In an earlier comment I told you about our Christmas with a special forces team. They are so close to my heart. But now knowing you became a part of the Queen’s guard, I’m very impressed. Good for you!!!!!!!
Thanks Shoan. I loved my job and I'm rather lucky to have had a working life where I enjoyed getting up in the morning and doing it. Makes living all the more special. Thanks for the comment.
I'm just about to become a civvie and now that montage makes me want to join up again and get back on QCS. Awesome tours buddy. That said, there's bits of me I wish I could get as stiff as my knees! So maybe pounding the square again isn't the best idea lol. Loving the channel Chris. Gleaming!!!
Thanks Micky. I know what you mean about aches and pains and being stiff! I need assistance to stand up these days. I need to hang on to something. 2009 was a great tour. Last tour as WO killed my body. Music, I think aligns with the montage. Thanks for watching and your support mate.
I thought you said you were ex service big man, the fence walkers are a bit of a stretch on that... 😉 👍 Just kidding and much respect from an ex RHF crayon eater. No doubt Ill eventually see what you name her, thank you both for your time in service of our Queen and also for sharing your journey here with us. All the best from Scotland
Brilliant VLog Chris.... I’m catching up on them all and I’ve enjoyed most. I’ve known you for over 20 years and you possibly remember when we first met when I offer my suggestion for the name of the boat..... I suggest the name ......... “Blinkey Blimey”
Hi Keith. 20 years have flown. Blinkey Blimey features in a later video as it happens. Name reveal will come in the near future….in May. The videos get better.
Thanks Stephen. Whatever was an on the spot thought which I am seriously still considering. In Slow Time still beats other suggestions but, as I said, there are some bright people out there. I'll vlog the final name in time with my thoughts on some of the other suggestions. It might change yet!
Hi Chris. Another great vlog. Your reflection on your time in the military brought back some fond memories of my 20 years in the South African Defense Force ( Infanterie ret. 1994) Stick to something like " In Slow Time". It says it all. Regards.
Thanks Tom. It was a useful exercise to ask the audience as engagement has gone up and some great ideas and thoughts. I’ll vlog my thoughts and the final name. It may change yet.
I have found in life the first thing or name you think about is the best . So I suggest that's what you go for. "In Slow Time".....great. I suspect from the Montague you where RAF regiment? My time in the RAF was at the controls of a Shackleton during the cold war. Fun times. Really looking forward to seeing your future and wish you all the best and stay safe. Regards, A.
A spur of the moment thought. The best ones often happen that way. There are some great suggestions. Pleased I asked the audience! Thanks for watching/commenting Bob.
Thanks Dave. Whatever, will make people smile I think as they pass on the tow path. It might mean that they ask a few questions and make a few quips that I’ll have to feign and smile as if it’s the first time I’ve heard that: Like your last name attached to great speakers. Lost them in separation but now can’t fit them on the boat anyway! I’ll vlog the final name in due course. Thanks for your support on both names and asking the audience has offered food for thought.
Chris, loved your video. 🌟 Yes your boat’s name should be precious to you and what’s made you who you are 👍. I was looking for a little white arrow to show where you are. I remember that display for the Queen, it was amazing 👏. My dad was in the RAF. It was precious time Terrific time for you waiting for your own boat, you’re just going to SO love the life 😀🍻 Joan
That display was the last one where pyrotechnics were allowed to be used inside an arena. H&S police caught us up. That was a great display, a bit of choir and the music made it impossible for the BBC to edit us out. They had to televise the full display. The plan worked. I was in some of the montage clips. All pace stick people were me, even the nasty shouty man. Dreadful. I'll let all know my final answer after asking the audience soon. It may yet change due to changing circumstances. Time to think before the paint goes on. Thanks Joan.
Thanks Steven. Ah Yes. The Crab is more liken to a sea-food restaurant. Not sure why we were ever called crabs when the drill of side paces left or right March is the same as the army. Time and nostalgic names keeps the story going. There’s plenty of other phrases that have stuck I’m sure and having the true meaning lost in the sands of time. Thanks for watching.
Slow time is a wonderful name. My wife and I are Snow Patrol fans and our song is Chasing Cars so we're thinking of naming our boat (in a couple of years) "Lets Waste Time".....
They're both great songs and Chasing Cars has thoughtful lyrics Great cinema-photography on Run which I think is my favourite, done very well by Leona Lewis - X Factor. Great name for the boat too.
Hi Chris. Really enjoyed the vlog and the (very pleasant) task of trying to decide on a name for the boat - kind of brings the whole thing closer to actually getting in and on to the water I think. The Military excerpts took us back as we spent almost 10 years as civilian support on a base in Germany - best time of our lives as a family with the most professional people we've ever met. Love the idea of "Oh Whatever.." as a possible name, but can't get away from "Slow Time" as the name we would nominate. Sums up the chance to live life in the way and the pace of your choosing after a period when that was more difficult to achieve. We're secretly envious ! Great vlog - looking forward to all that follows. Thanks. George and Trish - CaravanningMacs
Which camp were you at in Germany. I was at Laarbruch for 4 years. 86-90. Loved it. Naming the boat for me should have a meaning. ‘Oh Whatever’ is a good name. In Slow Time has meaning. I have something else in mind too. Your right about time moving on. I think the Fit Out will happen relatively quickly. It’s a standard fit out by comparison to the boats The Fit Out Pontoon have done recently. Thanks Trish and George for watching and your support.
