- Fly Fishing Colorado (Part 1): The Best Brown Trout Fishing I've Ever Experienced
Ever Since I left Colorado in the summer of 2020 I’ve been looking for an excuse to go back. So, when my brother sent me a text saying he had accepted a job out in colorado and needed help moving, I jumped at the opportunity to get out west. Little did I know that the fishing would be so incredible!
Our first day on the water started out rough. We got snowed out by a large blizzard and were forced to retreat away from the area we originally wanted to fish. But the day turned into something that was nothing short of spectacular with multiple BIG Brown trout coming from one stretch of undercut bank. Our fly of choice was a small jig streamer that was imitating a Leach that we would bounce along deep cuts of the river. We landed multiple 20 inch and bigger brown trout with no rainbow trout to be seen. Fly Fishing can be one of the most difficult ways of fishing in the wind, but having success makes it a little easier.

Enjoy every precious minute fishing with your brother, I lost mine due to f**king cancer last year and now I only have memories trouting fishing with him.
You have the best fly fishing videos on UA-cam. Great work.
I'm so sorry to hear that! My brother and I get in arguments but at the end of the day I'm not sure what I'd do with out him, he's a legend! I guess that shows not to take time together for granted. And thank you so much! Glad you enjoy the videos.
Newer to the streamer scene. I’d love to see a run down of how you guys are reading the water and how you’re retrieving. Great vid
I'll have to make a streamer rig video. Although in this video we were using a jig streamer and a euro rod so it was a bit different. Pretty much just used a euro leader down to 3x tippet
For the first time probably ever I didn’t recognize where a Colorado river was. Appreciate the discretion of the state’s rivers as they’re crazy enough as is! Great video!
No problem!! I won't mention anywhere we were fishing when we post these western videos. Some I'm sure people will recognize, but if they don't its fine. A lot of these areas don't need anymore pressure that's for sure!
@hardmanfishing We dont need the pressure thats is for sure. I think I recognize the area it looks very familiar to where I live. The mountains in the background and all that almost confirm it for me.
Thanks for initiating this program. The brown trout appears excellent in Colorado.
Kudos and appreciation.
In 40 + years of fly fishing I’ve had some really good days that I remember, some vividly. One of those days,a long day of fishing, I caught 2 browns over 20” and one about 18,all in a small creek on a dry fly I tied the night before. But this, this is the pinnacle, the zenith,of a really good day of fishing. Much respect to you guys, both of you have become excellent fly fishermen and your streamer skills are impeccable 👍🏻
Thank you so much!!
Welcome to Colorado it's been windier spring than I have seen here in years. Have fun he safe awesome videos
Wind is a fly fisherman's worst enemy! But if the trout are biting I'll be out there lol
I would have to say, you two guys ran into a once in a lifetime fishing day. For flyfisherman, that's what dreams are made of. I envy y'all, but enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing 👍. Tight lines.
Well said! Glad you enjoyed the video
Wow. What an amazing day. So well done. Another perfectly crafted video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed!!
Incredible day on the water! Well done! Looking forward to Part 2!
Way to persevere and find some amazing brown trout in some pretty tough weather conditions. Awesome video!
Thanks man!!
You got upset because he couldn’t read your mind! You guys must be close friends. Great video man!😅
Great stuff. Can’t wait for the rest of the videos from the trip
Next one I'm posting on Tuesday!!
Dang...weather of hell, but trout Heaven!! Great job!! Some impressive fly fishing!! Tight Lines!!!
Thank you!!
Good fishing and the wind is howling. Stay safe.
Wow!! Now that’s a day of ‘catching’ and not fishing!! Love those days and they are sorely needed to help with the pain of those tough days. Brings back a lot of good memories from when I lived out there. Streamering I’m the wind is tough and you guys were pros today! Congrats and great video duders!!!!!!
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed!!
Great fishing in paradise. Andrew, congrats on your new job and your new home.
