Yes, very much so, the ascent is steep, and if like me you have a bad knee, the additional weight distribution with the stick is good and also allows for more stability. Think of a table with two legs or a table with three. In hindsight, I was not fit enough at the time, and more than anything else I would recommend get fit before you do Kinabalu, it will make your climb much more enjoyable. No, its too close to the Equator. If it was in Europe or the US t would be. There was some ice up there.