Morning Sir, 3 years ago you certainly got more ballast for your buck - I'll see myself out :) my names in the hat for boaty type names 1. Slow time Clean lines 2. Just passing time 3. Knot Shore Have a fantastic week.
Very good, Christopher. Yes, the band was Orange Juice! Not sure whether to ask here or ask you on Messenger or indeed just let me know if you’ll be discussing it at some stage but I want to ask, will you have a “home” marina for Doctors and dentists and banks and for parking your car etc etc and for picking me up when I visit for a pint!?
Currently have a home address for registration of doctors and dentists. Although I doubt I’ll use them regularly - maybe the dentist. Hardly ever used the medical services when in the mob so hopefully that trend will continue. Parking the car - won’t have one. I’m planning to sell it. I plan to continuously cruise which means I won’t have a permanent base/marina. If you come to visit, arrive at Heathrow and taxi/bus to The Swan and Bottle in Uxbridge, - about 6 miles away. The Grand Union is about a boat length away. Just give me sufficient notice to get there.
I think you should name your own boat tbh. I love the whole ‘slow time’ name concept and is perfect for you! It is your boat and your journey I think you should name it too! Xx
It was an opportunity to engage with the audience Ali. There were some great suggestions too. There might be a slight twist in the name of the boat thing. I’ve got time as it’s one of the last things to happen. Thanks for your support mate xx
Ah…. Now that’s good. Thanks Russel. Like it. I’m going to go through the answers from asking the audience and there may be a twist as I’m considering a name or too. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Joel. I mentioned in a comment about Gin. I might need a Casevc after sinking a bottle or when I’m older. Reference to being poorly though, I think. I’ll do a vlog on the answer. Wait out. Thanks for the comment.
Whatever. Great name Chris. Spelt Woteva. A bit like some other boats I’ve seen. Owamya and Weytamo. Great names. Lol House should be exchanging in the next few days. So will be a serious about looking at some boats that are now coming on the market. Great vlog. :)
Vicky Pollard = Woteva. Wait-a-mo, got that one. Can’t work out the other. It’s a bit late perhaps. Good luck with the search. Be careful. I think there are boats out there with a bit of plaster hiding a sore which is waiting to burst if slightly picked. I don’t think it’ll be an easy ride. Some great suggestions on ask the audience. Pleased I did it. I’ll let you all know the final decision soon. It may be a complete change!
Well done again, I do like your vloggs so entertaining no matter what the topic. As for the naming of your boat, I think it is so important that you name it yourself as you would always be comparing other names against it. Our boat is called Dunrentyn, I am happy with it also no other boat uses the name yet, so even better.
Thanks Carl. Always the plan but you never know what great ideas others come up with. A worth while exercise; asking the audience. I was right, some bright people out there. I’ll vlog some of the answers with some of my thoughts and the reason why I’ve chosen the name. It may change due to a change in my life. Having a one off name is good.
Thanks Rob. Are you going to change the name of your boat to Womble? The underground bit hopefully refers to tunnels and not under water! Like the wonder free bit as that is great for continuous cruising.
Yes Nigel I have. I would also do the filming as there are some companies that could do better. I’m too honest, I think that maybe the boat yard would be left with too many project boats. But then you could offer a design business and hire out the workshop and marina space for those wanting to project FitOut. Plenty of business ideas that could actually work. Came to me in a flash of inspiration, whatever!
Chris, enjoyed the vlog and life in the service. As a reflection on your time given to the pleasure of others, I would name your boat ‘My Time’ It brings in a new chapter of your life and has some meaningful reflection to your past, otherwise ‘In slow motion’ would be my other option.
Hi Chris - enjoyed the vlog, the drill took me back to my days at Lympstone all those years ago. Here's a name for you, 'Beyond These Things'. A bit deep but triggers thought and reflection. Stay safe matey.
Although you do deck drill, for good reason. My knees and back are in bits. 10 years at different times I spent on that Sqn. Great suggestions from ask the audience. Thanks for yours and I think the word Beyond makes us think; some, anyway. I’ll give the definitive in a vlog. Wait out. As always thanks for commenting.
Very entertaining and well put together. From your earliest vlogs I thought "now here's a bloke who's done a bit". It would be most fitting if HRH QE2 could find the time to smash the prosecco on your bow in recognition of services rendered.
I’ve been lucky enough to have had lunch with HM. I wonder…….not a chance. She enquired why I broke Changing of the Guard protocols and procedures during the meal. That made my heart miss a beat or two. Concentrates the mind I can tell you. Head of state enquiring about your judgement. I was congratulated after, which was a relief. Don’t ask. Perhaps if we met up for a beer.
