I am jealous of your loose soil. I have to dig my carrots out with a trowel due to my clay soil being heavy even with years of amendments.

We are blessed with sandy soil but I swear it eats all my organic material I put on the garden, it's a ton of work keeping beds topped off because of how fast it's consuming it

Cut the tops off of the carrots, about a half-inch to an inch, and replant them and you'll get seed in the spring. Then you don't waste the carrot but you still get the seed.

I grow my garlic in a 3x6 raised bed with at least 4 cloves per square foot. I amend my soil with chicken manure compost and potting soil from my emptied containers. I cover with a couple inches of straw and forget about it until spring. In June, after I harvest the garlic, I amend the bed again and plant winter squash. It works pretty well for me.

Rachel, I am just addicted to you and Todd and this channel! I live in Philly now, but I was born and raised in Michigan (and certified Master Gardener in MI). I can’t do much gardening anymore due to a disability, but I love watching you pour so much love and energy into your garden and harvests, and preserving. I just love you guys. Thank you for so much enjoyable and informative content!

@@1870s Rachel, the Master Gardiner program *is* impressive, but you are MORE impressive!
You are my very favorite kind of gardener- knowledgeable, for sure, but most of all ENTHUSIASTIC! When I watch you harvest your carrots or your SWEET POTATOES, it makes me want to cry!
I’ve worked with lots of gardeners over the years and I can tell you this from my experience:
You are (to borrow one of your favorite words) AMAZING!

  • @Emeraldwitch30

Ive never tried fall peas but there are about 7 plants from my spring planting that replanted themselves(I let my peas go to seed for this coming year, just in case of another seed rush like this year).
I have to say I havent dobe much cleaning out there either as the plants on the tunnel and other trellises were still going until just last week.
But the chickens did get a lot of little green tomatoes the past few weeks.
I did have a couple experimental plants (like 2 or 3 of each) of beans. Turtle beans and mung beans. I ended up with a somewhat nice harvest from both kinds of beans so will be putting them in a bigger amount next year.
I was really excited that I could grow mung beans here in MI.
If i can grow enough to make my winter sprouting needs a reality it will be worth the garden space.
I also grow garlic where ever I can plop some in. My great grandparents brought walking onions and hardneck with them when they immigrated here.
I do plant a few soft neck types but only because the cloves from the store are sprouting and why waste them.
I do allow a few of grandmas garlic set topsets and I sprinkle them back into my flower beds for wild back ups to my harvest beds. They grow themselves and self seed all throughout the herb/flower beds, and even with neglect I have been able to harvest if I need extra that year. Sure the wild ones are not huge but they still taste wonderful.
Tatsoi is my new favorite Asian green. And I'm still harvesting little ones that self sowed when I was winnowing the seeds this year. Along with the bazillion lettuce starts from winnowing my seeds.
If you plop a few bales of straw over your carrots they should stay nice in the ground until needed in the winter but that can be a pain to harvest in deep winter.
I'm thinking about making tops for my raised beds to see if I can get cartots and parsnips to winter over for harvest as needed.

I’m surprised you put the garlic straight in the ground, wondering about your yearly spring floods? I though you said you were going to mound up your soil so it wouldn’t get flooded again.
Lovely carrots! I’m as excited as you are about them! Do you remember what the date was when you planted them? Id like to do that next year. I have some planted in my greenhouse and they are little sprouts, not growing very fast. It’s an experiment, we’ll see if we get anything. They’re covered during the night with frost cloth and I have lights at night and a propane heater in there.

Nice carrots! Here in Minnesota our garlic needs to get in by mid oct and I missed the deadline this year. We are zone 4 and our frostline goes 4 ft deep so they wouldnt get enough of a start. However I do have some garlic left over that I am still going to plant this week, and mulch heavily and hope for the best. It is mostly an experiment, so what can it hurt? The only thing left in my garden is some kale that is still getting some new growth even after two 4 inch snows, a few super heavy frosts and a few days down to 4 degrees. Im watching to see how long it will grow and produce for us. I had no idea that you would be zone 6 up there! I thought you had the same cold that we have here. Always learning! Thanks for the garden stuff!

What about that Tatsoi? I grew that this year and it was good in the beginning but what I froze taste like horseradish. It was sweet in the beginning of the season like spinach. I tried to make artichoke spinach dip with it this week from the freezer and wow it did not taste good. What is your best recommendation for spinach in our area?

Just went to a county extension class on planting garlic, They advised not putting bone meal on garlic or any edible plant as there is a danger of getting mad cow disease. Don't know if this is true or not.

Very nice carrots! I should try a second carrot crop next year. I live in zone 3/4....I got my garlic in before winter came and gave us a deep snow pack and very cold.....THEN.... I received in the mail a shipment of garlic I forgot about....now the snow is all but gone and will b 60-70 this week....so a perfect unplanned experiment ....I will plant about 60 cloves of garlic about a month later than the first planting. Excited to see if there is a difference. All those dusty fertilizers u put on, are they all organic? Either way, r u a bit concerned about breathing in any of that dust floating in the air?

      Yes completely organic, I wasn't worried, but I'm not a worrier 😊

I planted my garlic about a month and a half ago they are already coming up. Did I plant them too soon? It is now October in zone 7b

When ordering your seeds, how many packets of seed do you order per vegetable? Example: black beans, how many packets do you order? Do you take into account them not producing something?

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 4 роки тому

It depends on how much of a certain vegetable you want to harvest, how many people will you be feeding? And what variety of each thing? And how many seeds in a packet? There are a lot of variables. You can google a lot of the info you need.
