the skin to stay stronger. I'm so relieved.
Also, I washed my thin skin very carefully to avoid washing away loose skin.
I noticed that my legs don't seem to swell as much.
All of my ideas were inspired by videos from you and other content creators. Thank you so much!

Hey Dr Dray! I love your videos and I want to thank you a lot for educating us to take care of our skin properly! I have a quick question. I’m currently using Epiduo Forte and I moisturise a lot before applying the product and when I am not using it. Now I have flaky skin, especially when Epiduo dries out a pimple, but lately it’s been crazy as it seems like my face is continuously exfoliating. Now, I know that this is something normal when on Epiduo, especially at the beginning of the treatment, but would you recommend me to do something else besides using sunscreen, moisturising and cleansing my skin in order to avoid excessive exfoliation? Thank you!

I have learned many of your tips and warnings just by paying attention to breakouts after certain behaviors or exposures. 1. Use tissue to clean off excess flakes or dead skin
    2. Apply Eucerin Eczema Relief cream
    3. Apply another layer of cream on top which is Eucerin Foot cream 10%Urea
Sometimes i would seal them with vaseline.

I’ve had exzema my whole life of almost 62 years. I grew up with it and didn’t know anyone else who had it. Steroid cremes are the only thing that really work. I do use Elidel and Protopic as adjunct therapy, but moisturizer never helped in a flare up. It gets better in the summer. I think having some humidity in the air helps as well as wearing less/lighter clothes.