RAF? I thought you said you were ex miitary😂😂 just started watching your vlogs and am finding them very interesting. Particularly liked your vlog on batteries. I have to say though I do like the way you say “the UA-cam” my kids have laughed themselves silly over me saying that for years 😂
Hi Josephine. Thanks for the comment and watching the tube. I appreciate the support. I note all the military is struggling at the moment. More people are leaving than joining. We're going to need to sign back up soon.
👍🏻 Hi Chris. Another great and interesting vlog. Nice to see the montage of some of your grand military days. Ok so I think you have explained your excellent reasons for your choice of boat name and I feel Slow time is so very apt, however I’d like to chuck an idea in: ‘MEAR SLOW TIME’ * Your name (plus the S from slow). It is what slow time means to you past and present *Mear = only/just (only travelling at a slow pace) * Definition of mear = boundary. You lived within the ‘boundary’ of the military and will be living within the boundary/limits/speed of the canals *Obsolete definition; dwelling near or on pond/lake (water connection) Have a fab week 😊
Oooo, there’s some thought gone into that. I appreciate that Jackie. I feel, due to asking the audience, there’s a vlog coming with the answer and going through, quickly, some of the suggestions. Yours will be part of it. Thanks.
It was a useful exercise to ask the audience. There are some bright suggestions and I like them. I’ll vlog the the suggestions along with some thoughts. Wouldn’t know how to pronounce the slow time musical meaning but thanks for the reference. I’ll have a go on the vlog for you to smile at my effort.
I think you should call your boat ‘My slow boat’ .. it suits you 😀 love your vlogs Chris.. very different and very quirky! There’s another name ‘Slow & Quirky’ 😊
Thanks Ron. I like it and there are some others that are great too. I was right to ask the audience. I’ll do a vlog on this with the answer. Thanks for contributing.
Guess which bits I liked best, Chris. Another riveting video. Slow Time or In Slow Time. ….. I’ll be surprised if that can be improved on. Having that pace stick thrust at you for some drill error or kit defect must have frightened the life out of the troops. Wonder if you can still do that or if you have to fill out a risk assessment before you can point your pace stick at someone or express displeasure vocally…. (“They don’t like it up ‘em”) It was interesting to see just how sensitive that boat with the stability issue was to your simply shifting your weight. Looking though the window, it was quite evident just how much the boat rocked as you shifted your weight. A nice illustration of the purpose of ballast. Interesting to see those different interiors. Thanks, Chris.
To be honest Martin, I did and no one complained. That said, it wasn’t a normal thing and the lads understood the reason if it happened. That stick has done me proud. If you were to see it now, it’s been polished to an inch on its life. It’s well worn and the engraving has worn out. Thanks very much. Little did I know how much use it would get. The project boat, I probably wouldn’t touch at the money expected. (27k) Whatever it cost to do it up, I don’t think you could command the same money. Cost of boat + improvement costs would not add up to a profit. But if needs must and you’re living in it too, perhaps. But better options out there.
Seeing those shiney boots reminds me of my short time in the air cadets. That and a complete lack of aircraft and flying is why I remained a slovenly civilian.
The boot thing is all in the prep. Bees wax burnt in and sanded down and then polished. I could do my boots from shit to great in 20 mins. Ok, not great, but passable. Was a pain as that was the standard every day. The time just king kit each day takes its toll. Thanks Steve.
There have been some great suggestions this week Michael. I still favour In Slow Time but I’m still contemplating another one. Thanks for watching and the comment.
It is my preferred name still Brian but there are options I’m considering. I’ll do a vlog in the near future just to talk about some of the great ideas. Thanks for watching.
Thanks John. It was useful though, to ask the audience. There are some great names and it’ll give me a vlog on its own to go through them with the definitive. It might be a complete turnaround but for good reason. A very good reason.
That was a job I would have liked to do, I think. It’s the battle of whits and teamwork I like. Never considered it at 17 though. Not sure about the marching though.😃
If that was your boat, I’m sorry if I was a bit harsh Nick. I recognise it may, with kit on it, self balance, but a few pots and pans may not be enough. How long ago did you have it?