I say it once and I say it again this man deserves more subscribers
100 percent! the videos are literally the best possible quality and the editing is perfect. I could see his videos on a pay to watch platform
One of your best overall videos. Mind blown guys. Speechless ☝️🤯
Thank you!!!
I assumed you guys were brothers but wasn't sure until this video. I'm sure I missed it in a different video but way you guys interact at times confirmed it. I have 2 brothers and we're over 35 but still on occasion fuss with each other like we're 6 years old again. Lol you guys definitely have that and I love it. If I'm wrong your lucky to be such close friends.
Yep we are brothers! And we definitely still fuss with each other like we have since we in elementary school. I doubt we are going to ever stop!! Thanks for watching
As much as we all hate the wind, fishing gets good when the fish feel safe to eat, and the wind ripples the surface, helping the fish fell safe from predation above. They are harder to see in the rippled water, and you are also harder to see so it always comes together on those windy days. good video as always, and streamers rule!
Exactly!! Thanks for watching!!
Great shots! I love the filming on this video. Super cinematic while it still feels like some dudes just throwing a video together nonchalantly
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed!
Hey welcome to Colorado Andrew! So in my experience out here (been here my whole life) often the days with rough weather conditions can be the best for brown trout. You run into less fisherman for one, but it also seems to get them fired up! Great video looking forward to the rest of the series.
That's what I've heard from a lot of people!! We were just fishing because we didn't have any other time to fish. But that's awesome
Smashing that like. Look forward to another installment of the CO series. Also, really looking forward to sharing another Western MD stream with you. Tight lines man!
Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hahaha the windy fly cast😂😂 awesome
Wow, what a great day you had! But, yep, that wind is sure springtime in Colorado (I lived there for a couple years). Looking forward to the next installment! Thanks for sharing this great video with us!
Glad you enjoyed!!
It’s been a while since I’ve laughed at a fly fishing video
That's what we're here for
That was amazing, those browns are tanks !
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed!
I'm glad to see you boys enjoying some more Colorado fishing! I highly recommend trying some Colorado ice fishing (February and March) at Granby Reservoir and Grand Lake. It's challenging and if you play it right, you can catch Lake Trout that are 30"+ . Huge Lake Trout (35-40"+) possible across Colorado, state record for Lake Trout comes from Blue Mesa Reservoir: 50lbs 5oz @ 44.25"
That sounds awesome! Although we've never ice fished so that would be something completely new
Grew up and still fish all that area! Can’t get enough! Less crowds and bigger fish than the canyons and reservoirs down stream. Viva la Fairtsel!
Hit 4 mile creek in the spring when it’s flooded. You’ll piss yourself at the fish in there!
I'll have to remember that!! Thanks for watching
Yes sir, welcome to Colorado. That area is notorious for the w word and big lake run/resident browns and some huge cutbows as well as cutty. The cutbanks are endless on the splatte
I know I love it.. I'm sure Andrew will be exploring more of it. I'm tempted to make a trip back in the fall when those lake run browns try and push up. Thanks for watching!
Hey look who’s back!
Back again, Shady's back, tell a friend!
@@hardmanfishing 😂 lol nice fishin guys!
Andrews redemption story was completed with the lay down nab of the last fish. Epic.
John, I watch a lot of your videos and love them. A suggestion. Don’t grab your fly rod above the grip. They are not made to be gripped anywhere but the handle, the flyrod could break if grabbed above the grip.
Well done fellas, It was nice to meet you guys. Andrew, welcome to Colorado. We’ll have to get out and fish sometime. Hit me up if you have any questions, I’m always happy to help.
Nice meeting you to man. We'll for sure have to get out and fish!!
Welcome to CO Andrew! I’ll be sure to say hi if we cross paths on the river!
