The Wrong Direction for iPad? iPadOS 16 Stage Manager

  • Is iPadOS 16 Stage Manager with external display support the wrong direction? When it comes to the iPad, we’ve been wanting external display support for a long time, but Apple has delayed this feature up until WWDC 2022.
    However, it appears that the M1 iPad Pro or latest iPad Air is the device of choice for this benefit and this is leaving many users in the dust if they in fact wanted to be able to take advantage of Stage Manager. Is the M1 really the minimum requirement to support external displays?
    iPadOS 16 Beta has been fun to test, and I know there have been leaks about Apple correcting this issue, but will they actually follow through on supporting my devices?

    So, the stage manager works without the magic keyboard as long as you have the keyboard and mouse connected? That’s a relief! I choose to have the smart keyboard cover and magic trackpad becaus of the weight. If I may ask, what did you do in 1:47? What button to activate the full external monitor support? Thanks for the awesome video!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      That’s correct. And the only thing I was doing was connecting that keyboard to the iPad.
      It’s a wireless keyboard that has Bluetooth, so I was just switching it from a computer over to the iPad to show you that once the keyboard and mouse are connected, then it flips to full display without the bars on the sides.

      @@KevinRossRN Thanks for the swift reply.., and your video confirm the question I have been asking for some time. I always think the logic behind connecting to external mouse/keyboard is simply to reach out beyond the iPad screen, and not to promote magic keyboard. It amaze me why there is no UA-camr that discuss this very important point.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      Exactly. I think Apple intended to have a better user experience by requiring a mouse and keyboard as it would likely be pretty difficult to navigate across a screen with just the touch functionality. Possible, yes, but likely not ideal without the mouse/keyboard.

    Thanks for making the video! Hit the nail on the head with what people are expecting of the IPad and what it could be. However, IPads are made for the creative workflow and entertainment so maybe the external display support is more important to the customer base then we think. I’ve been using my iPad Pro 12.9 as my main computer and you learn the work around and I still love it (besides battery life). You think IOS 16 beta worth a shot or wait ? Thanks again man

      As far as the beta, update 2 is more stable, but Stage Manager is still a bit of a mess as they work out some of the kinks.
      I’ve been running Teams and Zoom meetings and doing general tasks on it and have had one crash, which was odd because the crash happened when I removed it from the Magic Keyboard. I wasn’t even doing anything with it. Just removed it 🤷‍♂️

    Great conversation Kevin. I think Apple pushing to make the iPad a conventional computer replacement would be a mistake. I own and use both an iPad and a MBP. Both are invaluable and both fit a niche in my life. Is one better than the other...nope. iPad for my daily business carry. Email, notes, reminders, calendar, numbers, safari are mostly what I use. I manage a customer base for a manufacturer. The MBP gets used to stream multiple things to multiple displays, Photo and Video editing and tasks where multiple screens are important. My want with iPadOS is more about making the apps I use more feature rich and seeing and improvement files so it's more finder like. Cheers!

      Another slam dunk use case. Being in healthcare (patient side and business side), I find the iPad to meet all of those needs because the apps we implement, or even have a hand in creating, have delivered for us without fail.
      It is nice connecting an iPad to a display to be able to see data, patient imaging, etc in the full aspect ratio I’d get on a laptop, but for video editing I much prefer the MBP as you were saying. 😉🤘

    I have been an avid iPad Pro user since it’s introduction in 2015. I will admit the Mac can be used for some tasks, the iPad can’t, but I still prefer the iPad experience and have increasingly used my iPad Pro, and now only touch the Mac for the odd job, less than once a month. Stage Manager is not a big deal to me - I will use when I want to reference multiple documents for a work task, but estimate 95% of the time will continue to use full screen or split screen as now

      Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this one. This does seem to be even more of a niche feature and it’ll be interesting to see how well this will be supported by Apple, and received by the consumer.

    I use iPad and Mac differently, even though both have the same specs. I use iPad as an appliance, UA-cam, zoom, email, slack, etc. I use it mostly hand held. Mac is for work, many more concurrent apps, sitting mostly, though occasionally hand held (awkward but for a quick task, while waiting in line to board, or in cramped spaces like an airplane). Those that want a single do it all device are limiting themselves like the builder that only Carie’s a hammer.

    It seems to me they are working really hard to make a multi window UI that is different just to be different. People understand windows and how to manage them. Slight tweaks for touch is all they needed. IMO, of course.