@@chrismears-inslowtime well over 8 years ago Chris. Don’t worry about being Harsh when I had it it was tip top. It’s had two owners since then. The Galley has been changed. It used to have a breakfast bar on the right looking from the front of the boat. The Pullman was not there. I had a large sofa/bed on the left where you sat at the Pullman which worked well for when the kids came over to stay. The windows are a nightmare hence why with our new build we are going with thermal broken Double glazed windows. Basically the spec of our new boat has all the things we found a pain on that one. So diesel reflex stove instead of wood burner means less dust over every surface. 👍🏼
Boat naming. So many choices, Do you go for something such as a name of a person example Mary jo or Jessica or Dave. Do you go for the name of a relative? Is the boat going to even have a gender. Maybe a boat name that describes you or your hobby or personality? So many choices that you may become overwhelmed. Sometimes it may be best to just pick a name and go with it. Your parents picked your name and you just have to go with that. The following is a list of names that you could go with (disclaimer that some of these names may be what we are thinking about also lol): Chris Jnr Ray Mearcat Full Metal Jacket Sharply Dressed Man Millie Tree Danger Ross Slow Motion ISM (In Slow Motion) Das Boot Its Easy
I want to answer each sentence. Here goes, need to read both at the same time to make sense. Yes. Yes. Jo is ex wife, no chance, Dave is a great name for a dog, I’ve considered that. No. Too deep. Call it Grumpy then! Agreed. Agreed. Hmmm…..discuss, perhaps over a beer but essentially you’re right. Thanks for the name choices. Will discuss in a vlog, coming to a phone/tablet/computer or Television near you soon.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Jo is ex....was an unlucky guess with Mary Jo lol. Dave for a dog (fair enough). Will add Bob to the list as boats bob on the water lol. I dont think anyone thinks you were grumpy although they may now :)
Couple of points you will learn once you become a boater the boat that tilts you said needs trimming won't need anything once the new owner has moved all their belongings on board especially crockery and pots and pans and their tools.(some boats have the pump out toilet tank on one side and when full makes the boat lean bad design)You said there are lots of projects to be brought you are correct but once you are aboard your boat you will find that includes your own boat because before the first year is out you will either have started altering things in the boat or will be getting quotes for things to be altered a boat is never ever finished or never not needs a repair or adjustment to be made
Very good points. For me, a slight learn, I get pots and pans may make a difference and once all the kit is on, perhaps, in this case, they’ll need to be those heavy ones. Good point about the toilet and your right about bad design. A voice of experience but I do hope not to be doing too much self decorating as I’ve designed the boat. Let’s see. Always listen to experience.
I took part in the funeral of some admiral or other in Portsmouth many, many years ago. His coffin was placed on a gun carriage and we had to march alongside in slow time for about a mile. Good Times... not ;-)
I’ve done a few funerals. Not a gun carriage though. We’re you with or without arms. The difference being, reverse arms is a big ask on a long distance March.
Viewer #12 tonight. I was guessing that "Grumpy" was too obvious a choice. "In Slow Time" would be good in that somebody probably has "Silly Walks" already--and "Deep Thought' as well. "Whatever" is a great name for 'head' people. You know, the back-and-forth, the weighing and balancing of...everything. Something referring to dry humour might be fun too. The best names frequently involve a play on words, a pun, or even some dark humour. Nice little video at the end. I wasn't in the military, but when I started with the post office, uniforms had to look very good. As I worked with a lot of WW II veterans, there was a degree of military order. Relief staff especially had to look good, because one never knew what the next assignment might be. Sad to see that discipline lost over the years. I was one of the very last in the country to wear the old style uniform. One of my hat badges became a kilt pin when I retired.
Bit of nostalgic thoughts there Peter. Discipline has changed. A phrase we used ‘………when Ponticus was a Pilot’. I’m sure those in charge when I was 17 thought we were I’ll disciplined. I believe there is always a perception people of today are worse than we are/were, however, I think that IS the case now. Brighter academically, but lack common sense. Some great suggestions from ask the audience.
Had to look those terms up. Both musical words. You’ll note my signing voice in the video. Hmm…. Perhaps a musical name means I will need to back that up somehow. I don’t think I can. Great suggestions. I’ll do a vlog on this ask the audience.
@@chrismears-inslowtime I'm a retired RAF musician and was just thinking that 'slow time' would be perfect for life on a narrow boat. Good luck Chris, loving your channel!
You're right Phil. It did take some time to be honest. Equally, I did reference it a few times in replying to comments. So.....when I select the best names, I may do a vote to see what the most popular name of choice is or would be. I don't suppose Boat McBoatface people wrote a clause in the vote for the name but kissed it off anyway. At least I'll put a clause in. Thanks for the comment.
"Hey mate, which boat is yours?" "Every boat is my boat" There is a dirt road about a mile away from us. We always joke about buying a house on that road. So every time some asks for directions we get to say "turn left on every road". Yes. I have a weird sense of humor.
@@marcianelson4974 just to confirm your sense of humour. Road called Every Road. Turn left on Every Road? Like the thought. Like the humour…….that is, what I think the humour is. If not, I’m not all that switched on. Anyway. I’ll be please if your watching on Tuesday
Your right Robert. I considered that, but In Slow Time as a channel name, could still stay despite the name on the boat. I thought the ask the audience thing was a useful exercise anyway. There are some bright suggestions and I will confirm the final name in due course. Lots going on, not necessarily on the boat, although that is moving forward this week. Thanks for the comment.
Great choice Alan, has a good ring to it. I’ll give it some thought! I’ll do a vlog on this topic as there are some great suggestions and give the definitive. Thanks mate.