Definitely an Alex peric move right there
Hey Jon, I don't know if you remember me telling you that on the coldest day of winter and those windy, cold, harsh environment days I've always caught my largest fish and you will too. It's like the crazier the barometric pressure is and the sudden weather changes the better the fish get pumped up and they bite especially the biggest ones. Love your videos. I was stationed at Fort Lowry in Denver, CO. Keep netting those big browns and always tight lines. Tony
Glad you enjoyed Tony! But yeah, I remember that. Colorado's "bad weather" is a bit more extreme then our "bad weather" out east. Lots of wind (which I can't stand) and snow. If we can catch fish like that though it is for sure worth it
I am a pretty new fly fisherman and today I was out and caught my first brown trout on a dry fly and this trout was 17 inches. Also I caught a golden rainbow on my fly rod.
That is awesome!! Congrats!!
Totally redeemed himself with that quick thinking nose dive netting on that last one!
incredible production
Thank you! I spent wayyyy too much time editing this video
@@hardmanfishing I can tell, the intro alone is above movie quality
Awesome video! 🤠
hey dude im not sure exactly where ur at but i live in sw colorado and if u want some of the best trout fishing in your whole life, go to north fork of the gunnison river, soap creek where it meets blue mesa reservoir, and also the east river. if u were here later u could hike into the black canyon, but we still got a bunch of snow in there.
congrats on the fishing
I recently moved here to Colorado as well. Great fishing, outdoor activities, and gorgeous country!!! Nice vid! I’d love to know the river but I wouldn’t mention it either, so I applaud your discretion. Question tho, why don’t rack of you have a net? Lol
Andrew I know that feeling when your buddy loses a big fish and you’re the net man, I always expect to catch looooots of flak, at least until he catches one and then all is forgiven 😂 Awesome video guys!! Love Colorado!
HAHA!! Yeah my attitude changed quickly when I landed the next one. I feel like it's such a stupid argument to get into but almost everybody has at one point or another. Thank you so much for watching!
Nice job dudes . I know exactly this spot .. under the radar place most people have no idea the size of fish that lurk under those banks. I had a similar day here one Easter Sunday .
What month was this just out of curiosity?
What you doing in my waters? Haha just kidding but I know exactly where you are fishing. Welcome to Colorado Andrew! Your Brother is going to want to move here in no time. Hit me up if you want to fish sometime!
awesome video!!! great to see you with your brother, enjoy guys! it looks like if you guys found the holly grail of the brown trout spot.
Thank you!! And its a hell of a spot that's for sure
Ya those runs are dope. Should hit south gill trail behind the dam it's C&R
Hi.
I'm watching your tapes. I am wondering about the rather unusual question of where to buy such a colorful and fantastic backpack that you are carrying. Regards.
What river were you fishing ?great Browns
Love it
Awesome video. I'll be following along and taking notes because I'm just starting to film my trips. What camera do you use other than your GoPro?
Welcome to Colorado
What river? Where were you?
Those skinny spawned out fish will be a lot nicer layer in the tlyear once they've put on some weight. Just saying...
Well done for sticking out the tough conditions.
Oh yeah they will for sure!! Thank you for watching
DAAAAAAAANG!! Them boys be GORGEOUS!🤯👍 Gotta love fishing the Colorados...whether it's the streams, lakes, er literally wherever. Nicely done guys.🙂👍 Good to see Andrew back in on the action too. Have to ask, were you down in the flat lands of Colorado? It didn't seem like you up in elevation like the mountains. 🤔 I know the winds can get blastin thru those flats. Well done on makin this and persevering to do so. Keep em comin. Peace ✌😎
We were in the mountains, just kind of in a bowl of sorts, so it was pretty flat in our little area. And thank you!! Glad you enjoyed!!
Someone needs a Snickers. Noticed second one was put on the reel faster :)
Fire
You don't have to reveal your exact location, but can you please ID the river? That would help me relive all my wonderful adventures fly fishing in Colorado.
More than likely South Platte.
Caught the fattest 22” inches ever out of there in the fall. The wind was ripping too. Love your work, keep it up
I love that area, so many nice fish! That wind is annoying though that is for sure
When did you get the T&T? I haven’t noticed it in the other vids. But I don’t watch them all. Congrats on your day.
