My favorite thing about Nihei’s art is that learning he was an architect explains a lot about his art when you look at his insanely detailed megastructures and then compare it to his… uh, lackluster rendering of human anatomy.
It's interesting how Nihei transitioned from the crosshatchy artstyle of Blame and Biomega to the more thin, slightly wobbly linework and stunning whiteouts dotted with detail somewhere in the middle of Knights of SIdonia and followed by Aposimz Both are cool and fit the places presented- the crosshatchy style mixing well with the dirty apocalypse of Blame and Biomega while the thin linework does exentuate the sheer emptiness of Aposimz surface
Oh hell yeah, one of my favorite manga finally getting the Owl treatment. Blame! will always be my favorite of Nihei's work, since I like the slow, brooding atmosphere of that one, but Biomega's just purely insane. Probably the fastest pacing I've ever seen in any manga, coupled with breathtaking visuals, and insane action! Now onto the video!
Yeah Blame! Is definitely one of my favorites. All of his stuff is really good I think. I would really like to see him do the artwork while someone else does the story. Think of the team combinations and the craziness that could result lol.
So I'm at 4:30 and talking about the "style" of writing, the way I interpret it is the plot isn't as important as the art you're currently looking at. It's kind of excuses to have certain subjects in the frame. I don't know if that's the intention, but when a work has a basic element that seems to be lacking or surface-level it's usually because that isn't the main focus. The pages you showed after you mentioned how odd the writing is, there were really nice action shots and dramatic frames. It felt like looking at a portfolio of an artist's work. 10:30 There it is.
I think the inspector looks like a Mashup of the repo man and Pavi from Repo!. Possibly the Joker from the time he cut his face off then wore it like a mask.
Yay Biomega! Love this series. Love Nihei's artwork. Didn't know he was an architect but it absolutely makes sense when you see his artwork, especially the backgrounds of the infinity city present in Biomega, and Blame!. Although the plot is close to impenetrable a lot of time, and sometimes the art has so much stuff going on I wish I had a poster size manga so I can tell what the hell is going on. That being said I still love the hell out of his work, and it's definitely a style all his own.
Sidonia no Kishi was a great read. The netflix anime is also surprisingly faithful, although the cel shaded cg animation style is slightly off-putting. I personally didn't mind the animation style, but I know it's a point of issue with some people.
Mahogany, is that character's name. It makes me think of Repo! The Genetic Opera, combined with some b-rate slasher where the guy wore a silver mask and used some edgy "mall ninja" knives. Struggling to remember that movie's name, but I remember it somehow had a sequel. I actually tried searching to see if that inspector was a reference to anything. Either my phrasing is off or there's an odd lack of info on BiOmega. Even the wiki has a major lack of info.
Maybe he should try making 2000AD stories. Like "ABC Warriors, Glimmer Rats, Rogue Trooper, Durham Red", unholy, in a positive way. Also, manga-creators should try WH40K.
This may be a bit off topic but is the window in the backround of your video possibly from the videogame "Nightmare Reaper"? Because i think it has a similar artstyle.
I suggest if you ever read it to read the Second Half first. By that skip the first chapter. The second half feels like the better way to get into the story. You can go back to the beginning an d treat it like a prequel.
The reference of the inspector may be the dollmaker from the batman comics. That and i think the singer of slipknot wore somethi g that looked similar.
(also you are wrong on kusarigama- it was a utility tool more than a weapon, and afterall just like all Ninja weapons: a repurposed farming equipment) The hooksword tho is for show

I absolutely love the "shocked Mr. Owl" model.
Fits so perfectly, doesn't it?
@@Koruvax Mrs. Owl did an amazing job lol
The design of the Inspector reminds me of the Repo men in Repo!the Genetic Opera
NEW OWL VIDEO, it's a good weekend ^w^
Personally the inspector looks like a Repoman from Repo the Genetic Opera.
especially looked like it at 18:37
Absolutely what I thought
No silent hill triangle head

Nihei is a Genius. Everything he does is fabulous… what is he up to now?!

I’ve found so many new manga I love through your amazing videos and channel, so huge thank you from me to you and the whole owl family 😊
Thanks mate!

I get hard spawn vibes and a tony bit of the batman who laughs at 18:48 personally. I doubt thats what you were thinking but figured id share
It's my first time seeing Mrs Owl 🦉 she looks great can't wait to see what the video is gonna be like. Really excited ✨

Keep the videos coming!
Also: i totally agree with the paralel with SAMURA’s « Blade… » which is an absolute MASTERPIECE. Nihei & Samura are my 2 personal G.O.A.T.s 🤩
Also, thanks for covering this. I had not seen an art style so similar to my own, and the story is brilliant.
Hey bro any chances you will make a video on mpd psycho btw love that you made a video on biomega 🙃
I’m a long time lurker, love your videos!
You can definitely tell that the Succubus and Hitman mangaka is heavily inspired by Todd McFarlane. I'd recommend checking it out.
One of my favorite manga, that is not really covered up on the internet. Thank you very much !
18:54 He looks like Pyramid head from Silent hill.
the guns remind me of the guns used by the X-laws faction from Shaman King
Also, the health inspectors design seems to be quite inspired by both Nemesis from RE3 and Cenobites from Hellriser
Yeah, there's something specific though, it might well be the faceless Joker from the New 52 Batman era.
You and Mrs Owl have the cutest interaction
Woohoo papa owl's back

Apropos Dorohedoro I would love if you would do deep dive. One of my favourite mangas of all time
Actually, the inspector looks like a "Batman who laughs" for me
I was thinking faceless Joker XD
Could the reference possibly be equilibrium?
Ooh! I...literally never thought of that.
The butcher from midnight meat train, maybe?!
Ooh there's a film I haven't seen for a while.

I don't think I know what the design is based off of but I can tell you that it looks like a character in dead by daylight
Bubba/Leatherface

Yes! Well spotted!
Tsutomu Nihei is my fucking favorite! If yall enjoy Biomega, you definitely need to read "BLAME!". Guaranteed not to disappoint!

The inspector looks like the pale lady to me, idk, just gives the same vibe, from scary stories to tell in the dark
16 years in Japan and I have not seen a Jason themed diner
It's not common lol, it just exists. There's also a Jason themed resort!
kiiiinda loooks like joe the plumber joker, when he cuts his own face off and reattaches it with hooks lol
I also thought faceless Joker, but not sure if timeline matches up.
Possibly the keeper from evil within

Apparently it isn't and yes, that's weird.
I hope they release a Biomega master collection in English, I really don't want to drop $200-$300 on the six volume set of manga.
Yeah :|

Damn my ass was about to click off until your girl set you straight... That's a keeper right there

have you read the sequel to Starving Anonymous? its on another level