The decision to sell everything, leave a 'real home', quit our normal jobs, get rid of her car and my van and have a boat built was easy compared to naming the bleeding thing. I wanted initially to have it named after a list of either Pink Floyd or Genesis songs..... not a chance. Sheila wanted to name it from a long list her and her friends had come up with, deffo not a chance! In the end we left it to chance. On some obscure list written in 2019 we had the same words also written on a goodbye and good luck card from very good friends of ours. On it was an old Vdub Beetle with the registration plate........ Toodle - Pip and that is now the name of our 68 foot boat. I do like 'In slow time'. I suppose 'Laddy, get off my F*****g drill square'!! doesn't have the same ring to it.
I have said Get Off......Square a few times regardless of rank. There have been a few Majors, Sqn Leaders who have been asked/told to put their letter together in my office. Whilst they didn't stand to attention, they were left in no uncertain terms not to walk on the golden acre. They could of course march as it saves walking and if wanted to do, I would be happy to teach them how to do it properly! Toodle Pip. I've used that in my early days in the mob. Soon changed that term as a young 17/18 year old, I wanted to fit in. Toodle F******g Pip was bellowed out, who the f*** do you think you are...... and so it goes on. Funny. Uncomfortably numb, Marooned, Wearing the Inside Out, That's All, Follow You Follow Me, the list is endless. Great bands. Thanks for commenting Mark. The name is subject to change as there has been a significant change in my life. I'll reveal all in the appropriate video.
I haven't thought about cost of sign writer as I've not got a picture or anything big. Even the paint on the boat makes it easy as it's almost one colour. The other thing with At Ease, it's a bit too military. I don't want a peace protester having a pop. It can draw negative perceptions. I just want to keep my head down (ish) on the canals. Thanks for the comment.
Another enjoyable video, Chris. I'm not going to offer any names - the comments seem to be aligning with your thoughts (and it's your opinion that matters, after all). Was that you with the pace stick toward the end of the montage? If it isn't, you have a doppelganger. Take care.
The man with the pace stick throughout was me. Shouty, Pointy stick man also. I’m going to mount the stick somewhere I think along with picture of me and HM. Was lucky enough to have lunch with her. I’ll vlog the answer. Perhaps a twist in the tail but for good reason: Very good reason. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the idea Simon. We, in the boating world seem to be fixated by toilets but for me, the name ought to be something meaningful. I’ll let everyone know when the boat is in for painting.
U no there is joke names like "Don't call me Duncan" or "Pea in a pod" lol or a theme name like "The Water Guard" and have a water cannon on the boat or use your mum or grans name. I like the idea of having Guard in the name some thing like "The Slow Guard" or "The Water Guard" "Out Of Time Guard" "Out Of Step Guard"
Interesting view Rob. Old guard can be seen as not able to change and the term guard is about protection. I would have to analyse the main words for it to work with my philosophy. Thanks for commenting. I’ll make a video in this topic when I confirm the name.
Great name. I loved going to Holland too. I used to windsurf on the Dutch coast in the mid 80s and go to the local discotheques in the hope I would find a nice Dutch girl - never happened. I was too shy. The name on the T shirt may be another reason! Also, if everyone on the canal asks about the name, that may become a slight annoyance when I’m on a mission to get somewhere, which may force me to be rude, which I don’t like doing. I’ll do a vlog on the names. They’re great. Thanks for contributing.
Did consider it. However, we appear to not have a good record on social media. I’m looking at Regt colours on the tiller arm. Depends on cost though. Thanks for watching.
Slow Motion would be a good name. That boat will be listing for a reason, obviously it would have sat in the water nice and level for the previous owner. The list is probably the reason it's for sale. It's a shame you didn't tell us the prices of the other two boats.
I was conscious of that as I would talk about the price making it more negative. Project 27k - not worth it as it’ll need stripping and no guarantee it’ll be any good. Too much time and little profit margin. But if you do plan to live on it while doing it up, a possibility. Quirky 64k. Probably not worth the money, good boat, over priced. Wide beam 65k. Same as quirky.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Thanks Chris, interesting. I think you're right on all counts. As you say the wide beam would be too restrictive. If I had a canal boat I would want it to be able to go to as many places as possible.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Hi Chris, it was due to your military career, in fact we may have served at RAF Northolt at the same time from early 2010 to late 2011? Our new build is also very closely linked to my RAF Career, we have ordered No 216 from Briadbar Boats, but I can let you work out the rest! I have told you this before but love your approach to your vlogs, and if we get to meet at some time in the future on the system would love to buy you a beer.
It’s gotta be In Slow Time. She’s been In Slow Time since before the baseplate was cut. And it’s got meaning, which no other name will have. Go with your first instincts 🙂
I agree in the round. It was a useful thing to do regardless as there are some bright ideas. There has been a change in my life which may result in a change of name. It of course is profound as In Slow Time was the name prior to baseplate. I'll vlog the final name in a future episode. Not long now hopefully. Thanks for the comment and support Susie.
I’ve taken a liking to Gin over that past few years. Can almost polish a bottle in a day, or could easily if I got on one. Name of yacht, great. Apt for me too. On a canal……hopefully I’ll know where I am, unless sunk a bottle of gin! Thanks Stephen.