Probably 4 months ago. But it's Andrews rod so you don't see it if I'm the one fishing
Where about in CO is this?
That’s April and October fishing for you anywhere where brown trout are
I like how you get mad at him
It's what brothers do LOL
Where was this at in Colorado?
Brothers.
I recently bought that net. Great net for the price
"Big fish move in bad weather" Del Canty
That's the truth!!
Some of my best fishing experiences have been in high wind weather.
Honestly I hate high wind more than anything. I'd rather freeze to death of fish in a flood I think LOL
Rod and line details? Looks like a mono rig and jig streamer?
You're correct! the rod is a 10 foot 3 wt from Thomas and Thomas
We're gonna need a bigger net👍
What rod where you using ? A T and T contact??? You were euro jigging streamers ????
Yep!! Pretty effective
@@hardmanfishing any favorite flies for this ???
Jon, why don't you continue doing your WV and east coast thing and have Andrew make vids in CO? Together, Hadman Fishing Adventures can have CO and WV Divisions producing more content that's also geographically diversified. Great trip for you guys. Congrats.
That's the plan actually!! It'll take some time to get Andrew up to speed but expect some much more diverse videos coming out this summer
@@hardmanfishing - Great minds think alike! 😉
The intro tho
Those fish all looked really malnourished. No wonder they were hungry!
That's what I'm saying!! They were eating because they were all starving to death! Too many big fish in the one hole and they were probably competing for any amount of food that came by
That’s going to be hard to top
👍
"huge brown, huge brown, fuck" should be a sticker
Dream stream?
Where in CO is the new job?
Denver!
@@hardmanfishing next time you guys need to explore the western slope. Great water out here. Stoked for the rest of the series
Swing over to Utah while you’re around!
I need to visit Utah for sure!!
Talk to me like that one more time little bro 👊
River located in Colorado
They probably gathering up to spawn
Bro good video but I don't think even you would of landed the trout lol
🤠😎👍
I think it was the luck of Andrew’s rod that did it!! Lighten up on ur net man and get him the correct net.. lol keep hammering out there!!
I agree I should've been nicer. I think its tough to show that we were on like hour 4 of fishing without a fish landed running on almost no sleep. So when you lose a big fish your initial reaction is not rainbows and butterflies. I could've cut it out but I felt like it was a real moment and helped show that not everything is perfect! Thanks for watching
@@hardmanfishing I get it bro.. It was great that there were more and it wasn’t the only fish of the day that would be my luck.
Ikan apa kawanku ....
Do you know how to play a fish 🎣.
Honey hole definition.
Are you guys twins?
It’s your fish you caught it stop your crying and get your own fish out of the water. You don’t even have a measuring tape.
Haha he gets mad at net man, maybe your fault buddy, chill out anyway, ITS JUST FISHING
Exactly it's just fishing and that argument wasn't that serious LOL We're brothers we argue constantly. I left that in the video because I thought it showed that not everything is rainbows and butterflies while we're out fishing. But some of y'all are getting offended
Brothers disagree I know. For sure I know. When you said, immediately. As your brother I would have said, immediately? I told mike my brother, hey I meant, now!!!! He said, guess what? Do it yourself. I’m not yours to boss. I said, ok ….jerk. You want to get something to eat? He said, heck yes I am hungry. It don’t last long. Lol
LOL yeah brotherly arguments last about 10 seconds then you move on! I feel like you're not even brothers if you don't get into a spat every now and again
Net the fish yourself bud.
Lol you got upset
those fish aren't 20.............. 17-18 max. Average fish in that stretch not "big"
They were literally measured with a tape measure LOL
does anyone in Colorado actually cook and eat the fish they catch?
I do all the time. I carry a little portable stove/pan with me. However, some place, especially the gold medal water areas, are catch and release only.
Loose the drama.