    I want the iPad to be able to run Mac osx invitro or the opposite of extended display.
    Basically the iPad touch and screen speakers is swapped with. Any Mac osx computer.
    So the iPad is controlling the computer the computer as if the iPad IS the computer, and the actual m1 M2 laptop desktop computer is not even there.
    So a studio ultra would feel , like the iPad is the ultra, since the Mac could be anywhere , connected to SSD interfaces and what not, the iPad is the virtual interface which basically replaces your mouse keyboard desktop control with touch or work at the same time with it, since when you look at the iPad, you will see your actual osx desktop.
    Of Course you can toggle back and forth to iPad os or Mac osx like with a app touch button.
    this would work either across fast wireless networks, like distributed computing works, , or even faster by wired usbc thunderbolt or Ethernet even cross country.
    I could take my iPad cross town to the coffee shop, and pull up complete control of my Mac osx studio ultra computer thats at home, as if the iPad is that computer.
    Go over a clients house with just the iPad with a combo usbc dock with ssd HDMI cable USB storage card and pull up a video or audio project, hook it to his monitors for extended displays, mouse, and keyboard use, and work remotely on it as if the studio was right there.
    And at any time I could go back to iPad os for it's unique lower priced touch based programs.
    And much better cameras.
    Of course you could just get a well speced m1 or m2 laptop in the first place, but you loose the touch control and gestures and portability of the ipad.
    And the cameras, portability, higher ppi density screen, etc.
    Is this silly?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +1

      Not silly at all. And I think this is one of the big reasons why we also end up using two devices because I don't think Apple will (ever) put a touchscreen in the laptops. Maybe those mock ups of a detachable screen that are floating around the Internet is something that they are experimenting with, and I'm fine to be wrong, but it just doesn't seem to be in the near pipeline.

    To be fair, i really could care less about monitor support. I use my pc more for that. But i do feel like they should be able to let us use the multiple windows. I recently bought an ipad mini 6 with money i saved up. Yes it has 4 gigs of ram, but I belive apple could make it work. The ipad I have is really fast. I just want apple to provide updates to the ipad mini. Hopefullly they can at least bring it.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I think it’s hard to accept that an OS update on a newer device isn’t actually getting an update when apple has been pretty consistent with updates for devices that have been several years old.
      Even if they’ll provide security updates along with the rest of the features, it just seems as if they’re really starting to create some separation among these devices.

  • @KevinRossRN
    @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +4

    Don't get me wrong. I am all for this external display support & I welcome it. I understand that eventually hardware won't be able to keep up with the OS/Software it needs to utilize, but it seems like the hard deck that Apple is quickly creating is for the M1. However, for many of you out there with more than capable (non-M1) hardware, how do you feel about this direction? Sending you all my best. 🤘

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 2 роки тому +2

      You explained it quite well what androids fans used to claim, apple cannot give full multi tasking because of the small amount of ram giving to programs, so while snappier in use usually, it also meant apps pages were either simply paused cache cleared out or even closed.
      While big memory android with it's clunkier os felt slower, and was it was doing far more things because it had the memory to hold them and have true multitasking like a computer if that day.
      Both had pluses and minuses, but if you want full computer traits you need the memory and storage and high bandwidth ports, monitor display options in the os and a storage file system that is complete, in other words less lockdown and missing features and easier managing files.

    • @KevinRossRN

I agree on paper it seems like ram would be an issue however on iPadOS 15 I’ve never once hit a slow down in multi view or changing apps. Just hard to wrap my head around why stage manager would be so much more resource hungry than multi view and feels like a cash grab for Apple. Honestly, I’d be fine with full external support and no stage manager but instead multi view keyboard shortcuts 🤦‍♂️

    Hi Kevin, an interesting topic to talk about. The fact that APPLE is holding back what artificially each of its device could do, is itself “ungentlemanly”. APPLE is creating and causing users and buyers unnecessary confusion and/or budget issues that shouldn’t even exist.
    APPLE isn’t a “tech” company anymore, it’s behaving more and more a “consumerist” company that either trying to upsell or deliberately downgrade the cheaper models. Look at how APPLE clipped the performances of its various ports, the screen, their Apple silicon, the charging port and now even the RAM is becoming an issue. Seriously unacceptable.
    The situation isn’t going to get better as more marketing people are employed in place of engineering and technical staff.
    Sigh !!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      I’ve been really pleased with the M1 experience as far as my particular workflow needs, but I think we are now seeing how this transition is impacting the majority of users with devices that are just a couple of years old.
      The tech evolves so quickly, but the obsolescence of these fairly new (non-M1) devices is truly unfortunate.
      As of right now, I think most won’t even realize it, or care…Because of that Apple marketing 😉
      They tell a mighty good story in those marketing videos, don’t they?

      @@KevinRossRN please to share your sentiments too. Soon, as you said in your video, APPLE will shift its focus to more and more those recurring charges under SERVICES and dumb their hardware to just barely meet those SERVICES requirements. Another ADOBE in the making.
      Yup, APPLE videos are reminding me of Fashion runway shows haha LOL. Yesterday chips are so NOT “fashionable” !!
      Get everyone on board of the APPLE Silicon, then they tightly control their ecosystem, perhaps in response to various governments lawsuits and the recent Court rulings. One last historical vestige they cannot let go is those lightning ports that tied users throughly to their iPhones and legacy iPads. If APPLE can get M1 or a variant of that to work “flawlessly” on a iPhone, then there’s the end of support anything that sports a lightning port.
      Perhaps it’s good for APPLE stocks and shareholders too (wink ! wink !)

      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      I can’t wait to see how this lightning situation works out since the EU is now pressuring that transition over to USB-C.