Great names, thanks Julie. I was conscious of not wanting to appear too military where there might be a peace protester who wants to have a pop. While I’m not overly concerned, making myself a target may not be useful. Yes, I’m on UA-cam but, few by comparison watch this channel. I’ll do a vlog on the names and give the definitive. Thanks for contributing.
Thanks Marcia. Now perhaps it’s my dreadful mind but anything with a floater May have reference to something else. I don’t think that was your intent, but if I’m thinking it, I’m sure others will reference it. I’ll do a vlog on this. It’s been a great exercise to ask the audience. Thanks for your suggestions.
I struggled with English at school let alone starting a language that clever people do. However I looked it up. Tarsus meaning slow, sluggish. tardy. late, lingering. dull, stupid, slow-witted. Perhaps you’re right after all. Thanks for the compliment Andrew😀
Indeed. I’ll probably stop off on a few of those places. Thanks Douglas. I’ll vlog the answer. May be a twist in the tail but I’ll explain. I’m in deep thought about it.
Hi, as you always say how your kids are going to visit and you made the boat long enough to take them with you at odd times , try and make a name that reference your kids, that way you always have them with you! Move the letters different orders see what you come up with, I always refere to my wife as honey so if something happened and I got a boat I would call it honey, then she is always with me , just a thought
Great suggestion. I was on the train yesterday going into ‘Town’ with a app thing and some random letters trying to get a name. I’m going to keep doing it for a while at least. Got a five a side team of kids. Far too many. Stand by, I’ll vlog the answer.
Thanks for watching Kev. I’m yet to do a reveal of the name. We’re 15 episodes ahead now and still people are asking. Also, it’s a good job as I’ve changed the name from the point of this video. Like your suggestion. There’s a Navy guy who has informed me of the meaning of crabs. True or not, but it’s got a ring of truth behind it, crabby, now I know what the potential meaning was/is, probably not. However, thanks for joining in. I do appreciate it.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Ah sorry to confuse but just a name suggestion .. subsonic 'cos narrow boats are slow - 66 for the boats o/a length & '"discuss" as it might be sometimes familiar around your local a bit ??
@@martinkavanagh9641 mate that’s good. I knew there were some bright people on that side of the Tube. Ask the audience: It’s been an interesting exercise. Lots of great names and how many people want to offer advice. Interesting also, not many more subscribers so it’s the hard core that have offered opinions and ideas. Discuss!
@@chrismears-inslowtime Actually .. despite my own suggestion .. I reckon "SLOW TIME WHATEVER" would be good for you provided YOU like it eh. Stay safe & be happy Cobber from The Hurunui NZ.
Someone earlier said first though is generally the best. Not sure speed of light unless it’s a light coloured boat or lights all over it. But that in itself offers me a thought. Thanks Russel. Stand by.
Great video Chris. I think "In Slow Time" is a great name probably the only name I can think of is "Cadence" which is still kind of in line with your previous life. Some of those other boats are pretty quirky. I am not fond of wide beams, it's like having a car that is too wide to take on the very narrow roads, all for maybe a little more comfort, better off buying a home. The single studio model is kind of cool, if your a single guy or gal with no kids only friends who could care less about having their own room it would be perfect. California is unbelievably expensive, so I can relate to the young people of today trying to buy a place in areas of the U.K., options are limited. A narrowboat is still a good option especially if you are resourceful enough to take on some of the work yourself. The other thing is young people these days are not really interested in buying a small home and settling down. If they have a job they can do anywhere or don't mind moving from place to place a narrowboat offers a comfortable way of life. I think it is important for these young people to look at their boat as a home first, investment second.
Home first, investment second. Agreed. The way of the world now appears to be about getting rich. But then you need to be rich to get a house. Even boat prices are such that it’s not a cheap option anymore or not as cheap as it used to be. The ‘Grey Pound’ have made their money and many have boats as a second home leaving todays generation struggling in so many ways. I’m going to make myself very unpopular. It’s not one persons fault, but I feel a lack of government strategy that is at fault. Some good name suggestions from ask the audience. Enough to do a video on it. Wait out! Thanks Paul.
Sooooo….Slow March is used in funeral processions. So my question to you now is In Slow Time……is this your idea of slowly heading off to the great beyond? Just kidding mate, you call your boat whatever you want it’s yours and is common folk can sod off.
Yes but if you’re carrying the coffin, it’s more of a slow walk, particularly if it’s heavy. I won’t be carrying mine so I’m going make sure I put on a shit load of weight prior to. Won’t be a military effort, so I’ll stay within bounds on weight. I’ll vlog the answers. Some of them are great and have a lot of thought.
Just kidding and much respect from an ex RHF crayon eater.
No doubt Ill eventually see what you name her, thank you both for your time in service of our Queen and also for sharing your journey here with us.
All the best from Scotland
Thanks Scott. Fence walkers on the outside however. Thanks for the support. Name has a bit of meaning behind it. Ep25 I think.
Excellent video. Love it.
Thank you Mishka.
Great vlog once again Chris i do like oh whatever made me smile keep up the great work
Thanks Stephen.
‘In Slow Time’ is a great name and very apt indeed. I had many a laugh naming a dog ‘ask it’ ……. never got boring.
Regards, A.
I laughed at that Jack. I’ll do a vlog on this topic. Always good to ask the audience. Some great suggestions. Wait out.
‘Whatever’ that did make me laugh. Love the thought of telling someone the name of my boat.
A spur of the moment thought. The best ones often happen that way. There are some great suggestions. Pleased I asked the audience! Thanks for watching/commenting Bob.
'Slow Time' is a great name for the boat. However, in our household, 'Whatever' gets the most points. Loving your vlogs Chris.
Chris great vlog as usual. You being a former RAF you could call it The Crab
@@chrismears-inslowtime Run is a great song and was used to great effect as the closing song of an episode of the TV show Rescue Me with Denis Leary
Morning Sir, 3 years ago you certainly got more ballast for your buck - I'll see myself out :) my names in the hat for boaty type names
1. Slow time Clean lines
2. Just passing time
3. Knot Shore
Have a fantastic week.
Some great suggestions from ask the audience. I’ll do a vlog on it in the near future. Thanks for yours. Agreed with ballast for you buck.
Speed of thought!
Ah…. Now that’s good. Thanks Russel. Like it. I’m going to go through the answers from asking the audience and there may be a twist as I’m considering a name or too. Thanks for the comment.
Another interesting vlog Chris. Really enjoying your journey 👍
Thanks Wayne. The answer will be vlogged. Have a plan how and hope all will enjoy.
Afternoon Chris
I would have Casevac
Lol
House should be exchanging in the next few days.
Nice vlog! I like the name 'Womble' - underground/overground wondering free!
Thanks Rob. Are you going to change the name of your boat to Womble? The underground bit hopefully refers to tunnels and not under water! Like the wonder free bit as that is great for continuous cruising.
Thanks for the great vlog Chris. Ever thought of becoming a second hand boat salesman.
As for naming the boat, Oh Whatever is a brilliant name
Thanks David. Like the ‘My Time.’ Stand by for the definitive. I’ll vlog the answer and the reason! Maybe a change brewing. Which mob?
Great video! I recently found your channel and am enjoying it.
Thank you. Welcome aboard.
Ok so I think you have explained your excellent reasons for your choice of boat name and I feel Slow time is so very apt, however I’d like to chuck an idea in:
‘MEAR SLOW TIME’
* Your name (plus the S from slow). It is what slow time means to you past and present
*Mear = only/just (only travelling at a slow pace)
* Definition of mear = boundary. You lived within the ‘boundary’ of the military and will be living within the boundary/limits/speed of the canals
*Obsolete definition; dwelling near or on pond/lake (water connection)
Have a fab week 😊
Oooo, there’s some thought gone into that. I appreciate that Jackie. I feel, due to asking the audience, there’s a vlog coming with the answer and going through, quickly, some of the suggestions. Yours will be part of it. Thanks.
'In Slow Time' is an excellent reference to the new way of life you are about to embark upon. Musically meaning 'Adagio'.
Thanks Vicki. The suggestion Slow and Quirky is a name I'd like, let alone the boat. Maybe not the slow..... Thanks for the comment.
In slow time is an apt name for your boat me old, keep what your happiest with.
(“They don’t like it up ‘em”)
It was interesting to see just how sensitive that boat with the stability issue was to your simply shifting your weight.
@@chrismears-inslowtime
I look forwards to seeing, in person, the well-used and highly polished pace stick mounted/displayed in your boat one day. 👍
In slow time sounds brilliant…..because that’s what you will be doing….
There have been some great suggestions this week Michael. I still favour In Slow Time but I’m still contemplating another one. Thanks for watching and the comment.
I like the name slow time
It is my preferred name still Brian but there are options I’m considering. I’ll do a vlog in the near future just to talk about some of the great ideas. Thanks for watching.
Great video!!! You just got yourself another subscriber :-)
Thanks w b. I appreciate it.
In my humble opinion, " In Slow Time" is a very apt name for your boat, As you noted in the vlog, a reference to your past - present and future.
Thanks John. It was useful though, to ask the audience. There are some great names and it’ll give me a vlog on its own to go through them with the definitive. It might be a complete turnaround but for good reason. A very good reason.
We used to march like that in the military too... ;-) (ex RN Submariner) :-)
That was a job I would have liked to do, I think. It’s the battle of whits and teamwork I like. Never considered it at 17 though. Not sure about the marching though.😃
The Galley has has been reconfigured and a Pullman dinner fitted but no adjustment for ballast since I had that boat. 🙄😎
I like "In Slow Time"
Thanks Harold. So do I but, a possibility of change is in the air. I’ll let you all know when the time is ripe.
The following is a list of names that you could go with (disclaimer that some of these names may be what we are thinking about also lol):
Chris Jnr
Ray
Mearcat
Full Metal Jacket
Sharply Dressed Man
Millie Tree
Danger Ross
Slow Motion
ISM (In Slow Motion)
Das Boot
Its Easy
Hello Mate I would call it “Arkish Surrish” a nod to 1sqn as we were always ready to move at short notice
Was that a C Flt thing Scouse? I’ll do a vlog on the definitive. Thanks for watching. Wait out.
Names for you Chris: "Andante" or "Adagio".

"Every Boat". That would keep everyone confused.
Indeed Marcia. Me included. Probably people will ask for the story. That’ll keep me busy talking to tow path observers.
When
"Hey mate, which boat is yours?" "Every boat is my boat"
There is a dirt road about a mile away from us.
"In Slow Time" would be both appropriate and you are already using it for your Blog.
"THREE OF US" that's me the wife and the dog.
Great name for you all Graham.
Morning Chris. Your boat's name should be a no-brainer from what I can see. How about "In Slow Time"?
Great choice Alan, has a good ring to it. I’ll give it some thought! I’ll do a vlog on this topic as there are some great suggestions and give the definitive. Thanks mate.
How about 'Hermit Crab'?
I.e. an ex Crab Fat getting away from it all :-)
I’ll add that to the list when I do a video about the final name that goes to paint. Thanks w b
Call it “Marching Orders”
Is that my marching orders Colin? It might be nice to have my voice as a horn. I used it to good effect on occasions, but perhaps too many expletives.
13:38 My proposal is what you said already: May Bee (bees appear in May.)
Joe. That was sharp.
At Ease - Shorter the name cheaper the sign writing and that will fit your new life-style
The golden acre
A note to the parade sq I assume. Good one Gary.
Name it "Lump On A Bog". 8 year-olds on the tow-path will get lots of giggles at the toilet-humour of the name.
Thanks for the idea Simon. We, in the boating world seem to be fixated by toilets but for me, the name ought to be something meaningful. I’ll let everyone know when the boat is in for painting.
I named my boat.
Don’t rush by
Nice one John. Aimed at the mad cyclists that don’t have patience with other tow path users perhaps! Thanks for the comment.
Hi Chris, you could call it "Rustig aan " its dutch, meaning take it easy would get you a lot of questions aboud te name of your boat
How about Rock Ape
How about “Rock up” ?
Now Dale, is that referring to Rock Ape or Rock as in music? Good name regardless. I’ll vlog the answer soon. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@chrismears-inslowtime or “Vigilo et Arceo” - I watch and ward.
@@dalejones4184 thanks for not making me look that up. The ‘Ad-hoc’ use of Latin makes it difficult 😀
@@chrismears-inslowtime I thought it was the QCS motto? LoL 😂
Sloe Time. For your gin palace
I have a friend with a yacht called "Where the fck am I" including the "u" and obviously not registered in UK.
I’ve taken a liking to Gin over that past few years. Can almost polish a bottle in a day, or could easily if I got on one. Name of yacht, great. Apt for me too. On a canal……hopefully I’ll know where I am, unless sunk a bottle of gin! Thanks Stephen.
At Ease OR Slow Squad
Great names, thanks Julie. I was conscious of not wanting to appear too military where there might be a peace protester who wants to have a pop. While I’m not overly concerned, making myself a target may not be useful. Yes, I’m on UA-cam but, few by comparison watch this channel. I’ll do a vlog on the names and give the definitive. Thanks for contributing.
" Wet Dream"
Good one Mike. I’ll add that to the list when I discuss my final decision. Thanks for watching and suggested name. 😀
Play on words, Mearander
Like it. I’ll add to the list for the vlog.
"Slow Float", "Slow Boat", "Slow Floater"
Thanks Marcia. Now perhaps it’s my dreadful mind but anything with a floater May have reference to something else. I don’t think that was your intent, but if I’m thinking it, I’m sure others will reference it. I’ll do a vlog on this. It’s been a great exercise to ask the audience. Thanks for your suggestions.
" In Tardus Tempus" if you are into Latin.
I struggled with English at school let alone starting a language that clever people do. However I looked it up. Tarsus meaning slow, sluggish. tardy. late, lingering. dull, stupid, slow-witted. Perhaps you’re right after all. Thanks for the compliment Andrew😀
Pound Drainer
Absolutely right about that.
PUB CRAWLER
Indeed. I’ll probably stop off on a few of those places. Thanks Douglas. I’ll vlog the answer. May be a twist in the tail but I’ll explain. I’m in deep thought about it.
Slow motion or maybe slomo or slowmo
There’s an idea. Relationship with boat and filming. Thanks Mark.
As an ex Matelot how about "crabby" as a name 🤔 😏 🤣
Thanks for watching Kev. I’m yet to do a reveal of the name. We’re 15 episodes ahead now and still people are asking. Also, it’s a good job as I’ve changed the name from the point of this video. Like your suggestion. There’s a Navy guy who has informed me of the meaning of crabs. True or not, but it’s got a ring of truth behind it, crabby, now I know what the potential meaning was/is, probably not. However, thanks for joining in. I do appreciate it.
'SUBSONIC 66 DISCUSS' 😛
Please discuss Martin. Not sure of the reference.
Sorry one more time,,, speed of thought! Speed of light, speed of sound ,,,, speed of thought equals slow!!!
